Chapter 10: Rogue meets his girlfriend??!?!

(Authors note: Can't believe this fanfiction is over 10k words. This is weird)

Rogue was incredibly nervous (and blushing), after all, he technically had a girlfriend now, even if a fake one. He was preparing to leave, just as himself because he didn’t want it to end up like finding a girlfriend did. Fresh was on his shoulder, giving Rogue some words of encouragement.

“Don’t worry, rogue-meister. Your old lady will be in the coffin sooner than you can tell Heartfilia about your favourite dragon.”

Rogue needed to keep fresh away from doug at all costs, it was having a serious effect on him. Besides, Rogue was kinda secretly excited for it, he had never been at a girls house unless it was with a bunch of friends, so it was going to be very  exciting. And if they went to her bedroom it would be like exploring a brand new land… he wondered what girls bedrooms were like for the longest time. Were they perfect spaces of happiness and joy? Were they filled to the brim with snakes? Did they store the secrets to the universe? Time would only tell.

Rogue thought it best to pack some things to signify his interests for the eventual circumstance that it came up. So he put a few books on dragons in his backpack, put a plush dragon on top, then put fresh in with them before leaving the house.

Thankfully Lucy didn’t live far for plot reasons, so he didn’t have all that long for his fear to grow. He eventually arrived at the house (5 minutes early) and knocked on the door. He heard a rush of footsteps, and the door opened, Lucy stood there smiling, teeth very shiny and reflective, just like Sting. Her cheeks seemed ever so slightly red.

“Hi Rogue! So glad you could come, almost thought you were going to bail on me hahah, come on in.” Lucy said cheerfully but in a way that sort of unsettled Rogue (He would never show it though). Rogue accepted, heading in. Her house was surprisingly normal, he followed her as she brought him to the living room.

“S- sorry about what happened to Natsu, I’m sure his death devastated-“

“Nah, it’s not that big of a deal.” Lucy responded, interrupting Rogue. It was pretty surprising for Rogue given how often he saw them hanging out together before he died. Perhaps Rogue read that wrong. “Now, we need to pretend to be in a relationship… I wrote up a schedule for what we can do to learn about eachother.” She takes out a clipboard and briefly glances at it. Rogue reaches over to take it and she swiftly pulls it away with a blush, “O- on second thoughts, maybe I’ll keep this to myself. For now we just have to learn about eachother…” The next 20 minutes were spent having the worst small talk you can imagine. Then rogue thought of the best possible question.

“What do you think of the weather-“ his question was interrupted by a bizarre hissing sound “What was that?”

“Oh, it was just my… food! Yes, ovens…” She exclaimed, nervously. Rogue suspected nothing. “M- maybe we could go up to my room now… is that alright?”

Rogue’s cheeks went bright red, what did she have planned up there? Was she gonna propose to him to make the relationship official? Rogue was so excited internally as she brought him up the stairs and opened the door. Lucy’s bedroom was NOT what Rogue was expecting, or rather it sort of was in a way. It was filled to the brim with snake based memorabilia, the wallpaper was snakeprint, the desk was snakeprint, on a hook attached to the door was the snake onesie she wore when they met up at the hospital. Where Rogue had a dragon bed, Lucy had a bed inside a giant snake head. Where Rogue’s bookshelf was filled to the brim with books about dragons, Lucy’s were filled with books about snakes. Lucy blushed nervously, “Welcome to my room… yeah… I like snakes quite a lot.”

“I- I really love dragons… they’re cool…” Rogue said, “M- maybe we could talk about snakes and dragons tog-“

“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGHHHHH” a voice downstairs screamed; Rogue recognised it instantly. Fresh.

Rogue sprinted out of the room and dived down the stairs, landing with a perfect roll. He entered the living room to see Fresh had been taken hostage by a snake, getting coiled up by it. Rogue didn’t care what happened he wouldn’t let fresh die. In a single backflip he leapt over the snake and pulled fresh out of its grasp by the ear, holding him close as he landed. He heard a voice behind him call out, “Down Plue. I’m so sorry Rogue, that’s my pet snake, Plue.” She picked up the snake, talking to it, “The cat is a friend, not food.” The snake let out a sad hiss.

The two went back to the bedroom and sat down on her bed (both blushing as they did so. Neither had shared a bed with someone of the opposite gender, even if they were sharing it as a bench).

“S- so for this part of getting to know eachother I thought it might be necessary to practise p- p- public displays of affection…” she said, not just her cheeks going red but the horizontal middle area of her face, like an anime girl.

“Right, that makes total sense,” Rogue said, he was going crazy inside. He could practise for Sting when they eventually got together, “W- well, should we start then?”

“R- right, rip the bandaid off…” Lucy said, closing her eyes and bringing her hand towards his. Rogue decided to be brave and keep his eyes open. Their hands got close enough and he held her hand. “W- wow, I thought that would be a lot harder… we’re pretty good at this…” Lucy said. Rogue thought the same, though he was mostly just imagining it was sting and not lucy he was holding hands with. “Maybe we could practise romantic walks outside?” Rogue asked, feeling a bit more comfortable around Lucy.

“Y- yeah, good idea…”

It wasn’t long before the two were outside, holding hands and walking down the street. Rogue couldn’t believe he was actually doing this. Was this what confidence like Sting could let you do? He felt stronger because of it. Life was good. They kept walking down the street, taking in the familiar sights, telling each other random facts about snakes and dragons.

“R- Rogue? I- I think I’m ready…” Lucy said, turning to face him, “I’m ready to try hugging…”

Rogue gasped, “S- so soon? I- I guess it’s worth a shot…” he says, surprised at the boldness. He faced her too and stepped towards eachother, wrapping their arms around eachother. Something something, Lucy’s boobs, fanservice, something something.

“Rogue…” A voice said from the side. Rogue’s head whipped around and Lucy pulled away at the sight of… Sting?! Oh God rogue had completely forgot he lived nearby, this was terrible, Sting was going to get the completely wrong idea, he would think they’re in a relationship and all would go to hell. Rogue began to feel dizzy, his head hurt. He stumbled into Lucy who managed to catch him and lead him back to his house. All that went through his mind though, was Sting.

(Authors note 2: I was very tempted to name this one "A song of cat boys and snake girls but decided against spoiling the whole snake obsession twist)

It's true, this blog will see Bleach in absolutely anything. It’s not even willful; everything can and WILL be Bleach. We were watching the first Fast and Furious movie last night, and ended up talking about Bleach (i.e. the sexual renaissance Hisagi experienced on first sight of Lance’s snakeprint pants).

But for the 1970s aerospace corruption schemes, I was thinking about HitsuHina first and the 1970s aerospace corruption schemes came up as a result, rather than me independently reading about 1970s aerospace corruption schemes and applying them to HitsuHina. I feel like the connection here is probably of the “…needed to be there to make sense of this…” variety, but I have also been VIBRATING INTENSELY OUT OF ENTHUSIASM FOR ALL OF THIS since yesterday, so I’ll do my best to explain my thought process!

I’ll begin by saying that I don’t think Hinamori cares about 1970s aerospace corruption schemes, nor do I think she’d be able to come up with a reason why she should, if anyone asked her. As far as she’s concerned, she is going to visit her grandmother in Junrinan to bring news of her having made 5th Division Vice Captain! And she’s taking Hitsugaya with her, which will make this the first time they have gone back to visit together.

But first Hinamori has to do her job, because part of becoming a Vice Captain is waking up at 2AM on your day off to see if you have any messages that say “we were able to handle it, actually, you don’t need to come help!” and not finding any, and so going out to deal with that before your long travel day begins.

Okay, what IS her job, though. Why does her squad need her at 2AM?

And I was like, well, I don’t want her to have to trek out to Rukongai, because that seems logistically complicated. So I decided that in this time period, the 5th has oriented itself toward the Living World! Because Aizen is supervising field studies regarding the nature of souls’ perceptions of the afterlife and how many require konsou vs. not! (Or at least, that’s his interest on paper. He has some ~other personal investments~ as well, carrying over from his presence at the Trauma Field Trip.)

So the thing Hinamori needs to deal with this morning is that a soul was recently ferried from the Living World into Soul Society and, owing to the nature of its death, is FEROCIOUSLY clutching its memories and beliefs. It is not taking its number and filtering obediently into Rukongai like it should, and the last five hours of Hinamori’s poor subordinates’ shift have been failing to convince this soul do just… do that. Now it’s her turn, because she’s the Vice Captain and this is what you do.

What is the soul clinging so hard to, then?

Or, to back up: When do I think Hinamori might’ve become the 5th VC? Byakuya and Ichimaru become captains sometime post-1960s, which leaves Ichimaru’s previous post open for some amount of time. I want this story to be before Isshin’s disappearance, which is some point around 1980. So I was like, okay, let’s say 1970s, then. Again, not that such a date means a whole lot to Hinamori, but it means a lot to me in terms of set dressing.

So I decided, in the Living World, it is 1976, and this soul died trying to visit justice upon another, whom he believed had betrayed their shared ultranationalist beliefs and incited national shame (via 1970s aerospace corruption schemes).

I decided that in Soul Society, there is an additional level of protocols for souls such as these, where their life purpose becomes so entwined with the nature of their death, so as to result in statistically more complications on the afterlife end (and, often, a higher chance of developing spiritual power). These protocols come up even more particularly when a soul’s life purpose specifically taps into identities and ideologies bigger than one person, one soul—where the visions/desires operate at the level of the (ultra)national/societal, and manifest in a death so ideologically fraught that the symbolic weight of it cannot be left behind, even in the afterlife. (This soul became a kamikaze and flew a plane into his betrayer-comrade’s house.)

--This is not something Hinamori yet has conscious awareness of, but to be dedicated to purpose in this way makes for the kind of shinigami the Gotei would like to have, if also the kind of shinigami Aizen has variable respect for.

The only parts of this situation that matter to Hinamori are the parts that help her ease this soul into his afterlife, and convince him to take his ticket and keep walking.

Then she’s on her way to Junrinan, and her weekend in the countryside with her grandmother and Hitsugaya. But the ghosts that follow her, whether she is aware of them are not, are about the ideological commitments of vice-captaincy in the Gotei; the ever-changing nature of human souls as their world changes; A I Z E N, always; and the rapid emergence of one’s identity, either in periods of dramatic economic/cultural growth or in similar periods when one’s professional growth is entangled with one’s spiritual/shikai growth (increases in talent beget promotions beget situations that inspire further evolutions). In my headcanon, Tobiume expresses as a carrion phoenix, aka condor!Tobiume.

Hinamori and Hitsugaya talk about the nature of flight, which it turns out Hitsugaya knows something about, too.

Most of that is dramaturgy, rather than things that I’m expecting to make an explicit appearance in Hinamori’s Pleasant Vacation Weekend, but THAT is how I decided yesterday that 1970s aerospace corruption schemes were “so HitsuHina.” I am very excited about it!!
