So... I've been watching shiki recently, and I thought it would be a cool spin on the "vampire" prompt to draw shiki Poland! It's not the most well known vamprire media, but I like how characterised they are. The red rings in their eyes, the huge pupils... and the fangs behind the human teeth!! Cool

I also put the storm prompt in becaue it gave it a realloy dramatic vibe hehe

literally no one was doing it like natsuno yuuki. he was genre savvy but he was also fucking gay so he still died. after his death he started dressing like the google search results for gay vampire. his only friends were his homoerotic bestie, an adult medical professional speed running his descent into madness, and two random kids he dug up his stalker’s grave with. he became a vampire and was immediately better at it than all of the other vampires but he thought they were bitches so he didn’t even tell them he turned. his last words was that he was never going to make it out of that town alive but if anyone could have it was him and that’s what makes him so tragic. he died trying to save someone who was never ever going to save him back. he wasn’t afraid to die because he was already dead. he burned the entire town to the ground mourning his own death and he didn’t do it to save a single goddamn person, he did it because they murdered him and he was going to fucking hurt them back for it. I’m obsessed with him

Thinking about Shiki again, and how Sunako is meant to deconstruct the idea of eternal youth because "youth" includes "being stuck as a child" and not just "sprightly and 24 years old forever." And how despite appearing as a child and, in several respects, retaining the personal qualities of one, she's still given an incredible amount of depth and complexity and a rich internal world (like actual children), wrapped up in these layers of self-conflict and a genuinely sympathetic desire to be loved and understood while still clearly being The Antagonist™ of the story and an architect of a truly terrifying situation for the villagers involved. All while having an incredibly interesting relationship with Seishin that is central to the plot and themes of the show.

ALSO thinking about how they easily could have left Chizuru as a one-dimensional femme-fatale, but they spent an entire episode showing us that she, like every character in this, is still a person underneath everything she feels compelled to do. They didn't have to give her any complexity, but they did! And then when we see the villagers' reactions to her, we're left wondering if it's really worth it to meet monstrosity with monstrosity, and if there are some things that, regardless of what kind of person you are, no one deserves. If perhaps there is a limit to what we are allowed to do to protect ourselves and preserve our humanity, and if humanity is something it's even possible to lose in the first place. We have to sit with these questions, and the show provides no concrete answers.

Everyone loses when you fully dehumanize the enemy (which is something both sides of this conflict do, albeit in different ways), and anyone is capable of carrying out that dehumanization.

Every once in a while I think about Shiki. I was lowkey obsessed with it as a teen.

First of all there were so many CUNTY characters. Megumi, Sunako, Chizuru. I was obsessed with their style (especially Megumi's, though Sunako is who I like the most as a character). And some of the male ones ate too like Tatsumi and Seishirou. Even Muroi in a way.

The artstyle is fucking insane with all the bizarre hairstyles, the shikis' eyes, most of the characters have very distinctive features.

And the Natsuno x Tohru ship. Upon rewatch it is not subtle AT ALL. They kinda just straight up show us Natsuno falling in love with him at the beginning of one of the episodes. Plus he gets jealous when Tohru talks about the nurse, and then Megumi asks him "Why do you like him more than me?"!!!

Unfortunately I just hate how it fucking ends. You can't give me a show about vampires and expect me to not root for the vampires, sorry. I think it would've been cool if at least most of the humans died in the fire or something. I don't know, the shikis just being exterminated and that's it (ik it's implied Sunako survived, but still) just felt a bit anti-climatic and didn't leave a good taste in my mouth. I also hate how they made Megumi's death more brutal and humiliating than in the manga and novel for some reason.

I also fucking hate Toshio in general lol.
