LUCKNOW, India (Reuters) -At least 35 people were killed and 16 were injured after the roof of a stepwell in a temple complex collapsed in central India, a local government official said on Friday.
The incident occurred in the central Indian city of Indore after a concrete slab covering the roof of a stepwell in a temple complex collapsed, crushing devotees who had gathered to celebrate the Hindu festival of Ram Navami on Thursday, officials said.
Stepwells are a common feature across India, built hundreds of years ago, many of them ornately decorated, with access to a body of water through stairs and niches.
"The stepwell was covered, but the slab covering it collapsed because of the crowd and extra load on it," Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the central Indian state where Indore is located, told reporters late on Thursday.
At least 75 army and rescue personnel worked through the day to remove debris, using ropes and ladders to pull out people who had fallen into the well, local media reported.
"We have rescued 18 people, 35 have been found dead and 16 are injured," Ilayaraja T, a top local government official, told Reuters.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and announced compensation for the dead and injured in the incident.

Shivraj Chouhan to Lead Monthly Monitoring of PM Modi’s Initiatives
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appointed Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to head a new monitoring group tasked with overseeing the implementation of government schemes, budget announcements, and infrastructure projects. This initiative aims to enhance the effectiveness of various programs launched under Modi's leadership since 2014.
The inaugural meeting of the monitoring group took place on October 18 at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), attended by all secretaries of the Government of India, including the Chairman of the Railway Board, in a hybrid format. The group is set to convene monthly to ensure progress on government initiatives.
Chouhan has been granted the authority to assess ongoing projects and provide updates on those lagging in implementation. His role will involve coordinating with senior officers designated as nodal officers for different schemes. Key areas of focus will include reviewing announcements made on the PM's portal, projects for which foundation stones have been laid, and subordinate legislation requiring rule framing.
While details about the monitoring group's activities remain limited, Chouhan's leadership is seen as a strategic response to address concerns regarding delays in scheme execution, which Modi has frequently highlighted in discussions with senior officials. With his reputation as an efficient administrator, Chouhan's oversight is expected to drive accountability and timely progress on critical government initiatives.

Union Minister of Agriculture, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, inaugurated the event, emphasizing the government’s commitment to achieving a national food grain production target of 341.55 million tonnes for the 2024-25 season. Chouhan stressed the importance of transitioning towards organic and natural farming practices to enhance productivity while reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers. He mentioned a committee has been established to lower transportation costs, bridging the gap between procurement and market prices. “States, in collaboration with the Centre, must work to adapt production strategies based on agro-climatic conditions to establish India as the world’s largest food basket,” he asserted. During the conference, Minister of State for Agriculture, Shri Ramnath Thakur, urged immediate actions to assist farmers impacted by floods and cyclones, while highlighting the necessity of evaluating the quality of agricultural inputs in the market. Minister of State, Shri Bhagirath Choudhary, expressed gratitude towards research organizations for their ongoing efforts to achieve self-reliance in pulse and oilseed production. The event featured esteemed panelists from various state governments, who engaged in discussions on enhancing productivity in oilseeds and pulses, digital platforms like the National Pest Surveillance System (NPSS), and initiatives under the Digital Agriculture Mission, including the Seed Authentication, Traceability & Holistic Inventory (SATHI) portal. A key focus of the discussions was the government’s goal to increase oilseed production from 39.2 million metric tonnes (MMT) in 2022-23 to 69.7 MMT by 2030-31. This initiative includes expanding the area under cultivation from 29 million hectares to 33 million hectares, and improving yields from 1353 kg/ha to 2112 kg/ha. The conference also highlighted recent Agri-Tech initiatives aimed at ensuring the quality of agricultural inputs and enhancing pest management strategies. The NPSS will provide a comprehensive approach to managing pest infestations, while the Integrated Pesticide Management System (IPMS) will address issues related to pesticide supply and misbranding. In the session on Digital Agriculture, panelists discussed the recently approved Digital Agriculture Mission, which aims to create a farmer-centric ecosystem through integrated registries and advisory services. Addressing the need for quality planting materials, Dr. Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary of Agriculture, instructed states to complete the farmer registry by March 31, 2025, to facilitate access to the PM-KISAN scheme. He also urged for better management of pesticides and the circulation of quality agricultural inputs. The conference concluded with a session where state representatives raised issues regarding agriculture, emphasizing the necessity of a holistic approach, mechanization for oilseeds and pulses, and the importance of quality seeds. The involvement of the private sector in agricultural research and improvements in pest management were also discussed. Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan highlights Cabinet nod to MSP for rabi crops New Delhi [India], October 16 (ANI): Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had resolved that the crops would be purchased at atleast 50 per cent profit above the cost of production to the farmers. "PM Modi had resolved that the crops would be purchased from farmers at atleast 50 percent profit above the cost of production," Shivraj Singh Chouhan said. Earlier in the day, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the increase in the Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for all mandated Rabi Crops for the Marketing Season 2025-26. "Central Government notifies MSP for 6 crops in Rabi marketing season for 2025-26. The MSP for wheat is fixed at Rs 2,425 per quintal for RMS 2025-26, barley is Rs 1,980 per quintal, gram is Rs 5,650 per quintal, lentil (masur) is Rs 6,700 per quintal, rapeseed and mustard is Rs 5,950 per quintal, and safflower is Rs 5,940 per quintal. There has been an increase of Rs 150 per quintal over the current MSP for wheat, an increase of Rs 130 per quintal over the current MSP for barley, an increase of Rs 210 per quintal over the current MSP for gram, an increase of Rs 275 per quintal over the current MSP for lentil (Masur), an increase of Rs 300 per quintal over the current MSP for rapeseed and mustard and an increase of Rs 140 per quintal over the current MSP for safflower," he said. "The profit on the cost is 105 percent for wheat, 60 percent for barley, 60 percent for grams, 89 percent for lentil, 98 percent on mustard, and 50 percent for safflower. The Congress government never did this. The central government is taking various steps for the benefit of farmers. If you see the comparison between 2014 and 2024 then MSP for wheat was Rs 1400 per quintal, Barley was Rs 1100 per quintal, Grams was Rs 3100 per quintal, lentil was Rs 2950 per quintal, mustard was Rs 3050 and safflower was Rs 3000 per quintal," he added. According to a release, the government has increased the MSP of Rabi Crops to ensure remunerative prices to the growers for their produce. The absolute highest increase in MSP has been announced for Rapeseed & Mustard at Rs 300 per quintal followed by Lentil (Masur) at Rs 275 per quintal. The decision was announced on Wednesday by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw after the Cabinet meeting held today. For gram, wheat, safflower, and barley, there is an increase of Rs 210 per quintal, Rs150 per quintal, Rs140 per quintal, and Rs130 per quintal respectively. The increase in MSP for mandated Rabi Crops for Marketing Season 2025-26 is in line with the Union Budget 2018-19 announcement of fixing the MSP at a level of at least 1.5 times of the All-India weighted average cost of production. The expected margin over all-India weighted average cost of production is 105 percent for wheat, followed by 98 percent for rapeseed & mustard; 89 percent for lentil; 60 percent for gram; 60 percent for barley; and 50 percent for safflower. This increased MSP of rabi crops will ensure remunerative prices to the farmers and incentivise crop diversification. (ANI)

“Even Rahul Gandhi’s Seven Generations Can’t Restore Article 370” : Shivraj Chouhan Targets Congress and Farooq Abdullah
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, in a fiery speech, launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah over the issue of Article 370. Chouhan stated that even if "seven generations of Rahul Gandhi" attempted to do so, they would never succeed in restoring Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. The remark came as part of an ongoing political discourse surrounding the abrogation of Article 370 and its long-term implications for the region.
During a public rally, Chouhan accused the Congress and its leaders of consistently siding with forces that weaken India's national integrity. He directly criticised Rahul Gandhi for his previous comments on Jammu and Kashmir and implied that the Congress has often failed to prioritise national interests in critical situations. Chouhan’s statement was aimed at portraying Gandhi as disconnected from the sentiments of the people who supported the scrapping of Article 370 in August 2019.
Chouhan also took the opportunity to lash out at Farooq Abdullah, who has been a vocal critic of the abrogation. Abdullah, along with other regional leaders, has expressed his desire for the reinstatement of Article 370, arguing that it is crucial for maintaining the autonomy and identity of Jammu and Kashmir. However, Chouhan dismissed such aspirations, stating that leaders like Abdullah are misleading the people of the region. "Farooq Abdullah should stop dreaming about restoring Article 370. That chapter is closed for good," Chouhan remarked, signalling the BJP's firm stand on the issue.
The abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 by the Narendra Modi-led government sparked significant debate across the political spectrum. The BJP hailed it as a historic decision that would ensure Jammu and Kashmir’s full integration with India and promote peace and development in the region. On the other hand, opposition parties, including Congress, and regional leaders from Jammu and Kashmir have continuously opposed the move, calling it unconstitutional and detrimental to the state's autonomy.
Farooq Abdullah, along with his son Omar Abdullah, has vowed to continue the fight for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. Meanwhile, Chouhan’s remarks reflect the BJP’s broader strategy of portraying opposition leaders as being out of touch with nationalistic concerns. By invoking Article 370 and targeting leaders like Rahul Gandhi and Farooq Abdullah, Chouhan aims to rally support for the BJP on the basis of national unity and security as key electoral issues.
As the political landscape heats up, the debate over Article 370 is likely to remain a central point of contention between the ruling BJP and opposition parties. For more politics news in Hindi, subscribe to our newsletter

Embracing Agricultural Innovation: The Future of Lac Farming and Tractor Maintenance
In a recent address at the ICAR-National Institute of Secondary Agriculture (NISA), President Droupadi Murmu underscored the vital role of agricultural diversification in enhancing farmers' incomes and tackling pressing challenges such as food security and climate change. One notable initiative highlighted during the celebration was lac farming, a practice that has been integral to the livelihood of tribal communities for generations.
Lac, a resin secreted by specific insects, is a crucial resource, especially for rural and tribal economies. Its versatility spans industries like pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, where demand is steadily growing. By improving the quality and marketing of Indian lac, farmers can secure better prices for their products, creating a sustainable source of income. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan further emphasized the need to increase the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for lac, making it a more viable option for farmers.
Supporting Lac Farming with Modern Tractor Maintenance
As farming techniques evolve to include practices like lac cultivation, it is essential to ensure that the tools and machinery used by farmers are in peak condition. This is where Tractor Seva comes in. At Tractor Seva, we are committed to supporting farmers by offering superior tractor maintenance services at affordable prices. With proper support from government initiatives and increased MSP for products like lac, India can secure a brighter future for its farmers.

BJP's 'Bal Buddhi' Re-Plug On Rahul Gandhi's Ram Janmabhoomi Movement Claim
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's remarks on the Ram Janmabhoomi movement led by BJP veteran Lal Krishna Advani has drawn a sharp response, with the BJP doubling down on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "childish mind" jab at Mr Gandhi.
BJP veteran and Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan described Rahul Gandhi as "bal buddhi" (childish) and accused him of "spreading confusion and lies".
"Rahul Gandhi is a childish person who has not matured yet. He has not yet become the Leader of the Opposition properly. He says we (INDIA bloc) defeated the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. Rahul ji, Ram is our existence, our ideal, our life, our God, and Ram is the identity of India," Mr Chouhan told reporters.
Referring to the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, he said, "This movement has thrown the Congress out of power many times and paved the way for the construction of a divine and grand temple, but Rahul Gandhi only lies."
Mr Chouhan also accused Mr Gandhi of lying in Parliament about Agniveer martyrs and the government of not providing a Minimum Support Price.
"He (Rahul) knows nothing else other than lying and spreading confusion. That is why this 'Bal Buddhi' person Rahul Gandhi keeps saying anything that comes to his mind. No one understands how he was able to defeat the (Ram Mandir) movement.
"Just saying whatever comes to mind has become the tendency of the Congress. Under his (Rahul Gandhi) leadership, the Congress will invite only misfortune," he added.
BJP leaders have been infantilising Mr Gandhi and saying he has a "childish mind" after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "balak buddhi" jab at the Congress MP, now Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha.
The remarks in question were made by the Congress leader during his visit to Ahmedabad. He was speaking about the Faizabad Lok Sabha seat -- of which Ayodhya is a part -- by Congress ally Samajwadi Party.
"By defeating the BJP in Ayodhya, INDIA bloc has defeated the Ram Mandir movement that was launched by the BJP veteran Lal Krishna Advani. What I am saying is something very big… Congress party and INDIA bloc defeated them in Ayodhya," Mr Gandhi said Saturday.
The Rath Yatra was launched by Mr Advani to shore up support for the construction of a temple at the site in Ayodhya believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram. The yatra was taken out in 1990 and multiple communal clashes were reported along its route. Two years later, the 16th century Babri Masjid located at the Ayodhya site was demolished by Hindu activists who believed it was built on the ruins of an ancient temple to mark Ram's birthplace. Nearly three decades later, a Supreme Court ruling paved the way for a construction of a Ram Temple at the site.
With the BJP playing up the Ram temple construction in its election campaign, the Faizabad election was keenly watched, and the BJP's defeat there was a key talking point on result day.
While speaking in Ahmedabad, Mr Gandhi also claimed that the BJP would be defeated in its stronghold Gujarat in the 2027 state polls. "Together we are going to defeat them in Gujarat. We will defeat Narendra Modi and BJP in Gujarat just like we defeated them in Ayodhya," Mr Gandhi said.
This would be quite a task because in the 2022 election, the BJP swept the state, winning 156 of the 182 Assembly seats and the Congress managed just 17.
Mr Gandhi's remarks also drew the criticism of Chirag Paswan, Union Minister and leader of BJP's ally Lok Janshakti Party (Ramvilas).
Responding to the Congress leader's remarks, he said, "First up of all, Rahul Gandhi should learn it is Faizabad Lok Sabha, not Ayodhya. Ayodhya is a Vidhan Sabha constituency and is part of it. In such cases, if they think Ayodhya's win is big for them, then we are also analysing our mistakes and working towards it. They couldn't even cross the mark of 100+ seats in Lok Sabha and are claiming big things, I think their pride won't stay for long. In upcoming days, there are elections in various states, the results will show how strong NDA is."
