Wrapped Tight Together
Pre-Izumi/Keiko/Saori, 700+ words
“What are you doing here?”
“Sleepover. Duh.”
Saori’s face is bright and peppy as always, and so is Keiko’s slightly more wicked grin (but only visibly, the both of them are full of wiles as they are full of care, and they may drive her insane one day, but she may end up letting them), so Izumi concludes that she is very much in danger.
“That you planned last minute,” Izumi says, still in disbelief. She checks her clock. “At 10 in the evening. On a Tuesday.”
“Oh, you’re no fun,” Keiko says. She holds up a bag. “We brought food and everything.”
“Well, if you brought food,” Izumi jokes, but the others are already sitting down and setting up. She sighs. “Then sure. Why not.”

only just now finding out that geo9875 (the subber of Sukeban Deka III, Magical Chinese Girl Paipai and an insane amount of 80s Sukeban shows) a few months ago did a new encoding of Shoujo Commando Izumi; basically just putting Big Nova's subs onto the higher quality DVDs. I didn't expect we'd be getting any Shoujo Commando Izumi news this year but here we are, the show now looks even better to watch!!

I was not expecting Shoujo Commando Izumi to be even a little bit gay going into it (I didn't even know there would be another girl the main character's age to ship her with) so I am kind of blown away by how much subtext there is.
They flirted so much throughout episode 4 when they set out on a life-threatening escapade together... which has continued in episode 5... only for Izumi try to leave Keiko behind so that her life wouldn't be endangered further.
And then a romantic love song starts playing?? Now, in general, I will say that the songs in this series don't always bear much relation to anything that goes on in it. For example, the ED is a romantic love song specifically from a guy's point of view, but no man is shown in it and at least so far there are no male characters the protagonist is even close to (Is the singer supposed to represent the audience?? I don't know who the target demographic was for this series).
But this one... actually fits kinda well, if you imagine it as being from Keiko's point of view.
This is Izumi, the lonely "ice angel," who has given up on ever having a normal life, but is finding joy in little moments with Keiko.
Keiko is frustrated because Izumi is lying to herself by trying to send her home when really, she wants to be with her.
In an earlier episode, Keiko said that she wasn't sure whether or not Izumi was "the real deal," but wanted to find out. Well, there's no question now that she is, so perhaps this is referring to the brilliance of their connection.
Keiko may not have been tortured like Izumi was, but she has lost people important to her in this town. Not that she wants to literally leave town--if anyone feels that way, it's Izumi. But they both have lost a lot there.
One way of looking at it is that the perspective of the song may have shifted from Keiko's to Izumi's, also.
...After that, there are no more subtitles for the song lyrics, but... I hope I get more insert songs like this. Maybe I'll look up the rest of the lyrics to this one some other time.

this post is sukeban erasure
Hana no Asuka Gumi (above)
"The story centers around the 14-year old sukeban, the titular Asuka Kuraku, and her various misadventures dealing with rival gangs and rowdy enemies. Armed with her trusty gold coin and chain, she uses her raw strength and quick wits to survive the streets and protect her loved ones."
sukeban deka (above)
"A 16-year-old sukeban named Saki Asamiya is offered by the police to become an undercover detective to escape prison. She initially refuses, so the police blackmail her by offering to pardon her mother, who is on death row for killing her husband, eventually forcing her to accept."
Some IRL women driven action
"A wandering tough biker girl aids a female delinquent gang in their battles against an all-male Seiyu group over a fixed boxing match."
Hana no asuka Gumi TV Series
The extremely popular tv adaption of manga above
Shojo/shoujo commando Izumi
"A high school girl, Izumi Gojo, who has been found guilty of murder, falls into the sea and disappears when running away from the police. However, a mysterious group rescues her and had her undertake training to transform her into an assassin. Years later, Izumi seeks to escape the group."
also like i'm not a big fan of people saying "just go read shoujo" in response to anime fans complaining about misogyny in anime, because like don't get me wrong shoujo is great, i've had a good time with it, but i'm not sure if the hyper-feminine girl genre that focuses on romance should be like the only anime female anime fans are expected to watch. that and it low key feels like it's reinventing the pink aisle.
#this argument peeves me because it shows some laziness from op#there are hundreds of shoujo all female cast content from japan but its passed over constantly bc its not at the standard of current#mainstream#all the stuff i posted here was revolutionarily popular in japan at the time it was on every tv and in everybodies bags#but because its not fantasy ppl today dont give it a chance#no smoke to op tho delinquent theme content can be hard to digest for some ppl#sukeban deka had the same popularity among girls as sailor moon did it just wasnt brought over seas and stayed local to japan

Survive
Izumi character study, 600+ words
Her dreams are full of bombs she can run from.
Gunshots and explosions and running and—
Gojo Izumi is alone and she has been for a long time. By the time she arrived here fighting was already akin to photosynthesis - easy and natural and needed to survive, to be able to eat and breathe and feel, but not close to the things a teenage girl should need. A girl is a bud, but she is not a plant, and Izumi has been stepped on so many times that bud may very well be dead before it blossoms.
Even if she escapes, she cannot go back. A reminder over and over floods through on the speakers.
Early on, she screamed and cried and banged on her own door, but it never went anywhere.
Early on, she tried to talk to the boy next door, but the both of them were beat for it.
Early on, she…
