A strategy to reintroduce plains bison to Banff National Park is being called a success by Parks Canada, which says there is massive support for the initiative. In its latest report, the agency says it spoke with dozens of stakeholders, including Indigenous peoples and members of the public during a month-long engagement process. "Overall, feedback indicates the pilot was a success and there is a strong support for bison to remain on the landscape, with variations in what that may look like in the future," the agency wrote in its summary report. Parks Canada says the different themes that came up during that process include the sustainable management of the herd, collaboration with partners to maintain the animals' population and keeping up with the spiritual importance of bison to Indigenous people. "Most of the commenters further explained that opportunities for traditional harvesting by Indigenous peoples was why they would support this approach," Parks Canada said. [...]

This is no way to treat my drawing hand! ✋🏻
We were camping at Scotch Creek British Columbia this weekend, our first trip of the year and it was fantastic. No bugs, yet. I did mess up my hand a few times, but still managed to do about a dozen pencils for The mutant Epoch Expansion Rules book, and ride bikes, eat smokies and drink cider.

"All the land and hunting grounds were looked upon as tribal property, all parts of which were open to every member of the tribe. Of course, every band had its common recognized hunting, trapping and fishing places, but members of other bands were allowed to use them whenever they desired."
"All individuals who were born into a Nation, or who had ancestors from that Nation, were allowed to fish for salmon and other fish on the fishing grounds of that Nation. This extended to resource access on the basis of intermarriage."
"If [...] a person who was not related to a Thompson Indian were caught hunting trapping or gathering bark or roots, within the recognized limits of the tribal territory, he was liable to forfeit his life."
"[T]his insistence on exclusive control over hunting grounds by a smaller group within the nation coexisted with the Northern Secwépemc’s adoption of a clan and crest system imported from the coastal tribe [...]"
from Secwepemc People and Plants: Research Papers in Shuswap Ethnobotany (pg 43-45)
Only quoting this one book, but this is how the concept of private property goes in other cultures, over and over and over again. Resources (including a place to live) are restricted to smaller and smaller groups of people related by blood and/ or culture. And so, to widen the range of available resources, you force the next generations into binding relationships with each other. Not too hard to see how chiefs turned into landlords, how people become the property of their parents, how nations split and new ones form, how the closure of the commons came about. There’s a snowball effect.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
aka "Orange Shirt Day" and, sometimes simply, "T&R Day"
For those of you who are not familiar with the “National Day for Truth and Reconciliation” or simply “Orange Shirt Day” - it is a yearly observance day held on September 30th as the day to recognize the genocidally destructive impact of the residential school systems have had on the lives and cultures of the indigenous peoples.
Initially begun in 2013 by author/activist Phyllis Jack Webstad - a member of Northern Secwepemc (Shuswap) of the Stswecem'c Xgat'tem First Nation (formerly known as Canoe CreekBand/Dog Creek Indian Band) tribe of the Fraser Canyon-Cariboo region of British Columbia - this day of observance eventually achieved statutory holiday status within Canada in 2021.
Why is it sometimes referred to as "Orange Shirt Day”? When Webstad spoke of her experiences as a child within the residential school system, she shared a story about her first day at school. Excited about going to a new school and eager to make a good first impression, Webstad gone shopping for new clothes with her Grandmother. There was an Orange shirt that she saw that she liked - her Grandmother bought it for her.
When she got to school with her new clothes - she found herself at the mercy of a residential school system that had no mercy to give. All of her new clothing? Removed and replaced in favor of pre-selected mandatory uniforms. The loss of the bright Orange shirt upset her. According to Webstad, she never saw it or any of her clothes again.
The basic purpose of the residential school system was brutally simple: forced assimilation by requiring that all children be made to abandon any semblances of their indigenous identities in favor of mandatory caucasian outlook. Their clothes, culture, hair, and language - all strictly forbidden.
What's the purpose of all this? Simple, First Nations tribes were here long before the first "white colonizers" began to arrive from Europe. Before long, colonizers quickly achieved the upper hand by routine gradual systemic elimination of indigenous tribes. Although they were a variation on an old theme, the schools were very much part and parcel of this multi-front process.
As stated earlier - they were attacking First Nations existence and sovereignty by aiming squarely at the younger generations through forced assimilation. While "assimilation" may have been the stated goal - what happened was much worse: many were openly attacked and brutalized simply for being while a great many others simply "disappeared". Records were spotty and much of the evidence was either ignored, altered, or disposed of. Those that survived this system were forced to submit and accept. Some have begun to speak out.
The “orange shirt” that Webstad spoke of? It became the chosen symbol of this new movement. Although it began in Canada - it has found acceptance in the United States and other places as well.
The simple message of the “Orange Shirt Day” is that “Every Child Matters” - it is an indictment of a system in which many of the children trapped within its’ reach were simply deemed “disposable” and were all-too frequently “disappeared” - never to be seen or heard from again. Those who survived the system were indelibly marked by their shared experiences which left many of them unable to cope. Their stories have only begun to be heard and understood by the outside world at large.

Apr 27, 2019 | Turtle Valley residents rally against being 'Kamloops' toilet' [Link]
"We're pissed that a municipality has no regard for their waste," says spokesperson Connie Seaward. "For them to say that our community needs to be responsible about our waste as well. Our community in 100 years couldn't produce half a tonne of biosolids, so for 35,000 tonnes to come to Turtle Valley and be spread three feet deep on 31 hectares is crazy."
Arrow was awarded a $4.4 million, two-year biosolids management contract back in December to deal with the 12,500 tonnes that are produced in Kamloops annually, as well as the 23,000 tonnes of stockpiled biosolids.
In partnership with the Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band, the original plan was to haul the biosolids to Talking Rock Golf Course, but that idea has been postponed. For now, the bison ranch will be where the city's biosolids are spread and many Turtle Valley residents only found out at a community meeting on March 24.
"The method that they're using to deal with it is 100 per cent inappropriate," says Harrison Seaward. "They're spending a bunch of extra time and money to haul it further away from Kamloops because Kamloops doesn't want it and putting it in somebody else's backyard, and not only on a field, but on a side hill by a lake and creek that flows down into the Shuswap River."
The biggest concern of biosolids opposition is the level of contamination that can be present in human waste, even after it’s treated. The province's Organic Matter Recycling Regulation has testing guidelines for certain substances, like arsenic, lead and mercury; but some in the scientific community say that's just the tip of the iceberg for potential contaminants.
"We're not trying to scare anyone, we're trying to wake people up," says Maureen Penunuri-Yepiz, a resident of Turtle Valley for the last 12 years. "This is real. If someone dumped their septic tank in your front yard, you'd be pretty upset too."
Not all protestors were from Turtle Valley either. They also got support from residents of Barnhartvale and Merritt, communities that have previously fought to keep biosolids away from their land.
They pointed to nations like Switzerland and Netherlands that banned the use of biosolids for agricultural purposes in the 2000s, back when the matter was still referred to as sludge.
"It doesn't belong on agricultural land," says Connie. "This is a municipality’s problem and I think we need to be greener and more sustainable and figure out something that isn't polluting where we live."
Connie says the City of Kamloops has "slammed the doors in their face," noting they haven't been able to get a delegation to speak in front of council (they're in the midst of a two-week break, with the next council meeting coming May 7) and no members have taken them up on their offer to attend Turtle Valley's weekly community meetings.

All want to be understood few wish to understand
The grim truth about the News in Canada is that Canadians, need to know more about about Brexit, what US Congress is up to and what did Dinky Donnie do today, than they do the Indigenous reality in Canada.
Now It’s Election Time in Canada. You'll hear all the Politicians debating the “Major Issues”. You may hear the occasional First Nations, Inuit and Métis “Issues”discussed. The issue will be seen in relation to pipelines and howIndigenous Rights affect business interests. Very little will be said about rights to safe drinking water, decent housing, missing First Nations women, education, healthy diet or even human rights.
We’ll receive news about Human Rights elsewhere, Hong Kong or North Korea. As far as Fires in Brazil it’s all about the environment world wide. Who the fuck do we think live in the burned down world heritage rain forests all worry about? It is their whole world right now and in living color. Their “rights” conflict with business interests, but far less would be said if only the indigenous inhabitants were affected
Try not to be like the Political shills running in this election.Take time to learn what it means to be an “issue”. Don’t set a time limit, keep learning.
In 2016, 1.6 million people identified as Indigenous in Canada. The issues aren't abstract. Start to learn what first nations think their “issues” are. Start to understand by knowing who. Take some time and seek information on your own. Search names, find places, find out about these lives as they are. No need to think you have to understand by Election Day 2019.
Please seek the truth for yourself. Sometimes we need labels to understand. Here is a list of first nations in Canada. Knowledge is the power behind change. Use the internet and libraries. You can even contact band offices for information. Please learn, few understand the First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities of Canada.
The list is not comprehensive, it does provide insight into the indigenous societies, and cultural ties in Canada. Start anywhere and ask questions for yourself.

Classes start this week at Purcell Collegiate School (PCS), an international boarding school in B.C.'s southeast.
The first cohort of 12 students from across Canada, and countries like Japan and China, are living in a former residential school in the Aq'am community, within the Ktunaxa Nation.
The building, St. Eugene Mission, was a residential school from 1912 until 1970.
In 1992, the community began the process of turning the building into a resort, and today it's an award-winning hotel, golf course and casino that is owned by the Ktunaxa Nation and Shuswap Indian Band.
Now, a portion of it is also home to international students while they live and learn in the community.

The BC PNP’s Entrepreneur Regional Pilot program was introduced in March this year, with a goal of attracting experienced entrepreneurs to establish a new business.
For all the Foreign entrepreneurs who want to set up their business in rural British Columbia, here’s good news for you. The British Columbia has added 8 more communities to the eligible list for the Entrepreneur Immigration Regional Pilot Program.
The BC PNP’s Entrepreneur Regional Pilot program was introduced in March this year, with a goal of attracting experienced entrepreneurs to establish a new business and creating new jobs in smaller communities within the province. Communities that have lesser than 75,000 people and are located at least 30 kilometers away from the nearest urban center have been participating in this program.
With the addition of 8 new communities to the list, the number of participating communities has reached 66. Here is the list of communities that have been added to this program:
Parksville
Canal Flats
Radium Hot Springs
Invermere
Akisqnuk First Nation
Regional District of East Kootenay (Area F and G)
Peachland
Shuswap Indian Band
To participate in this program, the communities must prove that they can offer eligible entrepreneurs a network of business and settlement agencies. Community representatives must attend immigration training and pilot-specific programs to host exploratory visits for interested applicants.
Who can apply? To apply for the Entrepreneur Regional Pilot program, the applicants need to create a profile with the BC PNP, which will include their work experience, language eligibility, investment requirement, and a business proposal that would create at least one full-time job for a Canadian permanent resident. The applicant must complete an exploratory visit to the community they wish to set up their business. They are also required to submit a viable business proposal to the community representative and meeting with a program representative so that they receive a referral from the community representative.
The net worth required for the Regional Pilot Program is lesser than other Entrepreneur programs.
Eligibility criteria
To be eligible to participate in the program, the applicant must meet the following criteria:
Applicant must make an of minimum $100,000 in eligible business in the community
Should have a net worth of a minimum $300,000
Should have business experience of 3 years or at least 4 years as a Senior Manager in the last 5 years
Should be able to create one job for a Canadian PR or citizen
Meet other eligibility criteria of the program
Once the registration process is complete, applicants will receive a score and candidates with the highest scores will receive an invitation through regularly held invitation rounds.

July 10 2019 | Salmon, once abundant up the entire Columbia River system, have been blocked from their traditional migration routes for 80 years since the introduction of dams to the system downstream in Washington State. The loss of the salmon run devastated Indigenous communities upstream that relied on the fish as a food source and cultural touchstone.
“This was the essence of our culture and life that kept us healthy, not only physically but was the bond of our communities,” said Shuswap Indian Band Chief Barb Cote. “Today we have a duty to make sure the waters are healthy, so when the salmon return they will be able to reproduce and give us the sustenance that is crucial to our future generations.”

The Lower East Adams Lake wildfire, burning 21 kilometres north of Chase, B.C., on the east side of Adams Lake, more than doubled is size in the space of a few hours on Saturday.
As of 9:30 p.m. Saturday, the size of the wildfire was listed at 724 hectares, compared to 320 hectares at around 3 p.m. the same day.
The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) says the wildfire continues to grow, primarily towards the north flank, which is away from populated areas under evacuation alert.
There are still 92 properties in the CSRD on evacuation alert, as well as one property in the Thompson Nicola Regional District and properties in the jurisdiction of the Adams Lake Indian Band.
BC Wildfire Service says this fire is burning in steep terrain, which has made accessibility a challenge and poses a risk to the safety of ground responders. [...]
