bs stands for.

it starts sweet. it always does.

with cotton candy kisses. literally. she’s always got something sweet in her mouth and this time it’s cotton candy ice cream. so so much of it that it’s filling her cheeks, sticking to her hands and keeping her mouth shut.

areum eats when she’s stressed, when she’s nervous, she eats a lot but she eats sweets more. and she’s always loved this cafe because they do waffle cones AND they do pastries. she asked for ice cream in a bun once and they thought she was kidding. it’s become something of a regular spot for her. when her and hyunwoo. speaking of hyunwoo he’s here too. he doesn’t quite match the aesthetic of the cafe but he tries. he’s all black, short sleeves, nose piercing, fists tats and all.

he’s quiet, not any different from usual but then again he’s never the first to ask her to join him at the cafe. it’s always her. texting, asking, pounding at the keyboard and spreading her cheeks thin. smiling so hard so she knows it’ll be permanent.

and most things are permanent. the smile she has when she walks in this cafe. the look on her face whenever hyunwoo shows up, kisses her cheek and orders her favorite. permanent, fulfilling for as long as she can hold them.

today he doesn’t do either. doesn’t kiss her forehead, doesn’t order for her, leans forward and watches. he’s careful with his blows but she feels them coming. always knowing where to strike so that she keeps the same permanence on her face.

“don’t you think you’re eating too much?”

even when he says things like that. even when he’s smiling but he’s cutting without moving an inch. he’s always careful areum notices that. doesn’t envy it as much as she studies it. she doesn’t move either, just lets the last piece fall past her lips, the only sweet thing she ever gets when they’re together.

‘i’ve only had two.’ it’s true. one slice of cake and a blueberry scone. she says it sweetly, as she’s been taught and as she knows he likes to hear it, lips pouted and hands in her lap. if it’s like this she thinks it’ll all be okay. instead his eyes fall to the fork and clean plate.

“I spend too much money on our cafe dates, I’m getting tired of watching you scarf down food.” ‘but I don’t----’ “you do.”

areum’s mother had been clear about things like this. when they speak, you shut it. even if they shut you to speak. It was for her safety because areum used to be the one speaking too much. so she learned to shut much how a lady learns to fold clothes. folding her mouth and words to fit what’s expected of her. usually it’s easy, usually. with her mouth full and her cheeks puffed, it’s become a little harder. 

“listen.” he takes her hand, moves it away from the comfort she finds in small crumbs on the plate. “you’ve gotta understand, I want to be able to show you off. don’t you think you’d be better on my arm and not eating so much? what about your figure hm?”

what about her figure? but she doesn’t say anything, swallows the last bits of blueberry and her last set of resolve. 

”Is something wrong with my figure?” “I don’t date you for your appetite.”

in her mind, everything goes as planned. 

she spits. leftover pieces of pastries, hair out her face as she yells, curses out her lips as she stands up. she spits out all she’s held in and swallowed, all hard and ripe from months of being held down. she stands up and calls him all the names she’s thought of, all the opposites of the praise she’s given him, all the opposite of what her parents expect. 

she calls it all, yells it, flips her hair and walks out with three more scones in her hand, victory on her lips. that’s how it goes. 

and it’d be so sweet.

the reality is, her pushing the plate away, pushing her lips out in quick submission and a nod. the reality is Hyunwoo placing a kiss to her forehead and excusing himself.

“don’t call me back to the cafe again okay?”

all she gets is a kiss and a trap snapped shut for the tenth time.

and it’s only bittersweet.
