VOICEVOX, a free, open-source text-to-speech synthesis engine, is developping a "humming" function, which will allow its speaking voicebanks to sing.

The prototype should be available around the end of January 2024.

According to Virvox Project, who developed Takehiro, Kotarou and Ryusei among others, more voices should be supported by the "humming" function in the future, and those three should be in the running soon since they're next up in the initial speaking release order.

The below demo (click through to listen) showcases Shikoku Metan, Zundamon, Kasukabe Tsumugi, Namine Ritsu and Amehare Hau's VOICEVOX voicebanks singing.

This does not mean that singing synthesis is being developed for these voicebanks (in a few cases, they already have their own singing synth on a separate program) and is in fact just using their spoken recordings to make them sing.

Hi! A few months ago I discovered this video from September 28, 2023 for The Invisible Man and His Soon-To-Be Wife by Iwatobineko that includes a few of the scenes from the manga voice acted!

The video doesn't have an easy English translation available, so I decided to provide below. Please note, I used my manga copies as a reference, so apologies if there are any mistakes.

For a limited time you can view Zunda Horizon, the first anime to star a Vocaloid, for free! The show features Vocaloid Tohoku Zunko, her sisters VOICEROID Tohoku Kiritan and UTAU Tohoku Itako, and many others! 

Synopses: 

Zunko Tohoku can make any mochi into delicious zunda mochi by shooting it with her Zunda Arrow. Along with Kiritan Tohoku, Itako Tohoku, Usagi Chūgoku, Metan Shikoku, and Sora Kyushu, she enjoys eating zunda mochi while being full of happiness. 

Chanko Ōedo conversely leads the Natto Factory along with her companions Tsurugi Chubu, Shinobi Kansai, Awamo Okinawa, and Meron Hokkaido. Even though zunda and natto use the same type of bean, the edamame used in zunda and the soy beans used in natto are harvested at different times, with edamame being harvested first. As a result, the members of the Natto Factory are afraid of a decrease in the quantity of soybeans harvested. Chanko sends Awamo Okinawa and Meron Hokkaido to Zunko's house to assassinate her, but a third power makes their appearance.

Sin embargo, el zunda y el natto utilizan el mismo tipo de frijol, el edamame utilizado en el zunda y las semillas de soja utilizadas en el natto se cosechan en diferentes momentos, y el edamame es cosechado primero. Como resultado, los miembros de la fábrica de Natto tienen miedo de una disminución en la cantidad de semillas de soja cosechadas. En un mundo futurista, los "Nanorace” (Nano Raza), personas cuyos genes contienen nanomáquinas que les otorgan habilidades especiales, son controlados y sufren el perjuicio de los "Purerace" (Raza Pura), los seres humanos normales. Beck, un cazador legendario con el poder de "Red Ash", tiene como objetivo continuar con el procedimiento quirúrgico para convertirse en Purerace. Junto al gran mecánico pero tímido Tyger, utilizan su máquina paralela para viajar al viejo mundo, haciendo trabajos peligrosos. En una tierra en forma de cono llamada Kikyougahara en la provincia de Shin, vive una chica llamada Hana. Ella es una chica dulce, que siempre piensa en su familia, en particular, su bisabuela Chiyo, a quien cariñosamente llama "Granny". Un día, un grupo de entretenimiento ambulante llamado Natsugawa Genzaemon pasa por el lugar, y los aldeanos les dan la bienvenida con gusto. En el otro extremo de los mares del Sur, donde nadie se había atrevido a ir, existe una isla llamada Charanpo Land. En el centro de la isla hay un árbol baobab gigante, que produce muchos huevos cada día. Dentro de los huevos hay alimentos, ropa y otras necesidades diarias. Los habitantes de la isla viven una vida sin preocupaciones, dependiendo de los huevos. Pero últimamente, los huevos han empezado a aparecer vacíos cada vez más, lo que hace que los habitantes se incomoden. Entonces, un día, con un estruendo, y una explosión de luces de arco iris, el baobab produjo un huevo de curioso aspecto. A la mañana siguiente, el jefe del pueblo Poncho dice a los habitantes que tienen que encontrar ese huevo. Ahora el tigre Kometora y un grupo de niños deben encontrar el huevo dentro del bosque.

El corto "Red Ash -Magicicada-" de Studio 4°C es el único corto en 3D CG en la selección. La compañía de juegos Comcept lanzó una exitosa campaña de recaudación de fondos Kickstarter para el proyecto con el lanzamiento de su juego Red Ash: The Indelible Legend el año pasado.

"Zunda Horizon" se basa en un personaje original creado por SSS-Studio llamado Zunko Tohoku, para apoyar a las víctimas en la región de Tohoku, durante el terremoto y tsunami de Tohoku. Ninico Edomura creó el personaje, pero ella lo libero de derechos de autor, por lo que cualquier persona puede utilizar el personaje de forma gratuita sin necesidad de un permiso de SSS para hacerlo. Zunko Tohoku fue parte de una exitosa campaña de crowdfunding en 2013 para crear un software de Vocaloid para el personaje. SSS lanzó una exitosa campaña de crowdfunding para el personaje del año pasado para crear un Manga y un libro de ilustraciones.

Aparte de Studio 4°C, todos los estudios participantes son nuevos en el proyecto Anime Tamago. El corto entre WAO Corporation, Studio Live, y SSS-Studio es también la primera vez que un proyecto ha sido aceptado como una producción colaborativa. El corto de colaboración se centrará en el personaje mascota de Tohoku Zunko.

Honestly I know so many people who like. Know about Vocaloid, maybe other synths too, enjoy it, but feel distanced from it because they can't really put their hands in it. That was me for many years.

If you like some vocal synth voices, if you think it'd be fun for a vocal synth voice to say this and sing that, remember that there are many ways to use vocal synths for free.

You could make your own covers, or you could just. Make them say the one funny sentence and go "hehee"

UTAU is a free program that allows for anyone to create their own vocal synth, and for anyone to use these vocal synths, (or UTAUs) granted they have the download link. There are a few famous UTAUs like Kasane Teto or Namine Ritsu, but you could also fall in love with a lesser known UTAU created by some rando! In case you don't enjoy using UTAU, the program, there are front-ends for it such as OpenUtau that are easier to use with some more functions. There are UTAUs in many different languages.

Synthesizer V Basic is the free version of Synthesizer V. It's completely useable on its own, with some limitations such as having only three tracks at a time (which is completely manageable) and not being able to use paid voicebanks to their full potential (which won't impact you if you only use the free voicebanks). As of right now, being that I'm missing just a few Standard Lites, I have 22 Lite (aka free) voicebanks, + 3 Free Limited Trial voicebanks on SynthV. This includes some voicebanks you may be familiar with, such as Kasane Teto SV, Eleanor Forte, Eleanor Forte AI, SOLARIA, Haruno Sora...

Synthesizer V Editor (also known as R1) is an old version of Synthesizer V with a free trial that you can use forever. It has a few free voicebanks, iirc being Yamine Renri, GENBU and Eleanor Forte. If you like GENBU, you might be interested in testing his R1 voicebank, since his Lite on SynthV Basic has some imperfections. (sob)

DeepVocal is another free program similar to UTAU. It has its own voicebanks and its own appearance. It's not currently being developed but you can continue to download and use all its free voicebanks!

NEUTRINO is a lesser known AI program which is, at the moment, completely free. It's a little tricky to use, and is not compatible with... well, my PC for example, but if you listen to it and like its voices, it's worth looking into - it may work for you!

VoiSona is another current program that can be downloaded for free with a free voicebank, being Chis-A! If you like Chis-A... she's free!

I'm less familiar with ACE Studio because I don't. personally like it. but it comes with a free trial - another option to look into!

I think you can also get you a free trial for VOCALOID6 with its native voicebanks. If you're into text-to-speech programs, VOICEVOX is an option if you know Japanese! (It supports some recognisable voicebank such as GENBU-as-just-a-guy, Namine Ritsu, Shikoku Metan who is also on UTAU and NEUTRINO... etc.)

Thanks to her new SynthV voicebank, there's even talk of Gumi Megpoid having a Lite (aka free) voicebank in the future. If you want to get into vocal synth, if you just want to test it out, you can do it right now for free. I'm sure I forgot some examples. People often talk about their paid voicebanks collections, about buying the newest release, but you can do so much for free. Like just get Chis-A. What's stopping you? Some SynthV Lite voicebanks are really high quality, like Kyomachi Seika AI, to me, is barely distinguishable from her full version. Sorry to keep rambling, but I think the "wow! you can make a neocities website for free??!" site needs to know you can also make a vocal synth cover for free. You can make your own songs featuring a vocal synth for free (not commercially) too.
