If you had to be an animal for Halloween, what would it be? I’ve been a black cat once or twice, over the years, so I think I’d choose to be a bat or an owl for a change. My costume for the Bad Faeries Ball in November is actually going to be owl-based.

Do you have acne? No, I’ve got good skin.

You’re glad that you don’t ___. ... have a mouthful of tadpoles. (I can’t think of anything serious, right now, but there are many things I’m glad I don’t, I’m sure.)

Your favorite cuss word? Honestly, I think slang and euphemisms for curse words are more amusing. But I still say fuck quite a bit.

Do you have cable? Who needs cable when there’s the internet.

What’s a show you wish that was still on air? I have a list a mile long. My inner adolescent will always want Gargoyles back, and un-ruined. I’d love a proper wrap-up season for Carnivale. And dear lords, Penny Dreadful! Resurrect Vanessa, for fuck’s sake, and take them off to Egypt for adventures so that she can discover more about herself as an entity far older than her faith. Let her learn to see herself in a broader frame and find some peace and power in her darkness and her light. Give us a running side-arc about what Jekyll/Hyde’s up to as a character in his own right instead of Frankenstien’s glorified assistant. (He had so much potential!) Tell us more about Catriona! Give me back my adorable Professor Lyle. Let Chandler remember he’s not actually the angsty teenager most of his characterization devolved into in the final season! Let him re-connect with Lily. Just... Just there’s SO MUCH that could still be done...!

Do you listen to the radio at all? Honestly no, not much.

Do you like hip hop? It’s like Country. There’s a lot I don’t care for and a bit that I do.

Do you like snow? It’s pretty enough. But then there’s ice on the road and it’s cold, and it gets dingy after the first couple of days.

What’s your favorite thing about your favorite season? Name the season. Fall! It’s cool and the air takes on that smell and the leaves change, and I WILL NEVER BE TOO GROWN UP FOR HALLOWEEN, and I can wear comfy sweaters and my favorite jacket, and my boots. All of my best outfits are fall/spring outfits, and I don’t care if that makes me shallow. :-P

You want your next pet to be what? Enh, my roommates have a puppy, and I think that’s enough pets, for the time being.

Are you a religious person? No, but I’m a spiritual person.

Do you like pina coladas? And getting caught in the rain.

Would you spend 20 dollars on a candle? Maybe once or twice a year.

What is the goriest thing you’ve seen in real life? Not much, unless you count videos/gifs I’ve happened across of people blowing their brains out on camera. Once, I did follow a rather impressive trail of blood up some stairs to discover that my dad had gone and stabbed himself right through the knee while trying to plant a tree....

What is a dessert that you DON’T like? Not a fan of key lime pie.

And one that you love? The tea room I like has this great sticky toffee pudding with hot custard...

Twilight or Harry Potter? Harry Potter, of course, how dare you!

Would you rather be a vampire or a mermaid? I’m going to betray my stars and say vampire.

I see… well… what is your favorite angry music? I used to listen to a lot of metal back in the early 00′s... Tool, Disturbed, Godsmack, Korn, Marilyn Manson, Ozzy, etc... Good, cathartic stuff.

What is something that you like that is really cheap in price? Those $1 packets of powdered instant gravy. Add meat and veggies and spices and dump it over some rice and you’ve got a nice curry dish in a pinch.

What is something that you like that is kind of expensive? Duck. Also, lamb.

What do you do when someone is really rude to you in public? Depends on whether I’m at work or not. If I am, I have to smile and be polite even as I imagine scooping out their eyeballs with a spoon. If I’m not... enh, people are rarely rude to me, outside of work. The last time I can recall, this old Boomer woman tried to demand that I let her in front of me in line at the grocery store. I pretended to think about it a minute, then told her she should say please and continued with my evening while she fumed. It should be noted she did not say please. Do you argue with your significant other a lot? I have no significant other.

Have you ever had a really painful breakup? Of course. Haven’t most people?

Do you write in print or cursive? If I’m at work I usually print. But I like writing in cursive, otherwise.

Do you have neat handwriting? It used to be much neater. I used to get compliments on it, and I dabbled in calligraphy. Now that I’ve taken to writing first drafts by hand instead of tying myself to a keyboard for everything, I expect it’ll get that way again.

Do you keep a journal/diary? Yes, though I should be more faithful about writing in it.

If you HAD to change your eyecolor, what would you change it to? I dunno, green, maybe?

Do you prefer to be pale or tan? Don’t say in between. Pale, I suppose.

Are you a good kisser ( make out )? I’m probably rusty, it’s been quite some time since I made out with anyone. I’ll be honest, though, back when I bothered to try, it was getting harder to find really good kissers than it used to be. People forgot to swallow first, there was no sensuality to it, and half the time they’d try to do that stupid dueling-tongues-with-their-mouth-an-inch-away-from-yours thing. In my experience, these are indications that a person probably watches too much Hentai/Porn and almost certainly won’t be very good in bed. They’ll fuck to please a non-existent camera/observer/their own fantasies, not their partner.

BIRTHDAY: February 3rd, 1229 (February 3rd, 1974 in modern verse) ETHNIC GROUP: Temerian NATIONALITY: Temerian LANGUAGE/S: Common Speech (Polish and English in modern verse). SEXUAL ORIENTATION: Bisexual. ROMANTIC ORIENTATION: Biromantic. RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Verse dependent, though generally Roche is single and often enough engages in one-night stands. Alex Williams Nature’s Beeswax Cornwall

Almost fourteen years ago, Alex Williams moved to Mevagissey to open a B&B. She’s rung the changes since then, trying out a variety of industry sectors including retail (the Candy Shop) and service (laundry) but in her latest venture she’s returned to her roots, and found a perfect outlet for her creative drive.

Alex is an Environmental Scientist and an Aromatherapist. An unusual, if not unique combination. She’s put these twin skills to ideal use in creating her original line, Nature’s Beeswax Cornwall.

The business was born out of two bits of local inspiration. And a lot of hard-work and research. In May 2018 Alex noticed that Mevagissey gift shop Issey was selling pretty soya melts in oyster shells. Her first thought was, “well those should be scallops in Meva!” Her second was, “maybe I’ll have a go”.

She talked to her friend Brian Ball, a local fisherman she knew would be able to supply the shells in suitable numbers for her experiment and set to trying out her idea. Sadly, she came to realise that the problem with scallop shells was the shape; they might be local and environmentally friendly, but they were just too flat and wide for a successful melt/candle to be held. But now she’d got the bit between her teeth! Next step was the second bit of inspiration, and here she had more local help this time from family. Cousin Tom is a beekeeper, and he suggested that maybe what she needed to do was abandon the soft soya wax and go with the real thing!

Alex’s grandmother had taken up pottery at the age of fifty, making a living from the “potting shed” at the bottom of the garden. “I was really proud of my Granny, she’s my biggest inspiration”. Granny had been thorough in her research, trying just about every creative course that was offered at the local college in St Albans, Hertfordshire, where she lived, before finally settling on ceramics.

That thoroughness of research, and determination to find a creative outlet, are characteristics I’m sure she’d recognise in her granddaughter today, and that sense of pride would be entirely mutual. Alex began to research her subject using the more modern channels available now, scouring the Internet, joining forums and watching endless YouTube videos to pick up the necessary skills and learn the techniques. And as she read and watched, she practiced. Starting out melting wax in a bain-marie (double vessel for warming over an indirect heat) she melted and moulded and learnt as she went.

She still uses her first “wax melting jug” to keep productive while waiting on the industrial scale version that’s now installed in her garage. How ever you do it, melting and cleaning wax is a messy business, so she was glad to be able to transfer from her kitchen to garage last October. There’s even a Baby Belling out there to keep things warming nicely, on which she makes all her skin-care products by hand.

As Alex points out, it might be stating the obvious when you’re making candles, but the products are all rather flammable, so she takes a great deal of care to keep production safe as well as achieving that perfect finish.

Using her aromatherapy training to produce luscious body lotion bars, she also employs her environmental expertise to make sure her line is as planet-friendly as possible. Her products use no plastic packaging, her lotions are in reusable tins (refills of the body lotion bars are available) and her wax is bought directly from beekeepers so she knows the provenance at all times. She prioritises her wax stocks as Cornish first, West Country next, and UK as absolute minimum. Everything is locally sourced where possible, including the design work for her brand.

Friend and neighbour Sally Mitchell is one half of the talented Design Room Cornwall team that put together the beautiful branding that makes Alex’s candles standout from the crowd. True to her determination to be plastic-free, the stylishly branded tags / information cards that go with the candles are tied on using ribbons in the distinctive Cornish tartan. “I wanted them to be really Cornish, and the yellow of the tartan works so well with the colour of the natural beeswax”.

It was Alex’s attention to detail, and Design Room Cornwall’s imaginative branding that made the difference when Alex approached The Lost Gardens of Heligan about stocking her line in their on-site shop at the top of the hill, where they now sit amongst big brands and well-established local producers looking perfectly at home.

But Alex’s candles aren’t just available locally, where they’re stocked by Jenny Aves and at Heligan, they can be bought all over the UK and beyond. There are over two dozen outlets already, including Arreton Barns on the Isle of Wight, Country Harvest in Lancashire, and O’Donnell’s pharmacy in Co. Mayo.
