Nepenthe   —   Something   that   can   make   you   forget   grief   or   suffering

Do you feel grief? Sadness? Regret?

Toadie leaned against a tree as he looked over the cliff across the horizon and out to the wide open sea. The sounds of the waves as they crashed onto rocks formed the percussion of the world, and moved with his breath. In and out. A slow rhythm that kept him grounded in this reality. Life’s cadence on the edge of the world. He built a home within the liminal, a place only he could reach. A sanctuary of time that felt like the world stood still just for him.

Birds stirred, but only the last of the evening chorus of vilekin continued to sing. The sun was still yet to peer over the thin veil between sea and sky, and the colors of early morning painted the horizon over the twinkle of the last stars. Here in the bridge between, Toadie remained. Sorrow. Regret. Anguish. Each stirred with a torrent of pain and an undercurrent of rage that tested his resolve. A riptide that carried him out farther than he’d ever have gone willingly, as he tested his strength to continue.

Deep guttural vibrations caught in his throat as he cycled through unresolved emotions tied to deeds he would rather keep silent. Perhaps there would be time to unpack them, but for now he simply opened Pandora’s Box to watch the monsters escape. A music box that cranked to life with a simple lullaby that he could hear in his heart. The words muted and of another language, he let the song fill his lungs before he exhaled his peace.

Chord by chord he let his voice carry in the wind as the birds joined in choir as they fully awoke from their slumber. The world turned as he sang the sun into being, the arch finally breaking the surface as Toadie lifted his heart and offered his sacrifice of grief and regret. Allowed to forget, he left his emotions behind within that liminal existence where time stood still. The world was vibrant with birds fully willing to drown out his song.

Toadie let the final words die in the final gust that pushed past him towards the sea. A weight lifted, as he allowed himself a reprieve. For now he would forget. He would be allowed to smile without guilt. It would not last forever. Though, spells such as these rarely do.
