BEARS TAKE DOWN OMAHA IN OPENER
BERKELEY - An eventful season opener resulted in the Cal men's soccer team defeating visiting Omaha, 1-0, on Friday evening at Edwards Stadium. Freshman midfielder Paolo Carrillo-Weisenburger scored the first goal of his career for the Golden Bears, while senior goalkeeper Drake Callender saved a late penalty kick to preserve the victory. "This was a great opening game because we saw everything you could possibly see in a match," Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. "That's a great thing to get under your belt. All in all, when you play a good quality team to start your season, you're always going to be pushed to the limit, and Omaha's a good quality team. They have very good players and are well coached. We were pushed to our limit, and that's what we want especially early in the season. We beat a good team today." In a tight game that produced six shots on goal, Cal had a 7-2 first-half advantage. Both those shots for the Mavericks came early, as Diego Gutierrez hit the crossbar in the 13th minute and Miguel Gomez shot wide in the 23rd. Just seconds later, Carrillo-Weisenburger took a pass from Alonzo Del Mundo in the box and finished past Omaha goalie Ugo Tritz at the near post to give Cal the lead. "It's honestly pretty indescribable," Carrillo-Weisenburger said. "I'm super happy right now and happy for the team, too." The Bears took a flurry of shots over the 33rd and 34th minutes, as Simon Lekressner and Jonathan Estrada had shots blocked and then Tritz saved Estrada's follow-up effort. The second 45 minutes produced a slightly more even half, as Cal outshot the Mavs 5-3 and Omaha had its share of possession. In the 78th minute, a Cal foul resulted in the Mavericks' PK, with Martin Veys taking the spot kick. But the veteran Callender dove to stop Veys' shot and ultimately preserve the victory. "I tried to get a strong hand out there; he hit it pretty well," Callender said. "And then just getting up after the shot, finishing the play and holding onto (the ball) was a big factor, too. I had a gut feeling he was going to go to my left, so I just trusted myself." Cal (1-0) next plays 25th-ranked UC Irvine in another non-conference home game on Sunday at 12 p.m.

Bears Topple No. 4 Stanford 1-0 In Big Clasico
Drake Callender earns his sixth shutout of the season
Palo Alto, Calif. - Tommy Williamson earned and then scored on a second-half penalty kick and Drake Callender made three saves to shut out No. 4 Stanford in California's 1-0 upset of the Cardinal on a chilly night down on The Farm. The Golden Bears have now defeated two top five opponents in one week, including then-No. 1 Washington in Seattle. Cal's record improved to 8-6-3 (4-4-2 in the Pac-12). In the 56th minute, Cal senior defender Simon Lekressner played a beautiful ball out of the back to Williamson, a forward, streaking into the Stanford penalty area. Cardinal goalkeeper Andrew Thomas upended Williamson on the play leading to the PK. On the ensuing spot kick, Williamson slotted the ball past Thomas for the game winner and for his team-leading ninth goal of the year. "Simon played a really nice backspin ball to my foot, and I took a touch," Williamson said. "It was a bit of a heavy touch, and I knew I had to lift it over (Thomas) to try to get around him and slot it. But he swiped me and took me out, and that led to the PK. It was a definite goal if I got past the keeper. And then I felt confident enough to step up to take the PK and put it in the back of the net." After an up and down regular season, the Bears have put themselves in contention to potentially earn selection into the postseason, with the NCAA announcing its 48-team field on Monday. Along with the wins over No. 1 UW and No. 4 Stanford, Cal also owns a 3-0 victory at No. 16 UC Santa Barbara. "It was obviously a fantastic effort and an incredible result," Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said of the victory. "We now have three wins on the road against top 16 teams. We hope the selection committee sees our body of work and decides to take us to the NCAA tournament. There are not many teams in the United States that have the wins that we do. If they're a committee that looks at big wins, then they're going to be considering us closely for selection." Cal and Stanford split the season series, including Stanford's 2-1 win in Berkeley on Sept. 20. Just like that game, Thursday's match was a close one. Like the earlier match, the Bears out-hustled and out shot the Cardinal - but this time, the scoreboard reflected their superior play. "Today we didn't have anything to lose, and we just came out together as a team," said Callender, who claimed his sixth shutout of the season. "This game means more than the others because of the rivalry. There's a lot of good morale within the team that helped us win today. I was proud of everyone, and getting the shutout was great, too."

BEARS BEAT #6 STANFORD IN THRILLER Foe Nuphaus Named Pac-12 Player Of The Week
PALO ALTO – Cal men's soccer coach Kevin Grimes thought his team had been playing in playoff form the past couple weeks. When a perfect storm of injuries and inexperience put the Bears out of NCAA Tournament contention, Thursday's season-finale at No. 6 Stanford became Cal's postseason. The evening at Cagan Stadium ended with a mixture of smiles, laughter and tears of joy as the Bears knocked off their rival 1-0 in Palo Alto. "I've been around this block 19 times and I know when a team is in playoff form," Grimes said. "I told the team we are peaking at the right time. It's unfortunate we've had some tough results and some tough injuries this year, but they played like they were in playoff form tonight." Both teams created quality scoring chances, and the match appeared headed to overtime before Cal freshman defender JJ Foe Nuphaus came out of nowhere on a corner kick to head a shot past Stanford goalie Andrew Thomas in the 85th minute. It was the first goal of Nuphaus' career and earned him Pac-12 Player of the Week honors. "I wasn't going to go for the header, but Coach told me with five minutes left to go in," Nuphaus said. "I was able to sprint in and I saw where the ball was going, so I just dove into it." Junior goalies Noah Texter and Drake Callender combined for Cal's fifth shutout of the season. All the more impressive considering it was on Stanford’s home field and they were averaging 3 goals per game at home. "It's the first time beating Stanford in my career. It's something personal," said Shinya Kadono, who broke into tears when the clock ran out. "We've been unlucky with some tough matches and we wanted to finish strong. This is a perfect way to end it. I couldn't contain my emotions." The Bears (7-9-2, 3-7 Pac-12) lost senior Spencer Held to a season-ending injury before the year ever started and freshman Christian Gomez suffered a broken leg in the third match of the season. Callender, All-Pac-12 midfielder Sam Ebstein, midfielder Simon Lekressner and defender Christopher Grey also all missed time with injuries this season. Cal also played the season with a roster with 12 true freshmen or redshirt freshmen – exactly half of its roster. "This is incredible for the seniors more than anything," Grimes said. "They've had such a difficult year with dealing with lineup changes and injuries, and going through some growing pains with a lot of young players. But they're not young anymore. Look at the way they played tonight. They played incredible." Kadono finished his senior season leading the Pac-12 with 12 goals, 26 points and 58 shots. He had three shots Thursday night and Ebstein had two. Texter and Callender made two saves each. "The seniors have put so much work into this program," Nuphaus said. "It's huge for them to go out like this. We didn't have the season we wanted, but to do something like this on Stanford's field is just how we wanted it." Along with Kadono, Ebstein and Held, fellow seniors Sam Junqua and Halil Beqaj wrapped up their Cal careers on Thursday. "My only wish for the group is that we were going to play next week," Grimes said. "I really believe that if we wouldn't' have had the injuries we had that we would have been there. The way we played tonight, we are a playoff team."
