CH.9 The Portal to Hell
 https://5kyeeidtal.bandcamp.com/album/eisenlager-idtal-i-2-2020-1123-33-eisen-beton-kopf-remix-by-eisenlager
Ok, so I seem to have stumbled upon a mysterious portal to the nether…am I going to possibly risk being completely vaporized by it and never seen again or escape that sociopathic bat for good and come back when I can get the ship started? The choice really wasn’t that hard. The portal took her to a planet called Terra or earth as some call it. However, in this reality earth had been taken over by zombies in the year 2021 and few survivors remained. This is the story of those survivors…
The Living Dead approached Aranea swiftly but they were no match for her powerful Stone Fist. Come get some bitch she said, taunting them. From the distance, a lone sniper fired. The <Electro-Dragon> did a rolling scream…. “I am gonna fuck up your entire universe and everything in it!” The Sniper missed again. You could hear something fall from the nearby redwood tree in which it was stationed. They were close to the assassin now but zombies blocked her from its deadly projectiles. They were still completely naked with full-body tattoos of her tribe and their sacred star sign of the apprentice. Her large tits and huge constantly erect nipples were exposed only wearing the ship's key, but armor would soon become a priority after this debacle. The sniper looked like a definite reptilian of some species. He was green like Aranea but with Red markings and a much smaller stubbier tail...figures. He pulled out Golden twin Uzis on Aranea, firing them till the 32-round 9mm clips were emptied into them. They dodged flying out of the way with their dragon wings and then used the palms of their hands to shoot the hands off the assailant. They then used their third eye chakra to harness the power of pure energy in the atmosphere to vaporize the remains of the passed-out and hand-less lizard. This is how she got the Twin Uzis which were gold and matched her overly excited purple and gold nipples.
She was all alone now, just drifting through the eerie, wasteland which was clearly haunted and had screeching ghosts flying all around it. It was truly hell on earth. They spent almost a whole year smashing zombie skulls with her stone cestus, trying to heal the soul of this infected planet. Eventually, though they just gave up. During this time they encountered other bipedal animals. There Was Loretta the Red Panda, who introduced Aranea to the others. A group of survivors living in the RedWoods in an old 1981 Vanagon. Around it was all their motorcycle which they held as dear as life itself.
The day they met they played a fun game called Farkle and vaporized Dragons-Tongue flowers with a special pipe made of "Qoiten Glass". She trained with the group for days doing pull-ups on the redwoods branches. There was also Navi and a young Furry Where-wolf who loved to howl at the moon as do all lycanthropes. The group was called 'The Skull-Crushers' In addition to Navi there was also Kassandra a Bipedal Naga as there called on Rayuba, or in the common tongue cobra. They also regularly had raves in the forest with lights made from glowing rocks found in nearby mines.
I had to wonder what potential these light-emitting stones emitted."Could they possibly be used to increase the power of my Cestus?" Repair the metal armor back on my ship perhaps? They put of few of them in their pocket for safe keeping.
After sufficiently meditating on the idea of entering & Breeding each other's bodies the time had come for them to have an erotic Orgy to put it simply. They all sat in a square and began scissoring, moaning, and squirting on each other. After this happened, they all decided it was time to eat each other out in a big square circle, this lasted for about an hour until no one could breathe and they had to take a break. After some gentle cuddling Aranea used their penis to Impregnate Lorreta, Navi, and Cassandra. Simultaniously in one night.

Dr. Mrs. The Monarch is voiced by Doc Hammer, though she was voiced by Jackson Publick in her first appearance, "The Terrible Secret of Turtle Bay", albeit as a cameo.
Background
As a young woman, Sheila attended State University and was a student of Professor Fantomas. She has a doctorate in an unnamed field, and appears proficient in mechanics and general sciences, as evidenced by her having built the Monarch's first pair of functional wings, his ill-conceived "sunshine gun", and several tracking devices used for her own purposes.
Sheila later became the super-villain known as Lady Au Pair before serving as the second-in-command to many different super-villains over the years under several names. She soon went on to work for Phantom Limb under the name Queen Etherea, at which point she first met the Monarch. After falling in love with the Monarch, she abandoned working for Phantom Limb and went on to serve as the Monarch's second-in-command, Dr. Girlfriend.
Dr. Mrs. The Monarch with her husband, the MonarchAt the start of the series, Dr. Girlfriend’s relationship with the Monarch had begun to suffer due to his vendetta against the Venture family. In hopes of trying to bridge the gap between the two sides, she convinces the Monarch to reach out to Hank and Dean Venture as a friend when Monarch confides that Dr. Venture emotionally neglects his children. Despite her efforts, the Monarch continues his vendetta against the Ventures throughout the first season, until their breakup in "The Trial of the Monarch".
In season 2, Doctor Girlfriend had gone back to working with her former lover Phantom Limb, going by Queen Etherea again. However, Phantom Limb's pompousness grated on her and she reunited with The Monarch, whom she married in "Showdown At Cremation Creek".
In the Season 3, she and her husband move into Phantom Limb's former home in the local villain community of Malice.
In the Season 4, Dr. Mrs. The Monarch continues to aid her husband. During this time she forms a friendship with Henchman 21 which leads to a kiss between them in "Assisted Suicide". It turns out in "Operation P.R.O.M." that the kiss meant nothing to her, which was a contributing factor to 21 officially breaking away from them.
In the season 5 finale, she, her husband and their sole henchman 21 (who returned to their ranks) move into the Monarch's old family home in New Jersey because Sergeant Hatred accidentally destroyed the Cocoon and their house in Malice. She is later offered a position as a member of The Council of 13, which she accepts. In "All This and Gargantua-2", The Sovereign arranges the deaths of most of the council when they refuse to participate in his plans to attack the space station Gargantua 2. She is one of the few survivors of this attack, and confronts the Sovereign in his home and asks him not to destroy Gargantua-2 because her husband is there. The Sovereign begins a self-destruct sequence at his lair, where Dr. Mrs. The Monarch is restrained and unable to free herself, but Watch and Ward arrive in time to launch the built-in escape pod (always installed right after a self-destruction button), and they escape to Meteor Majeure (saving The Monarch and 21 on the way) where Dr. Henry Killinger announces his plans to create a new council.
During Season 6, Dr. Mrs. The Monarch becomes a part of the new The Council of 13, which plans to reshape The Guild of Calamitous Intent which had suffered as a result of the previous leader's actions. During this time, she meets the villain Wide Wale, to whom she offers a position on the council and who demands that The Guild give all arching rights to Dr. Thaddeus "Rusty" Venture to him. Later on, she and the council are forced to deal with a vigilante who takes on the identity of the famous superhero (who may have been a bad guy) The Blue Morpho, who was, unbeknownst to her, her father-in-law). She and The Council later (incorrectly) believe that the new Blue Morpho is secretly Dr. Venture when in fact he is really The Monarch.
Later on, when a villain named The Wandering Spider arching Venture goes missing she and the other council members spot Dr. Venture dressed up like the Blue Morpho, which confirms their suspicions. At Wide Wale's urging, she is given a sniper rifle to shoot Venture to avenge their fallen comrades. At first, she hesitates, but finally takes the shot. However, because the Blue Morpho's jacket has a bulletproof lining, Venture survives. Dr. Mrs. The Monarch checks her phone and finds two messages: one from Wandering Spider telling her that The Blue Morpho is holding him hostage and the other from her husband torturing his new arch, Dr. Heinie, both of which occurred while they were observing (and shooting) Dr. Venture. When it seems clear that Venture was not The Blue Morpho, she reprimands the Council for pushing her to perform a pointless act of violence.
Dr. Mrs. The Monarch and her colleagues then form a truce with the OSI, and set up a trap for The Blue Morpho in which some of the OSI and villains disguise themselves as the Ventures to fight against Dr. Venture's current nemesis Red Death. When The Blue Morpho doesn't show up, Dr. Mrs. The Monarch leaves. Furious that the vigilante didn't appear, she resolves to track down and kill the man herself.
Her vow to track down and slay the Blue Morpho ultimately comes to naught, for Henchman 21 eventually divulges to her that the Monarch is the true killer and was being held by Wide Wale before asking for her help. She enlists Red Death's help (in return for a promise of a Guild Council seat without killing her husband) to break into Dummy Corp and find the location of Douglas Ong, aka Dr, Dugong, Wide Wale's brother. Dr. Dugong, was hiding under OSI protection because his brother Wide Wale was a supervillain. Dugong is reunited with Wale, who believed his brother dead at the Monarch's hands, and the Monarch escapes murder. Furthermore, the original Blue Morpho, Vendata, resurfaces and is slain in an entirely unrelated incident. Following his death, the original Blue Morpho is blamed for all the Guild villain murders, and the Monarch is freed of any suspicion. Dr. Mrs. The Monarch learns that the original Blue Morpho's was the Monarch's father.
In "The Inamorata Consequence", Dr. Mrs. The Monarch and some other Guild representatives meet with the OSI at the Treaty of Tolerance Summit II to renew the agreement on organized aggression. During the negotiations, Dr. Mrs. The Monarch maintains a somewhat more civil disposition than most of the Guild or OSI emissaries there, but when negotiations break down into squabbling she too is sucked in. It is Dr. Venture of all people who shames both sides into coming back to the table and signing the new treaty. After the summit ends, Dr. Mrs. The Monarch learns of Guild Stranger S-464's secret tryst with Agent Kimberly McManus. Dr. Mrs. The Monarch correctly recognizes Fictel's comment of S-464 having "peepee" on his belt as in not urine but "P.P.", as in the marks of the Peril Partnership. S-464 was now uncovered as a mole.
In The Bellicose Proxy, Dr. Mrs. The Monarch, with Watch and Ward's assistance, interrogates S-464 and gains his assistance as a double agent in return for helping him regain the love of McManus. Dr. Mrs. The Monarch engineers their meeting by secretly providing a level 6 ray gun to a level 1 arching, which would engender both the Guild and the OSI to intercede. When S-464 and Dr. Mrs. The Monarch encounter McManus, the latter shows only disdain and contempt for them. She expresses that she hates S-464 for his association with the Peril Partnership, calling them scum. When Dr. Mrs. The Monarch attempts to intercede, McManus's disrespect causes Dr. Mrs. The Monarch to fly off the handle even in the face of a peaceful resolution. the Monarch and Henchman 21, who had been mentoring Augustus St. Cloud during the arching encounter, intercede and break up the fight. They apologize to both McManus and S-464 before leaving them to settle their differences. Dr. Mrs. The Monarch thanks her husband for saving her life, but the Monarch says he only saved her career as she would have taken down McManus.
In "The Terminus Mandate", the conflict with the Peril Partnership seems to be coming to a head, but Dr. Mrs. The Monarch and Red Death meet with Blind Rage to discuss a peace agreement. Blind Rage loutishly demands that kickbacks formerly paid by Wide Wale be resumed, but Dr. Mrs. The Monarch only promises she will speak about it with the Guild. The Guild Council votes and ultimately agrees (though Red Death would secretly later scuttle the agreement by attacking Blind Rage and tying him to railroad tracks. After the vote to pay off the Partnership is concluded, the task of what to do about the Council's inability to fully restore itself is brought up. Dr. Mrs. The Monarch cites the Guild Charter which allows the Council to be reformed as the Guild's governing body. However, this development would require the Council members to retire from active supervillainy and become full-time Council members. Dr. Mrs. The Monarch breaks the news to the Monarch, and he reacts tempestuously before leaving for the Monarch Cave in a huff. Henchman 21 attempts to console her by saying that the Monarch isn't the type to do anything rash, but the effort is largely unhelpful.
Before their retirement, each Councilperson is given a final arching assignment to their worst foe, and Dr. Mrs. The Monarch is set up with her old nemesis Novia. For this encounter with her rival, Dr. Mrs. The Monarch assumes her old guise of Lady Au Pair and enlists the help of 21, whom dons a Moppet costume. Despite Sheila's hesitation upon sight of Novia, 21 approaches Novia, and the encounter commences. However, it is a heartfelt and emotional one as Novia and Lady Au Pair embrace. On the way home from the encounter, Dr. Mrs. The Monarch expresses doubts to 21 about the future of her partnership with the Monarch. At 21's behest, she cuts off his ponytail as a symbol of the change he's undergone in the past year. In addition, Dr. Mrs. The Monarch presents 21 with Novia's wallet, commenting that their encounter was an arching.
When the Guild Council reconvenes, most of the present members (Wide Wale a notable exception) accept supervillainy retirement to retain their seats. But when the question is posed to Dr. Mrs. The Monarch, she hesitates. "The Terminus Mandate" ends before she gives an answer.
Later episodes seem to confirm her decision to retain her Council seat at the cost of her supervillain career. In "the Forecast Manufacturer", she is seen in Guild uniform with Dr. Z giving the Monarch and Henchman 21 orders to infiltrate the headquarters of the Creep and ultimately assassinate him. In "The Saphrax Protocol", Dr. Mrs. The Monarch participates as one of the Guild Council in the Monarch's Tenning ceremony. The Monarch at one point comments the Guild has taken away the ability to work with his wife in villainy, although they seem to still be close, judging by how Dr. Mrs. The Monarch comments how proud she is of him, calling him "sweetie".

The Fall Part One
A/N: Hello lovies! This is going to be a pretty long ride so buckle up! The story will follow a reader who is similar to Tony Stark in intelligence and creations. It’ll be one story until we reach a certain point, then you can choose which route you want to take. (The options are Gabriel Reyes, Jack Morrison, and Jesse McCree.) Until that point, there will be heavy hints and developments with all three.
You couldn’t quite remember the last time you’d been so terrified.
The world around you was an uncontrollable chaos of fire and weapons. Talon hit your university, and they hit hard.
You, along with several other students and your favorite professor, were locked in the main engineering room. They’d been ‘interrogating’ the professor (if it could even be called that). They were torturing him, and threatening him with the lives of his students.
He was a good man, and you held firmly onto the small device he’d slipped into your gloved hands when he was forced to the front of the room. He didn’t name the sleek device that was pressed tightly against the light armor, but if you had to wager a guess you’d say it was related to Overwatch. He’d worked closely with them in the past few years, and had openly suggested that you should think about joining them in the future.
You knew that Overwatch had sent a strike team already. One of the Talon guards had dropped to the floor before the attack became more organized, a clear sign that a sniper had been waiting outside.
Since then, they fortified this location and had been rummaging through schematics for hours. You couldn’t be sure what they were looking for, but you had one hell of a feeling it wasn’t good.
There was a small buzz from the device in your hands, almost imperceptible, and if you hadn’t been as focused on it as you were, you probably would’ve missed it.
It was a call for help, you were sure. Your father had been a special operative with the US military and had been sure to educate you on the art of war, among other things. You knew Overwatch couldn’t directly attack, not while there were still so many hostages.
They needed help.
You stared down at the shiny silver gloves. Your fingers weren’t covered, and it only went down to the start of your forearm, but you knew it was your only chance.
You’d been working on perfecting a suit of armor that could double as a weapon. The designs were getting better, and you’d made massive headway with it. The titanium alloy fit against your skin like it was cloth, rather than the clunky original version. A silvery design circled your palm, where the energy could manifest into repulsor beams strong enough to cause serious damage- or fly, but you’d need the full suit for that.
The Talon agents were pulling apart the room, digging through schematics these students had spent years on. What they were looking for in particular, you weren’t entirely sure, but you knew they wouldn’t leave until they found it.
Your eyes met the hard stare of your professor. Despite the bruises and blood displayed on his face, he kept his shoulders high and a frown steady. He wasn’t a trained operative, and mostly worked with the engineers, but he didn’t let that show. He was being brave, and you knew it was for the sake of you and the other students.
It took too much time for you to set a solid plan into place apparently, as one of the agents pulled a very familiar red binder from your workspace. Your heart stopped, and it felt as if the earth itself opened up beneath you. That binder held the very plans you’d been working on since you were a kid. It started as a stupid idea, but the older you got the more realistic it became. You were on the cusp of a major scientific breakthrough, and they were about to steal it.
The crushing realization was momentarily put on the backburner as your opening presented itself. The agent who found your binder informed the others. They were congregating far enough away from the other students where you could safely strike.
One breath.
That’s all it took.
Then you raised your hand, the energy of the gloves pulsing before you as a blue laser shot forward, hitting the nearest agent in the shoulder.
You kept one hand trained on them, yelling at your peers to get the hell out of there as you continued your assault. At first, while the students were rushing by in a chaotic flood of bodies, you held your ground. When you noticed they were gone, you became more deliberate in your strikes.
You used the landscape around you, as your father had taught you. If an agent got too close, you would resort to hand to hand combat.
Minutes dragged by, though to you it felt like hours.
The gloves were overheating, a flaw you recognized and were currently attempting to fix. Still, you kept your eyes on the red binder as it was being rushed from the room.
A spark told you that your gloves were depleted, and you resorted to hand to hand combat entirely. You weren’t bad at it, but there were far too many agents swarming the building. You were backed into a corner, and you knew your defenses wouldn’t be enough.
Briefly, you thought of what your death would mean.
Then, it wouldn’t mean much. Your research would probably be continued by another student, your name forgotten in a list of those who lost their lives to the sudden Talon attack.
The agent nearest to you fell.
Then the next.
And the next.
Before you knew it, the room was silent. Even among the incapacitated agents, you knew your binder wasn’t there. It’d been stolen in the chaos, and a fury you didn’t realize you were capable of was brewing.
The storm in your eyes was tempered by a gentle call of your name.
You heaved a sigh of relief at the woman who stood before you. She looked exhausted, like she’d been waiting impatiently through the entire ordeal- which you were sure was the truth. Her blue uniform was pretty much a dead giveaway that she belonged to Overwatch, but you didn’t really recognize her.
To be fair, you didn’t really know anyone from Overwatch besides your professor. (And you definitely recognized the Strike Commander’s face, but that’s about it.)
“I’m Captain Amari,” she introduced herself, speaking softly.
She had a motherly touch, as she guided you out of the building, and despite the large sniper rifle slung on her back, you found yourself comforted by her presence.
“Dr. Rossi told me you fought them off by yourself,” she explained, leading you towards a makeshift medical tent.
The doctors and nurses milling about looked frazzled. While you knew that Talon had inflicted damage on your university, you didn’t realize the full extent until you saw the dozens of casualties crowding the tent.
“That was stupid,” she chastised you, and you had half a mind to hold your head in shame. “But brave.”
The smile on her lips told you of an appreciation she didn’t dare utter for fear you’d do it again.
“Is Dr. Rossi okay?” You inquired, clenching your fists.
You needed to stop slacking on your research. If Captain Amari hadn’t been there, you would’ve been toast, and all because you didn’t solve a problem you’d known about for weeks.
“He’s okay,” she assured you, firmly- yet still gently- forcing you into a chair. “He sent me in to find you. If I understand correctly, Talon was after your research.”
You grimaced. There was no way they could decode your life’s work, at least not yet, but the thought of them having access to it made you uneasy.
“They got away with it,” you confirmed, leaning back into the chair and letting your gaze fall on your hands.
The gloves protected your hands from the punches you’d thrown, but the rest of you was pretty bruised up. They’d gotten a few good hits in.
She shifted, like she was thinking of how she wanted to approach the subject, before deciding it was best to just to be direct.
“What was in the research they stole?”
She waited patiently, noting your hesitation. It was clear you didn’t particularly want to talk about it, and you were still sorting through your own anger on the situation.
“It’s coded,” you said, evading the question. She noticed but didn’t ask. “If we can get it back in time, they won’t know what any of it says.”
A quirked eyebrow.
“We?”
You crossed your arms over your chest, realizing your mistake.
“It’s my work,” you replied, chewing thoughtfully on your lip. “I’m responsible for it.”
She paused thoughtfully, temporarily waving off another Overwatch agent that came to check in with her.
“Overwatch could use someone like you,” she suggested slyly.
The corners of your lips were twitching up, a natural response to the suggestion. You’d thought on it before, even almost sent in an application, but something had stopped you. A part of you knew that your father never wanted you to become a soldier like him, but Overwatch wasn’t just soldiers, was it? They had some of the brightest minds in the entire world, and it was a good opportunity.
“Would I be on the mission to recover my research?” It was a fair question, and she shrugged her shoulders.
“That depends on you,” she answered, “The training required to become a field operative is different for everyone.”
A pause.
“I don’t think you’ll have much of a problem though.”
Your next question was interrupted before you even had the opportunity to ask it.
“(Y/N),” Dr. Rossi uttered, a bright smile on his lips despite the bandages covering one half of his face.
An uncontrollable grin pulled tight on your lips, and you hugged him, undeterred by the groan of pain from the both of you.
“I thought they were going to kill you,” you admitted, and there was a hint of guilt in your tone.
He chuckled, pulling back to give you a once over. He seemed satisfied when he realized the damage to your person was minimal.
“Seems your armor is coming along quicker than I thought.”
He gestured vaguely to the gloves covering your hands.
“Not quick enough,” you muttered. “I know some improvements I could work on. If anything, this was a wakeup call for what I need to do next.”
He nodded, and there was a glint in his eyes akin to pride. Since your time at the university, you’d grown close to him. You knew he saw you as a daughter, always had, ever since he learned more about your family history.
“You were right,” you rushed out, not giving him a chance to say whatever it was he wanted to.
“I was?” He murmured, his gaze jumping from you to Amari, only to settle back on your form.
“I want to join Overwatch,” you said with a bit of finality, nodding at the Captain. A smirk pulled at one corner of her lips.
“Good,” he stood a little straighter. “They could use someone like you, and that brain of yours.”
Captain Amari conversed with the two of you a little longer before she bid her goodbyes, with a small add in of how she’d be seeing the both of you soon.
When she left, Dr. Rossi let his excitement at your decision show. He’d barely let the nurses take a look at you before he began informing you on the application process, and promising he’d give you the best letter of recommendation known to man. The few days after the attack were spent with Dr. Rossi, as the school had decided they would suspend class for at least a week to let the students recuperate.
You didn’t mind the extra time off though. When your application was submitted, you started focusing on improving the armor. You got a significant amount done, and even made the suit accessible through the watch you kept on your wrist.
It took a total of a week and a half.
By the time you’d done so, you’d grown increasingly antsy. Should Overwatch have contacted you by now? Maybe they didn’t want your help?
Each day it got worse. You were sure that your resume was near impeccable. Sure, there were some minor modifications you made to your technological footprint. And yeah, maybe you had hacked into the Overwatch mainframe with the help of your personal UI to get more information, but they still hadn’t got back to you.
You were one day away from marching straight up to their Swiss base and reminding them yourself.
Alas, you could only focus on so much, and you were currently knee deep in improving the shielding of your suit.
Your back was to the door, hunched over your workbench as per usual. Your apartment wasn’t very big, but you’d been insistent on having an office. You used it to help develop your research, and experiment with new technology.
It was where you found yourself most nights, working on the newest upgrade. This night was different however, as you heard the small ping in your headset that told you someone had walked through the door.
You tapped on the watch at your wrist, engaging the glove on that side. You didn’t fully suit up- not yet at least.
The glasses that rested precariously on the bridge of your nose were giving you updates on the intruder’s location. If you hadn’t had them on, you were sure you’d be none the wiser of them. They were stealthy, near soundless.
A beat.
A breath.
They were closing in on your location, and you jumped to attack the moment they were under the door frame of your office.
A repulsor beam flew out, but their reaction time was too quick. They flicked what looked suspiciously like a dagger up, deflecting the shot. You didn’t have time to ponder the implications of that, instead forcing the offensive with another shot.
The hand not engaging in attack got to work on your wrist, programming the watch to extend the armor down to your elbow.
His attack was quick and precise. Shurikens flew out towards you, just as a shield morphed around your forearm.
He didn’t wait to see his attack, springing up to engage you in close quarters. You took a quick step back, forcing a more powerful beam from the activated glove.
Still, he was too quick to get caught, balancing offense and defense with a skill that breathed years of practice. You weren’t one to give in easily though, and you danced the battle along with him. The two of you must’ve made quite a sight; always evading and attacking like the push and pull of the ocean.
He was, however, at a disadvantage. You were in your home territory, and you used it to your advantage.
“IPI,” you muttered through grit teeth, forcing the intruder back a few steps with a swift blow. “Activate excess armor.”
Three beeps sounded through the room, and though you couldn’t see much of the intruder through the faceplate that covered the bottom half of their expression, you didn’t miss the sudden widening of their eyes as four suits powered themselves up and aimed their repulsor beams directly at him.
“Who are you?” You asked, finally recognizing you had the upper hand.
You didn’t let your guard down though, knowing that he was clearly trained.
A slow clap echoed off the walls of your apartment, and you nearly cursed yourself for not being more aware. All of your attention had diverted to the intruder, you hadn’t even thought of there being another one.
“Impressive,” a voice grumbled, and the man that stood before you sheathed his weapons.
You still kept your glove up for good measure.
The footsteps that thudded against your floors were heavy, and only once you saw the source did you realize why. He was tall, and muscular enough where you wouldn’t want to pick a fight without your full suit of armor. The expression on his face wasn’t one of malice, but rather amusement.
“Security protoco-”
“That’s not necessary,” the newcomer claimed, crossing his arms over his broad chest. He shot a look to the original intruder, who bowed his head in acknowledgement.
While the first man who entered your home seemed to be half machine, this man was fully human. He looked almost casual, with a beanie and a faded sweatshirt, if it weren’t for the two shotguns strapped tight to his person you’d almost believe he was a civilian.
“I’m Gabriel Reyes,” he introduced himself, and it only took you a moment to connect the name.
During your snooping of Overwatch, you’d managed to find his name among the notable commanders. However, most of his jobs were triple locked behind some of the best security on the planet. If you had more interest, you would’ve hacked into it.
He nodded his head in the direction of your door, and the cyborg made his leave as quickly as he’d come in.
“Do you make a habit of breaking into all of your applicant’s homes?” You muttered, staring at the commander.
A smirk tugged at one corner of his mouth.
It made him look far less intimidating, and years younger than his features suggested. He was well over a decade your senior, but you found yourself wondering briefly if he didn’t act more like you than an esteemed commander.
“Only the promising ones,” he assured you, turning his back without another word.
His walk was powerful and confident, no fear in you attacking. You were almost in awe of the man, if it weren’t for the slightest twinge of annoyance that he’d sent someone to your home to attack you, all for a stupid test.
“Welcome to Blackwatch, kid.” He threw a small medallion over his shoulder, the resounding clink sounding more like a nail in your coffin than anything. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
That pulled your attention from the shining glint of the symbol lying on your floor.
“Wait I don’t even know where I’m…”
He was gone.
He didn’t wait to answer you, and you realized it was probably another one of his tests.
What the hell was Blackwatch?
And why did Gabriel Reyes break into your home?
A sigh.
Looks like you’d spend the entire night hacking back into the Overwatch mainframe and figuring out just who the hell Gabriel Reyes was and why you’d been recruited to Blackwatch.

Dragon Dancer IV: Show Down
Aoi Gen turned Spider Fang in her hand, the fire light glinting off the long silver blade. Her blue eyes didn’t leave her opponents face.
Her opponent, Chisei Gen, seemed to be unarmed and unprepared for a sudden fight, but he stood to face her, the firelight reflecting in his eyes.
They stood between two lines of open flame. The hems of their yukatas turned black and curled away from the heat of the ground, but their bare feet were unaffected.
Taiga’s powerful arm had wrapped around my neck, his pistol pointed at my head, forcing me to watch while I clutched Ru’Yi to myself. This was supposed to be a peaceful meeting, but I had warned Crow that this could go bad if they continued to ignore her.
I had already noticed the snipers on the roofs of the temple complex, but now as the tension rose, I saw more weapons being revealed as they reached for their waists. Daggers slid from their sleeves, blades from their backs.
Like a sea of hovering fire flies, dozens of eyes glowed yellow in the dark. I glanced up at Taiga whose menacing golden pupils shifted at those around him.
“Everyone here is a hybrid.” I said.
“Of course,” Taiga murmured.
Aoi Gen lifted her chin. “Now that I have your attention... Chisei...”
They stood in the middle of the large arena. The air, heated up by the bonfire made them sweat, but the cool mountain breeze cut through their clothes and chilled them so quickly that on the one hand they were hot and on the other hand they shivered.
The looming buildings of the temple rose into the dark sky with gargoyles and gods snarling down from the eves on the scene below.
“My mother was Hana Minamoto. She left the Hydras at 23 to move closer to her husband, a business man in America. She was already pregnant with me at the time and she wanted a dual citizenship for me.”
Chisei did not respond, nor did he signal to the snipers on the roof to end the discussion. With a glance or a tilt of his head, he could order her to be turned into a bullet riddled corpse. But he didn’t.
"I returned to Japan when I was sixteen. Not to Tokyo but to a small town in the middle of nowhere. Why would a woman of such a prestigious background move her daughter from a wealthy place in the States to a backwater mountain village without so much as a cellphone signal?”
Chisei kept his silence but I had drawn my own conclusion: Aoi’s mother was hiding. I gathered my child to myself against the chilling breeze.
“You were told we were massacred in a gang war. In truth, we were killed off by the Hydras themselves! To make room for Tachibana... and for you.”
Neither of them moved an inch. The scene seemed to be frozen in time, save for the licking of the flames on either side of them. “My grandfather did not agree with the plan to ascend to be pureblood dragons. So we were labeled as Devils.”
At that, Chisei’s eyes narrowed slightly. She knew the family secret!
“Tell me Chisei... what was your mother’s name? What did she look like?” Her eyes flashed yellow. “Do you have any recollection at all?”
The temperature of the air had dropped so much I could suddenly see my breath. This wasn’t the mountain climate. This was Dragon Speech!
I only knew one Soul Skill that could drop temperature called ‘Winter’ but it was relatively weak, concentrated to a small spot around the caster. Now, frost was appearing on the ground at my feet, growing on the eaves of the buildings, on the pointed corners of the roofs.
I had seen a cold Soul Speech like this once before, when I was fighting Herzog, soaring above the sea of Tokyo Bay. Mingfei had uttered a single word and frozen the waves into jagged pieces of ice.
For her to be able to wield such a powerful word meant that her dragon blood purity must be very high! A-rank level!
Shaking, I struggled. “Let me go!”
Taiga tightened his arm around me.
Chisei answered her question. “No. I was told she died giving birth to me...”
“You were told a lot of things but you went along with them, without much investigation. You never mourned her or searched for her grave to clean it and pay your respects. Chisei, you really despise your mother that much?”
“What do you want?”
With the golden eyes around, the sea of weapons surrounding them and the menacing soul speech turning the ground hard like concrete, I had expected this to break into a scene of extremely dangerous violence.
Aoi had made her ruthlessness and violent nature clear from the very beginning. She had expected the same from the former leader of the Hydras, the organization that killed her family.
She knew he had a powerful army and brought her own, dispersing her men throughout the crowd quickly so that they wouldn’t be wiped out in an instant. They were armed to the teeth, fierce fighters. And Taiga held their final card.
Ru’Yi and I were their hostages.
But Chisei had stood and listened, and then conceded, in an instant throwing all these preparations into disarray. Did she believe Yakuza gangster always stuck to their guns, fought to the end, defended their family’s honor? They didn’t just concede, tossing the fight to the side like a lazy cat that didn’t want to move from its sunbeam!
When she didn’t answer, he continued. “Do you want to join the Hydras? Do you want to be Patriarch? I have no control over either of these things.”
She didn’t know Chisei like I did. He had prided himself on being a friend of justice. He was unbending to the point of cruelty to those who did not fit his vision of righteousness. He’d even pursued me, a young girl of sixteen because he believed I was a dangerous Devil. He’d attempted to kill my first child, the one named Huoli, now memorialized behind Norton Hall, for his Devil blood and Soul Skill.
She remembered that Chisei.
She didn’t see the one who had been forced to face the fact that the people who cared for him also lied to him easily. Tachibana tricked him into believing I was a Devil, tricked him into believing that the Devil Clan were only animals fit for slaughter, and tricked him into cooperating in his scheme to use them as human sacrifices for the development of Erii’s therapy.
She didn’t see the Chisei that had finally given into the Devil’s need for power and drunk the dragonblood, becoming a Devil himself.
This was a Chisei who no longer saw the world as so black and white.
“I want them to admit the truth!” Aoi snarled. “If they will not, then... “ She leveled Spider Fang at him. Her stance was perfect, reflecting years of training. “Then I will end the farce myself!”
A thick layer of ice crawled from the ground where she stood, extinguishing the flames, allowing the darkness to descend on them. The cold wind lifted and pulled at her hair.
Chisei backed away and was flanked by five guards. He held out his arm to stop them.
“All the old clan chiefs are already dead!” He growled. “Hydra has paid for what they did to you and what they did to the Devils.”
“You still live!” She turned to a blur in front of Chisei, Spider Fang flashing like a mirror from top to bottom. The work of sword masters, it was a blade so sharp it was said to cut through a body as if it had no bones.
Chisei grabbed it in the air as if it were made of wood. A thin river of blood made its way down his wrist and he looked at her with golden eyes.
As the emperor hybrid, he had a special property called Dragonbone that toughened his body like steel. He’d used it to shield me from the falling helicopter at the Red Well. Not even Spider Fang could penetrate him in this state. His hand closed around the blade and he pulled it from her grasp.
She leaped away, drawing the next one.
Tongzi.
Chisei lowered his hand. The drip of blood had already begun to slow as his body healed itself.
Though it was the shorter sword, when it came to Hybrids, it was death. Fashioned by Alchemy, it was strong enough to split Spider Fang like wire and more dangerous to him in his Dragonbone state, as it was especially made to kill Dragons and Hybrids.
At the sight of it, all the Hydra members revealed themselves by openly drawing their weapons.
Chisei was no longer High Patriarch but he was deeply beloved and respected. The threat from this sword raised their desire to defend him no matter what his status. The game had turned even more dangerous.
By drawing Tongzi, Aoi Gen had signed her own death warrant.
She stood still, her long hair fluttering. She hadn’t stopped her Soul Skill. Ice six inches thick had spread throughout the entire square and was still inching outward in a spiral pattern.
“Where is your mother now?” Chisei asked.
“Dead. Tachibana found us. Came for us. Three years ago.”
“How did you survive?”
“She kept a body double at the house. An actress paid to pretend to be me while I attended university under an assumed name.” She answered coldly, factually.
“Why come back to Japan at all?” Chisei raised an eyebrow.
“You’re here aren’t you? There are certain things only your hometown can offer.”
For a moment, they were chatting like they were getting acquainted over tea. I looked between them, a little dazed at the change of atmosphere.
“Once you kill me, what then? You’ll just be hunted again.” He said.
She leveled the blade at him. “Are you planning on dying?”
He corrected her. “I’m through killing. I’m no longer Patriarch. I just sell sunscreen on the beach.”
He turned as though to walk away, but I suddenly shuddered violently against Taiga. Something was happening. Chisei’s tone had fluctuated.
Majesty!
The ice block on the ground suddenly cracked and split open as though struck with a hammer. He kept walking but everyone, Hydra and Aoi Gen’s followers alike were brought low.
I was not effected but Taiga’s weight brought me down as he fell.  I pulled his arm off me and staggered away, tripping and slipping over the ice towards Aoi. I reached down and took Tongzi from her while she lay gasping and struggling to breathe.
As soon as the sword was in my grasp, Chisei released his Soul Skill but few people moved.
The increase in gravity caused the blood to pool at the feet. Like a pilot experiencing G-force on a plane, only the strong exertion of muscle could keep someone conscious.
The fact that Aoi Gen hadn’t passed out was a testament to both her physical strength and her dragonblood, but that didn’t mean she could stand.
Others were not so lucky. Most of the people around were still unconscious or too dazed to to do anything but moan on the ground.
Chisei turned the hilt of Spider Fang out to me. “I understand what you mean now.”
I accepted it back.
“For a long time, I believed a lot of things that were told me that weren’t true. Much of my life was a lie. A fantasy. Once I learned the truth, I had to accept it. And move on.”
“I don’t know Chu Zihang.” He continued. “But I’ve known you as a clear eyed person. Word did get back to me about your sudden mental illness. And it struck me as strange. Now you’re labeled a traitor?” He shook his head slightly. “I cannot believe it. Something is going on here. I will pray you live long enough to find out the truth.”
I lowered my head, overwhelmed by even this small simple acknowledgement. “Thank you, Chisei.”
“Get out of here.” His whisper was barely audible. “Before they recover.”
I closed my eyes tightly and vanished.

Christmas Party
Scout was pleased to learn that Christmas was much more of a universal holiday; everyone on the team was familiar with it. Meaning operation Christmas party and gift exchange was ago.
Just like with Halloween, Scout volunteered to be in charge of the party. Back home, he never would’ve dreamed of taking on such a role, but here he was really the only one suited for it as well as the only one who wanted a party bad enough to put up with being the one to organize it. Everything his mother had taught him about throwing a good party was finally being put to good use.
He ran into his first problem when upon going to town to get decorations, he learned that the lizard-aliens did not celebrate any winter holiday – could it still be called that when it wasn’t really winter here? They didn’t even seem to have a season that could be classified as winter – and thus did not sell decorations for such. There were also no pine trees anywhere to serve as Christmas trees. None of which was actually surprising when given any real thought.
“All right,” he said as he turned to Pyro and Engie, the two people who’d volunteered to help him with decorations – Demo and Spy had come to town with them too but Demo had gone off to drink and Spy had vanished shortly after they’d arrived to do who knows what. “We’ll have to improvise on the decorations and find something else to be the Christmas tree. I know a little origami so I could probably make some swan ornaments and if we can get some stuff, like cardboard or something similar shaped the right way, we could paint them to look ornaments and other Christmassy things. But you guys got any ideas?”
“I could probably make a few strings of lights,” Engie offered. “All I’d really need is some coloured glass for the bulbs, everything else I probably got at my workshop on the ship.”
“We could make a fake tree out of metal,” Pyro offered next. “Or we could just use one of the plants around here and then burn it when we’re done.”
“Hmm, let’s go with the first thing,” Scout replied. The only plants of substantial size he’d seen on this planet so far were the purple ones and not only were they ugly he didn’t trust them after Medic and Pyro’s experiment with burning them even if that was a long while a go now. “So, I guess let’s just get some basic art supplies and then maybe some red and green cloth that we can cut up and hang like tinsel kind of like we did for Halloween.”
“Sounds good,” Engie said as Pyro gave a thumbs up in agreement.
 -
With the three of them working together, it wasn’t long before they had everything. Pyro helped making ornaments out of paper and cardboard, Scout had taught him how to make origami swans – the only thing he remembered how to make. So they had a quite a few paper swans painted in Christmas colours and themes to hang up on the tree alongside the pieces of cardboard cut and painted to resemble bulb ornaments. The tree itself was made of pieces of straight narrow scrap metal wielded together and spray painted green with a metal star on top, spray painted gold. As a whole it looked pretty odd but still very much like a Christmas tree especially with how well Engie’s special made string of multi-coloured lights turned out.
The rest of the decorations were slightly less good. The ‘tinsel’ barely resembled such. And the papier-mâché wreath Scout had made looked more like a bumpy green doughnut with red and yellow poke dots than a wreath. But whatever, they were limited in what they could do and they’d done their best. The decorations weren’t the most important thing anyway, the gifts and party itself was.
Which was where Scout’s second problem came from; what gifts was he going to get for everyone. He considered them all his friends – even Medic despite their rocky start and Scout’s continued distrust of him in anything involving medical stuff and Spy despite Spy’s standoffishness towards him, less than it had ever been but still there, – so he had to get them all something. And… he wanted to get Sniper something special because… yeah.
He nabbed the team car for a solo trip to town to visit the shopping center in town. Half of it was outside in the desert sand with stalls and lizard-aliens loudly hawking their wares to passersby, not too dissimilar to outdoor shopping centers he was familiar with from back home. The other half was underground though in what seemed to be a cave carved out of the same stone that the buildings were all made out of. It sort of reminded Scout of a mall – though much more cramped and smelling very much of alien reptiles – with how it looped back around on itself. There was even a food court that Scout didn’t dare eat anything at.
Scout hadn’t spent much time here before despite how long they’d been on this planet so he got lost more than once as he wondered around looking for gift ideas. There were some gifts that were obvious, a bottle of nice rum – the alien equivalent of such as far as Scout could tell – for Demo, a fancy lighter for Pyro, a little robot toy for Engie. Upon finding a shop that sold glitter – it was apparently a universe wide phenomenon, infecting everyone everywhere – he got the stuff to make two glitter bombs, one for Spy and one for Medic because honestly, they deserved it. He’d get them something real too though, he wasn’t that much of a jerk. He might’ve gotten the supplies to make one for Pyro too but a) he might’ve enjoyed being showered in glitter, destroying the purpose of the prank and b) on the off chance he didn’t, he wasn’t the kind of person Scout wanted to make angry.
Haggling was expected but difficult because Scout’s grasp of their sign language wasn’t the best and some of them didn’t even know it. Sometimes he had to resort to communicating via pointing, gesturing, and using fingers to count out an offered price. It was a lot of work and exhausting but he somehow managed despite everything. And in the process his grasp of the language got a bit better so win, win.
He saved getting Sniper’s gift for last. It was the most important and therefore the hardest. Should he get a gift that made his crush on Sniper clear and thus use it to finally make a proper move on him? But… should he ever even make a proper move? They were coworkers, weren’t there rules about dating coworkers? And… Sniper probably didn’t even like him back, did he? Making a move might ruin everything Scout had slowly built with him and make everything awkward. So maybe Scout wasn’t ready to give that kind of gift and risk that. But it still had to be a good gift. What though?
The thing Sniper liked the best was his job: sniping. But Scout had gotten him to discuss other interests a few times. Animals was one but not an option as a gift because pets as gifts wasn’t a great idea even if they were alien pets. Camping was another but Scout didn’t know the first thing about camping so what would he even get Sniper for that? That didn’t leave him with many options.
Maybe a stuffed animal would do? But would that be too flirty? … And so far, if any store or stall sold stuffed animals, Scout hadn’t seen it and he’d been around the whole shopping center, underground and above ground, at least twice now. And he didn’t really have time to look specifically for that, he had to get back to base soon, he’d already been gone for almost three hours now. Meaning he had to settle for something soon.
With a grimace, he picked up his walking pace. He had to find something good soon, he just had to.
 -
A bit more than an hour later, he finally returned to base. Spy appeared before him as he stepped out of the car.
“Where’d you go?” he asked as if it were any of his business.
“Christmas shopping,” Scout answered as he slammed the car door shut. He pulled all his shopping bags close to make sure Spy couldn’t peek into them without making his intent to do so obvious. “I got you something too, don’t worry.”
“Oh.” Spy’s eyebrows rose in surprise. “What is it?”
Scout couldn’t help a mischievous smile coming to his face. “You’ll have to wait and see. And don’t you dare sneak into my room to try peek before Christmas.” If anyone would do that, it’d be Spy. “I’m going wrap them right away and I’m going to boobytrap the hiding spot so don’t even try it.”
“I wasn’t going to,” Spy said, speaking just a bit too fast; he’d for sure been thinking about it. “I don’t care anyway.” He made a dismissive hand gesture towards Scout before vanishing.
 -
The big day was finally here and Scout couldn’t be more excited. Especially since, Christmas was so much of a recognized holiday that the Administrator gave them a whole two weeks off for it. Miss Pauling even showed up for the party, meaning Scout’s party was basically already as success.
There was food and drink on one table. Most of the ‘food’ was sweets: cupcakes, a whole cheesecake, and lots of gingerbread in the form of gingerbread men as well as a lopsided house, all of which was made by Heavy and Pyro. Unfortunately, they’d run out of normal alcohol, leaving them with only the alien stuff meaning Scout had to stick to plain old water from the ship’s purification system like some kind of boring nerd. He could’ve let Demo bring a jug of his homebrewed moonshine too but… he’d tried it once and it was nasty. So by the end of the night he was probably going to be the only one sober other than Pyro and probably Spy – Spy seemed to avoid the alien alcohol too for some reason. Which meant he should probably hand out the gifts he’d got for everyone before the party dragged on too long.
He went to Demo and Soldier, drinking playing cards together first.
“Oh,” Demo said as Scout handed him his gift and then Solider his. “Laddie, you didn’t have to. Most people in our line of work will throw a party but… not always do the gift thing.”
“I know,” Scout replied. “I ain’t that kind guy though. I love Christmas and you guys put me in charge of this whole party so… I had to. I don’t except anything in return though, don’t worry.” He’d just wanted to get his new friends stuff.
“Don’t complain maggot,” Soldier said. “Just say ‘thank you’ and open your gift.” He was already following that advice, pulling the small pet sweater that would hopefully fit Lt. Bites out of the box. He gasped at the sight of it. “Is this what I think it is?” he asked, looking back up at Scout.
“Uh… depends on what you think it is. But I thought you might like to put it on your raccoon.” Everyone had long since given up trying to convince Soldier that Lt. Bites wasn’t a raccoon.
“I will go put it on her immediately.” Soldier stood up and rushed out of the room. He’d probably return with her on his shoulder soon which wasn’t great, she still liked to hiss at people who weren’t Soldier. But whatever, she rarely bit anyone anymore despite her name so it would probably be fine.”
“Oh wow,” Demo said, drawing Scout’s gaze back to him. He’d too opened his gift and pulled out the bottle, undisguised joy on his face. “This is the good stuff, for this planet anyway, thanks.”
“You’re welcome.” So far everything was turning out fantastic.
Next, he went to Pauling and Heavy, chatting in a corner while enjoying some gingerbread and alcohol. Just like Demo, they were both a bit surprised to be receiving a gift from him. But…
“Is very nice, thank you,” Heavy said upon pulling out the set of kitchen knives Scout had gotten for him because he was the person on the team who cooked the most.
For Pauling he’d gotten a toy space ship because he really did not know what else to get her. He didn’t know her as well as he knew everyone else on the team due to how busy she was always was. She seemed pleased with it though, smiling as she pulled it out of its little box. “Thank you.”
After chatting with them for a bit longer, he moved onto to Spy – he couldn’t hold back his anticipation for the glitter bomb much longer – and Engie. Everyone seemed to be hanging out in pairs right now which was just fine with him, it made the whole gift giving thing a tad easier.
“Hey guys,” he said as he sidled up to them, making sure to be closer to Engie than Spy. “Merry Christmas!” He pulled out the gifts labelled for them and handed them over.
“Uh… wasn’t expecting it but thanks,” Engie said.
“Yes, I suppose a thanks is in order,” Spy said before going straight to unwrapping his. Wrapping paper gone, it was time to lift the lid and… boom, the glitter bomb went off, spraying glitter everywhere, especially on Spy.
It was hilarious. The glare he turned on Scout once it was over made it impossible not to laugh. Even Engie chuckled.
“I shouldn’t be surprised,” Spy said, voice dripping with venom.
Scout rained in his laughter enough to answer. “There’s a real gift in there too, under all the glitter.”
Still glaring daggers at Scout, Spy upended the box into his hand. “A knife,” he said once enough of the remaining glitter fell away to reveal it. “Great. … You have any idea how hard this stuff is to clean up?”
“Well uh…”
“I need a shower,” Spy interrupted before vanishing. But, the glitter was still visible, clinging to him and making him not very invisible at all. It was just too good; another burst of laughter bubbled up in Scout.
“He kept the knife with him though,” Engie said once Spy was gone. “So at least he likes that part of the gift… I think. That maybe wasn’t a great idea though, he’s going to mad now.”
“Whatever.” Scout wasn’t worried about that “It’s his own fault for being a jerk. But like, open your gift now, it doesn’t have any glitter in it because I wouldn’t do that to you.”
Engie grunted in response as he finished unwrapping his present. “Ah cute,” he said in response to the little robot. “Thanks.”
“You’re very welcome,” Scout replied before turning to face everyone else as they gathered to investigate the commotion. Pyro went straight to playing in the glitter on the floor, crouching down to run his gloved hand through it. Yep, not getting him a glitter bomb had been a good idea.
“Did you really have to set off a glitter bomb in here?” Pauling asked, giving him a slight frown.
“I’ll clean it up, I promise.” Scout would never dream of doing otherwise. Glitter bombs being a favourite prank of his and his bros, he had a good amount of experience in cleaning up the after math of them on a variety of different surfaces.
But while everyone else was gathered here, he reached into his bag to pull out Pyro and Medic’s gifts. He quickly handed them to their recipients before retreating. While he trusted Spy not to hurt him for the prank – as harsh as his words could be sometimes, he’d never once actually done anything to Scout – he wasn’t so sure about Medic and he didn’t want to risk anything. Under the glitter bomb in Medic’s gift was a bag of treats for his dragons but that probably wouldn’t earn him much forgiveness so it was best to get out and hide for it a bit.
On his way, he hooked an arm through Sniper’s – he’d been on the fringe of the group – pulling him with him. Sniper just sort of let him, not saying anything even when they exited the room and Scout brought him outside and around back instead.
“Let me guess,” Sniper said when Scout finally pulled them to a stop when they were behind the building. “You put a glitter bomb in Medic’s gift too and you’re afraid of him so you ran away before he could open it?”
“Bingo,” Scout replied. “But it’s not that I’m afraid,” it kind of was though but that made him sound weak, “it’s more, I don’t want to give him a possible reason to try to dissect me again.”
Sniper raised an eyebrow. “’Again’?”
“Eh, it’s a long story, don’t worry about it.” Scout didn’t want to talk about it and that was a while ago now so who would even believe him? Especially since the scars were mostly faded. “Anyway, I brought you out here with me because I still need give you your gift.” And because he wanted some alone time with him but he couldn’t admit to that.
He reached into his bag one last time to pull out the final gift and handed it to Sniper. Who accepted after a second or two of staring it uncomfortably with a slight grimace.
“I uh… didn’t get you anything,” he said.
“It’s fine,” Scout assured him. “I didn’t expect anyone would. I just did it because I wanted to. Open it though, I need to know if you like it. And uh I promise it’s not glitter.”
“That uh… kinda makes me worry that it might be glitter. But…” He trailed off with a shrug before removing the wrapping paper. He as bit more cautious with lifting giftbox’s lid, holding a bit far away from his body. When it became obvious that nothing bad was going to happen though, he pulled it close again to look inside and pull out the gift.
“Oh,” he said, holding it up to the light. “It’s nice.”
“You really think so?” Scout had looked and looked for something good before coming upon that badass tooth necklace. He had no idea what animal the teeth came from, only that they were large, pointed, and looked cool. Conjuring up an image of Sniper wearing it wasn’t hard either, it fit his general aesthetic.
“Yeah,” Sniper said. “I always wanted a shark tooth necklace. Though I suppose these ain’t from a shark, not the right shape and on an alien planet.” He briefly removed his hat to slip it on over his head. “Thanks though, I like it.”
“Awesome.” Scout almost had to hold back a sigh of relief. He’d been more nervous about this than he’d thought. But it had gone well, heck everything had gone well. And as a cherry on top, to avoid Medic’s wrath for a bit, he could get away with spending an hour or two alone with Sniper out here before going back inside to enjoy the rest of the party.

Last minute shopping
Summary: Garrus always forgets Valentine’s Day is coming until the last moment. Now he’s stuck. To make matters worse, he’s shopping for two this year. What the hell does he get the special girl in his life, and what does bioweapons have to do with any of this?
---
Why was everything about Valentine's Day so... pink?
“No...”
Garrus heaved a sigh as he put a package of chocolate back on the shelf and stepped away. Honestly, he had no idea if it was any good regardless – this was the levo part of the store after all. The bright paper and ribbons looked pretty, but they just weren't... right. Something in his gut was telling him that much anyway.
Right. As if he had any idea what right was.
His mandibles twitched as he glanced around. The turian had been at this for the better part of ten minutes, and all he got for it was sore legs and the vague sense he was being stupid. This was always how it ended – him standing in the aisle, staring blankly until he gave up or some helpful human gave him an idea.
But he didn't want that. Not this year.
Clenching his talons, Garrus continued his work. Thoughts of his husband kept blinking through his mind – Alistair liked milk chocolate, but not white. This one brand made him sick for some reason, avoid it like the plague. It should probably be easy to carry, given his work. But that left him with still a large amount of material to work with. Frustrating didn't even begin to cover it.
And... well, he was shopping for two after all.
“I don't even know what to get her...”
The worry ate away at him as he paced the aisle. Truly, Valentine's Day was more of a human thing even though most of the council species had picked it up in some way or another over the last few decades. He himself thought it was all a little silly, but the look he got when the day came often made it worth it. Though, that was the problem in and of itself – did she celebrate it?
Well... if she didn't, at least she could appreciate the present.
Garrus rounded the corner, eyes still pinned to the shelves. Up ahead was a small pile of stuffed animals, jostled from people picking through to find their favorites. Some of them had even wound up on the floor. He shook his head and bent down to scoop one up, returning it to the display with a light touch. They always tended to rip if he handled them.
“There you go.”
He wasn't sure why he was talking to a stuffed animal besides the fact it was a recent habit imprinted upon him. If the vids were to be believed, these sorts of things had feelings. He didn't believe them – or at least he said he didn't – but... it was only polite to pick things up, right?
Yeah, he was getting soft. Oh well.
While he was there, Garrus evaluated the pile with a sharp eye. Most of it was bears – humans really liked those for some reason. He would've given up and turned away, but at the last minute one of them caught his eye – it was buried near the bottom of the pile. Maybe it was the challenge, but he couldn't look away.  Mouth set into a thin line, the turian dug through the pile with careful talons. After a few moments and displacement of a few plush bear rumps, he pried his prize free.
“Well... want to come home with me?”
He was asking a cat doll, half expecting for its red thread mouth to open answer him. It didn't – because that would be weird – but it kept smiling at him. Its yellow button eyes stared up at him, as if asking him to take it home. And oh... he couldn't resist that face.
At least... that solved his one problem. What the fuck was he going to get his husband, though?
Maybe you can help me find a hamster.” He patted the doll on the head and sat it to the side to keep digging. Maybe it was a trick of the light, but his new friend almost seemed to be shining. Of course, that might've just been the fake black fur and yellow button eyes. But whatever, he was going to think what he wanted.
At any rate... come on, lucky hamster...
---
“Al? Danny? I'm home!”
Garrus' flanged voice echoed off the entry way as he closed the front door behind him. There was no one in the living room, and the TV was off. Someone's abandoned math homework lay spread out on a table, one of the questions erased to near extermination by a half chewed pencil. Just the sight of it made him chuckle as he walked past, following the sound of music.
Of course, he stopped in horror as he realized it was coming from the kitchen.
“No.”
The turian's pace quickened and he hid behind the wall in order to get a better view. His old merc days came in handy as he sought solid cover. It was  the same concept as hiding from an enemy sniper anyway – if they can't see you, they can't shoot you. Or in this case, nobody could call him out on ruining the surprise. These days, that was as bad as getting shot.
He got a good view of the back of Alistair Shepard's head as the man poured something into a bowl. Next to him, a young turian girl was testing a mixture. Her talon dipped in, and when she didn't recoil in horror that was a pretty good sign.
“How is it, Danny?”
“I think we need to add a little more of this, Pops.”
Garrus' heart bloomed as he heard the two speak. Inside the kitchen and still unaware, Alistair pouted and turned to face his daughter. She was at his shoulder, and soon would be towering over him – much to his displeasure. The turian thought it was funny, honestly.
“But the recipe says-”
Danny held up her small hand with the air of an expert. “And my tongue says we add more. Trust me on this, Pops. I'm the dexpert here.”
Her father chuckled in that way that made Garrus weak in the knees. “Alright, Miss Dexpert. I'll trust you on this one. But if it grows eyes and tries to waddle off the table we're going to have some problems.”
The mixture of laughter brought life into the kitchen in ways it had never felt before six months ago. Garrus felt his mandibles twitch – the happy one. They twitched that way a lot lately, and it showed no signs of slowing down. If they never stopped, he wouldn't complain.
Given things in the kitchen were handled, he attempted to turn to beat a quick retreat. However, in his haste he missed the chair leg that caught him by surprise. He hit the floor right mandible first, stars dancing before his eyes. They didn't clear out as the heavy thump summoned the other residents of the house so fast it made light look slow.
Great. He was busted.
“Dad fell down.” Danny's tone was flat as she no doubt turned to her other father. “Pops, is he going to make it?”
Alistair held back a chuckle as he knelt to examine his husband. Garrus gave him an embarrassed look, which only made the man laugh harder. At least the blow to his pride was only as lethal as the soreness in his mandible – he could live with that.
“Oh, I think so. He's got a pretty hard head.” The former marine's smile turned into a smirk as he patted his husband on the jaw. “Of course, that's if he survives the interrogation for spying on us. What do you say we get to work on that?”
Garrus was the one chuckling now as he watched his daughter cheer for proper interrogation methods. He held up his hands. “I swear, Commander, there's no espionage here. Just making sure you weren't creating any bioweapons.”
It was fun, watching his husband turn that shade of red. Danny was giggling even harder now, her mandibles twitching so much she might have been able to achieve flight. He loved when she did that – and it was happening more and more by the day. One day they might not stop at all, and apart from making talking pretty hard that wouldn't be too bad in his book.
Ok, maybe a little bit. He liked hearing her talk too.
“Don't worry, Dad. I made sure Pops stayed within Council regulations.” Her eyes went wide as she glanced to his side. “Are those for us?”
Damn, she'd gotten him. Yet Garrus didn't mind as he reached for his bag and peeked inside to make sure everything was in order. When he came back, there was his daughter's jewel toned eyes staring at him, begging to know. It was downright adorable.
Well... shit.
“Consider them part of a peace treaty to secure goodwill.” Garrus felt his entire body warm as he handed over the stuffed cat that look so much like the one Danny's aunt had. “Happy Valentine's Day?”
And then that plush was being squished into him as the young turian wrapped her arms around his carapace and squealed her thank you's. Up above, Alistair smiled and his eyes twinkled in the way they had when they had decided to adopt the girl. Parental love, or so he figured, did that to them both.
Maybe this wasn't such a dumb day after all. If it made Danny happy, he would be more than happy to put up with it.
“We made you candy, but you're going to have to wait because Pops can't measure right.” Danny was hugging her stuffed animal and beaming. “Wanna see?”
She held out her small hand to him and Garrus couldn't say no. Up he went, towering over the small girl. Soon they were joined by the house's only human who sought the turian's free hand. Now, sandwiched between the two people in the universe he loved the most, he could go and see just what they had made him.
With any luck, it would be edible. But even if it wasn't, that wouldn't be too bad. He had a pretty strong stomach... and if it got bad, the one who put him in the hospital could get him out too. It was a good arrangement.

The storm belittled the roof of the warehouse, testing its strength. The wind howled as it was forced mercilessly by the force of the storm, wanting to get out of the chaotic mess that often came associated with a thunderstorm. Thick droplets of rain crashed down onto the earth and whatever object was elevated, almost as if the storm was crying itself and the thunder were sobs taken by the storm.
Taehyung felt an uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach that wasn’t going away. It had put Taehyung on edge, because he wasn’t sure what was causing it. Whether it was the stormy weather, or what he thought the ham he ate was actually off when he thought it wasn’t, Taehyung wasn’t sure. All Taehyung knew that everything was making him jumpy, and it was starting to annoy his hyungs.
“For the love of – what is going on with you?” Jin asked as Taehyung dropped yet another box full of weapons. Taehyung merely sighed before picking the box up as the sounds of the rain hitting the roof hit the almost drowned out the sound of Jin’s voice.
Jimin glanced at Taehyung, a frown etching his face. He didn’t know what was wrong with him. He’d better get his act together before Joon or Yoongi saw him in this state. Taehyung started to unbox the contents of the box onto the shelf when he felt shivers down his spine.
“Joon?” Taehyung called out, causing the six other members to momentarily pause what they were doing. Usually, when they were handling business to do with the mafia, everyone called Joon ‘RM’, not Joon. RM turned to face Taehyung, an eyebrow arched on his tanned skin.
“What is it?” Taehyung placed the box down on the ground before walking over to Namjoon.
“I’ve got a bad feeling about all of this. Do we really need to be doing this tonight?” Taehyung averted his eyes from Namjoon. Yes they were all considered brothers, but all it took was Namjoon to think Taehyung was questioning his authority for Taehyung to get punished severely.
As the Bangtan Boys conversed, Jun was getting his men into place to ambush the warehouse. It had taken careful planning, no thanks to help from Chin Sun, and Jun would be damned if she would ruin this whole operation.
He had his sniper in place, ready to gun down Taehyung. Yes, this was simply business dealing with BTS, but with Taehyung it was more personal. Jun didn’t know what he knew about what happened between his father and Jun’s, but this was more of personal satisfaction if Jun took Taehyung out.
Jun looked to his left and to his right, checking where all his men were. They were all set.
Taehyung sighed, giving up trying to convince Namjoon to change his mind. It was a lost cause. However, as Taehyung turned to go back to the box, the first gun shot was rung out.
Taehyung awoke with a start, and had to shut his eyes again, hoping not to get blinded by the sun. He had foolishly left his blinds open the night before and was dealing with the consequences. He rubbed his hand over his face. It had been a week and a half since that night, and Taehyung was still recovering.
Sitting up in his bed, his body ached and groaned with dissatisfaction, not wanting to leave the comfort that was associated with his bed.  A ding came from his right, and Taehyung looked over to its source, his phone. With a heafty sigh, he picked up his phone, dreading what he would see.
It was another text from Da Eun. Taehyung sighed, dropping his phone beside him. She’d been texting him asking if he was okay, if he was coming into the university that day, and this morning’s text had been her asking if he was even alive.
Taehyung got out of his bed and walked over to his bathroom, looking in the mirror. That night he had escaped with a bullet in his bicep, a black eye, split lip, swollen jaw and other bruising lining other parts of his body. He had been drenched in sweat and blood, although he didn’t know whether it as his own or someone else’s.
Overall, Taehyung did not look ready to go back into civilisation. He couldn’t be able to answer the numerous questions that would be asked of him, and he didn’t know how he could look the innocent seeming Da Eun in the eye. Jin was supposed to go back to teaching any day now, when Joon gave him permission too.
Taehyung heard his call tone, and felt his shoulders sage. It was Da Eun. He knew it was. She called every now and then. Taehyung didn’t mean to be ignoring her messages or her calls, and didn’t know how he was going to explain to her why he was doing so.
“Taehyung!” The booming voice of one Jung Hoseok called, causing Taehyung to groan. All Taehyung wanted to do was shower, and he didn’t even get to do that. Taehyung exited his room swiftly, hiding his discomfort and pain as he went down the stairs off their multi-story building.
All the members of the mafia sat in their ‘office’, some members looking grim, others had their faces alight with the signs of hope, which made Taehyung all the more curious. He sat down on the arm of the chair that Yoongi was sitting in, waiting quietly to be spoken too.
“We’re at a bit of an impasse right now. Jungkook suggested having some of the girls from Blackpink’s residence come down to keep us company. We’re split fifty-fifty. You’re our deciding vote,” Joon spoke, not lifting his eyes off of his glass of drink.
Taehyung was caught off-guard momentarily. For this even to be considered an idea, it meant that Namjoon had to agree with it. This was a rare occasion, and without haste, Taehyung was voicing his agreement with the idea. It was not for the company of the girls of course, it was to see Joon relax, even if it were for just a little while. His leader had been overworking himself a lot recently.
Chin Sun was starting to get frustrated. Jun was breathing down her neck to get results, and he just didn’t seem to understand that she couldn’t get anything done with Taehyung ignoring her. She also had to get use to the fact that the person Jun had lost was her body guard. Yes, she despised the idea of having one, but she had gotten on with hers a fair bit.
Chin Sun left the lecture hall, annoyance buzzing in her veins. No Jin, no Jungkook, no Jimin and no Taehyung. She dialled Taehyung’s number again, and was not surprised when it kept ringing and ringing, with no answer. With nothing left to do, she went towards the main office.
She didn’t know how she was going to convince the office lady to give her Taehyung’s address. Maybe she might need to send a message to Jun, which she really didn’t want to do. Walking into the air-conned room, she took a deep breath, letting the cold air fill her lungs and stretch her chest.
“May I help you?” A younger lady asked, not looking up from her computer.
“Uh yes, I was wondering if I would be able to get my partner’s address. It’s urgent and we need to work on this assessment and he hasn’t been here . . .” Chin Sun held her breath as the office lady looked up at her, raising one of her stencilled eyebrows.
“I’m sorry it’s agai-“
“Please. I just need Kim Taehyung’s address so that –“
“Oh Taehyung. Don’t say anymore. I can give it to you, without going against the policy.” Chin Sun was in disbelief. This was surely too easy. “I just hope he doesn’t rope you in too deep dear. Anyway, tell him Yeri sends her regards.”
Yeri gave Chin Sun a piece of paper and Chin Sun was stunned. How? Snapping out of her daze, she picked up the piece of paper, bowing at the Yeri while saying her thanks. Chin Sun turned and walked out of the building.
Jun hadn’t given her a new body guard as he couldn’t spare it. Therefore, Chin Sun could go there without any hesitation of her brother interfering. Looking up the location on her phone, Chin Sun only hoped that her brother didn’t notice how much the public transport was going to cost her.
An hour and a half later, Chin Sun found herself standing outside a three story building, her anxiety spiking. What was she even doing here? She should probably just wait until Taehyung comes back. This was rude for crying out loud! As Chin Sun’s frustration and annoyance dissipated over the long travel, so did her confidence.
Well, I’m here now.
With that, Chin Sun walked up to the door and opened it. A man with red hair opened the door slowly, eyeing her. “You must be one of the new girls Rose was talking about,” was all he said before Chin Sun felt herself being pulled into the house.
The first thing she noticed was how hot the room was. The next thing she noticed was the barely clad female bodies all around the room, their discarded clothing by her feet. Chin Sun didn’t know whether to run or throw up.
“Why do you look anxious?” The man asked, a smile gracing his lips. “Hey Jimin! You’re girl is finally here. She’s new so don’t break her!” The man bellowed, and Chin Sun felt her cheeks heat up. What had she gotten herself into?
Jimin came bounding down the stairs, and froze when he came face to face with Chin Sun. “What the hell? Da Eun?” Chin Sun nodded, knowing she looked like she was a deer caught in headlights. She tried not to look at the cut on his cheek, or the dark bruise on his arm.
“I’m sorry! I only came to see Taehyung and if he was okay! I just wanted to work on the assignment. But you guys are busy so I’ll leave,” Chin Sun rushed out, turning towards the door, ready to leave.
“Nonsense! I’ll go get him for you now,” Jimin said before he called out Taehyung’s name. “There’s someone here to see you, you ignorant bastard!”
“I’m not ignorant!” Taehyung called back as he walked into the room. Jimin nodded towards Chin Sun, and Taehyung turned his gaze.  “Shit.” Taehyung couldn’t believe this. He felt the rest of the members walk in slowly, two out of the remaining members not confused as to who she is.
“Da Eun?” Jin asked, stepping forward. Chin Sun tried not to look at any of them because all she could see was the bruises and cuts scattered around their body. She didn’t want to believe it. She never wanted to find all of this out! How could she look at Jun now knowing he was right? Or Taehyung?
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have come over uninvited. I’m glad to see you’re alive Taehyung, Jimin, Jungkook and Jin. I’ll just leave now though,” Chin Sun said before pushing her way out the door. Her mind was racing so much that she missed Taehyung calling out her name, or the footsteps coming towards her.
Suddenly, instead of facing the sidewalk, Chin Sun now saw her looking into Taehyung’s eyes. “We need to talk.”

Voltron fic: “Scattered” Ch. 23
Rated T. Genfic/no ships. S2 AU. You can begin at the beginning here or read it on FF-Net and AO3 when I get it posted there, probably in the morning. FEEDBACK IS WELCOME.

Matt lifted his eyes from his tablet where he had been texting with Mina, Lance’s sister. He was hearing all about the family drama after Lance had left again: dad shouting, mother and grandmother crying, his older brother actually trying to chase after him in spite of the media crews outside and Lance using his cloaking device to get back to his pod.
Gotta go. Mom just got back. I need to find out if she’s made up her mind about going back with us.
I can’t believe you’re even thinking about going back. It’s not like Lance, they don’t need you to fly one of those lion ship things.
They need all the help they can get. I can help run the castle, help with tech support. I want to be out there in the stars again, but on my own terms. Listen, I figure Katie will get back in touch soon. I’ll tell her Lance needs to call.
OK. Thanks.
Matt set the tablet down and began putting groceries away while Colleen continued to bring them in from the garage. He was drooling almost immediately at seeing so many old favorites.
He paused, one hand in a grocery sack and the other holding a package of Oreo cookies. He was still staring at the blue package when Colleen came in with the last armloads. She dropped the bags on the table and he jumped.
“Are you really going to be okay with going right back out there when you have so much to catch up on?”
“That’s the beauty of it, Mom. We can come back. The castle has this thing that the guys call wormhole technology. It lets you cross galaxies in a short time.”
Colleen raised an eyebrow. “So why did it take nearly two months for Katie to come back?”
Matt shrugged. “From what I’ve gathered, they’ve been going pretty much nonstop with this war until Keith got thrown back here—”
“Exactly! What if he hadn’t turned up here? Would you all have come back at all?”
“Of course! I mean, once Lance found Dad and me, there was no way we weren’t going to get back here and let everyone know we were okay!”
Colleen bit her lip and looked away.
“Mom, what is it? We used to go on travel adventures all the time. Why is this different?”
“Because we never traveled to a war zone?”
Ouch. Okay, yeah. Got me there.
Matt put the cookies down and circled the table to face his mother. “Okay. That’s fair. But, the castle is pretty safe. The lions do most of the combat—”
“Which means Katie is constantly in danger.”
“True, but it’s not quite as dangerous as you think. Katie told us that so far only Lance and Shiro have needed to spend a long time in what they call cryo-pods, these things that can heal really bad injuries, usually in a day or so. But in two months that’s only two cases of getting seriously hurt. Katie got a concussion at one point, but she was out of that cryo-pod in an hour and good as new.”
He could tell that this was brand new information to his mother; the set of her shoulders shifted up and her expression was almost intrigued. “That…is interesting.” She looked out of the nearest window for a moment. “And it’s really just the five of them fighting? No other…gunnery men or soldiers fighting from the castle itself? I guess all the fighting is in space, not on a planet?”
“Um, there aren’t any others. I mean, yeah, there were lots of us on board when they rescued everyone in the slave camp, but it’s just the five of them piloting Voltron. Coran and Allura run the castle by themselves. And that’s it.”
She jerked back to face him. “What do you mean, that’s it?”
Matt held up his hands, showing seven fingers. “I mean, the planet that the princess and Coran are from was destroyed. They’re the last two of their kind in the universe. And after Shiro and Katie and the others found the Blue Lion, they finally had enough people to fly Voltron and start trying to do something about the Galra Empire.”
“They lost…their entire planet? They’re all alone?”
Matt nodded, a little unsure why that fact had grabbed Colleen’s attention.
She refocused, looking at the bags still on the table. “Here, help me. Let’s get these put away and then find your father. It’s time to thrash out the pros and cons properly.”

As Shiro went to the Castle-ship’s main entrance to meet the Garrison and Earthforce delegations, he noticed that there were combat robots positioned at regular intervals closer to the entrance. He had his helmet in one hand and brought it up so he could speak into the communicator.
“Coran? Allura? Can someone explain why we have training drones in the hallways?”
“That was my idea,” Allura replied. “I had Hunk and Lance help me amass as many drones as possible to station in the hallway between the main entrance and the A.I. room. It occurred to me that we might need a show of strength.”
Shiro couldn’t argue with that. As great as their technological advantage was, they were still only seven people…and four mice.
Does Earthforce know that yet?
“And Shiro, as soon as you’ve turned everyone over to Coran, would you position the Black Lion at the entrance? I do hope it will consent to judge Darzi if the assigned punishment from your people isn’t enough.”
Shiro bit his lip, since he was fairly certain that any punishment outlined by Earthforce’s legal codes would not be enough, especially for Allura. In the back of his mind, Black rumbled in agreement.
So you really can do that? See into a person’s…soul?
He felt a nudge from Black, asking permission for something. Shiro sent back confused assent.
Lean back against the wall.
Shiro did, realizing that at some point in the last day or so that their communication had expanded to include words.
Let me in, my paladin?
Shiro wasn’t exactly sure how this worked, but he concentrated on the bond they shared, trying to find a way to open it more. He could feel Black doing something similar, and then—
Black was him and he was Black.
Black watched through his eyes as the hover-jeeps approached. The figures inside were both people and swirling auras of color. Most of them ranged in shades of green and blue and gray.
Shiro looked down at his left hand. He also had an aura, an effervescent white with streaks of pale purple. It was like a cloudy sky with threatening thunderstorms.
He looked back up as the hover-jeeps stopped some twenty yards away. As one person moved to leave the backseat of the second vehicle, they revealed who had been sitting behind them.
The greasy brown of that person sparked a wave of nausea in Shiro. It was polluted, vile, corrupted beyond any hope of cleansing.
Three guesses as to who that is, and the first two don’t count.
It took a few seconds for Black to work out what Shiro meant, then the lion’s presence in the bond rumbled in amusement before turning serious once more.
When you have the opportunity, confirm to the princess that this creature will be judged.
Shiro felt Black withdraw, returning their bond to normal. He felt dizzy and shook his head to clear it, grateful for the wall as it held him up. He took a deep breath and put his helmet on. He didn’t think an ambush here was likely, but after seeing the sniper attack on Keith in his recorded memory, Shiro was taking no chances.
 <> <> <> <> <>
As Black withdrew from merging with Shiro, he let one angry growl echo in his hangar.
Red, of course, had been eavesdropping. Her smugness spread through their connection.
Black acknowledged her. You were right. There is no question of his guilt. And very little question as to his sanity.
Oh, I know. And congratulations on uniting with your paladin. I was sure you’d be the last to do it this time, considering.
This paladin…is nothing like the other. Black growled again, remembering.
Red was quick to distract. I agree. All of us are in good hands this time.
 <> <> <> <> <>
As he pulled the hover-jeep up to the massive ship, Iverson glanced at the figure waiting for them. He looked again, because it had seemed like Shirogane’s eyes were glowing. But then the former Kerberos pilot shook his head and pushed himself away from the wall, putting his helmet on.
Iverson looked down, letting the wave of shame run through him. Beside him, Benítez sucked her cheeks in, seeing the clear sign of distrust and acknowledging that it was earned.
As the black-and-white figure approached, Iverson took in his upright posture and steady stride. He had been so focused on Kogane and then reeling from the revelations that the Garrison team of misfits had risen to some kind of honored rank in an alien culture…he hadn’t spared much thought for his former star pupil.
The last time he had seen the young pilot in person, he was in rags, battered and scarred, and being treated like a prisoner. He had been shouting, desperate to communicate something. Iverson had followed the rules for dealing with potential alien contact, rules that were being tested for the first time. They had started their examinations, looking for anything that might be dangerous to humans. And when the one tech had discovered that it wasn’t some kind of armor over the actual arm but a replacement…he had followed the book again and sedated him.
But now, Iverson was seeing the full potential of Takashi Shirogane realized. The Garrison’s golden boy had been forged into steel through his travails.
As they got out, Iverson moved to be the first in line. They paused, looking at one another, and Iverson’s right hand twitched up and then back down when the expected salute from Shirogane failed to materialize.
He’s not my cadet anymore. He’s not part of the Garrison.
“Commander,” Shirogane greeted neutrally. His gaze shifted and he nodded to the person behind Iverson. “General.”
Benítez took over, introducing the rest of their party. When Darzi was mentioned, Iverson thought once more that a hint of gold flashed through Shirogane’s gray eyes.
“If you all will follow me, please.”
 <> <> <> <> <>
Pidge was waiting by the door and waved as she saw Shiro round a corner. “Okay, places everyone!”
Coran tweaked a chair one last time and moved to the panel that controlled the memory display. Allura stood in front of her chair on the raised platform, a little bigger and more substantial than the others. It suggested a throne. Shiro and Lance would be to her left and the rest of the paladins would be to her right. Putting them at a higher level than the rest would emphasize that the delegation was in a place where they held only as much authority as the Alteans were willing to grant.
Below on the floor they had set up a basic layout for the court martial. The judge advocate and the recorder would sit at the center table. The prosecution and defense were set up on the proper sides. A row of chairs behind them were ready for the rest of Earth’s delegation.
Pidge took her place between Keith and Hunk. She reached over and grabbed Keith’s hand for a final squeeze. Allura noticed and copied Pidge, taking Keith’s other hand.
“No matter what happens, he will never touch you again. None of them will touch any of you.”
 <> <> <> <> <>
Benítez tried to keep her gaze straight ahead and not show any nervousness—there were almost certainly cameras monitoring the hallways with these Alteans observing their every move—but it was one of the hardest things she could remember doing. Some kind of sentry automatons lined the hallway, taller than any of them. They showed no visible weapons but she could easily imagine those metal fists had enough power behind them to smash a jaw or some ribs.
The fact that the only movement through these wide hallways was their own made it that much more intimidating.
Shirogane led them into a room with more of the silvery-white walls and pale blue lighting. There was some kind of apparatus in the center, a raised round dais. Furniture was set up on one side, tables and chairs obviously configured to mimic a courtroom.
What was different was the long platform to the side with a row of people standing along it.
Garrett, Holt, Kogane, and McClain, like Shirogane, were in the stylized armor they had seen before. Benítez thought about it briefly: Kogane had been flying the red lion ship that matched his armor. They knew there was a blue lion ship and here was McClain in blue. She took one more look at the others. It was reasonable to assume there were at least three more of these ships: green, yellow, and… where was Shirogane?
The princess took a step forward. Today her gown was white with layers that fell like petals down her arms and skirt: pastel shades of pink, blue, green, yellow, and purple. Her white hair was piled high on her head. She began speaking in accented English, causing several of the delegation who had not been aware of her before to glance at one another. Had she really learned English from the cadets in so short a time? Was there some kind of translation programming happening?
“I am Princess Allura of the planet Altea. Thank you for honoring the Interstellar Charter of Cooperation. Your willingness will be noted should you choose to apply for membership in that alliance through your United Nations organization.”
Benítez swallowed at that. They knew about the U.N. and had not used that knowledge against Earthforce yet.
She had to do everything she could to get Darzi convicted. They could not screw this up.
 <> <> <> <> <>
Keith kept his eyes fixed on the door as introductions were made, watching for Shiro. He didn’t dare look at the floor, which might be taken as a sign of fear or dishonesty, and he wasn’t about to look at anyone from the delegation and risk making eye contact with Darzi.
“Sam Perkins, witness for the prosecution.”
Keith heard that name and movement drew his eye in spite of himself. The medtech that had quite probably saved his life gave him a small wave and a smile. Keith nodded back briefly before returning his gaze to the door as Shiro slipped inside and moved to his seat.
A new voice broke in, General Caplan’s. “Please be seated. The court is now in session.”
Benítez read out the list of charges in her role as convening authority. Darzi’s lawyer entered the divided pleas: guilty of assault, but not guilty of unlawful imprisonment or attempted manslaughter. Keith kept his eyes on the judge advocate but could feel it every time Darzi stared at him. Red stayed in the back of his mind, ready to spring to his defense.
Benítez and the prosecuting lawyer were prepared. They had copies of every order Darzi had made, from asserting jurisdiction over Iverson to ordering the drugs that had been used. There was written testimony from his conspirators, looking to cut deals for lighter sentences in their own trials.
When Caplan invited the prosecution to bring forward witnesses, Benítez looked toward Keith uncertainly. Allura seized her moment.
“We do have evidence to offer on behalf of our Red Paladin. It is in the form of viewable memories that he recorded in a safe and supportive environment.”
The defense lawyer shot to his feet. “Objection! Inadmissible evidence!”
Allura looked down at him, her eyes wintry. “And how do you know that before you have even seen it?”
Caplan frowned but nodded. “Overruled. However, I do have a question on how we are to know these…memories…are real?”
“We have a demonstration that should be easily verified to your satisfaction.”
“And is there any way that these recordings can be shared in a format accessible to us for the court’s documentation?”
Allura glanced at Pidge, who nodded. She turned back to Caplan. “Yes.”
“Then please, demonstrate.”
“Coran?”
Keith watched, intrigued at the experience of seeing the memory broadcast around the room in such a way that everyone was looking through his eyes. At the same time he was going through the memory in his mind again.
Better keep my eyes shut for the others.
Red purred her agreement.
From his far left, Keith heard Lance mutter something. He picked up the word “showoff” and a hissed reply from Shiro. Whatever Shiro said shut Lance up.
As the memory ended, Iverson laughed aloud. “I will happily verify that this really happened. We can provide Garrison records of it if you insist, General.”
Caplan shook his head. “That won’t be necessary. The news of three first-year cadets breaking the record on their first try in the assessment sim was a big deal. Kogane’s name landed on the short list for possible recruitment to Earthforce’s Air Division because of it.” He turned to Allura. “I am satisfied. Please describe briefly for the court’s records what we will be seeing next.”
Shiro stood up. “The first memory shows what happened when our Red Paladin, Kogane, arrived at the Garrison, as agreed between himself and Commander Iverson. This was the point that Lieutenant General Darzi had commandeered the situation, as described previously in these proceedings.”
Shiro sat and Keith closed his eyes. Pidge reached over and took his hand in hers. He concentrated on the feel of their fingers interlocking. His ears picked up Hunk snarling under his breath, “Bastards!”
He opened his eyes again when Iverson spoke. “I verify that this is what happened.” He sounded a bit shaken.
Caplan admitted the memory into evidence, cross-referencing where it tied in to the prosecution’s records. “May we have the final memory?”
Keith felt his heartbeat rising and Pidge tightened her grip on his hand.
I don’t want to hear this, I can’t hear this…
I have you, my cub. Red began purring in his mind, drowning out all other sounds with her presence.

Lance was fighting to stay still. He wanted to fidget, to let his heel drum on the platform or snap his fingers or something. The tension in the room had been building since the judge advocate had allowed the recorded memories to be shown. Lance assumed it was coming from the defense; Darzi’s eyes burned like coals and he spent long intervals staring at Keith. The defense lawyer kept plucking at his arm to try and get him to stop.
The first memory distracted Lance. He remembered this very well; he had been through the same sim the previous day and chosen the White Sands option, only to crash in attempting an emergency landing because he had used too much fuel in the asteroid belt. At the time he had seethed over the news that some other cadet had not only broken Takashi Shirogane’s record but smashed it by a full ten seconds.
Seeing the actual flight, Lance felt his jealousy of Keith surface for the first time in ages. Keith was focused, in control, communicating effectively with his crew, and obviously streets better as a pilot. Lance had been nervous and would not stop talking to the others, driving the comms officer to actually yell at him. The news that he had been placed in cargo class before the round of qualifying tests had finished had been an especially bitter pill to swallow.
But it was what everyone expected of me at the time…
Still stinging from the conversation with his father, Lance grumbled to himself as they watched Keith navigate the high winds. “Does he have to be such a showoff?”
Next to him, Shiro whispered sharply, “Lance! Stow it!”
Lance spent a few minutes letting his resentment bleed over to Shiro for defending Keith, like always, fueled by the judge advocate’s compliments. Then he saw movement out of the corner of his eye and glanced over.
Keith was sitting ramrod stiff, his eyes shut tight. Pidge was holding his hand and watching him, not even paying attention as the second memory began to play.
What the hell? Why isn’t he watching?
Lance looked up just in time to see memory-Keith pull a tranquilizer dart from his neck. His own heartrate jumped, the second-hand fear from the attack filling the room as they watched. Lance could feel Keith’s fright as he lost control of his body and tumbled forward.
Keith had been completely helpless, about to lose consciousness knowing that he was defenseless. Knowing from Iverson’s words that he was not in a friendly situation.
He glanced over again. Pidge still had Keith’s hand. Hunk looked furious. Allura looked ready to shoot lasers from her eyes and Shiro’s jaw was clenched.
Shiro cut his eyes to Lance without turning his head and he tried to apologize with just a look. Shiro gave him a tiny nod in response and focused forward once more.
“May we have the final memory?”
 <> <> <> <> <>
Hunk was doing everything he could to try and stay calm. Keith was sitting right there, safe on the other side of Pidge. And yet seeing first-hand when he was taken prisoner and now nearly being killed was incredibly stressful. Hunk’s stomach was roiling and his thoughts were buzzing with the need to break some heads.
Yellow’s presence in his thoughts grew. Be calm. The attacker will be punished.
It still stressed him out, watching as Keith fought to breathe, as Darzi’s eyes seemed to descend into madness. It was only when the medtech got his attention and the memory ended that Hunk discovered he had been holding his own breath. He inhaled sharply and Pidge spared him a glance. Hunk huffed and nodded at her that he was all right.
At least until Darzi’s lawyer jumped to his feet.
“I find these ‘memories’ inadmissible! There is nothing here that proves definitively that they are Kogane’s memories. We can’t see anything that identifies the person! And in the second one we can’t see that my client’s hands are fully blocking his air, only that he’s trying to shake him off!”
Several voices erupted at once.
“Excuse me, you can see me in the first one and I know damn well it happened!”
“Of course he couldn’t breathe! Didn’t you feel him try to cry out? He couldn’t because he had no air available!”
“How do we know that wasn’t a hallucination from those drugs they gave him?”
“Order! I want order!”
General Caplan’s shout got everyone’s attention, but Hunk was more worried than ever. Darzi looked way too pleased that people were questioning Keith’s memory. If his lawyer demanded a cross-examination after all…
One of the people in the row of spectator seats stood.
“You want proof this is true? I can do that.”
Everyone turned to him and Iverson frowned. “Perkins? What are you talking about?”
The tall, lanky man looked around the room. He drawled, “If you need another view so you can see that it’s him, I got you covered.” He zeroed in on Coran standing by the console. “Hook me up to this thing.”

Hints
Get The Girl From Players To Go With You
To make the girl come with you pick her up by pressing a and x at the same time. Then just walk back with her. You can throw her at zombies to knock them down too. It barley affects her health.
Good Weapons
There are good weapons in dead rising such as a frying pan if you put it on a stove you can shove it in a zombies face and kill them quick by a burning death it will also grant you 2000 pp points to put the pan on and reward you 100 pp points to shove it in their face.
Defeating Isabella
Before the battle grab a shotgun or a sniper rifle at gun shop shot her in the head until she DIES
Kill Prisoners, No Life Lost
After you receive the gun in case one, go to second floor were the food shop is grab 1 pie and 1 orange juice put both of them in the blender behind the counter when it pops out of the blender it should be red when you drink it you will be untouchable for about a minute so when it comes time to kill the prisoners make sure you have 2 untouchables and at least 2 pistols and there you go.
Take Out Convicts Very Easy
First, go to the paradise plaza and get the mini uzi and some orange juice just in case. Then at 7:00 go to leisure park and watch the cutscene and then get on the pavilion. Try to lure them over to you then shoot the gunner until he dies. Jump off the pavilion and grab the machine gun and fire at the last two convicts until they die. Also there is a survivor you can save named Sophie after you kill the convicts.
How To Really Get Simone (girl In Players) To Go With You
The only way that I found to make her go with you is to go into case mode. The reason for this is because if you don’t do case mode you never meet Isabela and if you do case mode and talk to Simone, Frank mentions Isabela being able to help her.
The Uzi In The Garage
First you go out into leisure park. Then you get to the garage. You take the car and drive through the ticket thing once you get through that you go right. After that you go left into a smaller tunnel. Then you get out of the car and go through a door in a tunnel to the left. (I suggest you bring a weapon). Then you look behind the boxes to the left and there is an uzi there.
How To Make Nectar
First you have to get two bottles of orange juice. Then you have to find a blender and blend them together and you get nectar.
Goods Every Where You Go
When playing you can throw trash cans or card board boxes to get good weapons or food such as pistols, Stun guns, Shower heads, sicles, frozen peas, and squash.
Easy Genasidest Achievement
To get the zombie genacidest achievement first have a new game started. When at entrance plaza with all the survivors then go to the back for the cut scene with Dr. Barnabe. When done just keep fighting the zombies. (Hint, The trash can and 40in tv last for ever. ).
Light In The Dark
When the power goes out in the mall (after 10pm)you can enhance your sight by grabbing a toy light up sword (can be found in paradise, wonderland, and entrance plazas). It emits a red light that in a limited area lets you see better (note: does not work before 10pm).
In Game Cheats
The books found in the game can be used as cheat codes to upgrade weapons, hold onto items longer, perform item tricks, and increase power.
Take No Damage From Falling
When you unlock the knee drop skill you can use this skillto your advantage and drop to the ground taking no damage.
Extra Kick
When you do a ordinary roundhouse you get 10 pp, but if you push down on the movement stick[not click! ] and push x as soon as you land a jump you will do a leg swipe for 30 pp.
Easy Special Forces Guns.
First, start an Overtime Mode game. It is recommended you do to get more achievements. As soon as you leave the hideout, go to The Hunting Shack. Grab a shotgun. Then, head into the maintenance tunnel via park. Go underneath the Food Store. Then, waste the few Zombies there as you enter the hall that leads to the pharmacy. Turn to were you enter the store. Open the door on the left and stand in between the doorway. The S. F . Will see you. They wont shoot instead they try to get in. Waste them. Repeat as desire.

Once your up keep walking across there you should see orange juice, a box, and a teddy bear. Keep going until you find the uzi.
The other uzi is in Al’Fresca Plaza. Go to the fountain and there are a lot of zombies crowding it. Once in the fountain you should find a dumbbell and a Uzi. And there you have it the two uzi’s!

Now, if you want, you can usually makea small lap around the tunnels without the truckbreaking but if you dont feel safe, leave throughthe west side of the map back into the parkinglot. Grab the convertible again and repeat untilyou get your desired kills. I averaged about 1,000kills per trip.

Now, you won’t have to worry about missions and the zombies will never get stronger.
No Cletus In The Huntin’ Shack
After case1 is activated and Jessie gives you the gun, go directly to North Plaza. Once inside go to the Huntin’ Shack, it’s down a narrow hallway. Go inside the shop and hop over the counter to find 3 shotguns and 2 sniper rifles. If you are quick and get there before 2:00pm Cletus won’t be there. When he realods, pickup the display and move forward, and drop it close to the counter. When Cletis realodes again, hop over the counter, grab a shotgun, and jump back behind the store display. Youl be lucky if you finish that last move without being shot. Now, every time he reloads, shoot him with the shotgun. If you beat him, you can always come back to the Huntin’ Shack for guns.
How To Jump Vehicles
To jump vehicles to get the achievments for them, get to the park and get a car or motorcycle. Drive in the lake and drive out at full speed at the highest part of the lake. An easier way to to jump a motorcycle, is after the fight with Isibella on her motorcycle, you can take it and jump around ramps in North Plaza. You can also ride her bike around two other plazas.

You will come to a dea end with a door that is closed at the end. Mowe down the zombies near the door to make it easier to get in. Once in , go all the way back and to the right and it will be right there. If you go to the back and the left ther shoul be an Uzi.
Convicts Machine Gun
Get a nail gun or a pistol and go into the park. Get the attention of the convicts and make them run into a tree. While they are at the tree, get right next to the tree and in front of them. He should back up and try to ram you a couple of times but should not hit you if you are in the right position. The machine gunner will shoot you hardly any so this gives you plenty of time to pop the gunner in the head until he dies. You may then run up and take his gun.

Space Mercenaries AU: Town
It took Engie only a few hours to fix the biggest issues with the van in the garage, allowing the nine of them to head off to the town visible on the horizon. They sort of snuck off without telling Miss Pauling. She hadn’t expressly forbidden them from going anywhere but she also hadn’t said they were free to go wherever they pleased, making the venture questionably allowed at best.
Demo had considered suggesting they ask her first, she was their boss after all, but hadn’t because no one else was mentioning that they probably should. No doubt many of the others had had the same thought and similarly dismissed it for the same or similar reason. They had a right to explore their new environment before starting work for real, right? It was a whole new planet after all, how could they be expected to resist exploring at least a little bit especially where there was an obvious alien town right close by? Unless it was a human settlement, which was possible, this obviously wasn’t the first time humans had come here. Either way they had a right to explore it.
Engie, being the one to fix the car had won the unquestionable right to drive it. Spy was in the passenger seat, he’d taken it while everyone else except for Sniper, Pyro, and Heavy had argued over it, he was an asshole like that. Leaving the rest of them to pile in the back. It was a bit crowded, especially the back row where Heavy sat but they made do. Scout’s chatter made for background noise in place of a radio.
Demo was lucky enough to get a window seat. Through it he saw the town’s sign as they drove by. It looked like it was made of a whiteish stone with black ‘lettering’ – it looked more like scribbles than anything else – on it, probably an alien language. Meaning the town they were headed for was an alien town, exciting news.
Engie drove into the middle of town and parked. There weren’t any parking spots, he just sort of parked off to the side. They all piled out of the car to greet the natives gathering around to investigate – hopefully they weren’t hostile.
“The lizardmen are real, I knew it,” Soldier said – more like shouted – as soon as he out of the van. “Watch out everyone, they can suck out your brains and turn you into one of their slaves.”
“Uh buddy,” Demo said taking Soldier’s arm. “I don’t think you got to worry about them, they ain’t lizardmen, they’re aliens.”
‘Lizardmen’ wasn’t a terrible descriptor for them though. They were scaly and did kind of look like upright lizards. Their faces were too flat though, their large round eyes placed on their heads similar to how a human’s would be, and they lacked tails. Their scales were a bit too shiny and backwards, running up their bodies instead of down. They were various shades of red presumably to blend in with the sand. Said camouflage was ruined by their brightly colour clothing though, there was a lot of pink and purple but there were some bright blues and greens too. All of which combined to make them look pretty ridiculous especially since they were all rather short and stocky.
Before anyone else could say anything or attempt to communicate with them, Pyro jumped forward and started signing to them. His hand motions were slow at first but quickly picked up as he evidently grew more confident with it. Demo couldn’t see super well from where he stood but from what he could see it was clear that Pyro wasn’t using the same sign language he used with the team. Which by itself was odd but what was even odder was that the several of the lizard-alien-men responded, making weird almost chirping noises before one of them stepped forward and started signing back, using six fingered hands.
“What’s he saying to them?” Scout asked. “And like why would they know sign language?”
“Uh… we don’t know what he’s saying,” Engie answered.
“Yeah, I ain’t never seen those signs before,” Demo added.
“So… Pyro knows alien sign language too?” Scout asked.
“Looks like it,” Soldier said. “Tell them if they try to suck any of our brains out or anal probe us we’ll blow up their entire village and plant Earth’s flag here instead.”
Pyro jumped back around to sign at them in the language they all knew. “I told them we come in peace and explained why we’re here. They’re cool with it as long as we leave them out of our war and don’t kill them or maim them. One of them said they’ll eat us if we do. I told them we don’t taste good but I don’t think they care.”
“Where’d you learn to communicate with them?” Spy asked, crossing his arms and glaring at Pyro.
Pyro shrugged. “I met one once, they taught me. But it means I get to be useful now.” He clapped his hands and did a little dance.
“This isn’t fair,” Scout pouted. “He’s moving his hands too fast so even if he’s using signs I know I can’t understand them.”
“Ugh,” Spy complained right back. “Someone translate for him and then let’s explore, it might be important that we know the layout of this town. Unfortunately, we have to stay as a group since only one of us is capable of communicating with the natives right now.”
 -
Despite Spy being the one to mention they needed to stay as a group he vanished almost as soon as they started exploring. Demo might not have noticed if he wasn’t looking out for that exact thing; they’d been on the same team long enough now that Demo knew what was up with him. Whether he was still with them and invisible, had peeled off to explore on his own, or had changed his form to blend in with the small group of locals following them was hard to say though. Nor did it really matter, he was a sneaky bastard no matter which it was.
What did matter though was if this town had a bar. If so, would Demo be able to drink the alcohol these lizard-alien-men drank without dying? Even more importantly, would he be able to get drunk off it? Well, there was only one way to find out.
“Pyro, ask them if they have a bar and alcohol.”
“Now is not the time to get drunk,” Heavy said.
“No, no,” Medic countered, making a calm down gesture towards Heavy. “It’s important to test and I want to know what it does to him. I’ll try to make sure it doesn’t kill him.”
Heavy sighed but seemed to give in. And if anyone else had a complaint they didn’t voice it either. Good that made things easier.
Pyro had been signing to the lizard-alien-man – ‘man’ wasn’t a good word for them, was it? since they weren’t human – who was acting as their guide according to him and now turned to face Demo again, walking backwards without even changing pace. Wonders never seemed to cease with him. “They said they do. They also said if you don’t have money for it you won’t get any even if you are an alien human.”
“Fuck.” It was doubtful they’d take the currency from his home planet which was all he had on him right now. But this just proved that bar and innkeepers were the same everywhere no matter their species, they weren’t willing to give out free drinks just because. An understandable response really but still a pain when one was broke and needed a drink. Hopefully they’d take the universal currency they’d be getting for this job so he could try again once they got their first paycheck which should be soon. Until then he had plenty of alcohol aboard the ship, it should last for a few more months at least.

The town turned out to be rather small and lacking in technology. These lizard-aliens hadn’t even figured out space travel yet on their own yet. The most high-tech thing they had were teleporters, not even high-tech ones. They were like two steps above being cavemen.
As suspected all the buildings were made out of the same milky white stone that had made up the sign they’d passed upon entering town. There wasn’t much ornamentation on them, Demo wasn’t even sure which buildings served as housing and which served other functions. He did ask Pyro to have the bar pointed out to them though. He made a point to remember its exterior when that request was granted, hopefully he’d be able to use that information soon.
While they were exploring, Scout asked all sorts of questions. Pyro translated them to their guide and then replied to Scout, moving his hands significantly slower than usual for Scout’s benefit. From there anything Scout didn’t understand Engie or Heavy translated for him. Finding the slow pace of the conversation frustrating, Demo barely paid attention to it. He spent more time chatting with Soldier about various things.
By the time they returned to the car, the moons were rising and the temperature was rapidly dropping. The lizard-aliens had scuttled off to return to their homes. And Spy had rejoined the group, coming in seemingly when no one else was looking as Demo had just turned his head to look at something and Spy was just sort of there again, sneaky bastard.
