To my fellow Smekday / Home fans concerned over one or the other and whether or not you have to choose:

YOU CAN LIKE BOTH.

I can’t believe this has to be said, but the amount of complaining I’ve seen for the movie that not only borders on stuck up and even elitist, but says that you literally can’t like the movie is quite irritating to me, and it’s time somebody says something about this. Before you get on my tail, I’ve read both books. The book and movie have their own unique plotpoints, their own flaws, one with flaws way more prevalent than the other, but you can still appreciate the movie for what it is.

As for the books, I heavily appreciate the lighthearted fun, dark undertones, and the fun story that’s attached to it. I like the designs of the aliens, and I like the stakes and real consequences involved. I love how the post-invasion world is described, how desolate and hopeless it all seems. I love the eerieness of it all, I love the development and worldbuilding of the boov themselves. I love how their history is laid out, I love the koobish, I love the deep, touching characters and their personal journeys, I love how the second book delves deeper into post-invasion Boovish society, I love how we get to explore their architecture, I love how the bees are described, I love how the silliness of the plot doesn’t distract from the seriousness of some aspects and scenes of the book, just all of it.

On the other hand, the movie, whilst different and considerably more flawed, is a personal favorite of mine, and I watched it at least 7x during my Home/Smekday hyperfixation. I do have a gripe with the title and it should have been more specific, and even considering its many flaws in comparison to the book, I love the campy fun of it all, I love the visuals, I love the music, I love the score (If you don’t think Frolicking in Paris is an epic masterpiece, then what kind of monster are you? /t /lh), I love how Dreamworks adapted the story in their own way, I love the design of the Boov, I love the play into shape language, I love how the Gorg were done (even if they should have been a different alien species), I love the underlying tone, I love how Oh redeems himself, I love how the two protags bond, just all of it.

The only piece of Smekday media I don’t fully like is the Adventures With Tip and Oh series, given its numerous flaws and cookie-cutter nature, but even then, it can still considerably stand on its own, and has some fun elements that make it unique in its own right. Hell, they even adapt some concepts from the book in greater capacity in the series, which I personally appreciate for that. BoyBoyGirl Band is a cool concept that something can be done with if elaborated on a bit more, and Sharzod is also pretty neat if you adapt them right.

Plus, pointing out the differences between book and movie whilst reading was really fun too, and looking into both gave me incredible insight into how both versions are done, as well as how they can be done further with a little bit of fanwork. Reading the books and watching the movie gave me a lot of fun and good ideas for an AU later down the line, and I can’t wait to fully get it off the ground beyond a few concepts I did. If you can’t pick one or the other, I think a fun little AU would be the perfect project to look into and use both (or even all 3 / 4) pieces of source material with in a way you see fit!

In conclusion, you can like both. It’s not a big deal, and while you can be mad about the movie and how it admittedly did kinda butcher a lot of the book in a few ways, that doesn’t give you the right to lord over what others can and can’t like, nor does it give you the right to shame others for liking the version that you don’t like. I do not want to have to argue over this, my stance is final.

Honestly almost forgot how much I loved reading books. I love the unfathomable amount of joy they give me. I love the little stifled half squeal half scream of delight that blocks my throat for a few moments when a part of the book makes me particularly laugh or smile at a joke or wholesome moment. And when I have to try my best not to let it escape my mouth so I don't screech out loud seemingly out of nowhere like a little kid at a McDonald's playground playing tag.

Smek - December 1st, 2024

Extremely Disgraced Former Leader Smek - he makes money by working for human businesses now.

This was my first sketch at the beginning of the 2024 year, so I'm glad it turned out well and it took this long to get around to it. Finally getting back to drawing the characters in Home: Adventures with Tip and Oh. I already got Lucy and Sharzod sktched. :)

Well chat, I’ve bought the Smekday books because I want the most out of this hyperfixation. I’ve only seen the movie and some info on the book including a basic summary and a few things such as designs and plot points. I already really like the movie but I want to read the actual books (both of them, yes there’s a sequel) as well. I got them both hardcover, but might need to reorder if one doesn’t arrive. Do you think I’ll enjoy the books, and with my creative spark, I’ll create or incorporate elements of both into an AU?

Home is a comfort movie even though it's like. Never going to hold a candle to the book they're so vastly different. BUT home with Tip amd Oh, the TV show, is, regrettably, very bad. Though it did give me a bitter Smek working at a convenience store. And that I like.

This is my OC based on the 2015 Dreamworks movie ‘Home’, Dr. Maximilian, or Malware Max!

Back in the late 2000’s, Max was one of the Boov’s most brilliant and accomplished scientists, he was the one to find a source of clean, renewable energy in soap. The one downside was that he was just kind of a creepy weirdo with a god complex that every one was pretty scared of, especially smek. Max’s pet project was finding a way to push Boov anatomy to absolute perfection. So, inspired by a VHS tape he found of human ballé dancers (one of the Earth Objects the boov were studying at the time), he created a mech suit for himself to replace his own body, and by “replace” I mean fully replace! He managed to convert his consciousness into digital code as well as stuff most of his internal organs into the suit. When he first debuted his transformation in 2007, Smek was so horrified by it that he ordered Max to be shut down. And that’s how it’s been for 13 years until Oh, Tip, and Kyle were looking through an old storage unit and found the decrepit mech suit and powered it back on, not knowing that a conscious boov was lying dormant inside of it. Once reactivated, Max’s new goal was to get revenge on Smek and kill him as soon as possible and by any means necessary!

All this is for a graphic novel fanfic I’ve been working on all summer called “Home: File Corrupted”! I’ll post the first few pages on here and maybe Webtoon as soon as I can! This is a big project that’s gonna take a long while to fully complete and I hope you all enjoy it!

Sorry, Mr. Bartender. The tall guy at the end of the bar is a few drinks (that he definitely payed for!!!) deep and is making some pretty big googoo eyes.

This job's really not too bad. He's good with his hands, quick, efficient, and he knows how to dial up the charm to maybe get some fat tips at the end of someone's tab. It's definitely in a place more upscale than the joints he would frequent before, took some getting used to, but it worked out.

He's also got one particular red-coated, spikey-haired bastard that keeps showing up during his shifts and trying to get free booze off of him. Brings out those big puppy-dog eyes and everything. Wolfwood let him have a free drink. Once. And then told him he's gotta pay for everything else, but Vash still tried and would always be met with a flick to the forehead or bite to the nose and Wolfwood telling him to pay up.

Vash has been sitting there for a while now and Wolfwood's been considering closing his tab for him, because he's had a lot and he knows how Vash can get when he's drunk. He's watching him out of the corner of his eye while he works, occasionally wandering back over in lulls to flirt with talk to him.

They're just coming off a busy spell and Wolfwood had felt Vash's eyes trained on him the whole night. He turns his head to catch his gaze. It's wide-eyed and adoring and also very clearly ogling him. Maybe Wolfwood did roll his sleeves up and pop open one more button for him. So what if he did?

He slides right over, pulling a rag out of his pocket and using it to wipe up the counter in front of Vash as he leans in close.

"You had too much, Spikey," he says in a crooning voice, his hand coming up to tip Vash's chin up with his finger. His thumb presses to his bottom lip. "I ain't makin' ya anymore or else I'll haveta carry yer sorry ass home on my back."

A big, wet smek is planted on Vash's forehead, and then Wolfwood is drawing back. Moments later, he's sliding Vash a glass of water.

... Vash ends up miraculously getting another drink or three from him, anyway, and Wolfwood does have to carry him home on his back in the end.
