You meet Megumi one day, not too long after the debrief for the next mission is done. Quiet black haired kid who you sit in silence with at the park until he speaks up. The kid talks about some new book he read recently, and it goes on for a few hours. No sign of his parents anywhere, or worry from the kid either. Which is odd behavior so in favor of preventing a kidnap, you decide to stay until his mom or dad comes. Most parents and especially moms would be worried for their kid at this point, no?

You treat him to a meal around evening, letting him choose where, then he asks probably the strangest question you could hear from a kid this age.

"Will you adopt me?"

"Im sorry?" You're baffled as he looks at you with full intention.

"Oh wait." He stops to think for a second, and you stare at him hoping the kid hasnt lost his mind. After a second of his pondering, he opens his mouth again, "Will you adopt me, please?"

"Don't you have parents?"

"My dad is a widow."

You choke. Surely he's not serious?

There's nothing but sincerity in his eyes, but you're not sure if thats a good thing right now.

"You do know widow is for the wife in the relationship, right?"

"I don't respect him enough for that, hes big and forgets about me." Truthful and blunt, wonderful.

You stare at the kid, who sits next to you on the bench sipping his drink peacefully. It is strange said father hasn't come looking.

"Are you smart?"

He shrugs. "Good enough"

You believe the kid, based on the 2 hour conversation about his theoreticals and how stupid the book was you figure he isn't lying.

"Then I'll consider it." Megumi nods in response, your answer being good enough for him.

A tall black-haired man dressed formally comes walking up to you, and you think it's the kid's dad.

Megumi throws the man a quick unalarmed glance, "Shiu, tell my dad I found a new mom and don't need him anymore."

Nevermind.

Three weeks later you're newly married and acquainting yourself with a (very large) gruff man whos name is Toji Fushiguro. His son is the spitting image of him (scarily). He mostly accepted your proposal because of the cover up it provides (not that he'd ever get caught anyways), but also because of Megumi.

Your husband of 5 hours lounges on the couch and cant help but wonder if this is what his late wife wanted for him and Megumi. He shrugs it off quickly as he watches you explain the new school and its systems to Megumi. Who just nods along and accepts the snacks you hand him.
