Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’s casting director opens up about casting Sharmin Segal in the web-series; says, “Casting is purely done based on the script and the director’s vision.”
After the release of the magnum opus, the show received rave reviews but Sharmin Segal experienced extreme criticism for her acting chops, especially in emotional sequences where audiences criticised her for maintaining the ‘same expressions’ throughout the show, further accusing Sanjay Leela Bhansali of nepotism since Sharmin is his niece.
Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar featuring an ensemble female lead cast revolves around the lives of courtesans set in the pre-Independence era. While the show received love from audiences, many social media users also shared memes and reels criticising Sharmin’s acting, who played the youngest daughter Alamzeb of Mallikajaan aka Manisha Koirala. Addressing the same, the casting director of the show Shruti Mahajan insisted that the casting process was done after much consideration.
In a conversation with India Today, Shruti Mahajan opened up about the casting process saying, “Casting is purely done based on the script and the director's vision. We only want actors who can enhance the project. And ultimately, it all boils down to what the audience expects from that project.”
Touching upon the topic about Sharmin Segal being extensively trolled for her acting where many even referred to it as ‘expressionless’, Shruti shared, “You cannot take things like this personally. You can't please everyone. Also, given the field that we are in, there are all kinds of feedback. One has to take it all with a pinch of salt and move on.”

In the Blink of an Eye
A brief moment exists between the state of wakefulness and sleep, and also before waking up of untethered, blurred, tumbling thoughts capable to us humans. These states are scientifically defined as hypnagogic - a state immediately before falling asleep, and hypnopompic - a state leading to consciousness or being awake. The two states are different in character; the former slips us through an imaginary, fantasised and unconscious moment before drifting into sleep. It is a non-governed state of an individual shutting the brain, dissolving mental filters and slowly dismantling the concepts of the world. All of our models, norms and ideas of a constrained world pull apart its meaning in the slightest of dizzy recalling. The latter state brings us closer to the reality. It is a state of steadily reaching consciousness when we begin to realise the self, things and people, place and the surroundings.
Comparatively, the state of alertness is subjective to human recollection. How do we make sense of reality, then? Does the past mean anything to us in relation to thinking of the future – while in the present? In the Blink of an Eye considers the states of transcending into sleep and being awake as a metaphor to reflect on time as extended, indefinite and an inconsecutive happening, event, and passage. Each artist featured in this exhibition explores the human state of being in the process of transition between reality and the unfamiliar, through their artistic practice and approaches.

Evolution of the Banking System: All You Need to Know
This article on 'Evolution of the Banking System: All You Need to Know' was written by Shruti Korgaonkar, an intern at Legal Upanishad.
Introduction
Banking is one of the oldest industries in the world. They are regarded as the foundation of a developed economy. The financial infrastructure required for thriving economies is provided by sound financial systems, which are at the forefront of technological development. Since the days of the commodities banks, banking has undergone a substantial transformation, and contemporary financial organisations are constantly evolving to address the most challenging problems. The banking system prevailed before the invention of money, the history of banking and the history of money is intimately intertwined. Grain was the primary material found in deposits at first, followed by other products like cattle, farm equipment, and eventually valuable metals like gold in the form of lightweight compacted plates The first prototype banks of merchants from the ancient world, which are said to have existed in Assyria and Babylonia m around 2000 BC, provided grain loans to farmers and traders transporting products between cities. Later, lenders located in temples offered loans and introduced two crucial innovations: the acceptance of deposits and the changing of money. This occurred in ancient Greece and during the Roman Empire. Ancient Chinese and Indian archaeology from this time period demonstrates the existence of money-lending activity. This article discuss the evolution of the banking system in India from the Vedic Period to nationalisation of 14 major banks on July 19, 1969, and later.
Evolution of the Banking System in India
In India, banking has a history that predates even the Vedic Civilization. For instance, rnapatra or rnalekhya loan deeds were common in the Vedic era. Usury and interest rates were both common in Vedic India. The fact that Manusmriti sets the minimum and maximum interest rates and views money lending above a particular rate as a grievous sin serves as evidence of institutional money lending. However, it establishes several caste-specific ceiling rates. For instance, the interest rate for Brahmins was 24 percent, compared to 36 percent, 48 percent, and 60 percent for Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras. Similar to the Vedic period, the Buddhist, Mauryan, and Mughal eras are likewise noted for having produced a variety of these instruments. The Kautilya Arthashastra indicates the existence of bankers during the Mauryan era. The "Adesha" instruments, which are analogous to modern bills of exchange, existed during the Mauryan era. Numerous references to an indigenous financial system that supported the nation's trade and commerce can be found in ancient Indian literature. Since ancient times, bankers by the names of Shroffs, Seths, Sahukars, Mahajans, Chettis, etc. have operated in the industry. These native bankers ranged from shroffs with substantial operations to very minor moneylenders, conducting a large and specialised business that was even greater than that of banks. The British's ascent to power marked the beginning of modern banking in India. After defeating Tipu Sultan, the British solidified their position of dominance and rose to the top of the Indian political hierarchy. The European Agency Houses served as bankers prior to the establishment of the three Presidency Banks. As the Agency Houses had prospered, they also wanted to run Banks. In the 1770s, a renowned agency house named Alexander & Company began overseeing the Bank of Hindustan. It is unknown when exactly that bank was founded. The other Agency Houses in Bengal founded the Bengal Bank and the General Bank of India in the eighteenth century. The Agency Houses floated the Commercial Bank in 1819 and the Calcutta Bank in 1824. These banks were neither legitimate joint stock institutions nor did they have limited liability. They had unrestricted liability and were partnership firms. The 1860 Companies Act was the first piece of legislation to codify limited liability. Up to that point, banks had to either operate under unlimited liability or get a special Charter from the Crown. The Bank of Bengal was founded in 1806 as a successor to the Bank of Calcutta. The Swadeshi Movement, which inspired Indians to launch several new organisations, also served as inspiration for the launch of numerous new banks. During the 1906–13 economic boom, there was a notable growth in the number of joint stock banks. The Bank of India, The People's Bank of India Ltd. During this time, the Bank of Baroda, Indian Bank Ltd., and the Central Bank of India were founded. The Imperial Bank of India Act of 1920 combined the three Presidency Banks in Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras into the Imperial Bank in 1921. Although this bank was not authorised to issue bank notes, it was allowed to run the clearing house and hold government budget balances The Reserve Bank of India was established to serve as the Central Bank with the passage of the Reserve Bank of India Act in 1934. It obtained the ability to print money and served as the government's banker in place of the Imperial Bank. The Imperial Bank was given permission to represent the Reserve Bank of India in locations where there were no Reserve Bank branches, nevertheless.
Evolution of the Banking System: All You Need to Know
NATIONALISATION OF BANKS
The nationalisation of 14 major banks on July 19, 1969, is without a doubt the most significant historical event in India's financial history since independence. As the government believed that. Nationalization was seen as a major step toward achieving the socialistic pattern of society. The nationalised banks were expected to enhance lending to government-important sectors and to use their resources to further the interests of society as a whole. For these banks, a detailed plan of objectives, regulations, management, etc. was created. Nationalization was a realisation of the bank system's capacity to further more general economic goals. The banks needed to go out and broaden their network in order to prioritise mass banking over class banking. The expansion of finance in rural areas was a top priority. The advantages of nationalisation have been significant. The branch network of these banks has virtually covered the entire nation, particularly in rural and formerly unbanked areas.
CONCLUSION
Indian banks have over time altered the nation's depressing financial environment to support its expanding economy. There is no question that the Indian banking sector supports the nation's economy even now. The 2016 demonetization of currency notes is a good illustration. Almost overnight, existing currency notes were destroyed, causing havoc throughout the country. By enabling citizens all around the country to swap obsolete banknotes, banks assisted in the economy's recovery from the blow. The capacity of India's banking sector to sustain a country that is constantly hungry for financial development grows as the sector develops.

At a time when cinephiles were excited to see Saif Ali Khan share screen space with daughter Sara Ali Khan in Nitin Kakkar’s next, buzz has it that the makers are looking for a new face. It was in July this year that the news of Sara and Saif being approached for the film spread like wildfire. But soon the rumours of their collaboration were quashed by Saif, and now a report in a leading daily suggests that the makers are on a lookout for a fresh face for the film tentatively titled Jawani Deewani.Interestingly, the film will also mark Saif’s return to production under his newly launched banner, Black Knight Films. The 2014 film Happy Ending was the last project to have come out of Saif’s previous banner, Illuminati Films.A source was quoted as telling the daily the makers are conducting nationwide auditions for the role of Saif’s on-screen daughter.”Since it is an author-backed role, the makers are on the lookout for someone who is talented enough to pull off the part. Casting director Shruti Mahajan has started screening aspirants from across the country. They are keen to zero in on a girl in the next two months so that they can prep her for the big debut, well before the film rolls early next year,” said the sourced.Jay Shewakramani of Northern Light Films, who is co-producing the project with Saif, added, “The film revolves around a 40-something man refusing to grow up and act his age. Saif and I have successfully worked together creatively in Race (2008) and Race 2 (2013) [Shewakramani was the creative producer at Tips]. We are close friends and understand each other’s creative ideas.”Meanwhile, Sara is awaiting the release of Simmba and Kedarnath. The India Today : 3rd. Oct,18

Parmanu- The Story of Pokhran, an ode to India’s unsung heroes who came together despite all odds to make India a Nuclear Super Power, opened on a great note at the box-office as it went on to collect INR 4.82 crore on its first day.
Not only the first day figure is higher than some of the releases. But it is admirable that the movie could attract audiences in such numbers despite yesterday being the Semi Final play off in the Indian Premier League, which is always watched by millions all over the country.
The film, based on a true story that made India Proud- the series of Nuclear Test Explosions in Pokhran 20 years ago (in 1998). The film has received extremely positive reviews from the critics as well as the audience. And we can safely assume that a good word of mouth will help see the numbers go even higher in the future.
John Abraham also expressed how grateful he felt that all the work he put in the film, is finally being appreciated. He said, “Nothing could make me happier today than the validation of our efforts to celebrate our unsung heroes by our audience across India! I have been getting so many calls from our distributors and exhibitors and I’m thankful to each one of them for their unstinted support and for standing by and loving this labour of love. I am humbled and grateful to each one of them.”
Parmanu is a tribute to the efforts of the Indian Army, scientists, bureaucrats, intelligence agencies and others who worked so tirelessly against all odds to ensure that India finds its due place in the World Nuclear Map.
In an interview with a leading daily, John also mentioned that the team made sure the casting was spot on since it added authenticity to the film. He said, “When you see the film, and when you see these people, we have stuck to how the Pokhran scientists looked. I should credit our casting agent Shruti Mahajan for it, she has got characters that look real. For example, the guy who plays Chidambaram’s character, who is Ajay Subramaniam in the film, this is his first film, he suits the character properly, he even has a South Indian accent. And we used his South Indian accent in a way it should be used, we have not tampered the facts. Tiku ji, who has also played Sonam’s (Kapoor) dad in Neerja, is from DRDO, so we have stuck to the way his body language should be. So going back to Diana, her character is an amalgamation of a couple of characters, in this cast, full of male characters, we also needed a female character to add some glamour quotient. She has added a lot of value in this film, as she has de-glamourised herself to a large extent.”
Directed by Abhishek Sharma, Parmanu-The Story of Pokhran stars John Abraham, Diana Penty and Boman Irani and is produced by JA Entertainment, Zee Studios and Kyta Productions. Vashu Bhagnani’s Pooja Entertainment is its All India Distributor.
Parmanu- The Story of Pokhran released Worldwide on 25th May, 2018.
