Federal Government Plans Military Hardware Production at Ajaokuta Steel Mill, Says Minister
The Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Audu, announced on Monday that the Federal Government is set to initiate the production of military hardware at the Ajaokuta Steel Mill. The long-standing steel complex, built over 40 years ago, has faced mismanagement by successive governments, hindering its full functionality. Minister Audu revealed that he has collaborated with counterparts in the Ministries of Defence and Works to strategize the revival of the steel plant. In addition to restarting the light steel mill to produce iron rods, the government aims to equip Ajaokuta with capabilities to manufacture military hardware, including helmets, bullets, vests, pads for tanks, rifles, and ammunitions. The Ajaokuta Steel Mill, a massive project plagued by years of dormancy, is now a focal point for the current administration's commitment to industrial revitalisation. Minister Audu estimated the overall revamp cost at two to five billion dollars, with the light steel mill section requiring approximately N35 billion. President Bola Tinubu reportedly approved local fundraising efforts to revive the light steel mill section, emphasizing an investment of N35 billion. This infusion is anticipated to yield 50,000 tons of iron rods initially, with the potential to increase production capacity to 400,000 tons. The minister identified a lack of political will as a major impediment to the Ajaokuta Steel Mill's functionality over the past four decades. He emphasized that President Tinubu's establishment of a dedicated Steel Ministry signifies a historic step, acknowledging the ministry's pivotal role in the country's industrial revolution. Furthermore, Minister Audu disclosed the termination of the last concession agreement with Global Steel, leading to a financial settlement of approximately $496 million by the Nigerian government. He cited previous challenges, including concessionaires lacking the necessary skills, contributing to the prolonged inactivity of the steel complex. The government's renewed commitment to Ajaokuta Steel Mill aligns with broader efforts to bolster industrial capabilities and harness the potential of the steel sector for economic development. By • Olalekan Fagbade Forthcoming Guber Poll : “We’ve a good candidate, eschew violence” – Governor tells APC supporters Kogi’s Gov. Yahaya Bello on Saturday admonished supporters of his All Progressive Congress (APC) to eschew violence as the party has a good candidate in Usman Ododo for the Nov. 11 governorship election. Bello gave the charge in Kabba at the party’s campaign rally where he said the APC and Ododo would win the election with the support of God. “Don’t abuse anybody in this race because we have a good gubernatorial candidate in Usman Ododo, who by God’s grace shall win the Nov. 11 election. “All that matters to us as APC members and supporters is how to market Ododo and his running mate for victory at the poll. “We’re entrusting the future of Kogi in the hands of Ododo and his running mate and so we should be very ready to deliver them on the day of election. “We are after the growth and development of Kogi and will ensure that APC wins the election for continuity and consolidation on my achievements,’’ Gov. Bello said. He charged that violence and crisis would not do anyone any good and enjoined APC members and supporters to be peaceful in their conduct for a successful election. “Let us disappoint our enemies and opponents by our calmness and maturity which will also neutralise their hostility against us,’’ he admonished. Bello tasked security agencies to be professional in the performance of their duties to keep the peace in Kogi before, during and after the governorship election. Chairman of the Ododo Campaign Council, the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar-Audu, addressed the rally earlier. He urged the people of Kabba and the entire Kogi West Senatorial District to turn out en-masse and vote for Ododo for continuity. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the rally witnessed the receipt of defectors from opposition parties including those of African Democratic Party (ADC) (NAN) #WeveagoodcandidateeschewviolenceGovernortellsAPCsupporters

Bandits commanders agree to suspend attacks in Zamfara
Tumblr media
After a meeting with security officials in Birnin-Magaji Local Government Area of Zamfara state on Friday Bandits commanders agreed to suspend attacks on the people. The bandits also said that the coast is now clear for all those displaced by the attacks to return home. The agreement was reached at the palace of the Emir of Birnin-Magaji. Present at the meeting were the state Commissioner of Police, bandits commanders, leaders of Fulani, Civilian Joint Task Force and local vigilantes known as “Yansakai”. The meeting, chaired by Police Commissioner Usman Nagogo, was also attended by Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Security Matters, Abubakar Dauran and National leaders of Miyetti-Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN). The bandits’ commanders at the meeting were: Ardo Nashawari, Audu Karki and Muhammad Bello, while the leaders of civilian JTF and vigilantes were Malam Garba Nasarawa-Godal and Alhaji Shuaibu Aliyu. Speaking on behalf of the bandits, Nashawari, said with the suspension of the attacks, farmers were now free to return to their farms and other residents free to go about their normal businesses. Nashawari added, “We believe with this dialogue, the Fulani can now go to markets, they can move freely without any hitch.” The Civilian JTF leader, Alhaji Shuaibu Aliyu, urged the government to ensure immediate disarming of the bandits. “On behalf of the entire members of Civilian JTF and Vigilance Group Birnin-Magaji Local Government Area, we commend the state government for this dialogue, we abide by it,” he said. On his part, the commissioner of police described the meeting as “fruitful” and restated the commitment of the command to rid the state of banditry, kidnapping and other crimes. “We are impressed with the comments of the warring factions, both of them have accepted the dialogue”, Nagogo said. The National President of MACBAN, Alhaji Ardo Kiruwa, described the dialogue as “succeeding”, noting that most of the markets that were hitherto closed due to insecurity, have been opened. “We were told that the Fulani were seen in Shinkafi market yesterday”, he added. Kiruwa called on the Fulani to cooperate with government and security agencies in order to maintain peace and stability in the state. Also, Dauran, the special adviser on security, thanked the people of the state for their support and cooperation toward ensuring that the dialogue succeeded. He cautioned against politicising the state government’s efforts at tackling the security challenges in the state. “We are aware that some people are using politics to challenge the government’s efforts in this regard”, he noted. The Emir of Birnin-Magaji, Alhaji Hussaini Maude-Dan’Ali, thanked the state government for initiating the dialogue and urged all parties to adhere to all the agreements reached during the dialogue. “We are happy with the outcome of this meeting, we are going to continue to support government towards ensuring the success of this dialogue”, the emir said.
