Tsurune Character Songs Album Review
We had a lot of thoughts about these songs while working with the lyrics, so we decided to do a mini album review! Please enjoy listening to each songs as we reflect on the lyrics and composition~
Up Stairs
Mod Yumi: A very gentle, comforting song, as expected from a Minato/Seiya duet. The composers did an excellent job capturing the feeling of nostalgia; this somehow feels like a song I've known and loved for years. The lyrics are perfect--I love the references to the bridge scene from s1 ep10. The line "I had a place where my heart could relax" is so precious <3 Overall, I don't think it's the strongest song on the album, but it's definitely one of my top faves!
Mod Optimus Prime: A heartfelt way to start off the album! It's very sweet and mellow, which of course really fits the fact that, y'know, the song is about Minato and Seiya's relationship! It's more or less just a straight callback to all of season one, but it's really touching how (both literally and figuratively) they come together at the end there.
Crossover
Mod Yumi: This song is so excessively dramatic and I kinda love it?? It does NOT sound like a song that ties into a soothing, chill slice of life archery anime and I am here for it. But I'm also weak for synth horns; give me a cheesy overexuberant fake brass section and I'm sold. Bonus points for all of the archery references and unnecessarily homoerotic lyrics. (And special shoutout to Mod Optimus Prime, our resident FukuJun stan, for helping me with the color codes because I was completely lost lmao)
Mod Optimus Prime: Probably the character duo song with the most...attitude to it? And sass, which of course, fits these two incredibly troublesome boys. To me, it's almost like the two are having a back-and-forth with each other while also brazenly admitting to each other just how tangled up they are—admittedly a reoccurring theme for the duet songs, but that doesn't make it any less cute, I think!
Ari no Mama de
Mod Yumi: Very cute and wholesome, doesn't really do it for me in terms of composition though. I do think this is the most well-acted song on the album. Having heard both of these seiyuu sing as other characters (notably Suzuki Ryouta as Bisco from Sabikui Bisco and Yano Shougo as Mafuyu from Given), I was blown away by how different they both managed to sound! Changing your voice to that extent while singing is not an easy thing to do. I was also tickled by the fact that they both noticeably sang less well than I know they're both capable of singing, because it suited the characters better to do so. Listening to this song, you wouldn't think either of these singers are particularly talented, but that fact is proof in and of itself that they ARE talented. Mad respect for the skill displayed here!
Mod Optimus Prime: Unsurprisingly, sunshine boy Ryouhei and the other local cheery boy have an easygoing and slow duet! I can't really say too much aside from the fact that the lyrics are both just really cute and earnest—you can see Ryouhei's influence here, haha.
Growing Up
Mod Yumi: Very cute, very catchy! I enjoy this song a lot. As a side note, I find it interesting that besides Minato, Nanao is the only character to be featured in two songs. One of the things I like about Nanao is that he's characterized mainly through his relationships with other characters. Sometimes when we see this happening it's more to do with lazy character writing (and lbr, it usually happens with female characters). But in this case, it actually builds our understanding of the character, rather than just casting him into the side character role of 'only here to develop the MCs'. To me it's always felt like he's the most put-together of the team, watching over everyone else and giving them a nudge in the right direction, while blending in so effortlessly they don't suspect a thing, like the social chameleon he is. Oops, this just turned into me gushing about Tsurune character writing lol. The song's nice idk what else to tell ya
Mod Optimus Prime: Also yet another honest song—a rare thing for Kacchan! It's obviously about Kaito and Nanao's close friendship and the further development during season two, so it's fitting we also get to see more of Nanao's (somewhat hidden) stubborn side here. Not to meme here, but really shows how their relationship fits the, "the more things change, the more things stay the same," aka them supporting ("protecting") each other through thick and thin.
Gekkou
Mod Yumi: I'm not the biggest fan of the composition of this song. I can't put my finger on why, but the main melody isn't working for me (and doesn't work great for Asashin's voice either tbh). That said, the backing track lives rent free in my head, I'm OBSESSED. And I love the dreamy feel of the lyrics! Whereas the others feel more like a dialogue between the singers, this one feels like a poem. The ethereal quality of the music and the lyrics draws me back to Masa-san's introduction, when he was a cryptid/ghost (lmao) appearing in the dead of night to guide Minato back to archery
Mod Optimus Prime: I've only heard Asanuma Shintarou (Masaki's VA) sing in a higher register, so this was both surprising and pleasant—it's quite soothing to hear! It's also fitting that the only Real Adult™️ with bounds of experience compared to these young'uns gets a really poetic and dramatic song with, of course, lots of moon references.
Kyoumei
Mod Yumi: THIS IS THE BEST ONE. This song is a legit bop omg. Leave it to luck life to give us a character song that exceeds typical character songs! I also love the meaning of the lyrics; it almost feels like a new angle on the Shuu/Minato relationship in a way? Of course we know their history and their affectionate rivalry, but we don't really see either of them putting into words how they feel about each other (especially Shuu-- I had to laugh at the line "we didn't need mundane words"; like no dude we could actually use a few more words from you, given your track record of communicating approximately 7% of your thoughts smh). This song puts into words how much they mean to each other and how, despite their complicated history and rivalry, they still care about each other.
Mod Optimus Prime: Luck Life actually composed this song, which really shows in the style (that catchy guitar, anyone?)! I adore the constant references to "sounds"—while a bit cheesy and on those nose, of course, it fits these two to a T and calls back to that season one finale. Again, not that any of the songs are really subtle, but "We might be apart, but I believe we'll someday return / So we didn't need mundane words" really just sums up their unique friendship/rivalry. Also, love how the two only sing together at the end: really fits with the song's whole message/theme about the two being separated, but eventually reuniting! How sweet.

Tsurune Audio Drama: A Shot of Color 5 Girls are hard to understand?
Kacchan wdym you don't remember their birthdays...
Nanao: Let’s see… We’ve got the steak, garlic, oh what about the butter? Kaito: We have it. Rice fried in butter instead of just oil is heaps tastier after all. Nanao: It sure is~ It’s been a while since we were in charge of cooking for the family dinner so I’m feeling pretty fired up! Kaito: Been a while since we’ve gone to the mall too. Huh? Hey, that’s Ryohei, ain’t it? Nanao: Oh, yeah it is. Kaito: He’s looking at some really flashy, fashionable magazine? Nanao: …Hmm? Do you think it could be— Kaito: Oiii, Ryohei! Nanao: Wha– Kacchan!! Ryohei: Huh?! Ah, Kaito and Nanao! Are you two out shopping? Kaito: Yeah, we’re doing groceries for family dinner night. What about you? You buy stuff like scented candles? Ryohei: Oh, no, it’s not for me. I’m looking for presents. Kaito: For who? Nanao: Could be anybody~ Right, Ryohei? Ryohei: It’s my sister’s birthday soon, see. Kaito: Your sister… Nanao: Oh, so it was just for your sister… Kaito: What’ve you been on about anyway? Ryohei: I get her something every year, so I’m running out of ideas and it’s been bothering me. Nanao: Felt… Kaito: You get your sisters something every year…?! Ryohei: Oh, right. Both of you have sisters too! Could you tell me what you get them for their birthdays? I could use the help! Nanao: No prob~ My little sister’s a second year in middle school so she seems into stuff that might pop off on social media. I get her accessories and things, but just the cheap kinds. Kaito: She’s acting too mature for a middle schooler…! Ryohei: Accessories, huh… My big sis isn’t really the type to use ‘em, I think. Nanao: You even know about those things, huh~ Kaito: What about you, Kaito? You’ve got two older sisters, right? Nanao: The eldest, Yuu-neechan, is 19; then the second, Minami-neechan, is 17. Ryohei: They’re pretty close in age with my sister! Please tell me what you’ve been getting them as gifts! Nanao: So what do you say, Kacchan? Kaito: ... Kaito: …I forgot. Ryohei: What?? But they happen twice a year! Kaito: Now, look, who remembers their sisters’ birthdays anyway? Do you just go about your day and go “Ah, my sister’s birthday is soon, what present should I get her?” or something?? Ryohei: Yeah. Nanao: Pretty much. Kaito: No you don’t!! Ryohei: Huh?! Nanao: How about this, Ryohei, let me add something onto Kacchan's poorly worded response, ’kay? Ryohei: Yeah? Nanao: Do you love your sister? Ryohei: As much as anyone would, yeah. Nanao: Then in that case I think she loves you maybe twice, no– thrice, as much. Ryohei: Is that how it works? Nanao: Yep. As for the Onogi family we have, his two older sisters, then Kacchan. He’s the youngest, but he’s also the first born son. Ryohei: Yeah. Nanao: So, if Kacchan were to give his sisters birthday gifts then… Kaito: If we add my mom in the mix all the women at my house just get all loud and annoying. Ryoheii: Doesn’t that just mean they’re happy?
Kaito: I wouldn’t call those reactions happy at all! It’s more like you threw a chunk of meat at a pack of lions! Ryohei: Lions!? Nanao: Was it the other year? When you gave Yuu-neechan hand cream and she went arounf putting it on everybody in the family saying, “I got this from Kaa-kun~” Kaito: Don’t remind me… Nanao: And when you gave Minami-neechan a dumbbell and she got pissed and said, “Are you trying to say that I’m fat?!”. We got her to calm down but that was a tough time, huh~ Kaito: She was the one who kept going on about how she got all fat so I got her the dumbbell, what’d she get mad at me for?! Nanao: She might be your sister but she’s still a girl, y’know? Giving a girl something that hints at her weight or at dieting on her birthday is just looking for trouble. Kaito: Hah? This know-it-all attitude of yours is getting real old, Nanao. Nanao: I feel like you being unable to just honestly accept love from people around you is a bigger problem, though~ Kaito: Ha? You wanna go? Ryohei: C’mon, guys! No fighting! Alright, how about this; I’ll get her an accessory, some hand cream, and a dumbbell, then let her pick what she likes from it? Kaito and Nanao: That’s a little too much!!

june vibes
damn i abandoned this monthly top 10 music of mine tracker thingy since last march. oh well!!! let's do this again. as always the song is rapidly changed one by one... i'm a seasonal listener...
Let's start out with 夏霞 / Natsu-kasumi (Summer Haze) by Atarayo. The first time I listened to this duet of a song? Damn... It's ethereal. I like how both of the guy and girl vocalist blend and complements one another. Guess, it's about love in the summer. Purely from sound, it's somber and regretful. I'm reading the lyrics right now. And yes, it does reflect regret. The singer(s) reminiscent about the precious memories they shared one another in the summer, the fireworks, the festival, the confession. Not wanting to be hurt by those feelings, wanting to be wrapped in the haze of the summer. Aww... :-(
Second is なかよしステップ / Nakayoshi Step (BFF STEP) by kinoshita. I'm surprised this song got in, turned out I liked it that much! Kinoshita is a Vocaloid producer that's easily known for his high-paced, energetic and cheerful songs. This one is one of them. The video is also as cute, featuring Una and Rin doing this simple dance steps. Please. Purely from soung, it's about the joy of having a BFF (which I lack) so sing out the joy for my stead!!! The lyrics, is well. It's indeed about having a friend so close and having fun. AHHH the lyrics is so cute. "I know, I know It'll get through you. It's not just words! I'm putting this music together for you, tu-turu-tuu, a BFF melody." It must've been a precious thing to have, a friend... :-(
Flash Forward by Le Sserafim... I swear I've found this song just yesterday. How come it's sitting pretty at third, I don't know. I like this song mainly because it's something I'd listen rather than their more fierce and stronger song. Sakura also got a lot of lines, so it's a plus! The vibe is breezy and chill, and it seems about just, I don't know. Keeping some feelings to a crush kind of song...
Next is また夏を追う / Mata Natsu wo Ou (To Chase the Summer Again) by Atarayo. What's up with this group and song about Summer?! It may or may not be the sequel to Natsugasumi. It's also got similiar vibe, regretful and holding onto something. I think it's about, moving on after a breakup in Summer. The singer is the one who walked away, but they felt it need to be done. Though regretful, they still want to chase another Summer.
Tentang Rumahku by Dialog Dini Hari is one of the song I found on these Spotify spotlight someone made based on a book. This one, I found for Laut Bercerita's playlist. Before this, I was so shallow because I dismissed the song in my native language since they're usually sappy love song which I detest for no particular reason. But I figured I'd be open. And I'm sure there's always some song for each person. At first it reminds me of Mara's character. Her home which lacks an important someone. It also reminds me of Laut himself, perhaps a song fitting when he's deep down in the sea, reminiscing the dear family and home he grew up. Ahh... I need to read that book again. The lyrics are relatively simple to understand, and at the core of it, I think it's about home and how it's truly an important place where one grew and become theirself. A keeper of memories and all the important thing in the world. One can be happy at their home.
まるつけ / Marutsuke performed by Yano Shougo. It's the ending theme for the anime Given. I watched it few months back then, and contrary to popular's opinion I think it's hands down the best song out of the series. (I don't plan to watch the movie so, yeah.) The song is so powerful, and carrying the weight of sorrow in the same place. Reading the lyrics, I felt like it kind of tells a story of the singer with a big amount of doubt about, well, his feeling. Love, I assume. Love, unsure of how it can stay and how it can perservere. Knowing the context with the anime, it seems so depressing. Talk about the anime, I saw some manga spoilers and noped out. The anime itself is so angst-heavy and there's a lot of drama. I don't need more... (Also love triangle trope sucks...) but the song itself is so good. Mafuyu's VA is perfect fit for his hoarse and yet soft-ish kind of voice. Conveying the feeling of desperation and cries of help.
The way I stayed like 40 minutes writing all of this but I can't stay still for mere 10 minutes writing my thesis I'm💀 Okay, I'm going to make the rest quick.
Maigo Hanyuu is another Vocaloid producer with their characteristics of traditional Japanese sounds incorporated for their songs. 鬼の居ぬ間に / Oni no Inumani (While the Demon is Away) seems like it's telling a story about someone staying by another one's side... Wait... It's just a quick interpretation. It could be also about a story when someone is left behind by a passed away person, still, they lived for both of them. Though perhaps they griefed, unable to accept that the other isn't there anymore, hence, preparing meals for two, lamenting the time they spent in the world, can't help until the demon or death itself took them. Wow. Huh??!!?
Next is 阿吽のビーツ / Aun no Beats (Aun Beats), also a classic by Maigo Hanyuu. Angsty tragic pair of love, I assume... From the sounds alone, there's regret, longing, and desperation. "I held up my heart to you. Give it back someday, be gentle, okay? I really wanted to go back. Going back after this is fine too." What I loved about Hanyuu's work for this one, is the usage of English loanswords paired with the traditional Japanese sounds. It's!!!! It's so cool. I think this post described and analyzed the song well...
Next is 死んではいけない / Shinde wa Ikenai (You Musn't Die, stylised Don't Go) by Shimizu Kou. I spent like 10 minutes looking for lyrics for this song and I couldn't find it. Turned out it's because the song isn't simply Ikanaide in the original title... Oh well... The song is a vibe. Len, the vocal, is tuned well. It seems like it's a thematical song, so it tells a story. But I'm running out of time...
I really need to stop here. But Sparkling Daydream by ZAQ is the opening theme for the anime Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! I haven't watched it in forever. But it popper in my mind and it's still a banger. That's it!
That's for June. Wow! I typed a lot. WOW...
