Publishers' Binding Thursday
Today's Publishers' Binding Thursday book was found while simply browsing our stacks—and what a find it is! This is Poems, Dramatic and Lyrical by English poet, coin enthusiast, and botanist John Leicester Warren, Lord de Tabley (1835-1895). It was published in London by Elkin Mathews (1851-1921) and John Lane (1854-1925) at the Sign of the Bodley Head and in New York by Macmillan and Company in 1893. The book features five engravings by British artist, illustrator, and printer Charles Ricketts (1866-1931) and the bookplate of John Leicester Warren designed by Scottish artist William Bell Scott (1811-1890). Warren had an interest in bookplates and became an authority on them.
The binding was designed by Charles Ricketts, possibly with help from someone with the initials H.L.S. (or those initials in another order). Ricketts's initials and those of the mysterious H.L.S. are stamped in gold in opposite corners of the covers—C.R. in the top left and H.L.S. in the bottom right. The cover features in the upper righthand corner an angel inside of a golden heart holding a lyre made from wings and a heart. Surrounding this is a pattern of repeated rose petals, which to us look a bit like teeth or hot air balloons. The book cloth is a leafy green color that on our copy has either been glued unevenly or has become rumpled with time.

Host Country Final Report 4.25.19

Host Country Report: The Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic is a beautiful country located in the Caribbean, surrounded by both the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, geographically connected to the country of Haiti, and is in the company of other culturally similar Caribbean countries such as Cuba, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, etc. The size of the Dominican Republic is roughly comparable to the size of U.S states Vermont and New Hampshire combined and there is an estimated population of 11 million people as of 2019. The official language is Spanish and the most prominent religion is Roman Catholicism—with about 95% of the population being Roman Catholic according to the CIA World Factbook.
Historically speaking, the Dominican Republic is a country of international significance as it was the first Spanish colony in the western hemisphere of the world. In 1492 Christopher Columbus landed on the island and referred to it as “Hispaniola” or “Little Spain” in English, soon the Spaniards would arrive in Santo Domingo, the current capital of the Dominican Republic. But even before the Spanish colonized the Dominican Republic, the Dominican Republic was inhabited by the Taíno Indians—a group of indigenous people native to the Caribbean who belonged to an even larger group referred to as the Arawak. The Taíno Indians were polytheistic and lived simple lives based on their relationships to their many gods and with the Dominican Republic having been colonized by the Spanish, a predominantly Roman Catholic country, naturally the Dominican Republic was religiously impregnated by Roman Catholicism---forcing the natives to convert. It can be noted that the Dominican Republic retained a high level of Catholicism up until the country fell into the hands of the dictator Trujillo—because during this time the Dominican Republic was being ruled with an “iron fist” which can be seen throughout his 31-year rule. There was a large emphasis on religion during this time up until the Catholic Church, after supporting Trujillo for three decades, decided to withdraw support for the dictator due to the growing disdain towards Trujillo.
Politically, the Dominican Republic has undergone quite the transformation. The current political system in the Dominican Republic is very different from their previous one. Currently, the Dominican Republic is a representative democracy but prior the Dominican Republic was under the rule of the dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina, who ruled the country for 31 years until he was assassinated. Trujillo’s rule changed the Dominican Republic forever in the sense that he instituted racist policies that targeted Haitians and Black Dominicans, despite being part Mulatto and Haitian himself… Anyone who went against Trujillo mysteriously disappeared and nay-sayers were often jailed and tortured. In 1962 Trujillo promised free elections, yet, anyone who campaigned against him for the Presidency quickly disappeared or withdrew from the race. This was because during Trujillo’s younger years he formed a gang called “La 42”, this gang would eventually become his group of personal bodyguards who did everything he instructed. And since Trujillo became President, they had little inclination to refuse his requests since La 42 would also benefit greatly. La 42 would lay the groundwork for Trujillo to win his initial presidency in 1930 by taking out the competition using any means necessary to ensure a win for Trujillo. After Trujillo “ran” for President and “won”, Trujillo’s racist and colorist attitude slowly started to show as he would send Haitians back over the Dominican/Haitian border along with dark skinned Dominicans. This was only the beginning of his desire to rid the Dominican Republic of dark-skinned people, soon his Anti-Haitianism would become even more prevalent when he sent the Dominican army to kill over 30 thousand Haitians at the Dominican/Haitian border in 1937.
The entire Trujillo era lead to the internal disdain for Haitians by Dominicans simply due to nationalism and colorism. It’s imperative to mention this part of Dominican history in-depth because it paved the way for modern day colorism to bleed into Dominican society and offers insight into underlying issues that one could face while visiting the Dominican Republic. Although in 2019 it’s not as bad as it was, the effects of colorism on the people of the Dominican Republic can still be seen today through things such as: people developing words to discriminate against/shame darker-skinned Dominicans, the normalization of stereotyping darker skinned Dominicans as low class or poor, the emerging market for skin bleaching creams, and the over-whelming portrayal of only lighter skinned/white looking Dominicans in the media.
Moving onto gender and equality in the Dominican Republic, in 1942 women got the right to vote after a series of constitutional reformations. Politically, the Dominican Republic is a relatively progressive country and in the late 90s the first female quota law was enacted into congress on December 21st, 1997. The law required that at least 25% (later raised to 33%) of elective spots in political parties would be occupied by women. The political tone of the Dominican Republic as of recently is tolerant and progressive, making it not only a beautiful place to visit, but a beautiful place to live.
The Dominican Republic is also known for its cultural aspects such as food, dance, and music. The Dominican Republic is the birthplace of Merengue, a cultural dance and musical style that mixed both European and African ancestry to form a uniquely Dominican product. Merengue music is made using the tambora drum, guiro, saxophone, and an accordion. Food in the Dominican Republic is a big deal just like anywhere else in the world, as most of it is grown locally due to a large population of Dominican’s being subsistence farmers. The national dish of the Dominican Republic is La Bandera—a dish consisting of rice, beans, meat, and salad. The Dominican Republic’s cuisine is also known for their use of sazon/sofrito which is a blend of herbs and spices that is used to season and really highlight the flavor of whatever is being cooked. Much like the people in Spain, Dominicans think that lunch is the most important meal and tend to focus on making that, food is often a sign of peace so it’s common for people in the Dominican Republic to share their food with friends and family. Culturally speaking Dominicans are very proud of their cuisine as it is a blend of the European, Spanish, and Taíno Indian cultures.

Agatha Christie, a woman whose life was filled to the brim with mystery and a woman I truly look up to. She was born Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller on September 15, 1890, to a wealthy family in Torquay, Devon. Agatha was the youngest of three children. Agatha has described her childhood as “very happy.” She was always surrounded by strong and independent women. Also, she spent a lot of time between Devon, her grandmother and aunt’s house in Ealing, and parts of Southern Europe where her family spent holiday. Christie was raised with esoteric beliefs and she believed that her mother was a psychic that had the ability of second sight. Agatha’s mother insisted that she received home education. In her education, she learned reading, writing, basic math, and she learned to play the piano and mandolin. Agatha was a lover of reading from a very young age and in April 1901, she wrote her first poem “The Cowslip” at age ten. Agatha’s father was often sick and suffered from a series of heart attacks. In November of 1901, he passed at age 55. His death left the family in a very uncertain economic situation. In 1902, Agatha was sent to get a formal education at Miss Guyer’s Girls School in Torquay. However, she found it difficult to adjust. In 1905, she was sent to Paris where she was educated in three pensions - Mademoiselle Cabernet's, Les Marroniers, and then Miss Dryden's.
In 1910, Agatha returned to England to find that her mother was ill. They decided to spend three months at the Gezirah Palace Hotel in Cairo. While in Cairo, Christie attended many social functions in search of a husband. When she returned to England she continued her social outings as well as writing and performing amateur theatricals. It was during this time that she wrote some poetry and music, however, even though some pieces were published, she decided against focusing on writing for future professions. Christie wrote her first short story, “The House of Beauty”, (later published as “The House of Dreams”) while recovering in bed from an undisclosed illness. “The Call of Wings” and “The Little Lonely God” followed. Magazines rejected all of her early submissions, made under pseudonyms, however, some were revised and published later.
Christie then set her first novel, “Snow Upon the Desert,” in Cairo and drew upon her experiences in that city. She wrote this under the pseudonym Monosyllaba. All the publishers that Agatha contacted declined her novel. Her mother suggested inquiring with a family friend, Eden Philpotts, who obliged and encouraged Christie’s writing. He even sent an introduction to his personal literary agent, Hughes Massie, who also rejected “Snow Upon the Desert,” but suggested a second novel.
It was also during this time that Agatha entered into several short-lived relationships and got engaged to another. Then she met Archibald Christie at a dance that was given by Lord and Lady Clifford at Ugbrooke. Archie was born in India, he was an army officer who was seconded to the Royal Flying Corps in April 1913. The two fell in love quickly, but when he learned he would be stationed in Farnborough, Archie proposed and Agatha accepted. With the outbreak of World War One, Archie was sent to France to fight the Germans. The couple married on Christmas Eve in 1914 at Emmanuel Church in Clifton, Bristol. In 1918, Archie was placed back in Britain as a colonel in the Air Ministry. During his time in the military, Agatha involved herself in the war effort. In 1914, she joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment where she tended to wounded soldiers at a hospital in Torquay as an unpaid nurse. She completed 3,400 hours of unpaid work between October 1914 and December 1916. She worked as an apothecaries assistant in 1917 as a dispenser where she earned 16 euros a year until the end of her service in 1918. After the war, the Christie couple settled into an apartment in northwest London.
Christie had been a fan of detective novels for a while and wrote her own titled “The Mysterious Affair at Styles.” The inspiration for some characters in this novel came from real Belgian refugees who lived in Torquay as well as Belgian soldiers she had helped during her time as a volunteer nurse. She began work on the novel in 1916, writing most of it in Dartmoor. The original manuscript was rejected by publishing companies, but after keeping the manuscript for several months, John Lane at The Bodley Head offered to accept it, only if Christie changed the ending. She did so and signed a contract. The novel was published in 1920.
Meanwhile, Agatha had fallen into married life. She gave birth to her only child, Rosalind Margaret Hicks, in 1919. Archie left the Air Force at the end of the war and started working in the city financial sector. Agatha’s second novel was published in 1922 by The Bodley Head, was titled “The Secret Adversary.” “Murder on the Links” was her third novel and was published in 1923. She also wrote a few short stories that were commissioned by Bruce Ingram, editor of The Sketch magazine. Archie and Agatha left their daughter with Agatha’s mother and sister while they toured the world promoting the British Empire Exhibition. They toured in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii. The couple learned to surf in South Africa, and then in Waikiki, they were some of the first Britons to surf standing up.
Late in 1926, Archie asked Agatha for a divorce since he had fallen in love with Nancy Neele, a friend of Major Belcher. Major Belcher was the director of the British Empire Mission. Archie had fallen for Nancy on the promotional tour. In December 1926, the couple got into an argument that ended with Archie leaving the home to spend the weekend with his mistress in Godalming, Surrey. The same evening Agatha left a note for her secretary saying she was going to Yorkshire. At 9:45, she left their home and later her car was found at Newlands Corner, parked above a chalk quarry with expired driving license and clothes.
The public was in an outcry. Over a thousand police officers, 15,000 volunteers, and several airplanes searched the landscape for her. Her disappearance was featured on the front page of The New York Times. Agatha was not found for ten days, even though there was an ongoing search. On December 14, 1926, she was found at the Swan Hydropathic Hotel in Harrogate, Yorkshire where she was registered as Mrs. Teresa Neele from Cape Town.
In 1928, Archie and Agatha divorced and Archie married Nancy Neele. Agatha retained custody of their daughter and the name Christie for her writing. Later that year, Agatha left England for Istanbul and then Baghdad on the Orient Express. It was during this trip in which she met a young archaeologist named Max Mallowan. Max was thirteen years younger than her, but they married in September 1930. This marriage was a happy one and lasted until Agatha’s death in 1976. Agatha often joined Max on his archaeological expeditions in which she gained a lot of inspiration for several of her novels that are set in the Middle East. For example, her 1934 novel, “Murder on the Orient Express,” was written in the Pera Palace Hotel in Istanbul, Turkey.
During the Second World War, Christie work in the pharmacy at University College Hospital in London where she gained knowledge of poisons. This knowledge came in handy when she wrote her post-war crime novel. In 1934, she and Max purchased a home in Winterbrook. This was the couples main residence for the rest of their lives and where Christie did most of her writing.
Around 1941-1942, the British intelligence agency investigated Christie after a character called Major Bletchley appeared in her novel “N or M?” The government was afraid that Christie had a spy in the top-secret code-breaking center.
To honor her many works, Agatha was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire, then the following year she became the President of the Detection Club. In 1971, she was promoted to Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire, three years after her husband had been knighted for his archeological work in 1968.
Beginning in 1971 until 1974, Her health began to fail, although she continued to write. She died on January 12, 1976, at age 85 from natural causes in her home at Winterbrook. While her life was full of excitement and mystery, so were her novels. Agatha Christie, to this day, holds the title as one of the most influential mystery writers of all time.

The Witness on the Roof
The Witness on the Roof
The Bodley Head, a distinguished British publishing house, signed contracts with only two women authors in the 1920s: Agatha Christie and Annie Haynes. Christie soon moved to another house (with more lucrative terms) but Haynes stayed and her 10 very popular golden age crime novels were published prior to her death in 1929. Many of her books, including The Witness on the Roof, take place during…

Educated at Christ church, he joined the wits engaged in a struggle with Bentley, who represented the scholarship of the Cambridge whigs. Sir W. Temple had made some rash statements as to the antiquity of Phalaris in a treatise on ancient and modern learning, and this was the subject of attack by Wotton, a protégé of Bentley’s in his ‘Reflections on Ancient and Modern Learning,’ published in 1694. By way of covering Temple’s defeat, the Christ Church scholars determined to publish a new edition of the epistles of Phalaris. This was entrusted to Boyle, who, without asserting the epistles of Phalaris. This was entrusted to Boyle, who, without asserting the epistles to be genuine, as Temple had done, attacked Bentley for his rudeness in having withdrawn too abruptly a manuscript belonging to the King’s Library, which Boyle had borrowed. Bentley now added to a new edition of Wotton’s ‘Reflections’ a ‘Dissertation’ upon the epistles, from his own pen. Boyle was aided by Atterbury and Smalridge in preparing a defense, published in 1698 entitled ‘Dr. Bentley’s Dissertations … examined.’ Bentley returned to the charge and overwhelmed his opponents by the wealth of his scholarship. The dispute led to Swift’s ‘Battle of the Books.’” .

The family patriarch, Richard, Great Earl of Cork, expressly forbade his children the reading of romances. Upon learning that his sons Roger and Lewis were reading plays and romances while on the Continent under the tutelage of Marcombes (as Robert and Francis would be two years later), he issued a strict order that such corrupting entertainment be stopped.9 The Great Earl’s injunction apparently had little effect, sinice in 1651, Roger, Earl of Orrery, published Parthenis- sa… a work which, although very closely patterned upon French exemplars, is often considered to be the first modem English romance.10 Roger also bears the credit for introducing rhymed heroic dramas (again modelled after the French pattern) to the English stage… .in fact Roger became a highly-regarded playwright of the Restoration.11 Robert’s strong-willed sister Mary, Countess of Warwick, recounted that she too spent her days “seeing and reading plays and romances.”12 As for Robert, it has long been a staple of Boyle biogra- phers that he shared his father’s Puritanical opposition to romances. Peter Pett, in notes for an unpublished biography, recalled that his friend Boyle, at least once he began ethical and devotional pursuits, never “read either play or Romance; no not so much as those writ by his ingenious brother the earle of Orrery

627F Richard Head 1637?-1686?.
Proteus redivivus: the art of wheedling or insinuation, in general and particular conversations and trades. Together with the several actions, inclinations and passions of both sexes, and of all their professions and occupations. Discovering their many tricks and designs t self-advancement, though by indirect wayes and methods; fitly suited to these times, to prevent the vertuous from abuses, and to detect the enormities of the vitious. Furnished with many delightful songs in various chapters. Compil’d and publish’d formerly by R.H. but now reprinted with additions in every chapter, to almost one half of the book, by the same author.
London : printed for T.D. and are to be sold by most booksellers of London and Westminster, 1684. $3,900
Bound in full calf recently rebacked. Engraved frontis. (plate) signed: Wm Bodley sculp. The most important primary source on Head’s life is William Winstanley’s biographical entry published in his Lives of the most famous English poets (1687) – a credible if not reliable source insofar as Winstanley could claim to have been personally acquainted with Head. According to Winstanley, Head was a minister’s son, born in Ireland. His father was killed in the Irish rebellion of 1641, the incidents seem to be reflected in Head’s English Rogue, the satirical romance he published in 1665. His mother took him to England where she had relatives in Barnstaple. They later moved on to Plymouth, to Bridport and to Dorset where Head is known to have attended the town’s grammar school in 1650. Head was eventually admitted to the same Oxford College his father had attended (possibly New Inn Hall, from which a John Head graduated in 1628). His financial means being insufficient Head was taken from college and bound apprentice to a “Latin bookseller” in London “attaining to a good Proficiency in the Trade”, as Winstanley put it. “His genius being addicted to Poetry” he published his first poetical and satirical piece which Winstanley recorded as Venus Cabinet Unlock’d. This may be a reference to Giovanni Benedetto Sinibaldi’s The cabinet of Venus unlocked, and her secrets laid open. Being a translation of part of Sinibaldus, his Geneanthropeia, and a collection of some things out of other Latin authors, never before in English (London: Philip Briggs, 1658). Head married around that time. A second addiction to gambling cost him the profit he made as an author and with his shop. Head moved – or fled – to his homeland Ireland, where he gained esteem with his first comedy Hic et ubique, or, The Humors of Dublin – printed with a dedication to the Duke of Monmouth at his return to England in 1663. The Duke’s recompense remaining below expectations Head had to survive as a bookseller with shop addresses (so Sidney Lee) in Little Britain, and (so Gerard Langbaine) in Petty Canons Alley, off Paternoster Row and opposite Queen’s Head Alley. Winstanley located him in Queen’s Head Alley. If his reports are trustworthy, Head gathered some wealth in little time only to gamble it away again a little later. The English Rogue (1665) solved some of his financial problems. Its tales of drastic adventures were based on the model of Spanish rogue stories (such as Lazarillo de Tormes 1554), which were fashionable due to the contemporary publication of Scarron’s Roman Comique (or Comical Romance, so the English title which established the genre), and savory with the events Head could claim to have based on his personal experience. The censor, so Winstanley reported, rejected the manuscript as “too much smutty”. The softened book edition sold brilliantly and created a complex publishing history: The first edition published by Henry Marsh sold out within the year. Marsh died that very year, Francis Kirkman the business partner, to whom Marsh had been indebted, secured the rights and sold Head’s title in four further editions between 1666 and 1667. It remains unclear how the ensuing volumes two, three, and four, published in 1671, 1674 and 1680, came to be written (a fifth was promised and never appeared). Winstanley speaks of Head as the author indiscriminately. In the dedication to his Proteus redivivus (1675) Head, however, explicitly denies a hand in any part but the first. Kirkman asserted nonetheless that he and Head were responsible for the third and fourth parts. The preface to the latter is signed by both men – facts which make Head’s belated disclaimer suspicious. Head’s imprint as a publisher is found on several titles. Works from his pen appeared until 1677. Winstanley reports that Head drowned on a journey to the Isle of Wight; the report itself was made in June 1686, and this generally accepted as the date of his death, even though more accurately it is a terminus ante quem.

Edward’s last name is also spelled Wettenhall, Whetenhall, Whitnall, Withnoll, and Wythnall. He graduated B.D. at Oxford 26 May 1669, and was incorporated B.D. at Cambridge 1670. Michael Boyle the younger, the Archbishop of Dublin, brought him over to Dublin in 1672, as master of the blue-coat school. He was made a Doctor of Divinity at Trinity College, Dublin, became curate of St. Werburgh’s Church, and afterwards chantor of Christ Church.
At his own cost, Wetenhall restored the episcopal residence at Cork. As one of the seven bishops who remained in Ireland during the troubles which began in 1688, he was exposed to much ill-usage at the hands of the partisans of James II. He was probably the author of an anonymous tract ‘The Case of the Irish Protestants in relation to … Allegiance to … King William and Queen Mary,’ 1691 (27 October 1690). He signed the episcopal letter of thanks (November 1692) to Thomas Firmin for his exertions in relief of the distressed Protestants of Ireland. Only one Irish prelate, William Sheridan (died 1716) of Kilmore and Ardagh, was deprived (1691) as a nonjuror.
Wetenhall, who was translated as bishop of Kilmore and Ardagh on 18 April 1699, would not accept the preferment without trying to procure the restoration of Sheridan, to whose support he contributed. He restored the episcopal residence at Kilmore and rebuilt the cathedral at Ardagh (later demolished).

The Tenth Satire of Juvenal, Imitated
Let observation with extensive view, Survey mankind, from China to Peru; Remark each anxious toil, each eager strife, And watch the busy scenes of crowded life; Then say how hope and fear, desire and hate, O’erspread with snares the clouded maze of fate, Where wav’ring man, betray’d by vent’rous pride To tread the dreary paths without a guide, As treach’rous phantoms in the mist delude, Shuns fancied ills, or chases airy good. How rarely reason guides the stubborn choice, Rules the bold hand, or prompts the suppliant voice, How nations sink, by darling schemes oppress’d, When vengeance listens to the fool’s request. Fate wings with ev’ry wish th’ afflictive dart, Each gift of nature, and each grace of art, With fatal heat impetuous courage glows, With fatal sweetness elocution flows, Impeachment stops the speaker’s pow’rful breath, And restless fire precipitates on death.
But scarce observ’d the knowing and the bold, Fall in the gen’ral massacre of gold; Wide-wasting pest! that rages unconfin’d, And crowds with crimes the records of mankind, For gold his sword the hireling ruffian draws, For gold the hireling judge distorts the laws; Wealth heap’d on wealth, nor truth nor safety buys, The dangers gather as the treasures rise.
Let hist’ry tell where rival kings command, And dubious title shakes the madded land, When statutes glean the refuse of the sword, How much more safe the vassal than the lord, Low sculks the hind beneath the rage of pow’r, And leaves the wealthy traitor in the Tow’r, Untouch’d his cottage, and his slumbers sound, Tho’ confiscation’s vultures hover round.
The needy traveller, serene and gay, Walks the wild heath, and sings his toil away. Does envy seize thee? crush th’ upbraiding joy, Increase his riches and his peace destroy, New fears in dire vicissitude invade, The rustling brake alarms, and quiv’ring shade, Nor light nor darkness bring his pain relief. One shews the plunder, and one hides the thief.
Yet still one gen’ral cry the skies assails, And gain and grandeur load the tainted gales, Few know the toiling statesman’s fear or care, Th’ insidious rival and the gaping heir.
Once more, Democritus, arise on earth, With cheerful wisdom and instructive mirth, See motley life in modern trappings dress’d, And feed with varied fools th’ eternal jest: Thou who couldst laugh where want enchain’d caprice, Toil crush’d conceit, and man was of a piece; Where wealth unlov’d without a mourner died; And scarce a sycophant was fed by pride; Where ne’er was known the form of mock debate, Or seen a new-made mayor’s unwieldy state; Where change of fav’rites made no change of laws, And senates heard before they judg’d a cause; How wouldst thou shake at Britain’s modish tribe, Dart the quick taunt, and edge the piercing gibe? Attentive truth and nature to decry, And pierce each scene with philosophic eye. To thee were solemn toys or empty show, The robes of pleasure and the veils of woe: All aid the farce, and all thy mirth maintain, Whose joys are causeless, or whose griefs are vain.
Such was the scorn that fill’d the sage’s mind, Renew’d at ev’ry glance on humankind; How just that scorn ere yet thy voice declare, Search every state, and canvas ev’ry pray’r.
Unnumber’d suppliants crowd Preferment’s gate, Athirst for wealth, and burning to be great; Delusive Fortune hears th’ incessant call, They mount, they shine, evaporate, and fall. On ev’ry stage the foes of peace attend, Hate dogs their flight, and insult mocks their end. Love ends with hope, the sinking statesman’s door Pours in the morning worshiper no more; For growing names the weekly scribbler lies, To growing wealth the dedicator flies, From every room descends the painted face, That hung the bright Palladium of the place, And smok’d in kitchens, or in auctions sold, To better features yields the frame of gold; For now no more we trace in ev’ry line Heroic worth, benevolence divine: The form distorted justifies the fall, And detestation rids th’ indignant wall.
...
When first the college rolls receive his name, The young enthusiast quits his ease for fame; Through all his veins the fever of renown Spreads from the strong contagion of the gown; O’er Bodley’s dome his future labours spread, And Bacon’s mansion trembles o’er his head. Are these thy views? proceed, illustrious youth, And virtue guard thee to the throne of Truth! Yet should thy soul indulge the gen’rous heat, Till captive Science yields her last retreat; Should Reason guide thee with her brightest ray, And pour on misty Doubt resistless day; Should no false Kindness lure to loose delight, Nor Praise relax, nor Difficulty fright; Should tempting Novelty thy cell refrain, And Sloth effuse her opiate fumes in vain; Should Beauty blunt on fops her fatal dart, Nor claim the triumph of a letter’d heart; Should no disease thy torpid veins invade, Nor Melancholy’s phantoms haunt thy shade; Yet hope not life from grief or danger free, Nor think the doom of man revers’d for thee: Deign on the passing world to turn thine eyes, And pause awhile from letters, to be wise; There mark what ills the scholar’s life assail, Toil, envy, want, the patron, and the jail. See nations slowly wise, and meanly just, To buried merit raise the tardy bust. If dreams yet flatter, once again attend, Hear Lydiat’s life, and Galileo’s end.
Nor deem, when learning her last prize bestows The glitt’ring eminence exempt from foes; See when the vulgar ‘scape, despis’d or aw’d, Rebellion’s vengeful talons seize on Laud. From meaner minds, tho’ smaller fines content The plunder’d palace or sequester’d rent; Mark’d out by dangerous parts he meets the shock, And fatal Learning leads him to the block: Around his tomb let Art and Genius weep, But hear his death, ye blockheads, hear and sleep.
...
Enlarge my life with multitude of days, In health, in sickness, thus the suppliant prays; Hides from himself his state, and shuns to know, That life protracted is protracted woe. Time hovers o’er, impatient to destroy, And shuts up all the passages of joy: In vain their gifts the bounteous seasons pour, The fruit autumnal, and the vernal flow’r, With listless eyes the dotard views the store, He views, and wonders that they please no more; Now pall the tasteless meats, and joyless wines, And Luxury with sighs her slave resigns. Approach, ye minstrels, try the soothing strain, And yield the tuneful lenitives of pain: No sounds alas would touch th’ impervious ear, Though dancing mountains witness’d Orpheus near; Nor lute nor lyre his feeble pow’rs attend, Nor sweeter music of a virtuous friend, But everlasting dictates crowd his tongue, Perversely grave, or positively wrong. The still returning tale, and ling’ring jest, Perplex the fawning niece and pamper’d guest, While growing hopes scarce awe the gath’ring sneer, And scarce a legacy can bribe to hear; The watchful guests still hint the last offence, The daughter’s petulance, the son’s expense, Improve his heady rage with treach’rous skill, And mould his passions till they make his will.
Unnumber’d maladies his joints invade, Lay siege to life and press the dire blockade; But unextinguish’d Av’rice still remains, And dreaded losses aggravate his pains; He turns, with anxious heart and crippled hands, His bonds of debt, and mortgages of lands; Or views his coffers with suspicious eyes, Unlocks his gold, and counts it till he dies.
But grant, the virtues of a temp’rate prime Bless with an age exempt from scorn or crime; An age that melts in unperceiv’d decay, And glides in modest innocence away; Whose peaceful day Benevolence endears, Whose night congratulating Conscience cheers; The gen’ral fav’rite as the gen’ral friend: Such age there is, and who could wish its end?
Yet ev’n on this her load Misfortune flings, To press the weary minutes’ flagging wings: New sorrow rises as the day returns, A sister sickens, or a daughter mourns. Now kindred Merit fills the sable bier, Now lacerated Friendship claims a tear. Year chases year, decay pursues decay, Still drops some joy from with’ring life away; New forms arise, and diff’rent views engage, Superfluous lags the vet’ran on the stage, Till pitying Nature signs the last release, And bids afflicted worth retire to peace.
But few there are whom hours like these await, Who set unclouded in the gulfs of fate. From Lydia’s monarch should the search descend, By Solon caution’d to regard his end, In life’s last scene what prodigies surprise, Fears of the brave, and follies of the wise? From Marlb’rough’s eyes the streams of dotage flow, And Swift expires a driv’ler and a show.
The teeming mother, anxious for her race, Begs for each birth the fortune of a face: Yet Vane could tell what ills from beauty spring; And Sedley curs’d the form that pleas’d a king. Ye nymphs of rosy lips and radiant eyes, Whom Pleasure keeps too busy to be wise, Whom Joys with soft varieties invite, By day the frolic, and the dance by night, Who frown with vanity, who smile with art, And ask the latest fashion of the heart, What care, what rules your heedless charms shall save, Each nymph your rival, and each youth your slave? Against your fame with fondness hate combines, The rival batters and the lover mines. With distant voice neglected Virtue calls, Less heard and less, the faint remonstrance falls; Tir’d with contempt, she quits the slipp’ry reign, And Pride and Prudence take her seat in vain. In crowd at once, where none the pass defend, The harmless freedom, and the private friend. The guardians yield, by force superior plied; By Int’rest, Prudence; and by Flatt’ry, Pride. Now Beauty falls betray’d, despis’d, distress’d, And hissing Infamy proclaims the rest.
Where then shall Hope and Fear their objects find? Must dull Suspense corrupt the stagnant mind? Must helpless man, in ignorance sedate, Roll darkling down the torrent of his fate? Must no dislike alarm, no wishes rise, No cries attempt the mercies of the skies? Enquirer, cease, petitions yet remain, Which Heav’n may hear, nor deem religion vain. Still raise for good the supplicating voice, But leave to Heav’n the measure and the choice. Safe in his pow’r, whose eyes discern afar The secret ambush of a specious pray’r. Implore his aid, in his decisions rest, Secure whate’er he gives, he gives the best. Yet when the sense of sacred presence fires, And strong devotion to the skies aspires, Pour forth thy fervours for a healthful mind, Obedient passions, and a will resign’d; For love, which scarce collective man can fill; For patience, sov’reign o’er transmuted ill; For faith, that panting for a happier seat, Counts death kind Nature’s signal of retreat: These goods for man the laws of Heav’n ordain, These goods he grants, who grants the pow’r to gain; With these celestial wisdom calms the mind, And makes the happiness she does not find.

SALTER
I’ve nothing but admiration for Greene. In his case I took the trouble to read all his books since I knew very little about him, and that alone made it worth it. Afterwards he wrote me a number of letters mainly distinguished by their brevity, though they were cordial, and also by his signature, a more minuscule piece of handwriting than I have ever seen since. It was as if they were signed by a mere horizontal line. He had asked me if I was a journalist, I’m not sure if it was curiosity or incredulity. I said that no, like him, I was a writer and I’d written some novels. He told me to send him one, and I sent Light Years. He wrote back and said, I found your book to be very moving, and three pages of it are absolutely masterly. He cited the pages. I went immediately to the book. I turned to those pages and, for various reasons, because of the way the lines fell, and also the flavor of the text, it turned out that all three had a faintly Graham Greeneish tone to them.
But he was kind. He wanted to know if the book had been published in England. I said that no, it had been turned down by publishers there. He said, Has it been submitted to The Bodley Head? He had a close connection to them. I believe his brother was one of the directors of the house. Yes, I said, but The Bodley had turned it down. He said, What reason did they give? I said that they felt it would not make any money if they published it. He said, That’s no reason not to publish a book. Let me inquire. He arranged for them to publish it, which they did, and they had been right—but, of course, he was also.
