0003 Katakana Shrine 片仮名神社:
Katakana Shrine is dear to my heart- it is the place I traditionally visit for Hatsumode, my first Shrine visit of the year. Even before that, I would visit the shops high above, full of fun stuff. And for the past few years, I've also been invited to join in the New Year festival- Katakana Shrine has free items and lucky boards to one side to celebrate the New Year, as well as spontaneous parties (hamsters are common attendees!), and for the past few years I have contributed a few little items to their offerings. Make sure to pick up the Hamaya of the year, with the ema prayer board and dragon figure; you can also get the Hamaya for last year with a rabbit theme. Katakana Shrine also has special edition Goshuin books, with 6 special covers that cannot be found anywhere else.

0063 Sea Butterfly Shrine 海蝶神社:
And now we have reached the last Shrine on our goshuin pilgrimage this year! Located above Club Sea Butterfly, Sea Butterfly Shrine has a waterfall and zen garden which the titulary butterflies flutter around. An animated omikuji machine has been added by the Shrine office- take the time to watch the tiny shrine maiden fetch a fortune from inside the miniature shrine, and drop it into the receptacle for you. These really exist in real life too, and they are pretty great! They do not have one here, but if you have wondered about the standing displays with all the little tied sheets of paper you have seen around (there is one at the previous stop, 0062 Megami Jinja, next to the less animated omikuji booth)- that's what you do with a bad fortune, because some of them are! You tie up the bad fortunes and leave them behind at the Shrine, so the deity can try to protect you from it.

Megami Jinja is a goddess Shrine, right off the beach. While there is a chozuya for hand washing (you probably noticed these water basins everywhere- ritual cleanliness is a big deal in Shinto, and washing your hands and mouth before worship is considered polite), there is no Shrine office here- the goshuin is sitting next to the donation box for upkeep of the Shrine.

0061 Azuki shrine 小豆神社:
In a sea of red spider lilies, Azuki Shrine serves as the garden entrance for NAMINOKE and rudi-ludi-fool, and their joint kimono project HONENOKE. The goldfish who floats in front is the teleporter to take you to various levels of their stores. Being flung around on the teleporter is fun, I suggest you take a ride! Azuki Shrine is on one half of a yin-yang island, which a river of torii gates in the middle- upon which a yokai procession is walking, you can just see a little of that poking up above my book, I didn't want them to notice me taking their picture. The child on the dragon next to the goshuin table can be taken home with you, as can a script in a box on the table that will auto cycle through your goshuin for you.

0060 kingyo jingu 金魚神宮:
kingyo jingu is an ethereal place, and celebrating its 10th year. Giant goldfish inside the Shrine give it its name. There are also fish swimming in the tank/counter of the cafe and in suspended fishbowls (the cat does not seem particularly interested in them), where you can stop for a snack. You can pick up a lovely Hamaya for the Year of the Dragon, and you can also take fuda home with you- the strips of paper with writing you may have seen at other Shrine offices, which you can display at home for protection and luck from the deity of this place. "Jingu" instead of "jinja" can mean this is a larger Shrine, or a imperial Shrine (however the exact rules on the difference varied over the centuries)- in the case of 0037 Salmaru Grand Shrine with the additional prefix of "big" it was translated as "Grand Shrine", and this is also the same "gu" as in Hachimangu for Hachiman Shrines. I have (mostly!) tried to avoid the pedantry of getting into the translations, but sometimes the proper Japanese name can give you more insight into the character of a place.

0059 Kiyomizu Temple 清水寺:
And back to Nepessing to Kiyomizu Temple! Like Shrines in the Kyoto region, this is also based on a real life Temple in Kyoto, Japan. It's a good recreation- with my avatar standing there, my feet are cold (the last time I visited was in the winter, and shoes are removed to walk inside buildings in Japan. The floors may be just as cold as outside as there are often not enclosed walls!) This is a more common style of center stamp for Temples than the more detailed photograph style of the other Temple we have visited, 0008 Eifuku Temple, but you can see where the two goshuin are portraying a similar center image while this one is simpler and a little more abstract, and again the name of the Temple is a little smaller and to the left side unlike Shrine goshuin. I have taken the teleport to the other side of the river for the view- like the real world Temple, it's far too large, without an easy place to stand further away, to get it all in a photo while at it, but there are teleporters around to a photography point with this in mind. You can see the torii gates of 0056 Nekoma Shrine just beside it- I told you it was close.

Usagi Shrine is another Shrine that's been on my list of places to visit around the New Year for a few years, but this year they have goshuin! Admire the floating lanterns from the bridge on your way in, and take a moment to relax and enjoy the rabbits that frolic around this Shrine, they are quite brave with humans- and surprisingly do not hop through the zen garden and disturb the raked "rivers," which you may wish to sit and contemplate with a cup of tea.

0057 LIONTEMPLE 雷音神社:
A small floating garden island in the sky, LION TEMPLE enshrines Karashishi, a Chinese lion-dog. In this case, I would say a little more lion than dog (and with none of the horn- the horn is left out a lot though)- you can see the very benevolent and cute aspect behind the curtains of the Shrine. While the name provided of the place is "Temple" in English, the name of the place in Japanese is instead "Shrine"- but see previous about the not really hard lines between the two. This is another place related to music- in this case Second Lion Sound, so you may wish to turn your stream on and listen in if you don't usually leave it on.

At Nekoma Shrine, you can watch a ceremonial dance performance on the stage, the shrine maidens are tireless and always dancing. There are a number of Hamaya here to choose from, as well as a number of other lucky things you can pick up at this Shrine. Look off to the left from where I am standing in this picture to see a giant Buddha statue that watches over this hillside town. Walk up the stone steps past the dragon to worship (this is one of those times when you do want to peek inside! That is Tama), when you come down, keep walking down the steps behind me to get to 0059 Kiyomisu Temple, it is right next to this Shrine.

0055 OuseJinja 逢瀬神社:
I mentioned Ouse Jinja when I talked about 0036 Apo Hachimangu- they share a region, though not an altitude- Ouse Jinja is a subordinate Shrine to Apo Hachimangu. (fun fact: they also both share a creator with the rabbit Shrine of 0052 Togetsu Jinja.) This Shrine enshrines Ubusunagami, the god of this particular place (Ubusunagami are the patron gods of your birthplace, though they will continue to protect you even if you leave). Nunakawahime-no-Mikoto, a goddess of matchmaking, marriage, and fulfillment of wishes, is worshipped here. Peacocks wander the gardens of this Shrine complex.

0054 Kusanagi Shrine 草彅神社:
Kusanagi Shrine is actually just a region away from 0003 Katakana Shrine. The information board here is also in English, so it is easy to discover that the deities enshrined here are Philip Rosedale/Linden, Purimusubi (the master of prim), and Tekusuchiyahime (the goddess of texture); and there is a holy default box created by Philip Linden inside the honden. In celebration of the holy prim, the Shrine is built almost entirely out of default prims, as opposed to mesh.

0053 Neko Jinja 猫神社:
Neko Jinja is a cat Shrine! With a region name like "MusicLab" you might guess that this is sponsored by a DJ, and if you turn on the stream, you might find the music rather pleasant. This is a permanent Shrine, and sometimes there are cat gatherings and even the appearance of a cat god. Come to this Shrine for matchmaking, protection from evil, and exorcism (especially if it's a mouse demon).

0052 TogetsuJinja 兎月神社:
I mentioned Togetsu Jinja towards the beginning of our journey- it shares a landmass with 0005 Bazumitama-sha, being a region to the north so you can walk between then fairly easily. If you do walk betwee them, you will probably notice a lot of Shrines along the way, especially small ones, that are not participating in the Goshuin Project, but are still worth seeing. Little Shrines tucked around all over is pretty common, kept clean and maintained by people in the area, without the whole complex and staff of the larger Shrines. But once you get to our destination Togetsu Jinja, we have a Shrine to rabbits! The moon features prominently here- while you may see the face of a man in the moon, it is more traditionally a rabbit in the moon in Japan, more specifically a rabbit pounding mochi. This Shrine is right next to an entertainment district- if you know what I mean.
