10/10 chapter but the translation was really triggering me this time. It really bothers me when mistranslations are released into the wild because most people don't know any better and just trust the "expert" because they don't know Japanese, but the scanlator must be right because they know Japanese... right? Misinformation travels fast, but the truth travels slow.

Even the original scanlator who worked on the first series made a ton of mistakes, including a really bad one where she mistranslated Ikuto's year in chapter 28. I didn't realize it until Kodansha USA released their version and I started to learn more Japanese. Then I started to notice so many mistranslations in the series!

Alright Shugo Chara! Jewel Joker chapter 8:

I honestly so do not care about Ikuto finally showing up for real and the whole Amu x Ikuto reunion, I am already so over their relationship. But I like the identity theft storyline so far, what's up with blonde Ikuto? Is he like an evil clone? a secret twin brother? I mean it's obviously something to do with Yoru, but even with Yoru the tranformation wouldn't look exactly like a blonde Ikuto if the person behind it didn't already look like him, right? We already know that from Amu/Utau.

Also the whole explanaition on why he is able to go to school there when there isn't a high school division yet sounds super stupid, like does he then even have classes if he is the only student?? I will accept the explanaition, if it means Utau will show up more.

The little Ikuto & Tadase beef was a bit funny, not too into them fighting over Amu again, but I do love Tadase being all polite while also being a little shit. (Also Tadase, bestie, you have your own cat boy now, why not focus on that?)

So then the rest of the chapter was basically just Amuto, whatever, I was waiting for Utau to show up after she got mentioned, but I will have to wait :(

The white cat finally appears!

For those who didnt catch on, jewel joker is heavily inspired by Alice's through the looking glass, and if you haven't read it, (which you should alice beefs with humpty-dumpty its so funny), the story starts and concludes with alice's two black and white kittens (the black kitten being the mischievous one and the white kitten being obedient and docile), with the black kitten specifically playing a major role in influencing alice's dream.

Ikuto clearly represents the black kitten in the story, which left me wondering the identity of the white cat. my first guess was w niya ofc but the calico and blue hair didn't sit right with me, nor did tadase after niyatada happens and gets given the white cat role by niya (he's also clearly the kind white knight stand-in). So when mirage lynx makes his second appearance and peach-pit yet again left him without any black shading is when i was certain that he's both niya and the white cat ive been waiting for! for whatever is in store we'll just have to wait and see.

I don't know why Ikuto keeps appearing like this in Amu's fantasies, when in reality he was fucking miserable being forced to work for Easter. Amu's a pervert.

Thinking about the implications of the Arc Eggs in Shugo Chara!... If the Hearts Eggs are the wishes of a child distilled to their purest, and X-Eggs are a corrupted dream that takes that idea of innocent passion and pushes it to self hatred and giving up, what does that mean for an artificially manufactured egg? We've SEEN one of those before, albeit on a far smaller scale, with Ikuto and the Black egg, and I would argue that it represented a caging responsibility of a dream for the Company, rather than Ikuto himself.

I think the Arc Eggs may honestly not be far from that idea on a far larger scale.

This is a middle school. Young children are encouraged to express themselves and chase dreams and believe in themselves, but middle grades are when a LOT of the pressures- both internal and external- really start to ramp up.

All of the other kinds of eggs in this series* have been a metaphorical representation, and the Arc Eggs most definitely follow suit.

The students at Arcana Academy are HANDED eggs because they’ve been GIVEN someone else’s dreams- as starts being apparent in middle grade kids. They are disheartened when they can’t live up to the potential that parents or teachers or otherwise influential figures placed on them, and the dream goes sour.

No wonder there are so many X-Egg reports, and no wonder Amu couldn't cleanse that X-Egg. Her method relies on reminding people what their dreams are in the first place, but if these AREN’T their real dreams and if they don’t know who they’re supposed to be WITHOUT the dream that has been given to them, what is she meant to be convincing them?

This whole storyline of gamifying the act of living out artificial dreams is so bleak, and I'm so excited to see how things play out!

(*As much as I love the anime, the question mark eggs feel out of place in the metaphor. Because YES, you can be confused or obsessive over a dream and it can drive you to obsession and one-track mind-ism that is unhealthy, but the active mechanics of the ?eggs are far more convoluted than the other depictions we see in the story so it's hard to bring them up in this kind of conversation)
