TIOF Chp. 36 - When the Wind Pushes
Come Solace, however—come summer, a year since Corypheus’ defeat—the anchor began to worsen, again.
Thanduwen had known the time would come when the virelena could no longer hold off the inevitable. The damage was not yet too severe, and it was different than it had been in the Basin. Her skin around the mark was not rotting away… but the mark was spreading, the way it had been when she woke in Haven, before she’d sealed the rift at the Temple of Sacred Ashes. It ached, and yawned, the violent green seam in her palm widening.
Thanduwen observed its progress with a cool, detached resolve. The Inquisition, she suspected, would limp on for a while after she passed, but it would not last... and Thanduwen was confident she had done as best she could to bolster her allies in preparation for that end. She had given Briala and the newly formed College of Enchanters as much aid and support as she could manage.
Her only unfinished business was trying to determine what had become of Solas, and what he had planned for the orb.
Late one night, after most of Skyhold had gone to bed, desperation led her to the rotunda. The frescoes had been hidden behind massive tapestries that stretched from floor to ceiling, hiding the painting entirely. Josephine had commissioned the tapestries from an Antivan artist—an elf—and had them installed while Thanduwen was away in the Frostback Basin. Her ambassador knew the sight of the frescoes pained her, stirring up old memories and regrets; Thanduwen counted herself lucky to have such caring and attentive friends.
The new tapestries depicted the legends of the Emerald Knights of the Dales: Elnora worked in her study, reviving lost elvhen magical arts; Andrale sang on the banks of the Enavuris river, her hands sunk deep in her wolf companion’s fur; Tanaleth stood over her white-hot forge. Briathos rode astride a mighty halla, patrolling the borders of the Emerald March, and the city of Halamshiral. There were no Chantry sisters or missionaries depicted in the tapestries, but Thanduwen knew her stories: she knew what he guarded against.
She loved the tapestries dearly, but now, Thanduwen took a ladder to the walls, gently laying the works of art down on clean drop-cloths, using her magic to lower them without damaging them. One by one, panel by panel, she revealed the frescoes beneath. When she had finished her work, she climbed atop the table in the center of the room and sat, legs crossed, her hands clasped around her ankles, soaking in the pattern and color. The pigment seemed brighter than the last time she had looked upon the frescoes, but that must have been a trick of memory.
Her eyes swept across the explosion at the conclave, Redcliffe Castle, Haven, Adamant Fortress, the Winter Palace… the Well of Sorrows. Then she narrowed her eyes, and looked at each again, tilting her head.
She was frustrated. No matter how much time she spent with Dagna, throwing every spell or trick they could think of at the broken orb and the artifact Thanduwen had recovered from Crestwood, they were no closer to finding out what either was truly capable of. She had continued pouring through Solas’ notes to little avail. She did not really think Solas would have been so careless as to leave a hint for her in the frescoes, out in the open, where anyone could see it… but then again, he had called himself ‘pride.’ He might have done just that, thinking that no one would be clever enough to find the clues he’d left.
Thanduwen raised her hand, closed her eyes, reaching out with her perception—but she detected no magic laid in the plaster, no secret that might reveal itself to the right code word or phrase as a lock yields to a key. When that failed, she sighed and draped herself over the table, hanging her head over the edge, looking at the panels upside down. Maybe a change in perspective was what she needed.
‘No matter what happens, whatever else may come—I want you to know that what we had was real.’
Thanduwen sucked in her breath, pushing his parting words out of her mind. She brought a hand to her head, rubbing at her temples. Maybe she was losing focus on what mattered. Maybe all this time she had spent—huddled in Undercroft with Dagna, rifling through Solas’ things, and now, staring at the frescoes—had only been an excuse, a reason to look for him that amounted to more than wistful longing.
Maybe he was not dangerous at all, and she had concocted this whole conspiracy—the orb, the artifacts, even the white wolf—just to give herself an excuse not to let go of him.

Famous Elven Figures in Thedas
[Famous Dwarven Figures in Thedas]
In DA:O’s city elf origin, you have the option to speak with two young elves who tell you they do not know of any elven heroes. Considering the Chantry’s active erasure of elven history, this is not surprising. But there are great elven heroes and notable figures, past and present.
I’ve got a long list of them right here.
Alidda was an elf from Halamshiral who came to be known as the most famous criminal in Orlais. She killed 22 chevaliers in single combat, in retaliation for their graduation ritual of descending into the elven quarters of the city and killing any elves they see.
Ameridan was the last Inquisitor of the first Inquisition, and a famous dragon hunter. The fact that he was an elven mage was hidden by the Chantry, save for the clan of which he came from. The second Inquisition can rectify this.
Andrale was an Emerald Knight who was noted to have a beautiful and inspiring singing voice.
Briala grew up as Empress Celene Valmont’s servant, and eventually also lover. After Celene kills a thousand elves in Halamshiral, and Briala comes to realize it was Celene who had her parents murdered, she uses her acquired master key to the eluvians to help the elves of Orlais, and start a revolution. The Inquisitor’s actions may lead to her being named Marquise of the Dales.
Briathos was an Emerald Knight who guarded the borders of the Dales. He warded off Chantry templars and missionaries. Briathos' Steps in the Exalted Plains is named after him.
Calmar was the first of Elnora, [see below] who likely assisted in her work. He was noted to have a strong connection with halla.
Corimae was an elven assassin who killed a nobleman that refused to take her as a lover.
Elandrin, brother of Siona, was an Emerald Knight who fell in love and planned to run away with a human woman named Adalene. When Siona went to confront her brother, Adalene mistook her as Elandrin and Siona mistook Adalene as attacking, and shot and killed her. Elandrin was then killed by the humans of his lover’s village.
Elnora was an Emerald Knight who spent her time studying and reviving magical arts, lost from Arlathan. The Dalish of today revere her for her work.
Embri was an elven mage from Gwaren. After volunteering to be made tranquil, she became a talented enchanter.
Fiona grew up in an alienage in Orlais, until she was orphaned and bought into slavery. After being sent to the Montsimmard Circle when her magic manifested and she killed the Compte who owned her, she was recruited into the Grey Wardens. However, her encounter with the Arcitect resulted in her losing the taint within her, the only warden in history known to have this happen. She rejoined the Circle and became a strong voice for mage freedom, eventually becoming the current Grand Enchanter of the Circle of Magi, and after calling for and winning the vote for separation from the Chantry, the leader of the mage rebellion.
Garahel, brother of Isseya, was a city elven rogue who died striking the final blow against the archdemon, ending the Fourth Blight. He received posthumous honours rarely given to an elf, and has lived on as an inspiration for many young city elves.
Ilan was an Emerald Knight who fought against and died in the Exalted March of the Dales, side by side with Rin. It’s suggested they played some sort of role in evacuation.
Iloren was a Dalish Keeper from the Anderfels who saved his clan from a hoard of darkspawn during the Second Blight, by laying a trap of flammable material and then summoning lightning to burn them all.
Isseya, sister of Garahel, was an elven mage who joined the Grey Wardens. She and her blood magic played a significant role in ending the Fourth Blight. Isseya also used her magic shortly before her Calling to purify a set of griffon eggs of the taint and hid them away in time suspended magic, to ensure a future generation of them could live.
Katriel was an Orlesian bard sent to seduce and betray Maric in his fight to rid Ferelden of Orlesian occupation. However, she fell in love with Maric instead.
Lindiranae was one of the greatest and most well-known Emerald Knights who fought against the Exalted March of the Dales, and was the last to fall in the final battle. She was the also the last warrior to wield the fabled blade Evanura.
Mathalin was the first Emerald Knight. He was also the first to wield the legendary sword, Evanura.
Nomaris was one of the few Emerald Knights to survive the Exalted March of the Dales. Before jumping into a river, never to be found, he lodged his axe into a tree, saying for it to remain there as a mark of his soul that would never rest, until his people were free.
Orahn was a smith who created weapons for the elves of Andraste and Shartan’s slave rebellion.
Orsino was an elven mage from Ansburg, and First Enchanter of the Kirkwall Circle. He was known as an advocate for mage rights in one of the harshest Circles in Thedas. Fighting this losing battle ultimately led him to use blood magic to transform into a Harvester, one that the Champion of Kirkwall defeats.
Rajmael was a great elven general in the fight against the Exalted March of the Dales. He died leaping over a waterfall rather than submit to the invading humans.
Ralaferin was a notable lord of Halamshiral, of which the present day clan of the same name descends from.
Rin was an Emerald Knight who fought against and died in the Exalted March of the Dales, side by side with Ilan. It’s suggested they played some sort of role in evacuation.
Shartan led the elven slaves in the uprising with Andraste against the Tevinter Imperium. Shartan and most of his elves died attempting to save Andraste from the fire that killed her. Because of him, the Chantry named that the Dales would be a new homeland for the elves... Until of course they took it back. Divine Renata I had the Canticle of Shartan erased from the Chant of Light, and had all Chantry artwork that included elves destroyed. There is a single painting of Shartan that remains in the University of Orlais, with his ears docked to look human. If Leliana is made Divine, she returns the Canticle to the official Chant. Until then, most common folks debate his very existence.
Siona, sister of Elandrin, was an Emerald Knight. She feared Elandrin’s love for a human woman named Adalene, after the humans had killed her sister for walking too close to the border. When Siona went to confront her brother, Adalene mistook her as Elandrin and Siona mistook Adalene as attacking, and shot and killed her. Siona later went on to fight against and was killed in the Exalted March of the Dales.
Soran was an Emerald Knight archer.
Sulan was an Emerald Knight, and young squire to Mathalin. When he saved Mathalin in battle, he passed the sword Evanura onto Sulan.
Talim was an Emerald Knight who died using his body to shield a child from an onslaught of arrows.
Tanaleth was the High Keeper of June, from Halamshiral. A renowned smith, she forged many weapons for the Fade Hunters; a division of Emerald Knights who protected the Dales from maleficarum and demons. She also spent many years rediscovering art history of Arlathan.
Telana was a powerful dreamer mage, lover and companion to Ameridan. The Chantry erased her existence, causing great debate among scholars over if she was real or not. The second Inquisition can rectify this.
Vaharel was the Emerald Knight who led the invasion and brief capturing of Montsimmard.
Victor Boyet was an actor in Orlesian theatre, a city elf born in Val Royeaux. He began his career with only small roles for five years, until he managed to convince the writer of The Heir of Verchiel that he was fit to play the role of the Duke. His performance was well received.
Wenna di Ladia was an infamous elf from Nevarra who fought during the Third Blight. She was a descendant of the Emerald Knights who died fighting in the last stand against the humans in the Exalted March of the Dales. When alienage elves were inspired by her and started uprising, the rulers of the Free Marches named her a criminal, and she had to flee. Her legend still lives on for city elves.
