The bike trip (new pictures)
Tomasso, a 27 year old Sicilian man living in Milan. Tomasso had a deep love for and fitness enjoyed running often. He balanced his passion for health with his profession as a real estate broker. Alongside these interests, Tomasso had a deep passion for food and loved to cook. He often found himself exploring the culinary delights of his hometown, Milan, by frequenting nice restaurants.
Tumblr media
While Tomasso enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities on his holidays, he particularly loved indulging in hiking, skiing, and bike tours. However, despite being an Italian, he had never taken opportunity the to explore Tuscany. This was mainly due to the fact that his family hailed from Sicily, and his travels were often divided between Milan and his ancestral home or other destinations abroad.
One day, Tomasso stumbled upon a brochure advertising a four-week culinary trip through the enchanting region of Tuscany. The idea of visiting little villages, trying local delicacies, drinking good wine, and relaxing in beautiful hotels beneath the warm Tuscan sun sounded absolutely perfect to him. Determined to embark on this adventure, Tomasso began training for his trip. He dedicated one to two hours each day to wearing a heavy backpack, as well as participating in various fitness exercises to achieve the perfect summer body just in time for his holiday.
When the day finally arrived, Tomasso packed his car and embarked on a scenic drive to his first destination. Much to his delight, he was greeted at a stunning hotel with a glass of Prosecco and a delectable buffet of cured meats and cheeses. Overwhelmed by the abundance of food and the enticing free-flowing Prosecco, he indulged himself to the point of feeling a little tipsy. Just as he was about to retire to his room and rest for his trip, he received an unexpected call dinner for. Confused, as he thought he had already experienced dinner at the buffet, Tomasso found himself faced with even more extravagant dishes. A vitello tonato served as the starter, followed by a large plate of delicious and rich pasta. Just when he believed the pasta was the course main, a great roasted chicken appeared before him. Unable to resist, he ate until he was uncomfortably full. And to his surprise, a bottomless tiramisu was served for dessert. Despite his overflowing belly, he eagerly devoured a second plate. The night was filled with restless sleep due to the excessive indulgence.
The following day began with a sluggish feeling, which Tomasso attempted to shake off with a carb-loaded breakfast. He then set off on a two-hour bike ride to his first destination, a dairy farm. There, he tasted a variety of amazing cheeses, such as burrata and aged cheese, accompanied by rich artisanal bread and fruit fresh from the farm's garden. After another hour of cycling, he arrived at an olive grove, where he enjoyed a delightful olive oil tasting, followed by homemade pizzas. The final stop was a winery, where he indulged in a tasting of many excellent wines, paired with bread, cheeses, and meats. The overindulgence caused him to feel a little tipsy. Fortunately, the tour operator offered the use of a bus to transport the participants and their bikes back to the hotel, allowing Tomasso to enjoy several more glasses of wine. Once back at the hotel, he was met with yet another amazing antipasti buffet, accompanied by Prosecco, followed by a four-course dinner. Despite his attempts to exercise self-control, Tomasso succumbed to the temptation of all the delicious food before him.
Tumblr media
The ensuing days followed a similar routine with different locations. However, due to his excessive drinking at the winery, Tomasso found himself skipping the long bike rides. As the days went by, he couldn't help but notice aated blo feeling that never seemed to subside. His normal clothes began to feel uncomfortably tight, leaving him wondering how he had gained weight despite the long bike rides.
Tumblr media
By the halfway point of his trip, Tomasso noticed that his once-pronounced abs were now hidden beneath a layer of fat. Consequently, he started skipping even more bike rides, as they were often paired with alcohol-related activities. This pattern continued, and he found himself becoming gradually bigger and less active as the weeks progressed.
Tumblr media
By the end of the third and fourth weeks, Tomasso had practically discontinued any form of bike exercise, delegating the task to the tour guide. One day, while glancing at his reflection in the hotel mirror, he saw a full-blown belly staring back at him. Despite his growing size, he had no regrets. The tour had been an absolute blast, allowing him to immerse himself in the amazing specialties and cultural experiences of his own country.
Tumblr media
The rest of the summer, Tomasso enjoyed the bottles of wine and various foods he had taken home as souvenirs. Unfortunately, he remained quite inactive during this period. As September approached and he reached for his regular clothes, he realized that none of them fit anymore. He knew it was time to go on a diet.
The following summer, Tomasso decided to book another culinary tour, this time in Sicily. Four weeks of indulgence awaited him, followed by two weeks of visiting family. However, his body had not fully recovered from the previous year's excesses, and he had only managed to shed a few kilos. This time, the bike rides were even more infrequent, while the food intake increased exponentially. The visits to family members provided even less opportunity for physical activity, as Tomasso found himself overstuffed with his mother's and aunt's delicious meals. By the end the of holiday, he had gained even more weight than the previous year, leaving him to question when he would ever manage to lose the excess weight.

Most volcanoes and earthquakes occur at the intersection of plates of the earth’s crust. Aetna in Sicily and Vesuvius on the mainland are great examples of what happens when 3 plates meet.
Hawaii and Iceland are rare examples where there is a hole in the middle of a plate. Hawaii is near the centre of the Pacific plate and is formed from a single “hotspot “ that does not move.
However the plate is moving westward thus creating all these temporary islands
Tumblr media
There is still the possibility of Maui having an eruption.
For the Brits and Pipers in the group, Castle Rock in Edinburgh is also a volcanic remnant 350 million years old. It is hard dolerite unlike the soft clays here in Hawaii. Much of the Highlands are of similar origin.
Now the Na Pali view.
From the top among the clouds
Tumblr media
And now looking down (carefully!!) 5000 feet
Tumblr media
And another view
Tumblr media
Given the severe terrain, no roads or development was ever completed. The west side of the island is only accessible by foot and is a State Park.
There is a 22 mile shoreline hike and camping allowed by permit only. Wimps need not apply
She was so excited to start our adventure along the summit with poles in hand
Tumblr media
But came home with a dirty bum. The clay is super slippery when it rains all the time. I made sure not to push any buttons during the retreat
Tumblr media
This lighthouse on the north shore is located just before the road ends in Hanalei. Searched but could not find Puff.
Tumblr media
And the village…… beautiful and a lovely bay but pricey at $40 million for a cottage on the beach. It rains a lot here and the sea is rough in the winter. Summer is peak season for boat tours and exploring. Summer and Xmas is actually peak season for prices on Kauai…….thats why a Scot visits in February
Tumblr media
We explored an abandoned Club Med property from the 60s/70s in Hanalei and imagined the party times back then.
Tumblr media
Rapid growth has now obstructed the bay view
And finally back in her element, the 69 year old gramma fights with the local keke (children) for the best spots on the boogie board beach a short walk from our villa. She has made many friends among the other little people hoping for a good ride.

Ladder Beach is more than just a picturesque spot; it’s a testament to the powerful forces of nature and the intriguing history of Sicily.
Unique Geology: The cliffs are composed of marl, a soft, sedimentary rock formed from the accumulation of clay and calcium carbonate. Over centuries, wind and water erosion have sculpted these cliffs into their distinctive, layered formations, creating a truly awe-inspiring sight.
Historical Significance: The name “Scala dei Turchi” translates to “Staircase of the Turks,” referring to the Saracen pirates who used the cliffs as a lookout point during their raids in the 16th century. The beach’s history adds a layer of intrigue and mystery to its allure.

History of Ladder Beach
The history of Ladder Beach is intertwined with the turbulent past of Sicily. The island has been a battleground for various civilizations throughout the centuries, and the beach itself has witnessed its share of historical events.

The cliffs’ unique shape provided a natural vantage point, allowing the pirates to survey the coastline and identify potential targets.
Greek and Roman Influence: While the Saracen era left a significant mark on the beach’s name, evidence of earlier civilizations can also be found in the surrounding region. The area boasts ancient Greek and Roman ruins, hinting at a rich and complex history.

Porticello, Sicily

Setting the scene:

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Krystal’s great aunt Janet remembered a name: Emma Gioia. A quick search revealed the matching ship manifest for a vessel named Dante Alighieri (yes, that Dante) arriving in the United States on August 9, 1919 from S. Flavia. Krystal found the manifest while we were in Berlin, so we immediately knew that we had to spend some time rummaging through the archives in Santa Flavia. The privilege and opportunity to choose to walk the same path as our ancestors is never wasted on us. We deeply understand the importance of this work. In seeking, the Universe met us every step of the way. We called the Villa Edera home in the small fishing village of Porticello. An older gentleman brought a chair out to the street each morning with a half-smoked cigar and provided us ample opportunities to practice saying “Buongiorno.” It was the first time in a while that we truly felt like we were home.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On our first full day an organization called Pro Loco Santa Flavia was offering a free tour of the Punic Necropolis and ancient ruins of Solunto. The advertisement for the event said we would go “by car” to the sites...we definitely did not have a car. Krystal sent a message and organized a ride with the tour leader for the day and got the okay to use Google Translate to understand the tour. It was time to trust the Universe and it was the best decision we have ever made!
Upon arrival we met Antonella, David, and Rikard and our lives have been changed forever! Antonella is a brilliant archeologist, educator, and life-long resident of Porticello. Her knowledge of the history of Sicily and her kindness are a welcomed gift on this adventure. David and Rikard were fellow participants on the tour. Rikard has been the dentist in town for 30 years and David is his partner. They are from Sweden and England respectively, each speak several languages, and provided much support when Google Translate made up sentences. We started at the recently opened Punic Necropolis that dates from the Hellenistic period between the Greek and Roman rule (323 BC - 32 BC). In Sicily death is a part of life and crawling down into the tombs was a welcomed activity. Very hesitantly we ventured down the steps and also had a beautiful moment of cultural reckoning. Why is death so weird in the United States?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We hopped into the car with Antonella and sped up the mountain to the ancient Phoenician city of Solunto. Krystal’s DNA traces to the Levant area (present day Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq) and so do the Phoenicians, so, for context, we are talking about walking in some absolute ancient ancestral footsteps. There are no words for the complexity, beauty, and accessibility of the ruins. Antonella’s knowledge and storytelling brought the streets of this archaic city to life. While standing on the bluff overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, Antonella pointed to a rock outcrop and offered to take us out to the lighthouse if we had time after lunch. Absolutely!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At 16:00 we met up with Antonella in front of the Church of Saint Mary del Lume. Legend has it that the painting of the Madonna hanging in the church washed up in the surf and Madonna del Lume protects all of the fishermen of Porticello, Sicily’s second largest fishing port. We hopped into her little car and headed out on a tour of Punta Santa Nicolicchia, Caletta Sant'Elia, the recently community-restored Madonna Del Lume, and a gorgeous cliff-side walk out to the Capo Zafferano Lighthouse. To meet someone who loves a place and to have the opportunity to see through their eyes for a brief moment is truly the greatest gift of being alive. We went to sleep absolutely in love with this part of the world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You may recall from our time in Palermo the works of artist Tutto e Niente. They surrounded our walks through the Ballarò and to our absolute joy the works also adorned our days in Porticello and our walks through Santa Flavia. The group of girls peering into the distance was just down the street from our home and the work adorns the door of an old cobbler shop. The red shoe somehow tells us that there’s no place like home. Just up the street stands an abandoned building steadily holding the name “Orfanotrofio Pezzillo.” Family legend paired with the ship manifest indicated that Emma Gioia, Krystal’s great grandmother, may have spent some of her days in this very building. Directly across the street rests a Piaggio with another incredible painting by our favorite street artist. We are including the post that goes with this work for your contemplation:
“La sua ape con cui fa sbarazzi e si vusca u pane! se sei perso puoi trovare nuove direzioni...sai cosa vuol dire resistere e soffrire? È facile parlare di vivere e morire!vivo per sta robba, vuoi comprende il motivo? Manca ossigeno al cervello solo se non dipingo...tengo in testa l'obbiettivo dedico la vita a lei unico motivo.”
“If you get lost you can find new directions...do you know what it means to resist and suffer? It's easy to talk about living and dying! I live for this stuff, do you know why? My brain lacks oxygen without painting...goal in mind dedicate my life to her only reason.”
Krystal sent fan mail, because we really, truly were moved by the work. We received a response and look forward to connecting in the future.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Antonella invited us on one more adventure. She teaches in Palermo and had a little time to take us up to see Santuario di Santa Rosalia on, or in, Mount Pellegrino. The bones of Santa Rosalia were found in the cave in 1624 and shortly after their discovery a plague ravaging the area subsided. Every year the people of Palermo make a pilgrimage up the mountain to make offerings to Santa Rosalia. The view of Palermo from the mountain is stunning and the church itself is set inside of a cave. We finished off the day with a multo buono lunch of polpette alla acciughe (anchovy meatballs), pasta al pesce spada (pasta with swordfish), insalata di bollito (salad of boiled meat and anchovies), and caponata di melanzane (eggplant magic sauce) at Trattoria Bersagliere in the Ballarò.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We wanted to make sure we gave the local produce, butcher, and bakery in Porticello a shout out. Even the tiny grocery store had everything we could dream of. Our days were filled with oyster mushrooms the size of our head, the best tomatoes we have ever eaten, and so many incredible oranges! In fact, we learned that there are so many varieties of oranges in Sicily you get to choose if you want sweet, sour, for juicing, for eating. Who knew the world of oranges could be so delicious and varied?
Tumblr media
Bagheria was historically home to many villas outside of the city of Palermo. Many of them are still standing and you can go check them out. Bagheria is also a quick walk up the street from Porticello or a 2 minute train ride. We learned after a few days that the train isn’t really worth the trouble and our feet got us there just fine. When Mary found the Villa Palagonia, known as the Villa of Monsters, we had to go. A cash only entrance fee that rivaled some of the incredible museums in Palermo ushered us into a ramshackled old villa adorned with an absolute ton of really creepy statues.
Tumblr media
Some of our days were filled with drinks at the local bar Tosto Chiosco with our dear new friends David and Rikard. We had the fortune of meeting many of the incredible folks from the area. We had another absolutely stunning meal at Trattoria Buttitta in Bagheria where we learned that home-brewed limoncello will absolutely send you flying into another dimension! On our final night, dear Antonella made us all the best home-cooked Sicilian meal! We joined her at her home for pasta al forno (pasta from the oven - only this was an absolute labor of love that hit Krystal deep in her bones. Her family would make a similar dish with Velveeta cheese and canned tomatoes when she was a kid, but this, this was otherworldly!), involtini (a magical roll of meat stuffed with a melody of incredible ingredients), insalata di finocchi e arance (fennel, orange, and anchovy salad), and home-made tiramisu that was - wow, just wow. We washed it all down with Sicilian red wine and amaro del mare. Grazie mille to Antonella for cooking all night and blessing us with leftovers for our travels. Grazie mille to our friends in Porticello. We are already plotting our return and we will be there before anyone notices we have left. Grazie mille to Krystal’s ancestors who left just enough of a paper trail to be found.
