What are some cool places to visit in Assam?? It's my dream to visit Assam for once in my lifetime
See, it depends on when you're visiting and who you're asking. I personally wouldn't suggest visiting during summer because even Assamese people run to Shillong because of the heat and humidity. You can visit during autumn or winter and even spring. I really like the time between January and April, the air just feels lighter... The coming of spring, the leaving of winter, the rains (I don't like rains but still), the new life in the flora is just... Mwah!
About the places, the classic Kaziranga National Park but that's too far from Guwahati so you'll have to stay in Kaziranga for a few days. Fun fact, I've never been there. Also, it's not a very major tourist attraction because it's a very typical place but you need to spend an evening sitting by the river bank in Dharapur and enjoy the sunset while the wind blows your hair away from your face and you just contemplate life. Also, if you're spiritual or religious the Kamakhya temple is a must. You just feel a sort of energy there, you know? I'm not from Tezpur and I've never been there but it has some really scenic places as well. If you wanna know about the history of Assam, Rang Ghar and Talatal Ghar in Sibsagar is a must. They're not the only places but they're some of the most famous ones. You can also visit the Bhupen Hazarika Samadhikshetra in Jalukbari simply because Bhupen Da is beloved by everyone and their mothers and he deserves it all.
So yeah, I think that's enough for now. Just remember that these places are random and cannot be included in a single itinerary unless you're planning on visiting for a long time. I'm not the best person to ask about this because my own state is one of the places I've explored the least in, so do ask the internet just in case. I just mentioned whatever I could recollect at the moment. Thanks for being curious!

Wondering what are some places you can not miss in Meghalaya?
Here's a list of some places you must visit when you're in Meghalaya. The places are a salute to Mother Nature.

Shillong
Shillong, known as the "Scotland of the East," is home to rolling hills, serene lakes, and many waterfalls. The city is known for its lively music scene, with local bands often performing in cafes and pubs. Explore the bustling markets of Police Bazaar, take in panoramic views from Shillong Peak, and delve into regional culture at the Don Bosco Museum. With its cool climate and picturesque landscapes, Shillong is a refreshing retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Cherrapunjee - Rain Lover’s Paradise
If you love rain, Cherrapunjee, or Sohra as the locals call it, is where you want to be. This place holds the record for one of the highest rainfall areas in the world. But it's not just about the rain; the real treasures here are the living root bridges. The Double Decker Root Bridge is a must-visit, and while you're at it, explore the breathtaking Nohkalikai Falls, which will make you want to dance in the rain.
Mawsynram - Rain Enthusiast's Utopia
Step aside Cherrapunjee, Mawsynram is here. Crowned as the wettest place on Earth, it’s where rain takes a front seat in the drama of nature. You might want to carry an umbrella, but don't let that stop you from exploring the spellbinding caves of Mawjymbuin. Marvel at the Shivalinga-shaped stalagmite inside the cave, which looks like it’s straight out of an adventure movie.
Kongthong - The Whistling Village
Imagine a village where everyone has their own unique whistle. Kongthong, the "Whistling Village," is where villagers communicate using tunes instead of names. Yes, you read that right! As you wander through this harmonious hamlet, you'll feel like you’ve stepped into a real-life musical. The serene landscapes only add to the melody of this unique tradition.
Dawki - Crystal Clear Waters
Dawki’s Umngot River is so clear, boats look like they’re floating in mid-air. Head to this picturesque town for a boat ride on the river, where you can see the riverbed as if you were looking through glass. If you’re an adventure junkie, the annual boat race held here is a spectacle you won’t want to miss. And don’t forget to wave to Bangladesh on the other side of the border!
Umiam Lake - Shillong’s Backyard
Umiam Lake, also known as Barapani, is Shillong’s very own weekend getaway. This man-made reservoir is perfect for a picnic or some watersports. Whether you’re into kayaking, water cycling, or just lounging by the shore, Umiam Lake offers a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. The sunsets here are Instagram-worthy, so make sure your phone is fully charged!
Mawlynnong - Clean and Green
Mawlynnong isn't just another pretty face; it’s been awarded the title of Asia’s cleanest village. As you stroll through its spotless lanes, you’ll notice bamboo dustbins at every corner and well-maintained gardens. Visit the Sky Walk, a bamboo structure that offers a panoramic view of Bangladesh. Mawlynnong’s living root bridge is another marvel that’s just a short trek away.
Balpakram National Park - The Land of Spirits
Balpakram National Park is Meghalaya’s version of the Grand Canyon, filled with gorges, cliffs, and lush greenery. It's home to exotic wildlife like the red panda and the Asian golden cat. Locals believe this park is haunted by spirits, giving it an eerie charm. Trek through its mysterious landscapes and keep an eye out for the rare pitcher plant, which looks like something out of a sci-fi flick.
Williamnagar
If you’re looking to go off the beaten path, Williamnagar is your destination. This town, named after Captain Williamson Sangma, offers a raw and unfiltered experience of Meghalaya. Explore the Simsang River, perfect for a lazy day of fishing or just enjoying the tranquil surroundings. Williamnagar’s rural vibe and friendly locals will make you feel right at home.
Nongpoh
Nongpoh is like the welcome mat to Meghalaya, often the first stop for travelers coming from Guwahati. This town is known for its fresh pineapples and scenic landscapes. Visit the Orchid Lake Resort for a relaxing stay by the lake and don’t miss the bustling local market where you can sample traditional Khasi dishes. Nongpoh is a great place to start your Meghalaya adventure with a bang.
Jowai
Jowai, the lesser-known cousin of Shillong, is where you’ll find true tranquility. Nestled in the Jaintia Hills, this town is famous for its scenic beauty and vibrant culture. Visit the Thadlaskein Lake, a man-made wonder with a folklore twist, and the Nartiang Monoliths, which are the tallest collection of monoliths in the world.
The Living Root Bridges: Nature’s Architectural Wonders
Meghalaya is home to living root bridges that defy traditional engineering. Crafted by the Khasi and Jaintia tribes, these bridges are made from the aerial roots of rubber fig trees. Over time, these roots are meticulously guided and woven into sturdy, natural bridges that can bear the weight of people.
A prime example is the double-decker living root bridge in Nongriat, a marvel of natural engineering. It resembles a treehouse bridge, spanning a stream with two levels of interconnected roots. Walking on these bridges feels like stepping into an enchanted forest where trees share ancient secrets.
The Mawsmai Cave: A Geological Marvel
While caves often evoke darkness, the Mawsmai Cave near Cherrapunji is a different experience. This limestone cave is a geological wonderland, adorned with stalactites and stalagmites that appear sculpted by a master artist. Illuminated pathways allow visitors to appreciate every intricate detail of this underground marvel.
Exploring the Mawsmai Cave is an adventure in itself, with narrow passages that might make you feel like a human spaghetti noodle. But the thrill is unmatched when you emerge, feeling like you've completed an epic subterranean quest.
The Laitlum Canyons: A Dramatic Landscape
Contrasting with Meghalaya's greenery, the Laitlum Canyons offer rugged cliffs and expansive vistas. The name "Laitlum" means "end of the hills," and standing at the canyon's edge feels like standing at the world's edge.
The panoramic views from Laitlum Canyons are awe-inspiring, with rolling hills, deep gorges, and winding rivers below. It’s an ideal spot for a picnic, a photography session, or quiet contemplation. The trek down to the canyon floor is challenging, but the view is a rewarding spectacle.
Nohkalikai Falls: A Waterfall with a Story
Nohkalikai Falls isn’t just a waterfall; it's a cascade with a tragic legend. Plummeting from a height of 1,115 feet, it's India's tallest plunge waterfall. The sight of water cascading down the cliffs into the pool below is breathtaking, but the story behind its name adds a poignant touch.
Legend has it that a woman named Likai jumped off the cliff after a family tragedy, giving the falls its name, "Leap of Likai." Despite the melancholic tale, the waterfall stands as a reminder of nature's enduring beauty and the stories it holds.
Mawlynnong: Asia's Cleanest Village
Mawlynnong, often hailed as Asia's cleanest village, is a testament to the beauty of cleanliness. Bamboo dustbins line the streets, and every corner is immaculate, creating a green paradise.
The villagers take pride in their environment, with flowering plants adorning pathways and fresh air that revitalizes. Mawlynnong isn’t just clean; it's a model of sustainable living, where humanity and nature harmonize seamlessly.
The Sacred Forest of Mawphlang: A Sanctuary of Nature
Meghalaya's sacred groves, like the Mawphlang Sacred Forest, are akin to natural temples protected by the Khasi tribes. These ancient forests are believed to be inhabited by deities and spirits, preserving their sanctity.
Walking through Mawphlang is like stepping into a different world. Towering trees with twisted roots and dense canopies create a mystical ambiance. It’s a place where time feels suspended, and every sound of leaves is a whisper from the past.
From the music-filled streets of Shillong to the rain-soaked beauty of Mawsynram, every corner of this state tells a unique story. Whether you're whistling your way through Kongthong or boating on the crystal-clear waters of Dawki, Meghalaya promises a journey that’s as quirky and vibrant as its culture.
