happy wip weds uhhhhhh this fic is titled sparrow oak garcia's art studio for wayward teens in my gdocs and was largely inspired by musings with my beloved friend circle about how in a no-doodler world sparrow has the most potential to be The Adult Friend of the teens so yeah
(plain text under the cut)
“Tell you what,” Normal’s mom smiles – the same mischievous smile that Normal must have inherited – and she pulls a card out of the pockets of her cardigan, offering one to Hermie. “This is a voucher for one of my lessons, address and all. If you ever need something to do on weekend evenings, or even if you just need a place to hang out, feel free to stop by any time. Any friend of Normal’s is welcome.”
Hermie, despite themself, takes the card.
Friend of Normal’s. They are not a friend of Normal’s, despite his best efforts. Hermie knows this, Normal’s other friends know this, and now they’re pretty sure that Normal’s own mom knows this from the way she watches them passively, like she’s waiting for them to snap and tear the card into pieces and shatter Normal’s heart in the same fell swoop.
Hermie refuses to give her the satisfaction. Instead, they swallow and plaster a fake smile onto their face, slipping the card into their pocket. “Thank you, Miss Swallows-Oak-Garcia,” they say, stilted.
“Just Oak-Garcia now, and you can just call me Sparrow. Makes it easier for all of us, hm?” Normal’s mom gives a little wave of her hand, gesturing Normal to her. “It was nice meeting you, Hermie. I hope I see you again.”
Another threat. Hermie bristles, but they keep the fake smile plastered on for as long as they can, fiddling with the card in their pocket. “Likewise,” they lie.
#dndads#kasey writes stuff#sparrow oak garcia#hermie the unworthy#sorry for transing sparrow's gender except no im not#its the vibes yknow. the vibes !!!#anyways silver and cookies inspired this one i hope i can finish it

This full Moon has also been called the Long Night Moon (Mohican), as it rises during the “longest” nights of the year, near the December winter solstice. This name is doubly fitting because December’s full Moon shines above the horizon for a more extended period than most full Moons.
• This December is unique because there will be TWO new Moons. This is called a Black Moon.
A Black Moon is a special kind of New Moon, just as a Blue Moon is a special kind of Full Moon. Neither are astronomical terms; both are catch phrases for an unusual lunar calendar occurrence. For this reason, the definition of a Black Moon can vary and may refer to:
-The second new Moon in a month. This is the definition of Black Moon that’s used most often & it’s the most common. It occurs once every 29 months.
-The third new Moon in a season of four New Moons. Every season (spring, summer, fall, winter) has 3 months & 3 new Moons. However, occasionally (every 33 months), there is a season with 4 new Moons. In this case, the third New Moon is called a Black Moon.
-When there are NO new Moons in a month. This can only happen in February since it’s the only calendar month that is shorter (28 days) than the lunar month. When there is not a new Moon in February, there will be two new Moons for both January & March. It’s a rare occurrence (every 19 years or so) and the next one isn’t until 2033.

“Yule” comes from Old English geol, which shares a history with the equivalent word from Old Norse, jól. Both these words referred to a midwinter festival centered around the winter solstice, which traditionally marked the halfway point of the winter season. After the solstice—the shortest day of the year—the days again begin to grow longer, so it’s thought that Yule was a celebration of the re-appearance of the Sun &the fertile land’s rebirth.
• The celebration of Yule is one of the oldest winter celebrations in the world. Ancient people were hunters & spent most of their time outdoors. The seasons & weather played a significant part in their lives. The customs & traditions associated with it vary widely. Scholars have connected the original celebrations of Yule to the Wild Hunt, the god Odin & the heathen Anglo-Saxon Mōdraniht (“Mothers’ Night”)
• Some believe it marks the rebirth of the Sun (the God) from the Earth (the Goddess) & the cold days of winter will soon begin to wane. The Goddess is seen in her virgin Maiden aspect
In towns and cities throughout Sweden during the Christmas season, large goats are constructed out of straw. It is thought that the tradition originated in ancient times, perhaps as a tribute to the god Thor, who was said to ride in a chariot pulled by goats. In Sweden the goat came to be associated with the Christmas celebration & the Yule goat is now considered by many to be a companion or counterpart to Santa Claus.
This connects to ancient proto-Slavic beliefs where the Koliada (Yule) festival honors the god of the fertile sun & the harvest. This god, Devac (also known as Dazbog or Dažbog), was represented by a white goat. Consequently the Koliada festivals always had a person dressed as a goat, often demanding offerings in the form of presents. A man-sized goat figure is known from 11th-century remembrances of Childermas, where it was led by a man dressed as Saint Nicholas, symbolizing his control over the Devil.
Related festivals:
•Christmas- December 25th:
An annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ as the son of God. For Christians, believing that God came into the world in the form of man to atone for the sins of humanity rather than knowing Jesus's exact birth date is considered to be the primary purpose of celebrating Christmas.
Hanukkah-December 25-January 2nd:
A Jewish festival commemorating the recovery of Jerusalem & subsequent rededication of the Second Temple at the beginning of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE.
Hanukkah is observed for eight nights & days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar. The festival is observed by lighting the candles of a candelabrum with nine branches, commonly called a menorah or hanukkiah.
Kwanzaa-December 26th-January 1st:
An annual celebration of African-American culture, culminating in a communal feast called Karamu, usually on the sixth day. It was created by activist Maulana Karenga, based on African harvest festival traditions from various parts of West & Southeast Africa. Kwanzaa was first celebrated in 1966.
A Kwanzaa ceremony may include drumming and musical selections, libations, a reading of the African Pledge & the Principles of Blackness, reflection on the Pan-African colors, a discussion of the African principle of the day or a chapter in African history, a candle-lighting ritual, artistic performance & finally, a feast of faith (Karamu Ya Imani).
Saturnalia- December 17-23rd:
An ancient Roman festival and holiday in honour of the god Saturn, The holiday was celebrated with a sacrifice at the Temple of Saturn, in the Roman Forum & a public banquet, followed by private gift-giving, continual partying & a carnival atmosphere that overturned Roman social norms: gambling was permitted & masters provided table service for their slaves as it was seen as a time of liberty for both slaves & freedmen alike.
A common custom was the election of a “King of the Saturnalia”, who gave orders to people, which were followed & presided over the merrymaking. The gifts exchanged were usually gag gifts or small figurines made of wax or pottery known as sigillaria. The poet Catullus called it “the best of days”.
Other celebrations:
Feast of Epona- December 18th:
Eponalia is the feast day of Gaulish Goddess Epona, the Divine Mare & in the time of the Roman Empire
Epona is known to be one of a very few Gaulish deities whose names were spread to the rest of the Roman Empire. This seems to have happened because Roman cavalry units stationed in Gaul followed her & adopted her as their Patroness. This may have started because many of the cavalry troops were conscripted from Gaul as they were superb horsemen. From Gaul the Romans took Epona with them including to Rome where She was given her own feast day on the 18 December. They worshipped her as Epona Augusta or Epona Regina & invoked her on behalf of the Emperor. She even had a shrine in the barracks of the Imperial Bodyguard.
Hunting of the Wren-December 26th:
A traditional custom carried out on the Isle of Man on St. Stephen’s Day. It consists of groups of people going around villages and towns singing and dancing a traditional song and dance around a decorated wren pole.
The earliest and most common folklore story accounting for the origin of hunt the wren tells of a fairy/enchantress/witch whose beauty lures the men of the Isle of Man to harm, for which she is chased and is changed into the form of a wren. It is therefore in punishment for her actions that the wren is hunted on St. Stephen’s Day

Tumblr Story: Reformed Bully
Note: For @dollya-robinprotector. Since you’re going through a rough patch, I thought some fluff would work in easing the stress.
Very light FGO/Passing Days-DOL crossover and all. Based heavily off this one ask and this comic that led me to meeting you, Dollya. :) Written as thanks for talking with me and bonding over the FGO gnomes.
Was listening to YOASOBI’s Idol when writing this. And Dr. Stone’s One Small Step.
Now if y’all excuse me, I need to sleep. More hematopathology work tomorrow.
--------------------------
By the time Vy had noticed the door show up in her room, she wasn’t surprised anymore. It even decided to appear once she had finished packing up the latest batch of magic peanut butter cookies for the Servants, but compared to the previous door, this one had—
“A silver handle…?” Unlike all of Chaldea’s sliding doors and the previous magic entrance that led to another Master’s world, this door looked almost ordinary, its white oak furnishings and matching pale silver doorknob making it look like it came out of a Home Depot. Even when compared to the white walls of her room in Novum Chaldea, the newest entryway looked… mundane. In spite of its faint glowing too.
Vy considered. Glancing down at her bags of cookies, one in particular stood out to Vy’s eye. It was a bit lopsided from including some of the bigger cookies of the batch, not to mention the rather crooked purple ribbon bow, but it was… it was apparently glowing the same faint yellow as the new door.
With one last look at the door, Vy felt herself smile wryly. “I guess… if this is glowing too… might as well try and take a chance as long as I’m not gone for too long, right? Just have to wear the right Mystic Code…”
--------------------------
“Nngh…”
“…Oh dear,” Vy said for herself when stepping through the magic door. What waited beyond it was a grassy hill, a single tree overlooking what looked like a farm, and a single man lying in the grass, asleep with—with actual tears in his eyes. It wasn’t a stretch to believe he was suffering from a nightmare in spite of the warm atmosphere around him, but add in the light thrashing and the sweat beading his forehead, Vy knew she couldn’t leave him be.
The blond fringe of hair hiding one side of his face away from view was the last nail in the metaphorical coffin. If his hair was ginger-colored instead of blonde, then—
I want to help this person just like I help Robin.
It was why Vy kept the one bag of cookies from Chaldea nestled close to the chest of her Decisive Battle uniform, slowly getting to her knees and reaching out with one gloved hand.
“Sir,” she whispered softly, patting his shoulder as gently as she could. Her ponytail could be pushed over her shoulder later. Right now, someone was suffering, and— “Sir, please wake up. You’re having a nightmare.”
“N-Ngh—” The man groaned, nearly slapping her hand if not for Vy moving it out of the way just in time. “Lya—! Lya, I’m s—!”
“Sir,” Vy spoke more firmly, worry leaking into her voice before she realized it as her fingers reached up to pinch at his cheek. Sitting down on her knees, she said, “It’s alright — it’s over. It’s time for you to come back to reality now.”
The blond man got up with a start once her pinching registered, blue eyes wide with shock and tears once his spine made an audible crack from sitting up so abruptly. Vy immediately took her hand back, schooling her panic as best as she could once he looked at her past the haze in his blue eyes. “Lya—!” he blinked. “You’re… you’re not Lya.” His brow furrowed almost immediately, a glare settling in his eyes as he took her in. “Who are you, where did you come from, and when did you get to this farm?”
Typical, Vy thought. Outwardly, she did her best to smile placatingly, shrugging her shoulders. “Good morning to you too, good sir. I’m Vy — consider me a passerby who came through a magic door and saw someone crying in their sleep and therefore couldn’t leave them alone,” she said, pointing at her own eyes past her glasses to gesture to her newly awake companion. The “magic door” part of her statement wasn’t a complete lie, but it was enough to wipe some of the apprehension off of his face. “I’ve had experience with waking up with tears in my eyes, see.”
“…Oh.” And as soon as he said it, the man raised one calloused hand to wipe at his face, the tattooed wristband on his knuckles shining a darker shade of black with the droplets sticking to his skin with the motion. “…Did I look that much like shit?”
“Not as bad as someone who’s had the life literally burned out of them, no.” Vy said immediately, the image of the many victims of Camelot Gawain's Excalibur Galatine coming to the forefront of her mind before she pushed the thought away. That sight was just plain disgusting. “It could’ve been worse.”
Now the man was looking at her with a completely new face. “Burned?”
She smiled and offered the bag of cookies in her arms to him instead. “Yep. I’ve seen worse than someone crying in their sleep, so you have nothing to worry about,” she answered in regards to his unspoken question, shaking her head. “Enough of debating the ‘worse’ in looks. Would you like some cookies? I have a bag right here for you.”
“…Cookies?” The man wasn’t staring daggers at her at least, but he still looked wary. “You made them?”
“With just peanut butter, eggs, and sugar, yes. They’re supposed to be ‘magic.’” Vy felt herself smile a bit wider once she could see the curiosity start to dawn on the man’s face. She offered the bag to him again, lopsided purple ribbon bow and all. “Don’t worry, I didn’t poison them and I taste-tested them beforehand. It just looked like you needed something sweet to work off the nightmare, sir.”
The man glanced at her, then at the bag in her hands, and back at her. “You… You don’t even know me,” he slowly choked out, a large drop of a tear forming in the corner of his visible eye as the blue of his iris widened to reflect her image. “You only just… you only just stumble on me, and you just—”
Vy wasn’t sure whether to smile or just wait. She decided to opt for both while adding in an extra shrug of her shoulders.
“I…” The man choked again, shaking his head while scrubbing at his face with his hand again. The tattoos — he had more on his other hand and even his neck — all of them looking like shackles to match his voice coming out vulnerable and raw-sounding once he said, “I hurt the woman I love. I hurt more than just her. I-I’m still scared I could hurt the family she gave me. So then, why would you—”
“What’s wrong,” Vy said quietly to cut off the self-deprecating rant, “with wanting to help someone, then?”
The man fell silent, the tear in his eye slowly growing big enough to streak his cheek as it then fell to the grass between them.
With a bit of mustered courage — from Mash, from Artoria, from Achilles, from Robin — Vy smiled a bit wider as she reached over with her left hand — glove, lotus-shaped Command Seals and all — to wipe at the man’s exposed cheek. “Hurt is just gonna happen, sir. That’s just how life is,” she said in a softer voice, ignoring the wetness starting to spread out against the fingertips of her glove as she rubbed his cheekbone as gently as she could. As Da Vinci might’ve done in her place, as the Eternal Genius. As Dr. Roman might’ve done in her place, as a medical professional — as a living human from King Solomon’s remains. “And even if I don’t know what happened to hurt you so much, what matters now is how you move forward in the face of all of it. And if you’re waking up like this, crying and worrying about how to treat the person you love even after you hurt her, I’d like to think you’re walking in the right direction.”
The man half-snorted, half-sniffled, but he didn’t slap her hand away. Instead, he weakly leaned into her palm, his other hand coming up to weakly grasp at the bag of cookies sitting between them. “…Huh.” A weak laugh leaves his lips, blue eyes teary still as he closed them for a shaky inhale of breath. “Guess I’m more fucked up than I thought, listening to a stranger and taking fucking peanut butter cookies from them.”
“I’m not a stranger when I previously said my name, sir, not to mention I offered the cookies in the first place,” Vy said plainly, but she still smiled at him. It was the least she could do. “And really — we’re all struggling in life. Might as well start somewhere. So.” She pushed the cookies into his shaking palm, forcing as much cheer into her voice as possible. “My name is Vy. What is yours, sir?”
The smile he gives her in that moment makes her think, Robin, again. Even with the ear piercings and the tattoos, his face looks bright for the first time ever in the sunlight peeking past the tree hanging over them and the farm sitting far away. “…Whitney. It’s… it’s Whitney.”
“Well then!” Vy hummed, making sure to pat his wet cheek a few more times for good measure before lowering her left hand to take his in a squeeze. “It’s nice to meet you, Whitney! Hurt and all! I have some time on my hands being a passerby, so why don’t we chat for a bit? Hopefully get the tears out of you too!”
Because when barely anyone outside of Mash and the Servants — Robin especially — reached out when she woke up crying, the least Vy could do was make sure no one else could have a repeat experience.

essay about grief and possessions
i don't expect to use this essay for anything, and maybe thought somebody might resonate with it. i hope it does.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i crave the proof that people exist, or more specifically, existed. it's why i love old things; they show a life lived. and when someone is ripped from you so suddenly, you hold on to anything that shows that they were ever there.
memories are unreliable. i remember a vacation i took several years ago, and for a moment i can see him there, walking just ahead of me. then i realize that's impossible; he had been dead for a year.
pictures feel strange and altered, when i see one of him. it feels like looking into another life of my own. seeing his face puts me directly back into the years he was living--for a moment, he doesnt feel gone--he feels alive. pictures do not give any inkling he is dead, or that time has even gone on from that point it was taken. he is eternal in that paper of captured light.
possessions and objects, however, tell a much different story. the object itself is indicative of a person: my stepfather owned countless dvds, office supplies, and sweaters, all painstakingly made neat. every cassette that now lives in my room shows what music he listened to. his small silver pocket radio, with which i now listen to NPR, the station he loyally donated to for years. even the junk drawer: it has remained largely the same in all the days since his death. i dare not touch what i don't need to, to avoid disturbing the tape and matches his hands put there.
his watch continues to tick on, on, and on, counting the hours between his last heartbeat and now. three years, two months, sixteen days. every click of the seconds-hand puts more distance between me and him. but wearing it on my wrist makes me feel to connected to him. he wore this watch too. his skin warmed its metal back.
surrounded by his possessions is the only time i am okay with my foolishness enough to talk to him. im looking for the paperclip jar, and notice a sleeve of cookies still left on his desk. i say out loud, "you still going to eat those?" i laugh at my own joke, but not in a self-deprecating way--much the opposite--i am at ease and happy, sitting in his old oak chair.
these objects give me a comfort no kind word or condolence has ever given me. i can't know for sure where he is now, but i do know that the sweaters i wear every winter, still very faintly tinged with his smell, are solid proof he was alive and that i knew him. even as my memory of him gradually fades, his presence can be found in his belongings.

(Sorry it's a day late!)
Yancy couldn't mess this up. He couldn't. Wilford is the best thing that ever happened to him, and he deserved the entire universe handed over on a silver platter. He's hardly ever nervous... fuck, he doesn't get nervous.
But now, as he's leading Wilford to the special spot he prepared for them, he's pretty sure his heart is about to leap out of his chest.
He doesn't have experience with this kind of thing. Is it going to be too much? Not enough? God, Yancy hopes he likes it.
"Alright, baby... here we are." Gesturing ahead, he points at a spot beneath a large oak tree next to the tranquil lake that Yancy liked to visit from time to time. The spot is laid out with soft red and pink blankets, and rose petals sprinked over the area. A lovely picnic is set up with different sweets and delicious pasta and wine. There's bouquets of flowers surrounding the space, and even balloons.
And when Wilford turns to look back at him, Yancy is holding a small gift box. It contains three pairs of earrings in varying shades of pink diamonds. One of the pairs seems to be made from a pink shell, carved to look like posies. "Will you be my Valentine, Wilford?"
Wilford's brain didn't know it was Valentine's until it was too late. Until all of the good chocolate had been bought, and the only flowers left were ones that started dying already. He felt bad. All he managed to get Yancy was a teddy bear and some of his chocolate chip cookies. Shaped like hearts of course. But it didn't feel like enough. And then when Yancy said he had his own surprise... damnit, he was really bad at this.
He allows himself to be led along, taking his partner by the hand as they walked towards their surprise. When they do arrive, his eyes widen to the size of dinner plates.
It was beautiful. Yancy had done all of this... made this romantic picnic... for him? He can already feel the tears coming up as he turns around, prepared to thank him over and over. But he can't even do that without being punched in he gut with another surprise.
Diamonds. Pink diamonds. It was a major step up from the crappy ones he was currently wearing. Which he was pretty sure were staining his ears blue with age.
It was all so much... too much. He didn't deserve this. He didn't deserve Yancy. He didn't deserve diamonds or picnics. He could barely get Yancy a gift, and here he was... giving him all of this.
Wilford pulls Yancy into a hug, tears rolling down his face. "Oh, Yancy, thank you so much. Of course I'll be your Valentine... Always."

Yule Info Post
Probably one of the most well known Sabbats (up there with Samhain), Yule is typically known as being very similar to the widely celebrated Christmas holiday. In this post I want to go over the history and common traditions often celebrated with Yule!

History
Yule marks the journey of the Sun King to bring light into the world. The following days would gradually become longer as the Sun King made his journey across the sky. Due to this, candles and fire play an important role in Yule traditions.
The pre-Christian festival originated in Scandinavia and was later subsumed, into the Christian holiday of Christmas. Although the roots of this festival can be very difficult to track due to the ancient longevity of the festival, it is typically assumed that Yule began as the festival of “jol” in Norse culture.
Celebrations
In the Northern Hemisphere, Yule is observed during December 21–22 ; while in the Southern Hemisphere it is celebrated June 20–21.
Common Yule Symbols - Colors: Green, gold, silver, red
Foods: Cookies, dried fruits and nuts, ginger tea, spiced cider, cinnamon treats
Herbs: Bayberry, evergreen, frankincense, holly, pine, sage
Flowers: Calendula, sunflowers, wild ginseng, wormwood
Deities: Horned God, Orsis, Loki, Persephone, Dionysus
For those who practice the Wiccan religion, Yule is the second Sabbat of the Wheel of the Year. As such, the holiday is marked with rituals to welcome the return of the Sun. Others who participate in Celtic beliefs mark the holiday with reenactments of the battle between the Holly King (representing darkness) and the Oak King.
Common traditions include feasts, bonfires, exchanging gifts, and baking winter-festive treats.

Today, December’s full Moon is most commonly known as the Cold Moon—a Mohawk name that conveys the frigid conditions of this time of year, when cold weather truly begins to grip us.
This full Moon has also been called the Long Night Moon (Mohican), as it rises during the “longest” nights of the year, near the December winter solstice. This name is doubly fitting because December’s full Moon shines above the horizon for a more extended period than most full Moons.
In Europe, ancient pagans called the December full Moon the “Moon Before Yule,” in honor of the Yuletide festival celebrating the return of the sun heralded by winter solstice.

The celebration of Yule is one of the oldest winter celebrations in the world. Ancient people were hunters & spent most of their time outdoors. The seasons & weather played a significant part in their lives. The customs and traditions associated with it vary widely.
Scholars have connected the original celebrations of Yule to the Wild Hunt, the god Odin, and the heathen Anglo-Saxon Mōdraniht ("Mothers' Night")
Some believe it marks the rebirth of the Sun (the God) from the Earth (the Goddess) & the cold days of winter will soon begin to wane.
In Sweden the goat came to be associated with the Christmas celebration, and the Yule goat is now considered by many to be a companion or counterpart to Santa Claus.
Related festivals:
Christmas- An annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ as the son of God, primarily observed on December 25th
Hanukkah- A Jewish festival commemorating the recovery of Jerusalem & subsequent rededication of the Second Temple at the beginning of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE.
Kwanzaa- An annual celebration of African-American culture from December 26 to January 1st, culminating in a communal feast called Karamu, usually on the sixth day.
Saturnalia-
is an ancient Roman festival and holiday in honour of the god Saturn, held on 17 December of the Julian calendar & later expanded with festivities through to 23 December. The holiday was celebrated with a sacrifice at the Temple of Saturn, in the Roman Forum & a public banquet, followed by private gift-giving, continual partying & a carnival atmosphere that overturned Roman social norms: gambling was permitted & masters provided table service for their slaves as it was seen as a time of liberty for both slaves and freedmen alike.
A common custom was the election of a "King of the Saturnalia", who gave orders to people, which were followed & presided over the merrymaking. The gifts exchanged were usually gag gifts or small figurines made of wax or pottery known as sigillaria. The poet Catullus called it "the best of days".
Other celebrations:
Feast of Epona-
Eponalia is the feast day of Gaulish Goddess Epona, the Divine Mare & in the time of the Roman Empire it was celebrated on December 18th.
Hunting of the Wren-
A traditional custom carried out on the Isle of Man on the 26 December, St. Stephen's Day.
Stephen's Day
