What are some cool places to visit in Assam?? It's my dream to visit Assam for once in my lifetime
See, it depends on when you're visiting and who you're asking. I personally wouldn't suggest visiting during summer because even Assamese people run to Shillong because of the heat and humidity. You can visit during autumn or winter and even spring. I really like the time between January and April, the air just feels lighter... The coming of spring, the leaving of winter, the rains (I don't like rains but still), the new life in the flora is just... Mwah!
About the places, the classic Kaziranga National Park but that's too far from Guwahati so you'll have to stay in Kaziranga for a few days. Fun fact, I've never been there. Also, it's not a very major tourist attraction because it's a very typical place but you need to spend an evening sitting by the river bank in Dharapur and enjoy the sunset while the wind blows your hair away from your face and you just contemplate life. Also, if you're spiritual or religious the Kamakhya temple is a must. You just feel a sort of energy there, you know? I'm not from Tezpur and I've never been there but it has some really scenic places as well. If you wanna know about the history of Assam, Rang Ghar and Talatal Ghar in Sibsagar is a must. They're not the only places but they're some of the most famous ones. You can also visit the Bhupen Hazarika Samadhikshetra in Jalukbari simply because Bhupen Da is beloved by everyone and their mothers and he deserves it all.
So yeah, I think that's enough for now. Just remember that these places are random and cannot be included in a single itinerary unless you're planning on visiting for a long time. I'm not the best person to ask about this because my own state is one of the places I've explored the least in, so do ask the internet just in case. I just mentioned whatever I could recollect at the moment. Thanks for being curious!

A comprehensive Assam Meghalaya tour package offers travelers an opportunity to explore the best of these states, blending adventure, nature, and cultural exploration. From the mighty Brahmaputra River to the world’s wettest place, Cherrapunjee, every corner of these states promises a unique experience. In this blog, we will explore what a typical Assam Meghalaya tour package entails and what makes these destinations so irresistible.
Day 1: Arrival in Guwahati, Assam
Your journey typically begins in Guwahati, the gateway to Assam and the largest city in the state. Located on the banks of the Brahmaputra River, Guwahati blends modernity with the charm of ancient temples and traditional markets.
Key Highlights:
Kamakhya Temple: A sacred Hindu pilgrimage site, Kamakhya Temple sits atop the Nilachal Hill and is dedicated to the goddess Kamakhya. The temple is known for its unique rituals and vibrant festival of Ambubachi Mela.
Umananda Temple: Situated on Peacock Island in the middle of the Brahmaputra River, Umananda Temple offers a peaceful retreat with panoramic views of the river and the city.
Brahmaputra River Cruise: A sunset or dinner cruise on the Brahmaputra is a must-do activity. You can enjoy traditional Assamese performances onboard while watching the sun dip below the horizon.
After a day of exploration, your Assam Meghalaya tour package ensures a comfortable stay at a hotel in Guwahati before heading deeper into the beauty of the region.
Day 2: Guwahati to Kaziranga National Park
On Day 2, your journey will take you to the famous Kaziranga National Park, approximately 200 kilometers from Guwahati. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kaziranga is home to two-thirds of the world’s population of the one-horned rhinoceros.
Key Highlights:
Jeep Safari and Elephant Safari: The best way to explore Kaziranga is through a jeep or elephant safari. The park is divided into four zones: Central, Eastern, Western, and Burapahar. Along with the one-horned rhino, the park is also home to elephants, wild water buffaloes, swamp deer, and over 400 species of birds.
Wildlife Photography: If you are a wildlife enthusiast or photographer, Kaziranga is a paradise for capturing animals in their natural habitat, especially the endangered species.
Cultural Experience: Don’t miss the cultural shows at the Kaziranga Orchid and Biodiversity Park, where you can witness traditional Assamese dances and music performances.
After a day of safaris and cultural immersion, enjoy a quiet night under the starry skies of Kaziranga.
Day 3: Kaziranga to Shillong, Meghalaya
Your Assam Meghalaya tour package now moves on to the state of Meghalaya. A scenic drive will take you to Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya and often referred to as the "Scotland of the East." The journey itself is filled with picturesque landscapes, hills, and waterfalls.
Key Highlights:
Umiam Lake: On the way to Shillong, Umiam Lake, also known as Barapani, offers a breathtaking view. Surrounded by rolling hills, this man-made lake is perfect for photography, water sports, or simply relaxing by the shore.
Shillong Peak: The highest point in Shillong, offering a panoramic view of the entire city, its surrounding valleys, and hills. It's an ideal place for those who want to experience the beauty of Meghalaya's landscapes.
Ward's Lake: Located in the heart of Shillong, Ward's Lake is a picturesque garden lake where you can enjoy a leisurely walk, feed the fish, or go boating.
Police Bazaar: End your day by exploring Police Bazaar, Shillong’s bustling marketplace. You’ll find everything from traditional handicrafts, handwoven shawls, and souvenirs to trendy clothes and local snacks.
Overnight stay at a comfortable hotel in Shillong, ready to explore more of Meghalaya’s hidden gems.
Day 4: Shillong to Cherrapunjee – The Wettest Place on Earth
Day 4 is dedicated to exploring the legendary town of Cherrapunjee (locally known as Sohra), known for receiving the highest rainfall in the world. The scenic drive to Cherrapunjee offers breathtaking views of cloud-covered valleys and waterfalls.
Key Highlights:
Nohkalikai Falls: One of India’s tallest waterfalls, Nohkalikai Falls cascades down from a height of about 340 meters. The sight of the falls during the monsoon, with the water gushing down into a turquoise pool, is simply mesmerizing.
Mawsmai Cave: Explore the intricate limestone formations inside Mawsmai Cave. These caves are short but offer an exciting adventure with narrow passages and natural carvings.
Seven Sisters Waterfall: Also known as Nohsngithiang Falls, this magnificent waterfall gets its name from the seven segments that flow side by side. It's one of the most iconic sights in Meghalaya, especially after heavy rains.
Thangkharang Park: Offering panoramic views of the Bangladesh plains, this park is a peaceful retreat with well-maintained gardens and a variety of flora and fauna.
After a day of waterfall chasing and cave exploration, head back to your hotel in Cherrapunjee for a cozy night in the mist-covered hills.
Day 5: Cherrapunjee to Mawlynnong and Dawki
The next stop in your Assam Meghalaya tour package takes you to two iconic destinations: Mawlynnong, the cleanest village in Asia, and Dawki, famous for its crystal-clear Umngot River.
Key Highlights:
Mawlynnong Village: Often referred to as "God’s Own Garden," Mawlynnong is known for its cleanliness, community-driven waste management, and eco-tourism. Walk through the village’s neat lanes and bamboo houses, and interact with the locals to understand their sustainable lifestyle.
Living Root Bridges: Just a short trek from Mawlynnong lies one of Meghalaya’s most unique attractions, the living root bridges. These bridges are naturally made from the roots of rubber trees and have been used by locals for centuries. The experience of walking over these living bridges is truly one-of-a-kind.
Dawki River: The crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River at Dawki are so transparent that boats seem to be floating on air. You can take a boat ride to witness the river's beauty up close, and the nearby Dawki Suspension Bridge adds to the scenic charm.
As you return to Shillong, you will carry with you the memories of these unforgettable landscapes.
Day 6: Shillong to Jowai – Hidden Gems of Meghalaya
On Day 6, your journey takes you to Jowai, the district headquarters of the West Jaintia Hills. Lesser-known but equally stunning, Jowai offers a peaceful escape into nature.
Key Highlights:
Krang Suri Waterfalls: One of the most beautiful waterfalls in Meghalaya, Krang Suri is surrounded by lush greenery and features crystal-clear blue water. You can swim at the base of the falls or simply sit by the shore and soak in the beauty of the place.
Nartiang Monoliths: Nartiang is home to a collection of monoliths, believed to be the tallest in the world. These ancient stone structures tell the story of the region’s rich history and are a must-visit for history buffs.
Laitlum Canyons: The majestic Laitlum Canyons offer breathtaking views of the surrounding hills, deep valleys, and winding rivers. It's an ideal spot for those seeking tranquility and an intimate connection with nature.
