LISTEN CAREFULLY - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Haida Street Films and RBG Films

SYNOPSIS: Andy McNeary, recently promoted to assistant bank manager, is also a new father. His overbearing and abusive boss leaves him in charge with a warning, and that night his wife goes out for the evening, leaving their baby daughter in Andy's care. Andy dozes off briefly and hears noises over the baby monitor. He discovers his daughter is missing and a mysterious voice on the monitor tells him he must follow instructions to save her and his life.
REVIEW: Ryan Barton-Grimley's film captures a parent's worst nightmare, crafting a story of a submissive anti-hero forced to overcome terrifying obstacles to save his daughter. The filmmaker enhances the suspense with an unsettling atmosphere and additional character flaws.
Ryan Barton-Grimley's film presents the captivating story of Andy, a flawed character who evokes sympathy and dark humor as he embarks on a quest to retrieve his abducted daughter. Guided by a baby monitor that practically takes on a personality of its own, Andy encounters a series of peculiar characters while being stalked by a group of baby masked predators. As Andy's stress escalates, the narrative becomes increasingly fractured, blurring the lines between reality and Andy's unraveling mind. The film's surreal tone, reminiscent of Scorsese's "After Hours," creates an emotionally nerve-racking experience, particularly for those with children.
Ryan Barton-Grimley skillfully utilizes the tools and techniques of filmmaking to create a captivating and suspenseful independent film. The film's energy and engagement are maintained through clever cutting, framing, and lighting, with much of the film taking place in Andy's car at night. The diverse color spectrum effectively portrays the contrast between Andy's reality and his hallucinations, further enhancing the visual experience. Jack Bradley's score complements the film's visuals, with movements that reflect Andy's mindset and hypnotic movements that accentuate the surreal, nightmare-like moments.
LISTEN CAREFULLY boasts a memorable ensemble cast, including Richard Gayler as the janitor whose expressive face adds to the film's bizarre feel. Ryan Barton-Grimley delivers a compelling, multi-layered performance as the central character, Andy, connecting with the audience and taking them on a journey. Each character Andy encounters offers a unique perspective, further enhancing the viewing experience.
LISTEN CAREFULLY, an independent film, is a compelling psychological horror film with a complex character study, dark comedic elements, surreal aspects and terrifying consequences. Writer, director and actor Ryan Barton-Grimley excels in creating a haunting narrative about a new parent caught in a self-made nightmare. I am eager to see what Grimley serves up next.
