Guide to GARO: Reintroduction
Approximately 4 years ago, I initiated a series of posts introducing every aspect of the GARO Franchise (all under the GARO tag here) and have endeavoured to keep these up over the years over some 30-40 posts. However, the first major media development since then has recently finished, and while I have already covered it, I felt updating the Introductory post was prudent, and will cover the basics and breakdown the franchise.
The Basics
"Where there is light, shadows lurk and fear reigns. But by the blade of Knights, mankind was given hope."
In the world of GARO exists HORRORS, demonic entities from the Makai Realm, which consume humans, and can possess those who do all to darkness. When possessing a human a Horror can only be identified by the reaction of it's eyes to a Madou Flame. The only thing stopping the Horrors are the Makai Order.
The greatest opposition comes in the for of the Makai Knights, warriors who fight with weapons and magical, wolf-shaped armour made of mystical Soul Metal, the armour summoned by creating circles of light with their weapons which the armour emerges from. The most revered, and commonly considered the strongest Knight is the Golden Knight GARO. While the Knights focused on in a series are normally titles Knights with a unique armour, many Knights are without title and possess a generic armour. An Armour and Title will typically be passed down from father to son, or master to student. Due either to a law or some other factor, women may not be Makai Knights
The other main opponents to the Horrors are the Makai Priests, who rely on spells either using their Madou Brushes or other magical items. Due to lacking armour, in combat Makai Priests may sometimes have to rely on magical familiars, or specialised Madou Tools created by subjugating Horrors.
Some titled Makai Knights are partnered with special Madougu, sentient jewelry acting as avatars for benign Horrors to communicate with a Makai Knight they are contracted to, offering insights on the Horrors they fight or helping detect their activities, GARO's eternal partner is the Madou Ring, Zaruba, the only character to have definitively appeared in live action and animation. The prevalence of Madougu partners varies wildly by era, being almost universal among titled Titles Knights at some points, and virtually unheard of in others.
Certain Makai Knights can, after sealing 100 Horrors, be given a challenge the completion of which allows them the use of a Madou Horse associates with their armour.
Dependent on the era, Makai Order members act in their own volition, under the guidance in senior Makai Priests, or under the auspices of Watchdogs who oversee activity within a territory.
A common but not universal feature of the franchise are Dark Makai Knights, who have fallen to darkness in some way. This has been done in so many different ways I won't go into it. Dark Makai Priests have also appeared, but are less common. Another common feature is acquiring a special transformation for the final battle that is typically seen as a one-off.
Rather than list every entry in release order, I will be breaking my introductions into eras, some of which can be further divided. In essence though, there are 2 distinct eras, plus a few extra, and the anime.

Lady Snowblood.
Alternative: 修羅雪姫 ; Princess Snowblood ; Shura Yukihime
Description : What is Lady Snowblood about? Vengeance. Pure and simple, this is a revenge story. Yuki was named as a child of hell by her mother. Yuki's father was killed by a group of men who conspired to use him to start an uprising; they then brutalized her mother. Her mother subsequently killed one of her attackers and ended up in jail, where Yuki is born. Yuki's mother was serving a life sentence; there was no way she could escape and continue her revenge. Consequently, she concocted a plan which included seducing the guards in order to produce a child who could pass beyond the prison walls. Dying in childbirth, Yuki's mother impresses upon a friend the importance of imparting to her infant daughter the necessity of her revenge--the grudge that she could no longer carry, but which she passed to her daughter. The friend agrees to do so, and Yuki ('snow,' so named for her snow-white skin) is trained to become the instrument of her mother's vengenace. Twenty years later, Yuki is a skilled assassin. For the price of 1,000 yen she will perform murderous miracles, often proceeding through trickery, deceit, and the assumption that as a woman she poses as little threat to the criminals she is often dispatching. #MangaReddit.com, #ReadFreeMangaOnline Read Free Manga Online at MangaReddit.com: https://mangareddit.com/p/lady-snowblood_1584426730.html

Lady Snowblood is now possibly my favorite pulp film, and this is coming from a fan of Quentin Tarantino. Kill Bill was actually inspired/based off of this film. And as I much as I liked that film and the director, Lady Snowblood and Toshiya Fujita's techniques are so much better. P.S. I have no idea how to read or write Kanji, aka Chinese.
The story is of a woman who was wronged. And while she is in jail, she gives birth to Oyuki so that she may live and carry out her mother's revenge. The flashbacks are very interestingly done, and it's a constant reminder of Oyuki's purpose. She is not a woman, but simply a child of hell, as she is often called in the movie. I really liked this detail in the movie, as compared to the original manga, where she was a woman who is bent on revenge, she is instead a force of revenge. There are only trace amounts of humanity left.
I did have an issue with the first revenge killing because it was actually the last death in the manga. It was the most anti-climatic of all the deaths because he was the only one who actually was sincere [or at least in the manga he was] about his actions and wanted forgiveness. And when he was killed, it was a statement that revenge is revenge no matter what. In the movie, it was like eh. First one down. Moving on to the more interesting ones. //that and the stupid sub-plot with his daughter
Special effects are cheesy. But it was the style and capabilities of the time. And the story was modified from the original manga, but I feel it was satisfying overall. I was at first upset about the change in the writer because he turned from an old fart to a younger man, and there were some moments of potential love interest going on for Oyuki, the main character, but thankfully, the focus was still on revenge.
And oh God, let me talk about the mis-en-scene in this movie. It's fucking BEAUTIFUL. The camera does get shaky at times, but they're few and often during action shots when the camera angle moves quickly. The doors, the walls, the landscape, the cliff. Dutch angles are used a bit too much to my liking, but there are some magnificent moments with them. Take for example this one. The camera angle is tilted so much, and yet the characters feel like they're almost sitting straight up. And though one is sitting, you feel as though they are almost equals. Almost though! Notice how the man on the right is still higher and looking down on the one of the left. The door frames perfectly the seat of the rick shaw and the single man, while the door covers the other. The architecture of the house is wonderfully geometric, breaking up everything into small boxes.
I could literally go on about this movie. Just go and watch it for yourself.
