Cleaning Shingle Roofs â A Step-by-Step Guide
Keep your homeâs roof from appearing old and dirty. Knowing how to properly clean a shingle roof helps maintain its curb appeal, allowing you to spot damage and defects before causing costly leaks.
New Image Roofing Atlanta assembled the following step-by-step guide, demonstrating how to clean a shingle roof, what not to do, and when to call a professional roofer.
Cleaning a Shingle Roof â âDosâ
Before starting the cleaning process, conduct a thorough roof inspection. Look for damaged or missing shingles, areas with excessive moss or algae growth, and any signs of wear and tear (granule loss or Hail Damage). Addressing these issues beforehand is crucial to prevent further damage during cleaning.
Verify Proper Drainage â Your roofâs ability to efficiently shed water is crucial to prevent dirt, mold, and mildew buildup. Make sure valleys, gutters, and downspouts are debris-free and allow water to quickly and naturally drain from your roofing system.
Use the Right Cleaning Solution â Choose a cleaning solution for shingle roofs. Avoid harsh chemicals (they can damage the shingles and harm the environment). A mixture of water, mild detergent, and oxygen-based bleach is excellent for removing stains and debris.
Protect Your Landscaping â Wet your plants and landscaping around your home before applying a cleaning solution. Cover delicate plants with tarps to prevent damage from the cleaning solution. Rinse the plants thoroughly after cleaning to remove any residual solution.
Apply Cleaning Solution Evenly â Use a low-pressure sprayer or a garden hose with a soft spray attachment to apply the cleaning solution evenly across the roof. Allow the solution to sit for the recommended time to break down stains and organic growth.
Tip: Eliminate any guesswork and read the cleaning solution product label for its recommended use (application and removal).
Gentle Brushing for Stubborn Stains â Use a soft-bristled brush or broom to gently scrub the surface for stubborn stains or areas with heavy moss or algae growth. Avoid using abrasive tools or harsh brushes that will damage the shingles.
Rinse Thoroughly â After the cleaning solution has had sufficient time to work, rinse the roof thoroughly with a garden hose or a pressure washer (set to low pressure). Start from the top (and work your way down) to ensure all cleaning residues are washed away.
Regular Maintenance â Establish a routine for regular roof maintenance. Cleaning your shingle roof annually or biannually, depending on your climate, can help prevent debris and organic matter buildup.
Tip: Request a Roof Maintenance Program quote from your roofer. In most cases, you can determine how many visits and which maintenance activities will be performed.
Cleaning a Shingle Roof â âDonâtsâ
Avoid High-Pressure Washing â While a pressure washer can be used for rinsing, avoid using high-pressure settings as they can severely damage shingles, dislodge granules, and compromise your roof integrity.
No Chlorine Bleach â Avoid using chlorine bleach (or other chlorine-based products) as a cleaning solution (it can discolor shingles), harm vegetation, and contribute to environmental pollution.
No Harsh Scrubbing â Refrain from using abrasive brushes, wire brushes, or tools that can scratch or gouge the shingle surface. Gentle scrubbing is sufficient to remove most stains without removing shingle granules.
Do Not Ignore Safety Precautions â Cleaning a roof can be hazardous (always prioritize safety). Use proper safety gear, including slip-resistant shoes, safety harnesses, and goggles. Work on dry days to minimize slip and fall risks.

When to Call a Professional Roofer
Extensive Damage â If your roof has extensive damage, like missing or damaged shingles, it is advisable to call a professional roofer. Attempting to clean a severely compromised roof without addressing underlying issues can worsen the damage significantly.
Steep Roofs â Steeply pitched roofs can be dangerous to navigate (especially without proper equipment). If your roof has a steep slope, it is safer to call a professional roofer with experience in roof cleaning.
Persistent Leaks â If you notice persistent leaks or water damage inside your home, it indicates potential roof issues. A professional roofer can assess the situation, identify the leak source, and recommend necessary repairs.
Lack of Experience â If you are uncomfortable or inexperienced in roof maintenance, it is best to call a professional. Roofers have the expertise, tools, and knowledge to properly clean and inspect roofs.
Aging Roofs â Older roofs may be more delicate and prone to damage. If your roof is aging, it is wise to consult a roofer who can assess its condition and recommend appropriate cleaning methods or repairs.
Shingle Roof Cleaning
In this article, you discovered how to properly clean a shingle roof without causing severe damage to its shingles.
Keeping your roof clean is crucial for its longevity and performance. It also helps maintain your homeâs curb appeal and value.
Accumulated dirt, algae, moss, and debris (over the years) can compromise a shingle roofâs appearance and functionality. A dirty or damaged roof can adversely affect your homeâs value.

Flashy Finish: Think of flashing as the elegant jewellery that complements a dazzling outfit. Placed strategically, they protect your roof from leaks, while ridge caps crown the masterpiece.
Maintenance Tips: How to Keep the Enchantment of Metal Roofing Shingles Alive?

"Amsterdamâs roofs have just been converted into a giant sponge that will make the city more climate resilient.
The Dutch have always been famous for their ability to control water, born out of the necessity of their homeland, much of which is below sea level.
Now, their expert water management skills are transforming the city skyline in the capital city of Amsterdam from one of terracotta tile, concrete, and shingles into green grass and brown earth.
Itâs part of a new climate-resiliency trend in architecture and civic planning known as the âsponge city concept,â in which a garden of water-loving plants, mosses, and soil absorbs excess rainwater before feeding it into the building for use in flushing toilets or watering plants on the ground.
If heavy rains are predicted, a smart valve system empties the stored rainwater into the municipal storm drains and sewers in advance of the weather, allowing the roof to soak up water and reduce flooding in the city.
In this way, the rooftops of buildings can be wrung out and filled up just like a sponge.
In Amsterdam, 45,000 square meters, or 11 acres of flat metropolitan rooftops have already been fitted with these systems, and the contracting firms behind the technology say they make sense in dry climates like Spain just as much as in wet climates like Amsterdam...
A 4-year project of different firms and organizations called Resilio, the resilient network for smart climate adaptive rooftops, rolled out thousands of square meters of sponge city technology into new buildings. As with many climate technologies, the costs are high upfront but tend to result in savings from several expenditures like water utilities and water damage, over a long-enough time horizon...
All together, Amsterdamâs sponge capacity is over 120,000 gallons.
âWe think the concept is applicable to many urban areas around the world,â Kasper Spaan from Waternet, Amsterdamâs public water management organization, told Wired Magazine. âIn the south of EuropeâItaly and Spainâwhere there are really drought-stressed areas, thereâs new attention for rainwater catchment.â
Indeed the sponge city concept comes into a different shade when installed in drought-prone regions. Waters absorbed by rooftops during heavy rains can be used for municipal purposes to reduce pressure on underground aquifers or rivers, or be sweated out under the Sunâs rays which cools the interior of the building naturally.
Additionally, if solar panels were added on top of the rooftop garden, the evaporation would keep the panels cooler, which has been shown in other projects to improve their energy generation.
âOur philosophy in the end is not that on every roof, everything is possible,â says Spaan, âbut that on every roof, something is possible.â
Matt Simon, reporting on the Resilio project for Wired, said succinctly that perhaps science fiction authors have missed the mark when it came to envisioning the city of the future, and that rather than being a glittering metropolis of glass, metal, and marble as smooth as a pannacotta, it will look an awful lot more like an enormous sculpture garden."

âTheyâ say that unattended cooking is the number one cause of kitchen fires, but I was standing right next to the oven when that pot full of carburetor cleaner went up in flames. Okay, not carb cleaner. I canât afford the good stuff. It was a pot full of Pine-Sol. Okay, Columbo, it was dollar-store brand imitation Pine-Sol, which is indeed flammable.
The most important thing to do in the event of a fire is not to panic. Luckily for me, my life experience consists of dealing with many fires. Panic is actually completely impossible for me at this point, as the part of my brain that handles the adrenaline response for such a disaster is no longer responsive to stimuli. Last doctor I had was pretty sure it had just burned itself straight out from over-use, did two papers on it. She got a job at some AI-run drug company, one of the ones whose name is all consonants. Letâs get back to the fire.
I had a fire extinguisher. In my kitchen, no less. It was just attached to a big chunk of Chrysler Imperial, because it used to be part of an NHRA-standard drag racer. Those guys are sticklers about fire protection, probably because you can only watch so many up-and-coming teenagers with immense racing talent reduce themselves to barbecue before you decide it might be time to ask them to carry a fire suppression system onboard. I hit it with my adjustable wrench, which is the only thing an adjustable wrench is good for, and it goes off, blanketing the room in some horrendously caustic fire-uncausing chemical. I also sometimes use it (the wrench) to grab hot pots off the stove when I canât find my oven mitts. Now is such a time, and I quickly throw the entire assembly out of the missing kitchen window into the snow, where it sizzles and is rendered inert.
After a few minutes to regain my composure and discover the furthest extents of manâs discoveries of new and exciting profanity, I step outside to retrieve the carburetor. Clean as a whistle. I smile, and walk back inside, ready to begin the arduous task of forming my own carburetor gaskets out of old roof shingles.

JJK man of choice x Curse!Reader
Choices that won't work for this piece: any non-human character (maybe choso?) and assholes (toji. just toji)
wc: 700
warnings: kinda sad ngl. but none other than that
a/n: i had an idea. and then i didnt know which character to write it for. so you pick. (kinda nanami/geto/other chill character coded im ngl) this is all over the place but i needed it out of my system. anyways have fun
The stars have fascinated you for as long as you can remember.
You find yourself staring at them tonight, sitting on the roof of the building youâve lived in for the past three years. Your knees are tucked to your chest, shingles digging into the soles of your bare feet.
But you just canât help it. You wanted to watch the stars. So you are.
Your thumbs rub over your knees, feeling the velvet skin underneath. It doesnât matter how long youâve been in this body, or that you canât even recall what it was like when you were a mindless curse, your skin never feels like your own. Youâre not human â you couldnât even pretend that, given that most people canât even see you. But you look like one, to those that can see you. Sometimes you feel like one.Â
So this body is yours, in the end.
Why, then, does it often feel so strange?
âYou nearly gave me a heart attack.â
You wouldnât have even been able to sense his presence if it hadnât been for the cursed energy radiating off of him. Itâs rare to see him like this, out of his normal gear.Â
âSorry,â you say, not sounding very apologetic. âNeeded air.â
âYouâre a curse. You donât need oxygen.â
âI feel like I do.â
He sighs, and sits next to you, leaning back on his hands. âWhy are you up?â
You shrug, gesturing up towards the sky. âThe sky is pretty. Itâd be a waste to not look at it.â
Heâs silent. Like he knows youâre lying.
âHave you ever had a fascination with the sky?â
âNo.â
You open and close your mouth once, then twiceâ and then frown. âMaybe thatâs not a human thing. You have such trivial fascinations, sometimes.â
âLike what?â
âMoney. Fame. Being better than everyone else.â
âAnd the sky isnât trivial?â
âThe sky stays,â you stand up, starting to walk up and down the center of the roof. âIt remains above you, always.â
Thereâs a long pause. Itâs not exactly uncomfortable. Youâve lived with this man long enough, had him close enough to understand his silence at times.
âIs it alright if I ask you something?â he inquires, tilting his head forward. A piece of hair falls over his forehead.
âFire away.â
âDo you ever wonder what it would be like to be human?â
Your breath catches in your throat, and you cough a little. âSometimes.â
âGo on.â
You sigh, sinking back down into your position next to him, laying back on the roof and staring up at the stars once more. âDecember 7th, 1989, I open my eyes for the very first time in this body. I would later discover that I was something else before then, some sort of a mindless curse, made out of the broken hearts of humans,â your eyelids flutter shut. âBut at that moment, I knew that I was⊠other. I understood what a human was, but had no understanding of what they think or why they do what they do. Iâve come to learn that humans have a much broader sense of life than I do. And I wish I had that. That thrill of a first love, the heart-pounding nervousness of a virgin about to have sex with the one they believe is their future, the satisfying smile a couple gives each other on their deathbeds knowing that they have done everything together, lived their lives through and through. All I know is the fear of love. The cry your heart gives when you hold out your hand and they step away, the shattering of hope when they reject you, when they die and leave you behind. Itâs built into me. And I wish I could see the other side.â
His hand reaches out, his finger brushing your cheek. âYouâre closer to humans than any other curse. Hell, thatâs why youâre here. I was assigned to take you under my wing, make sure you werenât a psychopath like most conscious curses. But you arenât. I once watched you sit outside and watch a bee for twenty minutes. And I think thatâs the most human thing â you admire the beauty of life, of humanity.â
And for the very first time, a tear slips down your cheek. He wipes it away.
âSee?â he holds up his damp thumb. âHuman.â
ââŠHuman,â you nod, chewing your lip.
His hand slips around to cradle the side of your face, tilting your head up to meet his, noses brushing. An unfamiliar heat creeps up your spine as you admire those perfect eyes of his.
âLet me show you the other side.â
And you let him.

Day 31: Hallđween/Costumes
(Set in the same continuity as and after Day 16.)
IT HAD ALMOST felt like tempting fate, putting in an offer when the old farmhouse a quarter of a mile from the Men of Letters Bunker came up for sale. Walking through it, taking stock of what was there and what would need fixing or updating, was just a bit like stepping into someplace both new and achingly familiar. From the way Dean had looked around, his eyes tracing over parts of the building like he recognized it or expected to see something he wasn't consciously looking for, he felt it too. It had felt like a dream when their offer was accepted, and the whole time leading up to the official closing and paperwork signing part of Sam kept waiting for the dream to become a nightmare.
It never did.
The first time Castiel visited them after the sale closed and they were officially home owners, he had looked around the house with a curious head tilt and a spark of recognition. He had let Sam ramble a bit about the areas that needed repair, still, and patiently listened Dean gush about the various upgrades he wanted to make to the bathrooms and replacing the windowbox fans and standing heaters with central heating and cooling, and then simply asked, "How can I help?"
Turned out there was quite a bit that an angel could help with when it came to home renovations. Installing the central heating and cooling system without needing to rip up walls or floors, for one thing, and replacing the old boiler in the basement with a newer model that had a larger water tank and a stronger pump. Repairs to the outside of the house needed to be done the long way to avoid drawing too much attention, but Castiel gamely volunteered his time and efforts sealing up cracks in the windowframes around the box fans and the doors, and patching the hole in the roof with new wood and shingles before snapping away the water damage and black mold that had started growing in the attic.
With a firm home base and official physical address that wasn't a secret bunker no one was supposed to know existed, Jody was able to start shipping them boxes and boxes of stuff that Bobby had kept in storage or that had been rescued from the smouldering wreck that had been left of his house and salvage yard. Things like weapons had to be hauled personally, which Jody and the girls had used as an excuse to come down and check out Sam and Dean's new digs, but other things like books and old keepsakes could be shipped. Much of the time that Dean and Castiel spent repairing the house, Sam spent unboxing things and figuring out which of their new and old belongings they should keep in the Bunker and which could be moved to the house when it was livable. He had actually dithered a bit over whether or not to move the herb garden before Castiel had asked him why he couldn't just have two, one for the Bunker and one for the house.
Frankly, considering the acreage that had come with the house, having a decent sized garden felt almost sensible to Sam. Dean rolled his eyes, but surprisingly agreed so long as Sam was willing to put up with him getting a couple of chickens and a rooster for eggs. Building a chicken coop and fox-proofing it was another adventure, and had eventually resulted in Castiel and Sam putting their heads together and creating a new set of warding stones they could lay down around the coop's boundaries. Further tweaking and they did the same for the house itself, and then for good measure they had added warding to the walls inside the perimeter under fresh paint and stapled thin plastic tubing filled with salt beneath the mouldings on the doors and windows.
The thing about the house was that there were technically four bedrooms and three full bathrooms, but two of those bathrooms were attached to bedrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs. The one upstairs had a walk-in closet attached to it, which made the walk-in closet inside the bedroom itself almost redundant. That closet got turned into a small meditation and spellcasting room for Sam after Dean claimed the "suite" on the main floor closest to the kitchen, especially when Castiel had noted the wooden shelving as "more suited to books and spell ingredients which are part of your personal collection rather than communal as the ones in the Bunker are meant to be". And it wasn't as if it would be needed to be a closet, since the closet in the bathroom was more than big enough to hold what clothes he and Sam had between them.
It hadn't been until Sam was online ordering two new California King mattresses, box springs, frames and linens that he had realized how much of a forgone conclusion it seemed to be that Castiel was moving in with Sam.
"Of course he's moving in with you," Dean scoffed. "I ain't sharing a bed with him! So unless he's decided he wants to lay claim to one of the other two rooms upstairs, just don't make me see or hear anything I shouldn't or wake me up with a thumping headboard!"
"The headboard wouldn't wake him up anyway," Castiel had assured Sam when he had reported what Dean had said. "No more than his headboard hitting the wall would disturb us. I added sound dampening wards around all the bedrooms when we lay down the protective wards before painting."
Well, that didn't precisely answer the question that Sam didn't quite know how to ask, but if Dean was making jokes about the headboards and Castiel was adding soundproofing to the bedrooms, it probably didn't matter too much right just then. The other two bedrooms got set up as guest rooms for Jody, Claire and Alex, or whichever of their friends and fellow hunters stopped by needing space to crash for the night, and that was that.
The house was ready to move into fully just in time for the weather to turn and the new heating system to get its first workout as Autumn kicked into high gear. Their neighbors in Lebanon still didn't quite know what to make of "the Campbell brothers" and "that Novak fella" who very clearly all lived together in the fixed up former Bethswaite farmhouse, but they were mostly friendly and welcoming. It seemed like Sam and Dean were finally getting the chance to actually put down proper roots for the first time since Sam was six months old.
Of course, putting down roots and having a permanent address meant other things as well.
"TRICK OR TREAT!"
"You'd think this place would be too far out to get kids tromping around looking for free candy," Dean grumbled as Castiel once again answered the doorbell, the porch light bouncing off the silver tinsel halo he wore on a wire headband to go with the black feathered costume wings strapped around his shoulders.
"You're just mad because you thought those giant bags of candy we bought were gonna be all for you," Sam rolled his eyes, reaching up to adjust the large curving black horns that were barely held on by the elastic string. "Dunno why since tomorrow it's all going to be half price."
"And picked over for the good stuff!" Dean complained. "Why'd you even get dressed up, anyway? Thought you hated Halloween."
"Thought you didn't want to hear about it," Sam deadpanned, eyebrows jogging up pointedly. He wasn't about to admit that Castiel and Claire both had made puppy eyes at him until he caved and dressed to match Castiel's angel costume, so letting his brother infer something else entirely was the order of the day. From the face Dean made, he bought it.
"Well, now that that image is in my brain, I need another drink," he groaned, leveraging himself up off the couch and heading for the kitchen. "And I'm going to bed. Don't forget the rules, bitch!"
"If you haven't heard anything yet, you ain't gonna, jerk!" Sam called back, smirking as Dean flipped him off.
The couch dipping beside him wiped the smirk from his face to be replaced by a blush, and he cautiously glanced sideways at Castiel. The angel's expression was placidly amused, eyes on the door through which Dean had just retreated.
"He still doesn't know about the two bags of candy you have kept in reserve to surprise him with tomorrow?' Castiel murmured, low enough that Dean was unlikely to overhear him.
"He never goes in my workroom, even if he's still coming into our room whenever he pleases," Sam murmured back, eliciting a small hum from Castiel.
"At least he has finally learned to knock when we have the door closed," he offered, to which Sam could only nod. "Sam?"
"Yeah, Cas?"
Whatever Castiel was going to ask was interrupted by the rapid thump of tiny feet followed by the doorbell ringing again. The angel sighed and moved to get up when Sam put a hand on his knee to stop him.
"My turn, angel," he said and, steeling his nerves, brushed a kiss to Castiel's cheek as he stood up and headed for the door. He hoped that the flow of kids to their door would stop soon so that he and Castiel could continue their conversation up in their room.
He had a feeling that it had been a long time coming.

Remind me that the very last house I need to buy is one at the top end of my budget (which money still doesn't exist before sometime next year) that needs extensive work (new roof, new wood shingle, new septic system), no matter how much it's a tiny 19th C cottage perched at the edge of the North Atlantic in a fishing village with a thriving creative folk art community just outside my favourite town, close enough I could bike there.
#rose seeks roots#uh if this is still for sale by the time I'm actually looking#don't think I won't still seriously consider it#like an idiot#I could preserve the crumbling root cellar!#why am I like this

An essential component of the roofing system is the shingle (a key component that enhances your homeâs aesthetic appeal and contributes to the durability and longevity of its roof). Consider the following anatomy of a residential sloped roof:
1. Roof Deck â A sloped roofâs foundation is its deck, typically made of plywood or oriented strand board (OSB). It provides a sturdy base for the installation of roofing materials and ensures structural stability.
2. Underlayment â Beneath the roofing shingles lies the underlayment, a water-resistant barrier shielding the roof deck from moisture and helps prevent leaks. Common underlayment types include asphalt-saturated felt and synthetic materials like synthetic underlayment or rubberized asphalt.
3. Roofing Shingles â Roofing shingles are the visible layer of a residential sloped roof, providing protection and enhancing the overall aesthetics. There are various shingle types available, like asphalt shingles, wood shingles, metal shingles, and clay or concrete tiles. Among these, asphalt shingles are the most commonly used due to their affordability, durability, and ease of installation (specially cut or formed shingles are produced for the ridge and hips).
Asphalt Shingle Manufacturing Process
While asphalt shingle manufacturing and technology have evolved over the years, their basic composition has remained the same. Consider the following asphalt shingle manufacturing process:
Raw Materials â Asphalt shingle production begins with high-quality material selection. Fiberglass or organic mats serve as a shingleâs core, while asphalt acts as a waterproofing agent. Mineral granules are then applied for surface protection and UV resistance, and additives are incorporated to enhance the shingleâs fire resistance and flexibility.
Mat Preparation â The selected mat material (fiberglass or organic), undergoes a manufacturing process to reinforce its strength and durability. Fiberglass mats are made by weaving glass fibers together, while organic mats are typically composed of recycled felt paper.
Coating and Drying â The prepared mat is then coated with asphalt (front and back), using a saturation process to ensure consistent coverage. The coated mat passes through a drying oven, which allows the asphalt to rapidly cure and stabilize.
Granule Application â Once dried, the coated mat proceeds to the granule application process. A layer of ceramic-coated mineral granules is evenly distributed on the top surface of the shingle, providing color, texture, and protection against weathering elements. The granules are embedded into the asphalt surface to enhance adhesion and durability.
Cutting and Shaping â After granule application, the asphalt-coated mat is cut into individual shingles. This process can be done manually or using automated machinery, depending on the production scale.
Packaging and Distribution â Finished roofing shingles are carefully inspected for quality and packed into bundles or cartons. They are then shipped to distributors, contractors, and suppliers for installation on residential roofs.
Note: Read more about roofing shingle production and options by visiting this roof shingle manufacturer.
Residential Sloped Roof Installation
Installing a residential shingle roofing system requires careful planning, proper preparation, and skilled execution. Here is a step-by-step overview of the typical installation process:
Preparation and Safety â Before beginning any work, safety must be prioritized. This includes wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) like:
Hard hat
Gloves
Goggles
Non-slip footwear
Harness
The area around the home should be cleared of any obstacles, and precautions should be taken to protect landscaping and outdoor features or furniture.
Removal of Existing Roofing Materials (Tear-off) â If there is an existing roof, the first step is to remove the old roofing materials. This may involve stripping off old shingles, underlayment, and flashing. Care should be taken to dispose of the old materials properly.
Inspection and Repair â Once the roof is cleared, a thorough inspection should be conducted to identify any damaged roof decking, sheathing, or structural issues. Any necessary repairs or replacements should be completed before installing a new roofing system.
Underlayment Installation â Install the underlayment, which acts as a moisture barrier and provides an additional protective layer. Asphalt-saturated felt or synthetic underlayment is commonly used. The underlayment should be rolled out horizontally, starting from the bottom edge of the roof and overlapping each subsequent row by a few inches (to ensure proper watershed).
Flashing Installation â Flashing is used to prevent water penetration at vulnerable areas like:
Valleys
Chimneys
Skylights
Roof intersections
Flashing is typically made of metal or a flexible waterproof material. Flashing should be installed before the shingles, ensuring proper coverage, sealing, and drainage.
Starter Shingle Placement â These shingles have a specialized adhesive strip and are installed along the roofâs eaves. These specialized shingles provide a secure foundation for the rest of the shingles and help prevent wind uplift.
Shingle Installation â The chosen shingles are installed from the bottom up, working in rows. Each shingle is nailed or stapled into place using appropriate roofing fasteners. It is crucial to follow the manufacturerâs guidelines regarding nail placement, spacing, and shingle overlap (for best product performance).
Ventilation and Ridge Cap Installation â Roof vents or ridge vents are installed to ensure proper attic ventilation preventing moisture buildup, allow air circulation, and help regulate temperature and humidity. The ridge cap, a specialized shingle designed for the roofâs peak, is then installed, overlapping the adjacent shingles and providing a solid, finished look.
Cleanup and Final Inspection â Once the roofâs shingles are installed, the work area should be thoroughly cleaned, removing all debris or loose material. A final inspection should be conducted to ensure the roof is properly installed, all shingles are secure, and there are no visible issues or gaps.
Note: The specific installation process may vary depending on factors like the shingle type, roof design, and local building codes. It is recommended to consult with a professional roofing contractor for a precise installation or replacement tailored to your specific roof and location requirements. A well-installed residential shingle roofing system provides long-lasting protection, durability, and aesthetic appeal to your home.
Residential Asphalt Shingle Roofing
In this article, you discovered the composition of a residential roofing system, asphalt shingle manufacturing, and how residential sloped roofs are installed.
Understanding how residential roofing systems are built, manufactured, and installed will help you choose the best materials for your homeâs roof.
Not knowing how to recognize quality roofing material or identify the steps in a roof replacement or installation will leave you vulnerable to unscrupulous and unprofessional roofers trying to take advantage of your need.

Seeing all your cool home updates && half-watching some HGTV w/my mom while drawing had a simple prompt idea if you might be interested! Basically HGTV reno show Jonsa - Sansa is a designer and finally gets a chance for her own show but loses Rob (her #1 contractor) to an injury before filming starts && Jon jumps in (either to help Rob /or/ the studio execs (maybe Targs?) throw him in) and the two have to work together somehow. Idk idk, just wanted to share! <3
ANON.
No, you have no idea, I already HAVE a house reno wip. It's not super long, but... yeah. I've got that.
Here, I'll post what I have written of it, since we CAN'T GET ONTO AO3.
this isn't exactly your prompt, though I do honestly love yours a lot and sort of want to change mine. If I changed mine, the show Sansa works on would definitely be like Rehab Addict, where she restores old homes to their prior state instead of making them "modern"
But mine is sort of similar? This snippet is just the set up and doesn't include the part where Sansa decides to start a youtube channel for her renovations, (a la WabiSabE, which I used to watch and was probably the inspiration for this fic when I first started writing it like a year ago lol), and everyone starts shipping her with her contractor Jon, who she keeps forcing to be in the videos because she can't really make them without him being in it...
.
Sansa winces as her car hits another bump and jolts her in her seat.
âYou owe me,â she huffs out, hands tight around the wheel.
âI know, I know,â Robb's voice comes through her sound system and fills the car. He's distracted, she can tell, and she bites back a snippy comment. Robb's just so busy, he couldn't possibly get away.
That's not fair, the small part of her brain that's still being rational thinks. Of course Robb couldn't drop everything and come out to the middle of nowhere to deal with their Great Uncle Brynden's estate. Robb's got a new baby and his job.
Robb's got a baby, Arya's got her tournaments, Bran has school, and Rickon's still underage. All of her siblings have lives they can't get away from. All except her.
No significant other, no kids. A tenuous career that she can technically do from anywhere.
âOh no,â she breathes, when the house finally comes into sight through the trees.
âWhat's wrong?â Robb asks, his full attention back on her.
âRobb,â she whines, the car coming to a pathetic, rolling stop on the overgrown gravel drive. âIt's a mess.â
âA mess?â
She doesn't answer, too busy staring at the mansion in front of her. Or, what used to be a mansion, she thinks.
It's still vaguely house-shaped, but... The roof is missing shingles in multiple places, the windows all seem busted out. The steps up to the covered front porch are fine, but the porch itself has a massive sinkhole, and half the wood looks rotted and ready to crumble.
Gods, if this is what the outside looks like...
âWhat kind of a mess?â Robb asks. She's just about to start listing the many problems when she hears another car approaching.
âI've gotta go,â she tells Robb. âI think the lawyer's here.â She hangs up before Robb can answer, and watches the other car slowly emerge through the trees up the bumpy road, past the broken gates, and onto the circular gravel drive. It stops behind her and a man gets out. She gets out, too, phone clutched in her hand, just in case.
âMiss Stark?â the man asks, and his face splits into a kind smile when she nods. âPerfect, perfect. I'm Samwell Tarly. It's nice to finally meet you.â
Sansa moves forward to shake the lawyer's hand. He isn't what she was expecting. He's young, for one â maybe only a few years older than her. And he seems just as nice in person as he'd been over the phone. She didn't think lawyers came in nice.
âWe should have met at your office,â she says, eyeing up the weeds sprouting from between the gravel and brushing against her ankles. âI didn't realize the road here would be so...â
Mr. Tarly laughs. âThis place has been abandoned for quite some time,â he agrees. âI never met Brynden myself, but Iâd heard about him. Apparently he decided to up and travel the world and left thisâŠâ
Sansa looks back at the crumbling mansion and feels her face scrunch up. She tries to smooth it out. âSo, how fast do you think I can sell this?â she asks.
Thatâs when Mr. Tarlyâs smile falters. âWell,â he starts, hesitant, âyou see, itâs in such a poor state, I canât imagine anyone would be willing to buy it.â
âBut the land must be worth something? They can just knock it down and-â
âAh,â Mr. Tarly winces, and Sansaâs sentence breaks off, unfinished. âI suppose you didnât read all the fine print?â At the slow shake of her head, he grimaces. âRiverrun Manor is a historic property. You, legally, are not allowed to tear the structure down. Anything you do needs to go through lots of committee approvalsâŠâ
âSo what youâre saying,â Sansa says, closing her eyes as reality crashes down around her, âis that literally no one is going to want to buy this.â
âMaybe if you find someone whoâs both very rich, and very interested in Riverlands history?â
She opens her eyes and there must be a glare on her face, because Mr. Tarly winces again.
Then she turns back to the manor, and really looks at it this time. Beneath the grime and the moss and the crumbling wood, she can see what it used to be.
âWhat if I fixed it up a bit?â she asks, turning back to the lawyer. âWhat if I just did the major repairs, do you think someone would buy it then?â
She doesnât want to do that, but it beats letting the property sit around even longer and paying the taxes on it. Or, worse, not paying the taxes and having that on her and her siblingâs financial records.
âIâm not a real estate agent,â Mr. Tarly responds, looking at the building thoughtfully. âBut this is a good location, lots of historic stuff around. I wouldnât doubt you could sell it if the building werenât⊠well, that.â He waves his hand towards the manor.
âAlright,â she nods. âMaybe we should head to your office to do the paperwork, though? Then Iâll⊠I guess Iâll look for a contractor?â
Sam nods, and a bright smile lights his face again. âOh, I know someone you can call!â

the term "curse words" is honestly kind of hilarious to me because can you honestly imagine a magic system that worked like that? I can't think of an example that's not hilarious
You shout fuck when you bang your toe on the table, causing in a 1-mile radius to engage into a sloppy prĂŠternatural orgy
You call someone a cunt and their face transfigures itself to sprout labia and a clit
Saying damn you is enough to plop someone in a shitty hotel to be hit on by spider femboys for all eternity
I tell you to piss off and you fly off into the sunset like a deflating balloon propelled by the force of your own spraying urethra
Why is everyone's roof covered in excrement? Because some asshole down the block said "shit on a shingle"

The modern air conditioner was invented only in the 1920âs and it didnât become a common home feature until the latter half of the 20th century. But, while some of us might wonder how our grandparents survived hot and steamy summers, the fact is those older homes had a few tricks up their sleeves. They were designed and built with features to help them stay cool without AC.
Airflow: In northern states, it was common to create a âstack effectâ by opening windows in the basement and top floor. This generated a cool breeze through the house. Further south, before AC many homes were built on blocks, allowing breezes to flow underneath and help keep them cool all summer long.
Tall ceilings: Ceilings as high as 10, 12 and even 14 feet were common in older homes. As heat rose to the ceiling, lower areas stayed cool and comfortable. Ceiling fansâpowered by electricity or elaborate rope systemsâalso facilitated air movement.
Transoms: A transomâa small window over a doorâallowed warmer air at the ceiling to circulate up to higher floors, providing more air movement throughout the house. Transoms over exterior doors often had hinges and special hardware. This allowed easy access to open and close, helping create airflow while still providing security.
Large windows: Many older and historic homes had large, double-hung windows. Opening the top sash would allow hot air near the ceiling to escape. Opening the bottom sash, especially at night, allowed cool air to flow inside. Rooms had many windows, some as large as doors. Thick, long draperies were often used in these large windows to keep out the heat. People would âdraw the drapesâ to help keep a room cool without sacrificing light.
Porches: Wraparound porches offered shade from the direct sun while still allowing light to pour through windows. Screened and furnished sleeping porches were also very common. People would sleep outside to catch the cool breeze of the summer night without all the bugs. Many believed that fresh air had health benefits.
Reflective roofs: Many older homes had light-colored or silver-metal roofs made of lead, tin or copper. This was a great way to reflect heat away from the home to reduce interior temperatures. Itâs quite a contrast to todayâs dark asphalt shingles that can absorb a lot of the sunâs rays.
Thick walls: If you could afford them, thick brick masonry or stone walls were a great insulator and kept homes cool before AC. Walls 12 to 24 inches thick were common in the Deep South, blocking the heat from the inside as the day wore on, and providing some warmth as the evening chill set in.
