Oh we LOVE a ghostly visitation in this house! I do love the criticism he's giving Shin here, that unlike either he or Miyokichi, Konatsu is strong. He seems proud of her, for all her I'm sure annoying strong will, that she thinks for herself and doesn't easily get brought into things. I would be proud of her too! EVen though I DO think she acts like a little bit of a dumbass from time to time, I think she's got plenty of good qualities and she has driving force.

I mean, I don't know if I agree with this or not. I could see how Bon believes this, and I don't even necessarily think he's the WRONG kind of wrong, but, I'm not sure it's fair to him to believe that he hasn't changed at all. Obviously, he has, or he never would have taken on Yotarou. I think that's a good thing. I think change is important, especially as we get older and are somewhat less likely to naturally do so.

And yeah. you should be proud! You worked really hard to get to this point, and you, in a way, are the second coming of Shin that actually made it. You actually figured out how to apply yourself and work hard, and that means something I think especially to Bon, though I don't know if he'd ever admit to it.

Exactly! If you want something to stay a secret the only person you can realistically tell is yourself, because you can't trust anyone else. I don't even mean that in an "everyone is out to get you" way, but in a "Your secrets will never be as important to them as they are to you" way.

And this I gotta give him: Playing to an audience of very few, he still patters, he still fills up the stage, he still delights in every single laugh he gets. I find that very winning. The opera I was at last night only had 26 people in the whole crowd, but you know what? They still sang their hearts out, and it made me proud that there are people that can do that, and that get onstage even when what they're doing isn't necessarily the easiest sell here, and do it with confidence.

So, I give Yotarou a lot of shit, and probably will continue to do so, but whatever else he's got going on, he is truly being a part of this theater, really soaking it in, no matter what else is going on, and I appreciate that.

I had almost completely forgotten about Framing Device, incredible. So I guess Bon's heart did soften enough that this guy can work his way into a practically dead art form, but you know what? I suppose if he's happy, that's fine. Though it does annoy me that I assume poor Konatsu is going to get screwed completely, and I can understand that in life sometimes, thems the breaks and still be fucking annoyed by it.

Oof what a visual. He's burning up Shin, burning up the Yakumo name, but will that finish it? Will any of that ever be enough to stop being haunted by this man, this story, this idea?

The show, in the next breath:

So yeah, Konatsu functions as a ghost within the narrative. She is neither her father nor her mother, but she has bits of both of them, echoes that come off the walls and through the windows and haunt Bon daily. He cannot touch of feel Miyokichi and Shin, and yet they are constantly there, constantly reminding him of everything he's lost. And she can't be heard or understood, no matter how she screams.

A sliver of emotion! But yes, of course, Shin was the one that was going to change things, and Bon was going to be there to reel him back in, and together they were going to create this middle lane for rakugo, and all of that went out the window when Shin left. All of that went away when Shin didn't even try to live. And now, it's just Bon, lumbering about unevenly on his own.

And of COURSE this makes him think of Shin and how Shin had already been thinking about this, years before this was a problem for any actual rakugo performer on top. People weren't thinking about this years ago, though they should have been, especially on the top. But Shin was, long before Bon himself was. Of course that's all he can think of in this moment, is this call from beyond the grave.
