Brian and his son on Star Fleet Day 7/17/23
I watched the livestream of the little event Brian had with a crowd at Abbey Road Studios, and it turns out his son was there. Brian pointed him out in the audience when he was first talking about being inspired to play the theme song of the show:
"Jimmy, he was 5 at that time, he was a small boy called Jimmy May at that time. He is now a large man called James May, and he's here. So I just want---I'm very proud of you, James. And, um, this is all your fault, basically."
He was wearing a Brian May Guitars shirt :')
Later in the video, Brian said he still loves Star Fleet and:
Brian: James May, do you still love that series? Jimmy: Yeah! Brian: Yeah.
Then Simon Lupton, the interviewer, asked:
Lupton: You said it was James' idea to begin with. When you played it back to him, did he like it? [*they look out to the crowd to Jimmy*] He says thumbs-up. Brian: He always says thumbs-up with me. Are you sure?
And finally, Brian gave this funny little tidbit:
"I sang ["We Will Rock You"] really, really badly at my son's wedding. I don't want you to hear that, ever."

Brian talking about Freddie showing him the scab on his foot caused by the x-ray treatment of his Kaposiâs sarcoma a bit more in detail
Look how he immediately lights up reminiscing about Freddieâs bigger-than-life âsuperheroâ persona on stage, then looking more solemn and nostalgic thinking about Freddieâs last days on Earth đą

Freddie Mercury - 1946 ~ ForeverFrom book 'Freddie Mercury: His Life in His Own Words', by Greg Brooks and Simon Lupton with foreword by Freddie Mercury's mother"This book is about to my boy, Farrokh Bulsara. Of course, he became better known to the world as Freddie Mercury. But through everything he never stopped being a loving and affectionate son and family member. I miss him hugely, but thanks to his music he is never far away from me. The talent and intelligence of this unique man -Â
and much loved son - will ensure his memory lives on for generations to come. So I do hope you enjoy reading his own words, for they illuminate the wonderful man he was. đŁ I have info on the mixtape Freddie made!! đŁ (i know nothing about Soul Brother though)
According to Simon Lupton (the documentary maker / Queen historian / Queen's videographer) the mixtape was something Freddie did for Brian to comfort and reassure him (and to cheer him up in general) when they were recording Sheer Heart Attack!
With Brian being in and out of hospital and needing to be on bed rest a lot of the time, he apparently started to get anxious that they were just going to drop him and find another guitarist (đâ„ïž)
So the others all visited him frequently to keep him abreast of how the album was progressing, play him bits of songs, ask his opinion etc.
For example, they brought him a demo of Killer Queen and, because Brian wasn't 100% happy with the style of the backing vocals, they re-recorded them with him later on (which wasn't necessarily a very easy/quick task because of the recording methods they used at the time).
But yeah, they really took pains to make sure Brian felt appreciated, arguably none more so than Freddie â he edited together a supercut of guitar solos from their songs so Brian could listen to them whilst on bed-rest, and know that he was loved (đâ„ïž)
...
(đâ„ïžđâ„ïž)
...
(đđđâ„ïžâ„ïžâ„ïž)
Anyway, you too can hear Lupton talking more about this period on Queenpod! đ€ You want from 30m12s onwards in this episode for the bits I mention above. (But there's lots of other info sprinkled throughout and in the subsequent episodes) (Also Simon is really good at fact checking, making sure there are enough sources to verify what he says and also flagging up times when we can't be sure of a story's accuracy)
And just another cheeky detail before I get off your post: Brian had to restrict his movements after his operation due to the pain it caused, so apparently Freddie, Roger and John of course took the opportunity to make Brian laugh as much as possible, knowing he was meant to be staying still
...because who doesn't love a bit of humour-induced torture? đŹđ€Ł
Didnât Freddie and Brian once get into a fight then the next day Freddie made a mixtape of all of Brianâs guitar solos as a sorry? And he also wrote soul brother for him too I think? I mean this was all told by Brian himself so it could just be him lying but I donât think he would lie about that stuff. I think they really did all have that brotherly bond
He definitely made him a mixtape... I don't recall if it was an apology or just a random gift from Freddie. Anyway, it's lovely!
No, I don't think he'd comepletely make-up stories or anything. When I said I don't believe Roger, I was referring more to them perhaps glossing over some stuff. You know, rounding rare or not very serious fights down to "never a cross word", that sort of thing.
And I didn't mean to imply the others couldn't be brotherly. (I mean, it's interesting none of them had actual (big) brothers, all of them were only sons/older brothers... anyway.)
#i told myself yesterday that i need to stop adding onto other people's posts bc im starting to annoy myself#but this was a fact i get excited about and thanks to adhd i have done some deep dives into this lmao#quirky I'm really sorry if this is annoying â let me know if you'd rather i put this kind of thing in the replies or my own posts#i have kind of hijacked this#lol new tag:#adhd is a blessing and a curse#queenpod#simon lupton#queen text

April, Japan 1979 - Freddie Mercury with Mr. Itami, his bodyguard in japan, during 'Live Killers' tour ('Jazz' tour)
đž"At the time 'Queen II' was the LP of the year, and the hysteria started the moment we got there; riots at the airport, bodyguards, just like the old Beatle days. The organization was spellbinding, and we loved every minute of it. We needed protection because you couldnât go down into the lobby of the hotel s it was infested with really nice people waiting for autographs. We each had a personal bodyguard and mine was called Itami. He was the head of the Tokyo bodyguard patrol, and his entire job was to pamper and cosset me throughout the tour and make sure no harm came to my person. He was very sweet and gave me a lovely Japanese lantern, which I treasure"
- Freddie Mercury
'Freddie Mercury: His Life in His Own Words' book - by Greg Brooks/ Simon Lupton
đ The European shows of this tour were recorded and 'Live Killers" was later released, June 26, 1979.
it's a bizarre mixture of several of the different concerts and nobody knows which ones

"This wonderful image was captured by Brian May at Ridge Farm in 1975, while Queen were recording their fourth album A Night At The Opera. It may even be the case that Freddie was working here upon his operatic masterpiece Bohemian Rhapsody âor Rhapsody, as he so often referred to it. Brian May recalled: âThis is one of my favourite pictures of Freddie, in relaxed mode, in Biba t-shirt, creating at a frightening rate whilst we were writing and recording, putting this album together.â" from "Freddie Mercury: His Life in His Own Words" by Greg Brooks, Simon Lupton

Two-Hour Documentary âThe Show Must Go On: The Queen + Adam Lambert Storyâ Airs Monday, April 29 (8:00 â 10:00 p.m. ET) on ABC
Photo Credit: Courtesy of Miracle Productions
On the heels of Queen and Adam Lambertâs show-stopping opening performance at the Oscars on Sunday, February 24, Lincoln Square Productions has acquired the U.S. television rights to a documentary from Miracle Productions on the iconic band and their new regular frontman, Adam Lambert. Produced by Jim Beach and acclaimed writer and filmmaker Simon Lupton, âThe Show Must Go On: The Queen + Adam Lambert Storyâ airs MONDAY, APRIL 29 (8:00 â 10:00 p.m. ET) on the ABC Television Network, prior to Queen and Lambertâs already sold-out July/August 2019 U.S. âRhapsodyâ tour.
With rare concert footage and exclusive, revealing portraits of the band members off-stage, âThe Show Must Go Onâ chronicles Queen and Lambertâs incredible journey since they first shared the stage together on âAmerican Idolâ in 2009. From his humble beginnings and meteoric rise on reality TV to now standing center stage as lead singer of Queen + Adam Lambert, the documentary features brand new interviews with Lambert, his parents Leila and Eber and Queen founding members Brian May and Roger Taylor, as well as âAmerican Idolâ judge Simon Cowell, Golden Globe and Oscar winner for Best Actor, âBohemian Rhapsodyââs Rami Malek and Foo Fightersâ Taylor Hawkins.
Queen remain vanguards of rock in the 21st century. They scored their first #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1980 and soared through that decade performing in stadiums, including their landmark 1985 performance at Live Aid which was seen by 3 billion people worldwide. Freddie Mercury died of AIDS in 1991 and a star-studded tribute concert the following year was thought to be the conclusion of Queen live.
âThe Show Must Go Onâ simultaneously follows the ensuing 27 years. Lambert, starting at the age of 10, is beginning to come of age, discovers his love of music and finds a voice of his own while, across the pond, the surviving members of Queen see their songs remain staples with DJâs, in clubs, in theatres around the globe with their hit musical âWe Will Rock Youâ and in movies. Lambert and Queen intersected in spectacular fashion when Lambert first performs with the band, singing âWe Are the Championsâ as one of only two finalists on Season 8 of âAmerican Idol.â The public reaction was remarkable and first seeded the idea that perhaps Lambert might become a permanent fixture in the Queen family. In 2012 Queen + Adam Lambert was born. To date Queen + Adam Lambert have performed together in nearly 200 sold-out shows in arenas and stadiums across the world. Â
âThe Show Must Go On: The Queen + Adam Lambert Storyâ is produced by Simon Lupton and Jim Beach for Miracle Productions and Matt Lombardi is executive producer for Lincoln Square Productions.

His highly anticipated third album âThe Original Highâ was executive produced by Max Martin and Shellback and included the smash hit âGhost Townâ. Adam joined the cast of Glee for a six-episode story in 2013 and performed the role of Eddie in Foxâs The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He went on to judge on The X Factor Australia where his artist, Isaiah, won the show. 2019 will see Adam releasing his fourth album, and also exploring the world of film, voicing character 'Emperor Maximus' in upcoming animated-live action hybrid movie âPlaymobil: The Movieâ.
