For a change of pace, I've learned quite a bit about Judaism since last year. There are things it does have in common with the religion I grew up in: Sikhism. Off the top of my head:
Prohibition of forced conversion and proselytizing.
Tikkun olam is similar to the Sikh concept of seva, which is doing good for the community.
Headwear: I know more observant Jews wear kippahs. The more religious Sikhs (these are called Amritdari Sikhs) wear turbans and carry kirpans with them, as well as wearing a silver bracelet. That represents battle as the meaning of life and it's referred to as kara. Both men and women do it, though it's more common for men to wear the turbans. Non-turbaned Sikhs are sahajdari Sikhs.
Sikhism actually does have its own separation movement in India. It's referred to as the Khalistan movement. A hypothetical Khalistan would exist where the Indian state of Punjab currently is. The thing here is that the majority of Sikhs do not support an independent Khalistan, though it does seem to be on the rise following the murder of a Sikh separatist in Canada. There was a period where there was high support for Khalistan in the 1980s following Operation Blue Star. The history is kind of messy, but the point here is that a separation movement for a Sikh state does exist.
Naming conventions for men and women. Men have Singh (lion) as their religious surname. For women, it's Kaur (princess). They're also used as a middle name. From what I've seen, the more religious Sikhs use Singh or Kaur as a surname, although I've seen sahajdari Sikhs do the same.
Dear ara-line,
I didn't know you were raised Sikh!
yep that's common for many religions
Again very common for a religion but yep!
Kirpans are the ceremonial knives yes? My dad said those are a pain at the TSA (to be fair being percieved as muslim is a pain at the TSA in general)
Was not aware of that but I mean if Sikhs saw India and Pakistan being partitioned and and of few of them would want their own partition and also that a movement like that fell apart
you know I'm not sure if I'd say that comparable to the "ben" and "bat" system that sounds way more elaborate that "Ben son of Ben"
Yours,
Cecil

Brianna Sukhmani Kaur (or as she prefers to be called, Bri) is a veteran, mother, soon to me MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist), and overall lovely personality who has been practicing Sikhi since 2018.  I have personally found her insight into certain subjects to be refreshing, and I feel like we need more people like her in the Panth. The following is an interview that I conducted with her, and I hope that by doing it, our horizons will be broadened and we will all be inspired to tell our own unique stories.  - Gurpreet Kaur
For those who don’t know who you are, would you kindly introduce yourself?
As Gurpreet stated, my name is Brianna Sukhmani Kaur. I was born and raised in Los Angeles California. I am a second-generation Californian with roots in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and New Bern, North Carolina. I served in the United States Army for over 4 years, and had the opportunity to travel across the country and meet some of the most dedicated and motivated individuals that I was proud to call comrades and serve alongside. I’ve majored in Human Resourcing, Radiologic Technology and am currently pursuing a career as a Medical Laboratory Scientist. I enjoy volunteering my time and resources to the men, women, and children of South-Central LA, as well as helping the homeless population in Downtown LA’s Skid Row sector. In my spare time, I love listening to Spoken Word, which is a form of poetry that provokes a reaction from the audience - much like theater.
I have a six-year-old son named Tyler, and I’ve made it a point to introduce him to different cultures, languages, subjects, etc. – to not only help him find his interests, but to also shape and mold him into a well-rounded, and open-minded young man. I want to leave you with this quote, by the late great Malcolm X, “I’m for truth, no matter who tells it. I’m for justice, no matter who it is for or against. I’m a human being, first and foremost, and as such I’m for whoever and whatever benefits humanity as a whole”.
How did you become connected to Sikhi?
Most people are surprised when I tell them how I discovered Sikhi, because it isn’t a typical response like, “I’m dating a Sikh” or “I learned about it while taking a world religions course in high school or college”. I was on Netflix watching Bollywood films, and the film entitled “Eh Janam Tumhare Lekhe” caught my eye. For those of you who are unaware, it is the story of Bhai Bhagat Puran Singh, who is the founder of the All India “Pingalwara” Charitable Society in Amritsar, Punjab (a safe haven for the “castaways” of Indian society, such as the sick, disabled, and forlorn).
After watching the film, I was so intrigued by this man, that I did further research on his life and what inspired him to become a Sikh (as someone coming from a Hindu background). Initially, I didn’t have the slightest clue what a Sikh was, so I took it upon myself to learn more. I was in for a huge surprise! Little did I know, I was on the verge of introducing myself to my new identity, an identity I yearned for but didn’t know existed.
At this time I was in college and my now dear friend Gaganpreet joined my class. I saw she was wearing a kara, so I approached her and introduced myself. I then proceeded to ask, “Are you Sikh?”. She was so surprised and responded, “Yes, how do you know?”. I then told her I was interested in the religion and wanted to learn more. She invited me to attend the Lankershim Gurdwara (Sikh Gurdwara of Los Angeles) with her; we literally went every Friday after class. If it wasn’t for her guiding me, and introducing me to other members, I honestly do not know how my initial experience at a Gurdwara would have turned out.
What parts of Sikhi deeply resonate with you?
In learning the teachings and values of Sikhi, two specific core values resonate with me more than others. The first being “equality”. Regardless of your economic status, gender, caste, religion, or race, we are all seen as one. It might seem basic, but you have to consider the time in which Sikhi was created. It was during an era in which the Mughals (Muslims who ruled over a large Hindu majority heavily influenced by casteism) dominated much of Indian society. So for Guru Nanak to rebel without fear, without hate (nirbhau, nirvair) against the status quo, was the dawn of a new day. The second was, “fighting against injustice” for all, with complete disregard to the differences (religiously and culturally) we have. This is clearly demonstrated throughout Sikh history.
A great example of this is the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur - who sacrificed his life for a basic human right (freedom of religion). He could have easily done nothing, because he wasn’t protecting the rights of his own people (Sikhs). Instead, he protected the rights of the Kashmiri (who were being threatened with conversion to Islam, under the threat of death by the Muslim emperor, Aurangzeb). The Gurus led by example. So, if you’re ever wondering, “How can I fight against injustice?”, you don’t necessarily have to sacrifice your life. What you should definitely do is stand up for the rights of others (specifically marginalized groups) or simply ask yourself, “What would the Gurus do?”.
You are a mother to a 6 year old African American boy in the United States. And with that can come its own challenges. But how do you feel about raising your son Tyler within the Sikh community?
Raising a six-year-old African American male in the Sikh community definitely comes with its challenges. My son and I are Black, and we are also Sikh. This literally means not compromising any side of ourselves for the other. The issues in the Black Community deserve to be at the forefront, and the issues in the Sikh Community deserve to be at the forefront. So, I’m constantly making it a point to teach him the importance of Black History, and how to maneuver in this world as a young black male; while also incorporating the teachings and history of Sikhi, which can be tricky, because children take things at face value.
At this point in time, Tyler still has all of his childhood innocence, so there are things he does not pick up on. I do. So, I am almost glad that he doesn’t recognize racism/discrimination for what it is quite yet. He realizes if a boy or girl doesn’t want to play with him, but he doesn’t understand WHY. He doesn’t understand the history behind the stares or the looks of disgust, and he doesn’t understand why when he speaks, he’s ignored. He doesn’t understand why they’re making fun of the texture of his hair – all he wants to do is play. I am not looking forward to the day he does recognize it; can you imagine your child coming to you and telling you, “Mom doesn’t Sikhi teach equality?”. And you respond saying, “Of course it does.” And he/she then says, “Well, why did he/she call me a bad (derogatory) name”, or “Why won’t they play with me?”, or “Why are they asking me why I’m at the Gurdwara – as if I’m not a Sikh and as if I’m not welcomed here? I thought all were accepted at the Gurdwara. So why are they pointing at me and laughing?”, or “Why did he/she hit me; aren’t they Sikh?”. This is not to say such instances haven’t happened, but this is to say he has yet to understand why.
Luckily for Tyler, he has a strong Black woman as a mother who has zero tolerance for such acts and will address them without hesitation; but this does not make such occurrences less traumatic. The “idea” of Sikhi is mesmerizing, and with time, Tyler will comprehend that. But realistically, not all Sikhs act in accordance to their faith, and eventually, he will also comprehend that as well. As a parent, especially a mother to a black male, you naturally want to protect your child from the world, but you can’t. So, I not only have to teach Tyler how to survive in a world and deal with a system that is against his very existence. But I also have to teach him to trust his instincts and resist the urge to abandon his integrity for the sake of temporary gain. Ultimately, I have to trust my parenting.
How does it feel now to be an activist within the Sikh community, and what do you want to see come about as a result of the creation of BSI?
In the words of Alice Walker, “Activism is the rent I pay for living on this planet”. Especially as a Sikh, it is our moral obligation to fight against any form of injustice even if it’s within our own community). With that being said, BSI (the Black Sikh Initiative) was created to empower black voices within the Sikh community as well as educate and motivate allies on how they can “actively” create change within the Sikh community and outside of it. We aim to create awareness that systemic racism goes beyond police brutality, while also addressing and countering anti-blackness within the Sikh community.
As a result, I would
1) like to see the excuses for anti-blackness within families to STOP – instead, we should have those uncomfortable conversations, explore the roots of anti-blackness within your family, and then properly educate your loved ones.
 2) I would like to see the same energy Sikhs have for guests they invite to their homes maintained for marginalized groups within the Sikh community (both inside and outside of the Gurdwara).
And 3) I would like to see Sikhs stop being complicit and get “actively” involved. If you’re an artist, use your art. If you’re an elected official, use your platform. And if you don’t feel you’re in a position to cause change, you’re wrong – vote, attend a protest, make a monetary donation to Black organizations fighting against injustice, or openly call people out. Anti-blackness did not start overnight and I do not expect it to change overnight. But if you consider yourself to be a Sikh, I not only expect for you to fight against discrimination, but see it as your moral duty to fight against injustice.

How to take care of our 5 Kakaars?
Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh,
Our Kakaars become a part of our lives after we get baptised. We never remove or part with them till our last breath.
Infact, when a singh or a kaur passes away, the kakaars are not removed from the body but are cremated along with it. This is the connection we share with the kakaars given to us by Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji Maharaj.
It’s been many years since I was given the daat of Amrit and I’ve learnt many valuable and important lessons over the years.
I’ll be sharing some of the lessons in this post today, on how to care and look after our kakaars.
1. Kanga (Wooden Comb)
It happened with me a lot, that whenever my Kanga dropped on the ground, it just got broke almost every time. Therefore, I had to keep at least two extra new kanga’s in my closet, as if I break one, I can change it.
So one day, a singh advised me to keep my kanga dipped in mustard oil for 3-4 weeks before using it. I tried it and it worked like magic.. I never broke a kanga in my life again...it’s been almost 3 years I’m using the same kanga..It has fallen many many times but never broke from anywhere as I’d kept it dipped for almost a month before I began to use it...It’s still intact and I love it..
You can wash your kanga when you wash your kesh..
Another useful tip, if you keep a thread tied to your kanga, you can roll the thread around your bun (joorah) before tying your dastaar. and the kanga won’t come off when you untie your dastaar.
2. Kara (Iron Bracelet)
Every summer, my kara would leave round marks of rust around my arm and spoil my shirts, esp the cuffs. I spoiled almost every shirt because of this but because I loved my kara more than the shirts, I never bothered to find a remedy to it..It continued for almost 2 years/summers.
I had friends who had got their sarab loh kara’s chromed, a coating that gives a shiny and bright silvery look to a metal & prevent it from rust..I preferred to stick to the original sarab loh that the Guru Sahib had given us.
I never got it chromed/buffed.
I rather figured out a way later to keep my Kara rust-free using an abrasive pad, Scoth brite (use it dry) and it worked well..I did it weekly or fortnightly throughout summers and just loved it. As I cleaned it, it made me love this beautiful kakaar even more and embrace it.
3. Kachera (underpants)
Kachera(s) are generally sold as a ready made garment at Samagam stalls and at some permanent shops. Like many other people who wear Kachera, I bought it from same stalls/shops for the first one and a half year after getting baptised..
I later figured there was something wrong. The draw string (naarah) pained daily, the fabric quality wasn’t up to the mark and the kacheras came in a fixed length..
In order to wear a baana (which I was just learning about back in 2012), the kachera length had to be longer..So I got my first kachera stitched in order to wear it under baana and later changed all my other regular kacheras to tailor made..
Transitioning to tailor made kacheras not only allowed me to choose the finest fabric (cotton), but let me have kacheras of varying lengths, which I could comfortably wear, under my trouser, denim, or baana. and the best part, it had super comfortable cotton drawstrings.
4. Kirpan (Sword)
Kirpan is a weapon given to us by Guru Sahib, and it is to be used for our own and someone else’s protection.
If I call it an article of faith, I would probably not mind carrying a one inch Kirpan instead.. and in my opinion, carrying a miniature kirpan would nullify the purpose of being a shashtardhari (armed soldier).
It’s my Kakaar and it has to be big enough to be usable...Loud n Clear..
With guru sahib’s kirpa, I got to wear many kirpans, a 9 inch taksali among one (it was my dream to have a taksali, I got it in 2013 which later got gifted). It was only when I started cleaning my kara, I thought to do sewa of my kirpan too.
I cleaned it using the same abrasive pad I used for my kara. It worked fine..I later switched to a smaller 6 inch kirpan, made of a rustless Spanish Muela blade and it never demanded any sewa.
However, I do wash my gatra, weekly, as it’s really important as part of personal hygiene..
5. Kesh (Unshorn Body Hair)
We all ask for Kesh daan in our ardaas everyday..It’s a part of us.. It’s our identity, responsibility, one of the kakaars, our faith and our acceptance to follow Guru’s hukam.
Some caring tips for Head Kesh:-
Keep your Kesh clean by washing it weekly or as suitable
Oil them at least once a week..It’s necessary
Comb them twice a day
Wear a tidy dastaar. It’s good to change your dastaar twice a week
Keep your head covered at all times.
Drinking more milk, almonds, black chickpeas might prevent it from pre mature greying
Caring tips for beard Kesh:-
Keep your beard oiled. I prefer almond oil. It’s nourishing and not smelly at all
Wash it with a soap or shampoo, daily or as it suits
Use a conditioner to keep it soft (Same applies for head kesh)
Use a brush to straighten it after applying oil
I don’t tie my beard so no idea about hair fixer or sprays.
A note: I agn bhent (burn) the fallen kesh. Tbh, It’s not something I’ve always done but I learnt over time that’s it’s important I respect my kesh so I started doing agn bhent..
Also, I carry a small box to store my fallen kesh whenever I travel..It helps in keeping my fallen kesh respectfully and bring it back home..
Thanks very much for reading..You are welcome to share your valuable feedback and lessons.

Shaheedi Profiles ft. Women: Bibi Harsharan Kaur - The last Shaheed of the Battle of Chamkaur
After the 72 hour long Battle of Chamkaur against a Mughal army of 10 lakh (1 million), which resulted in the Shaheedi of 36 of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji Maharaj’s Singhs, as well as the Shaheedi of the elder Sahibzade - Baba Ajit Singh Ji and Baba Jujhar Singh Ji, a strong barrier was placed around the Fort of Chamkaur. As the soldiers went from village to village, making their announcements, the people of the villages were in terror and ran back to their homes to take shelter.
However, this wasn’t the story of every household. In a village called Khroond, a 16 year old fearless daughter of Dhan Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji Maharaj, named Bibi Harsharan Kaur, asked her mother if she could perform the final rites for the Shaheeds of the Battle of Chamkaur. Her elderly mother replied back saying “it is total darkness outside and the soldiers are everywhere around the fort. How will you even go near?” Upon hearing this, Kalgidhar Dasmesh Pita Ji’s lioness responded by saying “I will avoid the soldiers and perform the cremation, and if need be, I’ll fight and die.”
Instead of stopping Bibi Harsharan Kaur, her mother encouraged her and hugged her tight. She went on to explaining the Maryada that Bibi Ji needed to follow for the cremation. Bibi Harsharan Kaur did Ardaas to Akaal Purakh Vaheguroo Ji and left for the Fort of Chamkaur.
The battlefield which previously saw iron striking against iron, hooves trotting and soldiers yelling “Kill! Capture!”, had now fallen silent and was engulfed by darkness. The young Bibi Harsharan Kaur moved along smartly, avoided the guards and finally reached the Fort.
Upon arriving at the Fort, Bibi Ji saw dead bodies lying everywhere and identifying the bodies of Sikhs seemed very difficult. However, she kept her faith in Maharaj and searched for wrists with karas around them, torsos with kacheras and heads with long kesh. She wiped the face of every Shaheed as she found their bodies. With her great determination, Bibi Ji found the bodies of Baba Ajit Singh Ji and Baba Jujhar Singh Ji, along with approximately 30 other Shaheeds. Being cautious of the of the approaching day light, Bibi Harsharan Kaur collected wood and worked rapidly to prepare a pyre, and then lit the fire.
The rising flames shocked the guards and caught their attention. They ran towards the pyre and saw Bibi Harsharan Kaur sitting next to the pyre. Sitting there, Bibi Ji recited Kirtan Sohila Sahib. The guards stood there, shocked and confused about how a sole woman managed to enter the fort on such a dark night. The guards then had the following conversation with Bibi Harsharan Kaur:
Guard: “Who are you?”
Bibi Ji: “I am the daughter of Guru Gobind Singh.”
Guard: “What are you doing here?”
Bibi Ji: “I am cremating my martyred brothers.”
Guard: “Don’t you know about the order that coming here is a crime?”
Bibi Ji: “I know it.”
Guard: “Then why have you disobeyed that order?”
Bibi Ji: “The orders of a false king do not stand before the orders of the Sachepatshah (True King)”
Guard: “Meaning?”
Bibi Ji: “Meaning that I have respect for the Singhs in my heart and with the Guru’s grace I have done my duty. I don’t care about your King’s orders.”
Upon hearing such fierce answers, the Mughals were infuriated and attempted to capture and attack her. However, being the true daughter of Dhan Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji Maharaj, Bibi Harsharan Kaur grabbed her kirpan and fought back with determination. After killing and injuring many soldiers, she fell to the ground due to the injuries she obtained. The soldiers then burned Bibi Harsharan Kaur alive, by throwing her into the pyre. Bibi Ji became Shaheed while serving her Shaheed brothers.
The following day, story of Bibi Harsharan Kaur’s seva reached Guru Gobind Singh Ji in Talvandi Sabo (Damdama Sahib) and her elderly mother. Upon learning about her daughter’s unparalleled bravery and Shaheedi, Mata Ji thanked Akaal Purakh and said “my daughter has proven herself worthy.”
Till date, the incomparable seva and and Shaheedi of Bibi Harsharan Kaur continues being an inspiration to many young Singhs and Singhnia. May Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji Maharaj also bless us with the faith, determination and love Bibi Harsharan Kaur had for HER Panth - OUR Panth - the SIKH Panth.
Dhan Guru, Dhan Guru Pyaare!

However, our kara will be near to perfection as we get these manufactured on demand and use bubble wraps to transport these.  Please read below more Information about Sikh Kara:  A kara (Punjabi: ਕੜਾ (Gurmukhi), کڑا (Shahmukhi) कड़ा (Devanagari)), is a steel or iron (sarb loh) bracelet, worn by all initiated Sikhs. It is one of the five kakars or 5Ks — external articles of faith — that identify a Sikh as dedicated to their religious order. The kara was instituted by the tenth Sikh guru Gobind Singh at the Baisakhi Amrit Sanskar in 1699. Guru Gobind Singh Ji explained:  He does not recognise anyone else except me, not even the bestowal of charities, performance of merciful acts, austerities and restraint on pilgrim-stations; the perfect light of the Lord illuminates his heart, then consider him as the immaculate Khalsa.  The kara is to constantly remind the Sikh disciple to do God's work, a constant reminder of the Sikh's mission on this earth and that he or she must carry out righteous and true deeds and actions, keeping with the advice given by the Guru. The Kara is a symbol of unbreakable attachment and commitment to God. It is in the shape of a circle which has no beginning and no end, like the eternal nature of God. It is also a symbol of the Sikh brotherhood. As the Sikhs' holy text the Guru Granth Sahib says "In the tenth month, you were made into a human being, O my merchant friend, and you were given your allotted time to perform good deeds." Similarly, Bhagat Kabir reminds the Sikh to always keep one's consciousness with God: "With your hands and feet, do all your work, but let your consciousness remain with the Immaculate Lord." The basic kara is a simple unadorned steel bracelet, but other forms exist. It was historically used like a knuckle-dusterfor hand-to-hand combat. Battlefield variations include kara with spikes or sharp edges. Sikh soldiers of the British Indian army would settle disputes by competing in a form of boxing known as loh-musti (lit. iron fist) with a kara on one hand.  PLEASE NOTE: Please measure/check size of your kara/bracelet first while ordering to avoid any hassle or posting it back to us and paying extra for p&p for exchange and swap of karas with other desired sizes.  There will be charge of £5 p&p towards exchange/swap of Kara for any size issues for UK buyers and £12 p&p for international buyers that needs to be paid by PayPal in advance or interested buyer can send us pa repaid self addressed envelope for any exchange/swap along with the original item in its original packaging and buyer should also return us the gift item/bags sent along with the item for appreciation of purchase. Some Karas may have negligible small black grinding mark on the kara joint. This is always seen on all karas as most of the Kara making/shaping work is done by hands. However, this do not affect the quality/look of Kara. #Kara #KaraforLife #SikhKara #SarblohKara #Sarbloh #5Ks #SinghKara #SikhBracelet #KhalsaKada #Kada #SinghisKing Brilliant finish and very decorative.
