"I finally can be honest with my feelings now. I don't have to hold it in. I don't have to suffer. I'm getting divorced. You'll be living together with your father fron now on. I'm going to live together with Ryoma. I hate having to deal with what torments me more than anything... You."

Things I would like to see in HNS specials, assuming none of them get covered:
- shou and maki's mom meeting; when shou met maki; possibly when shou met maki's father, considering he probably knew them when they were still married - cool background characters - sakurai and his past with teaching sports (which we may be getting once they explain "the incident" but) - maki's dad getting beaten up by some guys in an alleyway (ASMR version) - rintarou's childhood, showing how much his parents loved him - when the soft tennis club met and all their relationships to each other - naime ameno and kei takada hanging out. maybe causing mischief or doing whatever they do when they're not playing sports.  - ryouma, maki, and touma's past together (which they might get to if they have time) - shou having that conversation with maki. shou having that conversation with maki. shou having that conversation with maki.

My unasked for take as to why Toma’s mom is the way she is, an unnecessary long essay.
Stating the obvious,
Toma Shinjo and his mother have a very dysfunctional relationship, that kind of goes without saying. She believes he doesnt work hard enough, that he’ll never amount to anything his brother has accomplished. There’s also an obvious that there’s a double standard between Toma and Ryoma. She scolds Toma for skipping practice, while seemingly not doing anything about Ryoma skipping work--evidence of her reaction hasn’t been shown, but guessing by how she already treats him, she probably allowed it. She also doesn’t refer to Toma by his name whenever she talks about him with Ryoma, usually just saying “that boy” in reference to him. As if she’s disowned him even before the divorce.
About Toma,
From my perspective as an autistic person, I’m pretty set in stone about Toma being heavily autism coded. While he hasn’t shown signs of having sensory issues, at least from what I’ve seen, he has clear signs of having social issues, flat affect, special interest rest--soft tennis, it’s debatable if that’s by choice, however... but that’s a can of worms--all traits shared with autism. It could also be noted that Ryoma doesn’t seem to share any signs if autism, and if he does he’s super good at masking.
What does this mean to their relationship?
It’s sadly common for parents to resent their children for having a disability, and I believe that this is an instance of such. Autism is typically presented in media as this big bad that splits marriages apart and makes everything hard for the people being affected but never the affected because reasons. I have the impression Toma’s mom doesn’t view Toma as her child, but rather a creature that just so happens to share DNA with her. Evident by the fact she doesn’t refer to him by his name, describes es him as “different”, and straight up says that she hates him. There are honestly very few people I’d say I hate, let alone my own child. In the case Ryoma also has autism and is just masking for the sake of his mom it could also put Toma’s mom into the headspace that, yes I can change my children from acting like this, it worked with Ryoma but it’s not working with Toma, Toma must be a bad kid, why won’t Toma listen to me, Ryoma used to act like this and now he’s normal, why won’t it work with Toma, I hate Toma for being uncooperative, yack yack yack, blah blah blah.
I don’t know how to end this lmao, don’t abuse children ?

About Ryoma and his mom...
Tumblr media
Okay I’m just gonna dump this theory here because I see way too many people blaming Ryoma for Shinjomom’s abuse.
Yes, Ryoma is the favorite, but I honestly don’t think he loves his mom.
To be honest, I think Ryoma is being/has been groomed by her since childhood.
I have a couple reasons for this theory, one of them being that pretty much every form of abuse has been addressed except for CSA. Initially, I thought maybe Taiyo would have ended up being abused but his parents seem normal, if a bit overbearing.
I see a lot of people saying that the ending of Ep 11 means that he’s enabling her abuse, but he really doesn’t seem happy about what’s happening.
Tumblr media
This is not the face of someone who’s happy about this arrangement.
Then there’s the dialogue right after.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He still doesn’t look happy, he looks upset. In the next episode, the “protection” he seems to be giving is moving in with his mom, which makes me think that she threatened to hurt Toma (and his unidentified other brother) if Ryoma didn’t agree with her.
And there is evidence she has threatened Toma in front of Ryoma in the past, particularly this scene from Episode 1.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We don’t know if Ryoma stayed for dinner that night (the time that would happen is focused on Maki and his shit dad), but it’s still solid evidence that she has used him as leverage before.
And also, Ryoma clearly cares about Toma.
Tumblr media
He desperately wanted to see Toma’s match, sprinting too it, and the fact that their mom was having this conversation during that time makes me think she’s purposely isolating him.
Hell, in her split, she’s taking Ryoma, a grown ass college man, with her. Usually in a divorce scenario, both kids will stay with one parent. We know she hates Toma, but why take Ryoma with her? If it was just that she was her favorite and nothing more, it kind of makes sense, but even still, he’s in college. He’s an adult. He should be able to make his own decisions.
She even has his phone, which either means A) he was in such a rush to see Toma’s game that he forgot it (because he cares about him that much), or B) she purposefully took it from him.
I lean more towards B because she answers with:
Tumblr media
“Who is this?” meaning she either didn’t check the caller ID (because an older brother would most likely have his younger’s brother in his contacts, especially Toma has him in his), or she deleted Toma’s contact from his phone.
There is a lot of isolation of Ryoma going on in the background. It’s almost similar to Nao’s mom, except Shinjomom doesn’t seem to care about Ryoma’s grades or his job, just...him being there with her.
I honestly would be surprised if the original plan for HNS was for Ryoma to be revealed as being abused by her, and him going along with it out of fear she would hurt Toma or his unidentified other brother.
Again, he is not happy about moving in with her.
Tumblr media
When he sees Toma just got off the phone with her, and how pissed he is, he’s mad in return.
This isn’t a guy who absolutely adores his mom and hates his younger brother, this is someone who knows exactly what’s going on that he’s being torn away from his family, but feels powerless to stop it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ryoma loves his brother, he knows what his mother is doing is wrong, but he feels like he can’t stop it. If he does, Toma could be hurt.
This also can tie into his close relationship with Maki.
Tumblr media
Ryoma and Maki have stayed close despite Maki’s moving away, even though Toma had no idea about Maki’s situation. Ryoma even has Maki’s phone number. It would make sense if, when they were young, Ryoma found out about Maki’s abuse and they ending up bonding over that.
I’m sad that HNS won’t be continuing, because I would have liked to see the Toma family situation explained and explored more. There’s a lot more going on here than it seems.

i do feel bad for ryouma. it must suck to be in that position; wanting to both appease your mom, who hates someone you love, but also support your brother bc no one else except his friends is. i bet he was trying to tell touma before his mother got to, but since he left his phone, he had to run to find him. that must be a scary thing to face. touma probably thinks ryouma betrayed him in some way, maybe. i bet he didn't want to call beforehand so that his match wouldn't be influenced with thoughts of divorce. i've gotta say spousification and heavy emotional reliance seem to be the cases for ryouma here. he's clearly favored, but you can tell it's more of a burden on him than anything. you could call it more mild abuse than others depicted in the show, but it is still most definitely a type of abuse and a type of emotional pedestal that can severely harm people mentally, regardless of age.
