Your Tempura is The Best

After accompanying Hisa for his smoke break, I went inside the hotel, finding the low self esteemed staff member in the lobby. He was reading the guest book and didn't hear me go in.

“Shin-chan!”

The black haired young boy jolted, the guest book went flying behind him. “Kai-san! You scared me!”

“More like you’re too easy to get surprised, Shinyan.” I propped myself on the counter.

The staff member picked up the book and stored it in the counter storage. Shin’ya stood up, looked at me, and took a step back.

“Why are you so scared? I won't bite, you know,” I grinned, “Not you, at least.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” The boy looked so confused. It’s so fun to tease him.

“Don't teach him weird things, Kai.”

A hand tapped my shoulder and a strong scent of tobacco filled my nose. Ah.. Hisa’s finished.

“Alright, Darling,” I watched as Hisa made his way to the hallway. He would clean the guests' room, I assumed. “Keep up the good work!”

My eyes went back to Shin’ya. Looked like he also watched Hisa walk away. He noticed me watching him and now he’s all anxious again.

“You won't take Hisa away from me!” I teased him.

Shin’ya took another step back and went into defensive mode, “Wa- Wait, it’s not! It’s not-!”

I couldn't hold my laughter anymore. “Just kidding, Shin-chan, I’m just kidding.”

I didn't think he understood what happened, his big eyes kept blinking as I cried out these happy tears.

“Ah, by the way,” I said while wiping the last tears on my eyes, “I ate you tempura yesterday. It was perfect! Sooo delicious. Where did you learn how to cook them?”

Shin’ya was used to surprises, but he’s certainly not used to getting compliments. It seemed like he’s loading. There was no reaction for some moments.

“Excuse me, sorry?”

Yep, he’s definitely not used to getting compliments at all. “What do you mean ‘excuse me, sorry?’ I just said I love your cooking!”

“There must have been some mistake. I don't cook that well,” Shin’ya looked down. I’m getting confused.

“There were no mistakes. I repeat that again. NO MISTAKES. Your tempura is delicious! I licked all the sauces clean!”

Shin’ya froze again.

“Alright, listen. This is a life lesson from your dependable old man. If someone gives you compliments, you should be happy and say ‘thank you’ instead.”

The young boy nodded, hesitantly. That’s good enough for me. “Okay, Shin’ya. I love your cooking!”

Shin’ya’s not responding.

“So you say?” I feel like I’m talking to a pure elementary school boy, he’s so adorable.

“Th- Thank you?” He finally responded.

“Yes. Let’s practice that again.” I stood properly and then dramatically, eagerly said, “Shin-chaaaan! Your tempura is the beeeest!!!”

Shin’ya gulped and made a crooked smile, “Thank yeeww.”

“That’s my boy!” I clapped my hands. He learns fast. That’s good. “So, a serious question. When is your next shift in the restaurant? I wanna eat your cooking again.”
