Vagabond
Summary: There’s nothing you wouldn’t do for Daniel. Even if it means flying out to Singapore on race day.
Pairing: Daniel Ricciardo x reader (unnamed OFC)
Warnings: Language
Word count: 1.9k
AN: How could I not? ♥
Part of the Pieces of Us universe (collection of one-shots).
Pieces of Us masterlist
The sound of your phone ringing pulls you out of your early morning slumber and you blindly reach for where it’s laying on your nightstand, swiping right to accept the call without really looking at the screen, “Hello?”
“Hey,”
You pull the phone away from your ear and look at it in disbelief, thinking maybe this is all a bad dream, but the caller ID confirms it's not, “Blake?”
“Yeah.”
Shit.
“Taff-” there’s an urgency to his voice that makes your heart beat faster and sends your mind racing because there’s no reason to call this early unless- Oh God- Daniel- What if-
“Taff,” Blake says again, his voice kinder now. “I need you here.”
You let out a whimper in pain because no- Not like this- God, not like-
“Oh. No that’s not why- Shit. He’s ok,” Blake quickly tells you, “but I need you to listen, ok?”
You nod, then realise he can’t see you and so you whisper, “Ok.”
“There’s a flight from Perth at twelve ten,” Blake tells you, using what you and Daniel dubbed his ‘manager-Blake-voice’. The one that doesn’t take no for an answer. The one who you trust blindly. And so you listen. Even if you don’t know what the hell is going on. “You’re flying Qantas, so you can use priority. I’ve already checked you in, I’ll send you the boarding pass in a couple of minutes. I’ll text you the rest of the information for when you land in Singapore, but there’ll be someone to pick you up, drive you to the track so you can see him before the race starts, ok?”
Twelve ten. Ok. That’s means you’ll have to be at the airport at ten at the latest, even if you only bring a carry-on, so you’ll have to leave here at nine-thirty, which is an hour from now, so technically there’s enough time, unless-
“Taff?” Blake’s voice interrupts your thoughts. “I need you to make this flight, ok? It’s important.”
It’s important.
The words echo through your mind as you try to connect the dots, try to figure out what it is you’re missing, try to understand why Blake would call you at eight AM on a Sunday morning during the Singapore Grand Prix weekend, asking you to fly out not even four hours later. You try to come up with a million other reasons why he needs you there but it’s no good- You know there can be only one.
People say that whenever something mentally or physically terrifying happens, a person will either fight, or flight. You like to think there’s a third option; save what you can and make sure no one gets left behind. And so you ask, “Do you want me to pick up Joe and Grace?”
“No.”
You push yourself up from where you’ve been sitting on the edge of the bed and walk over to the window, peeking through the curtains to find the sun already high in the sky, “No, they’re driving to the airport themselves, or-”
“No, they can’t make it in time.”
“Blake,” you whisper, something heavy settling deep in your chest because this is not how it’s supposed to go. “If this is- If he’s-” You take a shaky breath, “They should be there.”
“I know, babe, but-” he sounds absolutely defeated. “I looked at all the options but with them at Karroun Hill they’re too far from an airport to make it work on such short notice.”
You feel your throat go dry, because his parents should be there. “Michelle then?”
“She’s got the kids-”
“I can take the kids,” you offer immediately. “If I go over there and watch the kids, Michelle can go. They might still let you change the name on the ticket if you-”
“Taff,”
You start to feel yourself get desperate, “He needs his family there, Blake.”
“Taff,” Blake tries again, his voice filled with sympathy. “You’re his family too.”
***
It takes you forty minutes to shower, pack a small overnight bag, and leave the house. Of course you need to stop for gas, which costs you another ten minutes, but ninety minutes after Blake called you’re at the airport and waiting for your flight to board. Which isn’t for another two hours.
You kill the time by having breakfast, or try to anyway, because you’re way too nervous to eat more than a couple of bites and so instead you find a quiet corner and send a text to Grace and Joe to let them know you’re flying out to Singapore. Michelle gets a text too- by now you know better than to call anyone in a public place, especially with this kind of sensitive information- and she replies within minutes, telling you to give her brother a big hug when you see him.
You decide against texting Daniel, don’t want him to be distracted, and instead you spend your time people-watching and remembering the last time you were in Singapore, two years ago, when Daniel finished fifth in that piece of shit McLaren. It was his best result in that god awful final year with the team and so you ignored Zak Brown’s pleas to celebrate with the team and instead opted for a quiet celebration with just the two of you.
You’re so lost in thoughts you almost miss the final boarding call but there’s a kind gentleman next to you that nudges your elbow and says, “Isn’t that your flight, sweetheart?”
***
In the end, there’s a delay leaving Perth, a delay arriving at Singapore, and a never-ending queue at customs. To say you’re on edge when you finally get into the car Blake sent to pick you up would be an understatement. It’s already past eight in the evening and there’s no way you’ll make it to the track in time to see Daniel before the race. Your already broken heart breaks into a million more pieces at the thought of that and it takes everything you have not to break down right then and there.
The driver seems to feel there’s an urgency, weaving in and out of traffic effortlessly, dropping you off at the paddock entrance a mere twenty minutes later with a hesitant smile. You make sure to thank him by tipping generously before you get out of the car and step into the hot Singapore air.
With only a few minutes left until the race starts there’s an almost eerie quiet in the paddock, most people getting ready in their respective garages, pit walls, or starting boxes, and so you make it through the gates and into the alley behind the garages with relative ease. No one seems to pay you any mind as you walk to the VCARB garage, which suits you just fine.
The formation lap starts just as you enter the back of the garage, the roar of the engines sending a shiver down your spine. You find your way through the maze of corridors, offices, and driver rooms with relative ease, grabbing your pair of headphones as you pass the comms wall, and then all of a sudden you’re in the actual garage and there’s no going back.
You look around and find Blake in his usual spot, near the back, standing a little to the side so he can keep an eye both on the monitors and the pit wall. The pit crew is too busy watching the cars line up on the starting grid and so you’re able to sneak past them to stand next to Blake. You look at him once you’ve put your headphones on and connected them to the comms unit and your heart, oh your heart. He looks so defeated, the sad smile he wears so unlike him, and you hate it.
There’s so much to say and yet you both keep quiet, knowing now’s not the time. It’ll come- After.
And so when Blake puts his arm around your shoulders and pulls you close, just as the red lights come on one by one, you have to bite your lip to keep from crying and try to get time to slow down. You don’t want this race to ever start. Or end.
***
It’s when Daniel gets boxed on lap fifty-eight that Blake nudges you and motions for you to take your headphones off. When you do, he leans in and puts his mouth close to your ear, “Pierre’s going to share his channel with you after the finish, ok?”
All of a sudden there’s a lump in your throat and all you can do is nod.
***
“Ok mate, thanks again for the hard work,” you can hear Pierre tell Daniel. “When we stop at the bridge, P1 on full-car switch-off, P0 on everything else.” On the screen you see Pierre looking at the garage from over his shoulder, “There’s someone here with a special message for you, Daniel.”
“Hi babe,” you start, the tears you’ve been fighting all day finally spilling over. “I just want you to know that I’m so proud of you.”
There’s a lot of static on the line but you think you hear him let out a quiet laugh, “Ah, I can’t believe this.”
“I’ll see you in a bit, ok?” You smile through your tears, “Take it all in, Dan. It’s yours.”
On the screen that shows you his onboard camera, you can see him nod. It takes a while before he answers, but when he does his voice is full of emotion, “Yep. Understood.”
***
It’s when the screens show Daniel sitting in his car, in Parc Fermé after the race, that you need to step out of the garage and into the corridor that leads to Daniel’s driver room. Because all of a sudden it hits you. He’s never going to have a moment like this ever again. The quiet crying from earlier turns into big, ugly sobs because God, it hurts. There’s too many people around for anyone not to notice you and so you use your access code to unlock Daniel’s room and step inside, a safe haven in the middle of all this madness.
You try some of the breathing techniques Michael taught you when he was still working with Daniel and after a few minutes you’ve calmed down, if only a little. It’s then the door opens and Daniel steps inside and all of a sudden it’s like nothing else exists. He looks the way you feel and so you are wrapping your arms around him before he’s even had the chance to close the door behind him and tell him, over and over and over again, “I love you. I love you. I love you.”
You know there’s not much time, know he has interviews and debriefs to get to, and so you pull back a little and cup his face, rubbing your thumbs over the stubble of his beard before you lean in and kiss him. Hard.
“I should go,” Daniel whispers against your lips.
“I know-”
“Wait for me?”
“Take as long as you need.” You stand on your toes and press another kiss to his lips, “You know I’d do anything for you, right?” There’s a hint of that mischievous smile you fell in love with all those years playing on his lips, and so you match his smile and add, “And-”
Of course he plays along, “And?”
You rest one hand against his chest, over his heart, “You love me for it.”
He lets his hands fall to your hips and rests his forehead against yours, sharing a breath, “That I do.”
“That you do.”
He presses a kiss to your forehead then, “Always.”

14 June 2024. Port Augusta: (pop approx 13,500)
I am sorry I posted on to the wrong blog yesterday. If you feel like it, just hop on to
nickypoppieandel.tumblr.com
Now… What makes a good caravan Park? First up would definitely be good bathrooms! We didn’t like the Broken Hill Caravan Park much at all, but it SO redeemed itself with the BEST bathroom and showers, especially the shower as they had an inside screen door, so clothes on the bench in the cubicle stayed dry. And plenty of room to get dressed again. Over the years, it appears that caravan parks have made great efforts at providing facilities for travelers, from bathrooms, laundries with driers and outdoor clotheslines, camp kitchens for those with no cooking and/or washing up facilities and some even have a little library. Travelers are usually really friendly, chatty and unselfish and we have met up with very few grumpy travelers!
I forgot to say yesterday that we learned that over the last 800 million years, erosion and climate has slowly worn away the mountains of the Flinders (and probably everywhere else too) and in another 300 million years, it will be flat. Almost impossible to imagine and I haven’t yet found any sort of confirmation of that fact.
Even though some of the scenery from the air yesterday appeared to be “more of the same”, in reality, it changed every few minutes. From red (oxide) to yellow (can’t remember why) to sandy coloured. The photo below is an aerial view of Wilpena Pound. If you look hard enough (🤣🤣) you can almost see that the mountains make a perfect circle round the “pound”.
This morning we walked around Hawker. Coming through the town the other day, I remarked that it looked like a pretty prosperous little town very neat and tidy with a huge sporting complex which wouldn’t be catering just for tourists. We learned …. at the groovy cafe Flinders Food Co that it is a pretty prosperous little (350 people) town, catering for rural grazing (mostly sheep and some cattle properties), fly in/fly out workers, tourism employment and tourists. A great little town I think.
Our day today has been having a walk around Hawker - including the obligatory small cappuccino at the local cafe and then a short drive to Port Augusta. A daily big shop at Woolies, in case, from now on, supplies are limited, lunch and then we dropped the vehicle at the designated van hire contracted repair place to have a couple of things repaired (all insured…. that’s what you pay $60 a day extra for! It’s called a Stress Free Package! To think we drove all the way to Perth from Sydney, 2 weeks without incident, and this time, in 10 days, we’ve had an outside light that no longer works, a broken valve on the grey water outlet pipe and a damaged windscreen (luckily behind the rear view mirror so no viewing problems).
When I say “supplies”, that means tins of corn kernels, tins of baked beans, wholemeal English muffins, fruit, tinned salmon, yoghurt, milk, Cruskits etc. As you can see, we live high on the hog!! Oh yes! And a supply of wine. Our flight was expensive so we have resolved, no more meals “out”.
Port Augusta isn’t the most beautiful place but we decided we need to find a highlight! My highlight was a walk along the sand along a narrow stretch of the Spencer Gulf. There was a sign there about Shore Birds, that drop in to the area on their way to Siberia. They stay around Port Augusta (and probably other places) to eat and store up fat for their journey ahead. Their return journey, at 70 km per hour, is 25,000 km! How amazing is that.
Another highlight has to be helpful people. The G’Day Caravan Park at Port Augusta is fantastic. Very busy, clean, helpful, good bathrooms …. not quite as good as Broken Hill!!) and is fenced off due to kids coming in and breaking and stealing things (it is clear there are tensions around town), so each vehicle has an individual code to get in and we all have the same code to get into the bathrooms. At the Nullarbor Roadhouse, there was a large sign advertising the “secret” code for the girls’ bathroom, because management was sick of people forgetting it 🤣🤣🤣🤣.
Anyway….. moving along…. we arrived at our site and couldn’t connect the electrical cord. We knocked on the door of next door’s caravan and an old fella came out and said we could plug in to our other option but the cord went across his tow bar and we were concerned he’d take us with him if he drove off before us in the morning. He said “Well, you’d be coming to Ceduna with me if I did that! I won’t drive off…….. but I have been known to forget cords!!” Of course I had visions of me not sleeping a WINK, wondering if he was about to drive off (I’m sure he was joking…) we persuaded him to let us lay the cord under his tow bar, even a bit concerned about a vehicle driving over it. When we went to plug the other end of the cord into the van, it too didn’t work! At that moment a man walked past and said “Having trouble plugging in? I’m a sparky, let’s have a look….. you’re plugging into the wrong side of the van!!! That’s the electrical outlet point.” So click click, we plugged in correctly - as we have done FOR 10 nights!!!😱 - no cord under any vehicle, but feeling silly we could be so stupid but thankful for really cheery, helpful people. Of course, both men basically thought we didn’t have a clue, but that’s ok because no-one knows us!
I have a couple of photos to post but will do them separately as I don’t want to risk losing what I’ve written.
Tomorrow we head to Coober Pedy. We’re booked into another G’Day Caravan Park.

NDIS Assist Personal Activities
NDIS Assist personal activities is a support service that covers a range of activities of daily living. It includes showering, oral hygiene and hair care, dressing, toileting, bladder and bowel management and moving around in the home.
This type of support is available to people with disabilities who include it in their personalised plan. Interested participants can access it from registered NDIS providers.
High Intensity Daily Personal Activities
Daily personal activities are support services that help individuals with disabilities meet their individual goals, outcomes and needs. These are usually provided in a participant’s home, but can also be offered in the community.
Supports in this category are complex and can involve health related activities, such as suctioning or behaviour support. They often pose the highest risks for participants, workers and others, and therefore require advanced skills and knowledge.
These supports are classified in Module 1 and must be delivered by a registered provider who is accredited in this service area. Module 1 supports are covered by the NDIS High Intensity Support Skills Descriptors, updated in February 2023.
ShiftCare’s Module 1 - High Intensity Daily Personal Activities pack contains all the policies, procedures and rosters you need to deliver these supports in accordance with the new NDIS high intensity skill descriptors. Purchase it in conjunction with our NDIS Certification pack or as a standalone policy package.
Self-Management Capacity Building
NDIS participants have the option to self-manage their funding, which means they can choose their own providers and negotiate prices for supports. This allows them to get the most out of their money and pursue their goals.
It’s important for self-managers to be innovative when working out how best to use their support funding. For example, they may find a cheaper provider for some of their services or hire a coordinator to help with budgeting, paying invoices and keeping records.
When engaging their own staff, self-managers must ensure that the person they are hiring has an NDIS worker screening clearance. This can be done by asking the person for their clearance number or requesting access to a national database. NDIS participants are also encouraged to have a service agreement with their providers to set out the responsibilities and expectations of both parties. This can help reduce conflicts and improve outcomes for participants.
Community Participation
Whether it’s attending a community event, going shopping or travelling for work, the NDIS can help participants get involved in their local communities. Community participation supports can be a part of either your Core Supports or Capacity Building budget.
The NDIS is a goals-based scheme which means it funds individualised support packages based on your needs and goals. Your NDIS planner will talk to you about what supports you want and need, taking into account any informal supports you receive from family, friends and community services.
If you’d like to access community participation support, you can include it in your NDIS plan by contacting your ECEI Coordinator or LAC. You can also find a range of registered providers who offer this support service through the NDIS provider portal or by contacting the NDIA contact centre. State Wide Community Services is one such provider offering this support service in Perth and Peel region. Our team of qualified and experienced support workers can help you develop the skills you need to participate in your local community.
Social and Emotional Wellbeing
Personal activities are essential to improving quality of life and achieving your goals. Depending on the individual, these may include things like bathing and grooming or community participation. It can also be a way to keep socially engaged and meet new people.
Personal activities can be included in your personalised plan under the Core Supports or Capacity Building budget. They are designed to build a participant’s independence in daily activities and help reduce the need for ongoing supports.
To ensure you have the best opportunity to access these supports, it is a good idea to consult a qualified support coordinator. They can assist you to navigate the NDIS and better understand your options. They can also assist you to set up goals and develop an action plan. This will include setting social goals that are relevant at the time of your plan review and evaluating how they will change as you progress through different stages in your life.

Wednesday 16th August
Before I get to today,as promised a bit more detail on yesterday.
As I said the flight was delayed by an hour because the incoming from Perth was an hour late.(I have been told by locals this is not an unusual occurrence). Yesterday was late because they had to redistribute the hold load so better balanced. Apparently it was carrying freight as well. As what they were putting into the hold was known in advance have no idea why they hadn’t sorted this in advance. I think they need a good loadmaster😂. By, the time we got to Cocos it was dark, windy and showers of rain. Not an auspicious start! However I was saved by the lovely Jill who was standing there with a sign held up for my accomodation. She just took over and helped me find my car, move my luggage and give me the gen re getting some food. Unlike the flight from Perth I came on this flight was just snacks and no food. Poor passengers going on to Perth! However at the airport is a place called Saltys which does pizzas fast for the transit passengers (you have to know that but people cotton on quick). The same place then does them and delivers across the lawn from them to the Cocos club(read local pub and bottle shop😁). I preordered then and walked back 40mins later after dropping stuff at my accommodation (I will just use its name Birdsnest from now on). Jill had me follow her to Birdsnest, settled me in and was generally extremely helpful and things just seemed under control again! She actually manages the place and the owner Peter lives next door. I walked the 3mins back and as my pizza wasn’t quite ready popped into the club and bought a bottle of red.
COMMENT
The management of transit and other passengers and the staying people’s luggage is very unique at least in my experience. They do the usual directing groups down different routes but those staying end up corralled in a pen area with a barrier like in the airport queues lines. Then an either border force or police person tells us to watch a screen which tells us about the road rules. Fastest is 50km and mainly 30km/hr. They also have these sites set up with a radio that you can call police or ambulance on as there is no mobile service on the island at all. In the same place is free first aid items you can use for free but tell police what you used so they can replace. Very innovative people here😁.
We then stood about and the tug carrying our luggage pulls in in Front of us and undercover and the barrier is removed and we are told to collect our baggage😁. Talk about a free for all😂. As you can imagine I was tired, hungry and over it so Jill’s friendly face was a godsend.
NOW TO TODAY
Woke after a restless night so not refreshed. I think I may be back in a run of restless nights☹️. Certainly my back is sore so that probably wakes me. Still Panadol and a red should sort for tonight😁. It was however very quiet except for the wind and the pounding of the wave both of which were very relaxing (but seemingly not enough to keep me asleep). Still if you are awake it is a lovely sound to hear. I will post photos but I am literally a narrow roads width from the ocean and can sit on my veranda or in my lounge and see the ocean. Unfortunately you can’t swim in this bit as has massive rips ,drop offs and is dangerous. However there is a little pool area I am told very close you can have a dip in. The weather has remained overcast, windy and sporadic showers so swim isn’t so inviting today although not cold at all. I am still in shorts and thongs😁.
Due to the weather my 4 hr boat tour which was my way of dealing with the severe reduction of the ferry service to Home and Direction Island (for ferry maintenance and was aware in advance hence the tour booking) was cancelled. The man who runs it is Peter who lives next door and owns the Birdsnest. He is a lovely man and says he will see once the weather improves if he can fit me in somewhere around my other tours.
Given my sudden free morning I decided to walk down to the visitors and community resource centre to see what i could do around my other tours that would at least get me to Home Island. The big fly in the ointment is the limited ferry service and fact that only takes 15 people each time and it is a 30min trip. It is first in best dressed so not exactly reliable. However after talking with the lady at the visitors who lives on Home Island and works here on West Island and hence reliant on the ferry for work we hatched a plan that is as risk proof as we can. I have booked a self drive buggy on Home island which will meet me off the ferry. I am getting the 0830 ferry tomorrow and will get there at 8 if not earlier to be at the head of the cue which should increase my chances! If I miss that ferry the whole plan collapses.
I have also booked a tour of the Clunies Ross house and hopefully will get back on the 4pm ferry🤞.
Having done that I set up my wifi hotspot for use outside of my unit(whose wifi I am still not able to connect too!). I am hoping at some stage to use the hotspot connection at the resource centre to try getting the blog out.
Found the shop and where my other 2 tours leave from and none more than 5 mins walk from Birdsnest incl the Cocos club,Saltys, other eateries, visitors and resources centre etc. The beaches best to swim at and the ferry are about 4-6km away hence the car advantage. There is a bus that runs to the ferry which cost 50c for bus and $2.50 ferry one way and cash small denomination only as limited change😁.
My car is a story in itself. I will post a photo but it is a huge red Nissan 4 x4 and a proper one if a bit worse for wear. I need a ladder to get into it and feel ridiculous driving it😂. It also has one idiosyncrasy. It has an immobiliser that if you don’t press a button on the key ring you can’t start the engine.. why it has this given everybody is told to leave the keys in the car as no crime so safe🤷♀️. Anyway my immobiliser button is broken and awaiting a replacement. So I was left instructions to touch the 2 wires together to turn it off So I could start the car😬. As it was pitch black, raining and I didn’t have my reading glasses on I couldn’t read that but must have accidentally touched them while I was trying to figure out how to start it and off we went. Didn’t find out the whole deal until this morning🤣. Nearly got caught out locking myself out of the car this morning when I must have done something to this finely tuned set wires and couldn’t open the door. Fortunately I had left the driver window down and managed to reach in and jiggle the thing to get the door open..I am going to have to get much better at managing that idiosyncratic system as paranoid now I will lock myself out again. Am seriously considering breaking the rules and taking the keys with me but equally paranoid I will lose them or further damage the system! Rental cars are all booked up so I was just the lucky punter😏.
Found out that they are building something for the RAAF here which I assume is something attached to the airport but no idea. Do know that as a result there are workers, many with their families living here for 18mths to 2yrs which puts pressure on accommodation.
Despite my best efforts till no WIFI working in accommodation so will have to catch Peter to ask why.
Did a drive around after lunch to all the beaches and tourist areas that are out of walking distance incl a dummy run to where the ferry leaves tomorrow. I am paranoid about not getting on and as the visitors centre is telling everyone get there at 8 for the 8.30 ferry t be sure am going to try to get there at 0730. So much is hanging on getting on this ferry so am going to everything to maximise my chances😁.
I took a few photos but hard to capture. It looks like Hawaii as in films with narrow roads weaving through coconut palms and tropical trees with about 50mtres of cleared ground between the road and the palms. Looks like the road is going through a lawn area with garden behind. Very impressive. There is a coconut farm here. They do a tour but only one day a week and I missed it! Many of the beaches are signed not to swim due to severe rips and very strong currents. There is a couple of beautiful beaches where you can swim and I plan to try to get some swimming in on the weekend when I hope the wind will die down and weather improves. However despite the weather have managed well seeing stuff so happy. However big day and early start to so having dinner in my unit. I really never feel much like eating out after a big day as a tourist anyway but making an exception Friday as is fish and chips night at Saltys 😁.
Photos: my enormous car is seen in the view from my unit verandah, view from car back to the unit, and the road to the ferry and that is typical of all the roads,so pretty!

Construction Cleaning Perth - Turning a Builders Site Into a Show Home
After builders cleaning is a vital part of any home renovation project. It involves removing all residual materials and debris that has been left by the builders after they have finished their job. Hiring a professional cleaner is an excellent way to ensure that the results of your renovation will not be marred by any leftover materials like paint, plaster, cement and wood shavings.
Construction Cleaning Perth is a specialised service offered by reputable cleaning companies. These companies specialise in preparing new building sites and newly renovated homes for their new occupants. They have a team of dedicated cleaners that are skilled at turning a construction site into a show home. They work tirelessly to comb through each room of the property and wipe down all surfaces including cupboards, drawers, shelves, doors and frames, window sills and frames, ceiling fans, light switches, electrical appliances and much more.
They also clean all bathrooms and toilets, scrub and disinfect toilets and sinks and clean all baths and showers and their screens. They clean all kitchen cabinets, countertops and appliances as well as wiping down all counters and tables in the living areas of the house. All wardrobes and built in cupboards will be wiped down and dusted. They also clean all upholstered furniture and wooden furniture and polish them up. They can also wipe down all mirrors and vacuum the entire house including the exterior of the house. This type of cleaning takes a lot of time and patience, but the end result is a spotless show home.
