The Guerrero drama is sad all around.
It's one of those things you don't even want to really talk about because it's so fucked up. I'll never understand that mindset of how one puts themselves before their kid. Especially in a situation like that. Even if they want to say the relationship between them hasn't been good there's just certain things you shouldn't allow to stand no matter what the circumstances are just from a human being standpoint. If a person can't even do that much there's something wrong. Something much deeper.

TW: S Abuse.
Sherilyn Guerrero - daughter of the late great Eddie Guerrero - has come forward with allegations against her step-father, claiming her step-father sexual abused her.
Sherilyn Guerrero describes how this happened whilst living with the family during COVID, before she finally was able to get her own apartment. She explains how her mother - Vickie Guerrero - had made multiple excuses for the step-father, and did not protect Sherilyn at all. According to Sherliyn, her mother has sided with the step-father and accused Sherilyn of not being respectful or grateful towards her step-father, leading to Vickie Guerrero no longer communicating with Sherliyn. Sherilyn's sister has also blocked her, stating she doesn't "want to get in the middle" of the situation.
If this is true, then I hope that the full weight of justice is brought down upon the step-father, and Vickie Guerrero. I respect that all are innocent until proven guilty in the eyes of the law and that is essential. Yet, we must also treat these allegations with respect and ensure they are investigated to the fullest. No victim of abuse should ever be forced to suffer in silence, but to have ones own mother not support their daughter in this... No one should be made to suffer alone. Sherilyn has spoken out. I hope we can all show her genuine support and let her know she’s not alone.

4: With You, I Feel Peace
Summary: Grace makes a decision and she gets to bond with the new people in her life
TW: discussions of child abuse, self-depreciation, and wound care from abuse
Disclaimer: This story has Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit, and Nancy Benoit. If this bothers you bow out now because they're here to stay. Nancy and Chris have never been together in this story, Chris is with Eddie and Nancy is with Taz (thank you for the idea @sinderellanightwolf) and the mother of Tyler (HOOK).

(Pictures aren't mine)
A week passes quickly before Grace's eyes and she's never felt so... safe before. Eddie and the girls are so kind and Nancy has been by almost every day. She really loves Joanie as well who, with Nancy, decided to teach her to throw punches. The only thing that scares her is every day she waits for Marcus to come through the door and drag her back into hell. She traces the healing scab over her mark and shudders. She looks down at the shield with crossing swords and smiles softly, before cleaning and bandaging the cut. "I hope I find you soon." She whispers as she kisses the top of the gauze lightly. "Gracie? Are you coming to the gym?" Eddie calls out from the bottom of the stairs.
She grabs her book bag and hurries to the stairs, smiling when she sees him. "Yes sir, just need shoes."
"The girls are coming too so I didn't know if you wanted to stay home and get some alone time."
Her stomach flutters when he says home. "I didn't think you'd want me here alone." She mutters.
"Of course you can be here alone; you live here as long as you want, Grace." She smiles tightly and continues down the stairs before walking with him to the kitchen.
"Thanks Eddie, I really appreciate it. I know how much you're risking by keeping me here."
“I got those pictures developed by the way.” He says as she grabs an apple, and she freezes for a moment. “If you needed to use them for anything. I want to get you to a doctor too, just for a checkup, but we can wait on that.”
“Papa! We’re ready!” They are interrupted by Sherilyn. “Gracie! May I have an apple too?”Â
"Here you go, it's the last one so you can have it and I'll grab some blueberries and grapes." She cuts the apple up and looks around for a bag to put it in.
"Here; that's nice of you to do that." Grace shrugs and smiles as she takes the bag from Shaul.
“She likes apples so she can have it since it’s the last one and she doesn’t demand, she asks.” She looks to see that Sherilyn is distracted before dropping her voice and focusing on the bag. “My brothers never asked and if I talked back to them, it was usually answered with a hand to the face. I know I’m new here, but I really appreciate how you and your family have taken me in. I don’t want to step on any toes, I swear.” She finishes bagging the apple pieces and walks to Sherilyn. “Here you are Sherilyn, I cut it for you too.”
“Thank you, Grace!” She smiles sweetly and Grace returns it.Â
“Come along, mi corazón, let’s get to the car while Gracie gets her breakfast together.” She turns away and heads to the refrigerator.
“You’re not you know?” She jumps and spins around barely saving the fruit.
“Huh?” She asks confused as she sets things down on the counter and looks at Shaul.Â
“Stepping on any toes. I know you’re not here to replace us and I know our dads love us so much that they would never do that. I’m not saying we’re going to be best friends after a week, but I do want to get to know you. Papa and Dad have huge hearts and they’ll help anyone who needs it. I hope you’ll stay here so that you’ll get the help you need.” She doesn’t give her the chance to answer before leaving the kitchen so thankfully she doesn’t see the happy tears she caused.Â
They arrive at the gym and Nancy and Tyler are already there. Grace loves the young boy and his quiet nature. She puts her fist out for him to bump but doesn’t offer a good morning like everyone else because he seems to get grumpier when they make him talk. He looks up at her with a confused cock of his head and she starts to take her hand back when she feels the light touch of his knuckles. She walks over to Nancy and sees her bright smile.Â
“Great choice with him, sweetheart.” Nancy cups her face before running a thumb down her cheek and Grace is proud of herself for not flinching. “You’d think with me and Taz as parents he wouldn’t be so quiet and to himself.”
“I’m pretty quiet too so I get it.” She shrugs and slightly presses her cheek into Nancy’s hand more. “Sometimes sounds, especially first thing in the morning, are too much for me so maybe he’s the same. Either way, fist bumps work until he’s ready to talk to me.” She laughs lightly and steps away. “I was actually hoping I could talk to you about something?”
“Of course, you can always come to me! Come on this way.”Â
She follows Nancy to the office and shuts the door before sitting down in the chair. She puts her elbows on her knees and her hands clasped under her chin trying to decide what she wants to say and how to ask. Nancy pulls up a chair to sit in front of her and knocks her knees gently against Grace’s.Â
“Whatever it is you have to say I’m here for you.”
Grace exhales slowly and looks Nancy in the face. “I’ve been looking up ways to get emancipated, but I would need help. I have to show that I can financially take care of myself, can make my own decisions, and that I can prove that separating from my parents is best for me. I already have my money, but that won’t last forever, and Eddie took those pictures of the first day here.”
“I’m sure Eddie will hire you here so that you have a job on file, and we will help in any way you need.”
“The only thing I’m worried about is that you or Eddie could be fined or go to jail for letting me stay with you and knowing my mom she would do it just to spite y’all.”
“Don’t you worry about me and Eddie, sweet girl, we can definitely handle ourselves and our husbands are probably the most overprotective men I’ve ever met. I’ll talk to Eddie about getting you set up with a job and I’m sure we can find you a place near here and us and-.”
Grace clears her throat to get Nancy’s attention. “A-actually, I was hoping that Eddie’s offer of the room was still available. I’m hoping that I can enroll in my senior year at the high school and graduate.” She looks away and focuses her gaze on the desk. “M-maybe I can stay with you sometime too; a-after Taz meets me of course. I’ve already talked to Chris on video call and he’s all for it. I-I just- this is the only place besides José’s gym that I’ve felt safe, and I don’t want to go anywhere else-.”
She’s cut off from rambling as Nancy pulls her into a hug. “Oh, shit, I’m sor-!” She exclaims as she tries to pull away, but Grace throws her arms around her and hugs back.
“You and Joanie have felt safer in one week than my mom has my whole life.” She puts her face in Nancy’s shoulder. “All of you have; so please say I can stay.” She pulls away and looks in Nancy’s teary eyes.Â
“Oh, of course you can, Gracie. We’ll take care of everything, I promise. Why don’t we go tell Eddie your plan and then we can go shopping!” Nancy beams at her.Â
“Shopping for what?” She asks confused.
“For stuff for your room: furniture, decorations, new bedding! You name it! That way it can be yours and we can buy some stuff for my house for when you come over too!”Â
“I-.” She doesn’t get the chance to protest.Â
“Nope! We’re going shopping and you are not to bring money.” Nancy claps and laughs.Â
“Can the girls come too, then? Make it a girls’ day?”
“That sounds wonderful, sweet girl. So, come on let’s go talk to Eddie.”
Grace looks around her room -her room-Â at the new furniture and runs her hand across the soft navy-blue bedding. Her new bookshelf is already a quarter of the way filled after Nancy set her free in a secondhand bookstore.Â
She looks at the bedding set for a moment and runs her hand across it to feel the softness. She closes her eyes and remembers the worn-out blanket she had had for years, only soft when she imagined it was and never warm when she needed it to be. She’s startled out of her thoughts when she feels a small hand wiggling itself into hers and looks down to see Sherilyn who smiles up at her.Â
“That one’s pretty! Do you like it?” She grins back but looks at the price tag and balks.Â
“Yeah, but it’s pretty expensive so I thought I’d look around more.”
“None of that now, sweetheart. Do you like it?” Nancy smiles as she nods. “Then let’s grab it! Oh, and Shaul found you something too in the furniture section.” She rolls her eyes and shakes her head before grabbing the size that Nancy tells her to grab.
Eddie fixed up her furniture and he and Joanie let her direct them to where she wanted everything no matter how tedious. Shaul and Nancy helped her make the bed and set up the bathroom with ease and laughter while Tyler watched from the desk chair. Sherilyn surprised her the most when she sweetly placed a new light pink blanket on the end of the bed and Ghost on the pillows.
“All done! It’s so pretty! Do you like your blanket?” She asks excitedly. “Shauly and I picked it for you!”Â
Grace discreetly wipes a tear away from her cheek. “I love it Sherilyn, thank you so much.” She hugs the younger girl before looking at Shaul and silently asking for permission.Â
“I’m glad you like it, amiga.” She gives Grace a slow, tight hug before grabbing Sherilyn’s hand. “Let’s let Tia Nancy help Grace out some more and tomorrow if she’s okay with it we can come back.”Â
Nancy waits until they leave before turning to her and grinning. “Everything you hoped for?”
“And more, ma’am.” She looks around the room again. “I’m so in love with it all and this blanket from the girls is amazing!”
“Well Taz wanted to do something for you too so next week you and I will go for a girls’ day to Barnes and Noble and get you some more books, maybe some lunch or coffee too?”
“You’ve already done so much though; all of you have.” She shakes her head and sits on the bed.Â
She feels the bed shift beside her. “None of us think this is too much and technically the girls’ day is a gift from Taz. He wants you to have this after I told him about how your eyes lit up in that bookstore.” She pushes a lock of Grace’s dark hair behind her ear. “We’re not doing anything for you that we wouldn’t do for our children and it’s not like we’re gonna go do this all again next week. We got you your essentials that will last for a good while and you can be comfortable in your space now, okay?” She grabs Grace’s hand and squeezes gently.
“Okay, I appreciate all of this so much, I hope y’all know that and one day I hope to pay your kindness back.”
Nancy kisses her on the temple before hugging her and getting off the bed. “You don’t have to, but I know that’ll go in one stubborn ear and out the other.” She places a hand on her cheek briefly before dropping it to her side again. “I’ll let you decorate some on your own and I’ll see you next week when Tyler and I come back, okay?”
“Thank you, Nancy; I’ll see you next week. Tell Taz I said hi!”Â
A knock on the open door brings her back to the present and she turns to see Eddie. “Hola cariña, ¿cómo estás?”
“Muy bien, Eddie, gracias.” He smiles softly. “How are you?”
“I’m good, just got off the phone with Chris. He should be home sometime next weekend, gracias a Dios.” She watches as he rubs his hand across his hip subconsciously.
“Is that where your mark is?” He jumps slightly and blushes before chuckling. “Sorry, just curious.”
“It is my mark.” He pulls his sweatpants down slightly to show her the top of it. “A rose inside a maple leaf; it’s very us I think.” He has a dopey look on his face, and she giggles. “What about yours? It’s always covered up, so I haven’t seen it yet, if you don’t mind me asking.”
She uncovers the mark and holds out her arm to him. “Not at all! It’s a shield with two swords crossing in front of it. If it describes my future, I hope those swords never cut me.” She pets the mark with her finger lovingly.Â
He gently grabs her arm. “See how they’re in front of the shield? I think the shield is you and they will protect you from any blows. That’s my guess anyway.”Â
“I hope so.” She places a hand on his arm to get his attention. “Thank you for today by the way. It’s like I’ve been in a dream all day; I’m just waiting for the alarm clock to go off and find myself back in San Antonio.” She lets out a depreciating laugh.Â
“Well get used to waking up here in El Paso, mija. You’re stuck with us now. You are so welcome for everything and thank you for letting us get it for you. Starting next week, I’m gonna have you put in some hours at the gym, okay? Just so I can have a paper trail for your employment.”
“Okay, awesome! José let me file and run the front so I’m good at that and it might free up Joanie to be on the floor more.”
He ruffles her hair sweetly. “Good idea, cariña. I’m going to let you get some sleep; see you in the morning.”
She shocks them both when she hugs him quickly. “Good night, Eddie.” She pretends she doesn’t see him wipe his eyes as he leaves the room.Â

3: For One So Small, You Seem So Strong
Summary: Grace gets to El Paso, makes new friends, and feels safe for the first time.
TW: discussions of child abuse and food as a punishment
Disclaimer: This story is gonna have abuse in the beginning. I used a lot of my own experiences for this story so a lot of what Grace's stepfather, mother, and siblings do is my personal story that I exaggerated a little (but not much). THERE IS NO SA; it's all physical, emotional, and mental. I was very lucky to be saved.
This story has Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit, and Nancy Benoit. If this bothers you bow out now because they're here to stay. Nancy and Chris have never been together in this story, Chris is with Eddie and Nancy is with Taz (thank you for the idea @sinderellanightwolf) and the mother of Tyler (HOOK).
Flashbacks in italics.
I only claim Grace and her family; everyone else I'm borrowing.
(Pictures aren't mine)
She jerks violently at the hand on her shoulder and the driver smiles apologetically when she wipes the sleep from her eyes. “I’m sorry ma’am but we’ve made it to El Paso.” She rubs her ribs and nods tiredly. “Do you have someone picking you up or do you know where you’re going?”
“I’ll manage, sir, thank you for waking me up and for bringing me here.” She smiles at the confused look on his face. “Have a great day!” She waves and heads off the bus before sitting on the bench.Â
“Apologies, mija, are you Grace?” She freezes at the masculine voice and hesitates to answer. “My name is Eddie Guerrero and José Lothario told me that he was sending a girl named Grace to me. Is that you?”
She whips her head to the side in shock before shaking her head and reminding herself that he’s just a person. “Y-yes sir, I’m Grace. It’s really nice to meet you.” She gives him a smile and holds out her hand.Â
He grins and chuckles before shaking her hand. “He told me you were sweet and polite.” He looks at his watch and seems to make a decision. “Why don’t we get you something to eat before I subject you to Joanie and Nancy’s mothering, huh?” She cocks her head to the side in confusion before shrugging and agreeing.
“You don’t have to ya know… I’m sorry you have to take care of me at all, but I had nowhere to go.” She says as they start to walk down the street.Â
“Hey, I volunteered to take you and I know my husband will love you. He’s a quiet man but he’s a very good man. We also have two girls that you’ll meet, Shaul and Sherilyn; Shauly is going to be fifteen in October and Sheri will be ten very soon.” She smiles at the mention of an October birthday.
“My birthday is in October too.” She states quietly.
“What’s that?” They make it to a diner, and he holds the door open for her. “Booth or table?”
She looks around and points to a booth in the less crowded part of the diner. “Oh, I said that my birthday is in October too, like your daughter.”Â
He smiles brightly at her. “What day?”
“Halloween.” She mutters and waits for him to call her a devil like Marcus did.Â
“Hey guys! Eddie! New friend?” A waitress comes over and greets them enthusiastically while dropping off the menus.
“Hey Amanda! Yeah, this is Grace! She’s gonna be staying with us for a bit hopefully. Grace, this is Amanda, she’s our favorite waitress.”Â
Amanda scoffs. “He says that about all of the waitresses.” She stage whispers to Grace and it makes her giggle. “It’s nice to meet you! What can I get y’all to drink?”
“It’s nice to meet you too. Can I just get a water?”
“Of course, sweetie! And a tea for you, Eddie?” She sends a smile to the older man.Â
“You know it, bonita.” He waits for her to walk away before turning back to Grace. “Nancy’s going to love you, kid; her favorite holiday is Halloween.” Her heart flutters and she blushes softly. “What did I say?” He asks confused.Â
“Oh, um, i-it’s nothing.” She covers her mouth and drops her eyes when the stutter shows up. “S-sorry I su-stutter when I’m nervous. I-It’ll stop soon.” She utters quietly, hoping he won’t be annoyed.
“Hey, look at me.” She looks up at him hesitantly. “José didn’t tell me a lot, but he said enough; no one’s going to hurt you here and you can stay as long as you want. ¿Entiendes?”
She nods and looks away. “IntentarĂ© creerlo, eventualmente.” She mutters and is thankful when Amanda comes with their drinks.Â
“Here you go, lovelies. Now, y’all know what you want?”
She looks at the side options and smiles. “Can I just have some fries please? With a side of ranch?” She closes the menu and hands it to Amanda.
“That all you want? You can order whatever.” Eddie declares.
“That’s all, I’m not that hungry.” She grins, hoping he’ll drop it.
“Alright, I just want my usual, please.” He hands her the menu too and laughs at her eyeroll.Â
“One day I’ll get you to pick something else mister. I’ll get those put in and get it out soon.” She turns but stops for a moment and faces Grace again. “If you want to order anything else, you let me know.” She turns and walks away before Grace can answer.Â
She interrupts Eddie before he can ask. “I don’t eat a lot. I know José told you enough about Marcus for you to get an idea, so I’ll tell you a bit more. He used food as a punishment, and I didn’t eat a lot, so I guess my stomach adjusted and shrunk.” She shrugs. “I don’t really know but I do know that if I try to eat big meals, I’ll be sick.”
He nods and she’s thankful that he doesn’t push the envelope. “Okay, I’m sure there’s a way to work on that but for now, but for now just make sure you eat when you’re hungry okay?”
She chokes on her sip of water. “You’re talking like you’re gonna keep me awhile.” He sends her a sad smile.Â
“I hope you’ll let us; you seem like a good kid from what José told me. He wouldn’t have sent you to me if you were a bad kid, not with my girls or Nancy’s son, Tyler. So, you can stay the week and if you decide you want it to be permanent, we’ll work on getting you free from your mom and stepdad, sà mija?”
She feels tears start to run down and she quickly wipes them away. Eddie hands her a napkin and she sends him a smile.
They talk about any and everything and Eddie is kind enough to not make her elaborate on anything she doesn’t want to; he just moves on to the next subject easily. Grace tells him how much she loves him as a wrestler and how Woman is her favorite, to which he gives her an amused look that she can’t decipher. She loved the stories of his husband and girls and how they decided to use a surrogate to start their family.Â
“Why did you decide to retire?”
He gets a far off look on his face and smiles sadly. “I was having some health issues, chest pains and such, so Nancy and Chris made me go to the doctor. Long story short, my heart was worse than we thought, and I got it checked out just in time to save my life. So, I decided to retire and open the gym, then Joanie came to help out.”
She shakes herself out of her thoughts when they reach the gym, and her eyes go wide. “Oh my gosh! I love it!” She looks around and spots a familiar face. “That’s Chyna.” She mutters and Eddie laughs.Â
“Yeah mija, that’s Chyna but her name is Joanie, and she works with me while Chris is gone.” He points to someone to the side of them and waves them over. “And this is Nancy.” He smirks. “Nancy this is Grace, she’s a big fan.”Â
Grace turns and freezes. “Hey sweetie! I’m Nancy!” She holds her hand out and Grace blinks for a moment before reaching taking her hand and shaking it. “Aren’t you the cutest?”
She shakes herself again and tells herself to get ahold of herself before she looks like a fool. “I’m sorry about that. Hi, I’m Grace Parker. It’s really nice to meet you.” She drops her head slightly and blushes.Â
She feels Nancy’s hand gently cup her chin and it feels safe, nothing like the fear she felt from her mother’s hand. “There is nothing to be sorry for. When Eddie called me and told me he would be having a new guest something told me I should be here.” She tilts Grace’s face up to look her in the face. “I can tell it was the right decision.” She drops her hand from her face and smiles. As she watches Eddie talk to Joanie about him and Nancy taking her to the house to get settled she can’t help but feel that small sense of dread about Marcus and her mom. Have they realized she’s gone? Do they actually care?
According to the alarm clock on the nightstand it’s two in the morning and she’s wide awake. If someone were to ask why, Grace wouldn’t have a good answer. She’s not scared of these people (surprisingly), and she actually has a bed, not just a mattress on the floor. She likes the daughters, and she thinks they like her too; they didn’t seem to hate her for being in their house, so that’s a win. So why is she crying?
“Come on in, Grace.” He opens the door and lets her and Nancy in first before following them and setting her bags on the floor. “Mis hijas! Come here please!” Grace looks around the beautiful home in wonder.
“Papa! You’re home early, oh hi.” Grace focuses in when Nancy places a gentle hand on her back and waves at the two girls in front of them.Â
“Hi, I’m Grace.” She smiles nervously.Â
“Come on girls, why don’t I make some food while Papa shows Grace around, okay?” Nancy leads them off to the kitchen and mutters something to them that makes her nervous.Â
She taps at her collarbone as she watches the three walk off. “I hope they or you don’t think I’m taking up space. I just-.”
Eddie slowly puts a hand on her shoulder so she can watch him and smiles. “Nonsense mija, Nancy’s just better at explaining things sometimes depending on the situation. Now come on and let’s get you set up in your bedroom and you can call José too.”
He leads her up the stairs and to a beautiful bedroom with a huge bed and its own bathroom. She can feel tears start to well in her eyes and she hopes they won’t fall. Eddie turns to her and grins softly at her.Â
“It’s beautiful sir, really, thank you so much. It’s too much though, I can sleep on the couch or something.” Eddie shakes his head and sets her things on the bed. “No cariña, Chris and I want you comfortable for as long as you stay. It’s a bit bare right now because Chris wanted you to pick your own things out, should you choose to stay with us.”
She is busy looking around the room and whips her head to him. “Choose my own things? W-why?”
He looks confused. “Because this would be your home and you deserve to decorate how you want. We let the girls decorate their rooms when we moved here officially too.”
“I-I’ve never even had a bed, sir, just a mattress on the floor and Mom only bought me what I needed so people wouldn’t question her. I-I’m just confused not ungrateful, I promise.”Â
“You are absolutely allowed to say no Grace, but may I hug you?” She thinks for a moment before allowing a short hug that she pulls away from when her ribs start to scream. “Let’s get you fixed back up and then I’ll leave you alone for a bit to freshen up and call José, okay?”
A knock on the door scares her and she lets out a shaky come in. She lets out a sigh of relief when one of the girls opens the door.Â
“H-hey, Sherilyn, right?” She smiles at the slow nod and gets a smile back. “What’s up? Are you okay?” She discreetly wipes the tears from her eyes and sits up.
“It’s your first night and TĂa Nancy said that that can be scary, so I brought you one of my friends.” She whispers excitedly before comingÂ
over to the bed. “This is Ghost and he’s a good protector so I thought he could sleep with you tonight. If you want that is.” She shrugs and hugs the white bear to her chest and Grace spills more tears.Â
“Thank you Sherilyn, he seems like the perfect protector, I’ll be sure to give him back in the morning, okay? But let’s get you back to bed.” Sherilyn holds her hand out and Grace gently grabs it before letting her lead them to the hallway where Shaul is sleepily waiting.Â
“I thought she may go to your room; did she bother you?”
“Not at all and either of you are welcome any time.” She hands Sherilyn off to her sister and Shaul pauses for a moment.
“Aunt Nancy says you didn’t have nice brothers.”Â
Grace stiffens. “They followed after their daddy… I can’t fault them for that.” She skirts the question.Â
“Nosotros no hacemos eso aquĂ.” Shaul mutters before walking away.Â
“AsĂ que estoy aprendiendo.”Â
Grace wakes up early the next morning and she’s confused before the next two days flash before her eyes. She lays there for a moment and hopes sleep will take her under again, but it never comes so she decides to get up and get ready for the day. After a shower, she softly goes down to the kitchen with Ghost in her arms and is surprised by Nancy sitting at the island.Â
“Good morning sweetheart; how did you sleep?”Â
“It was rough at first, but Sherilyn let me borrow Ghost to sleep with and it got better.” She smiles to herself at the memory.
“Sheri’s a sweetheart and easy to love; she loves just as easy too. Not like my Tyler for sure.” She points to the couch using her coffee mug where Grace can see a sleeping boy with wild hair. “He’s gonna blame me for that hair one day.”
“He looks adorable.” She makes a cup of coffee for herself and silently asks if Nancy wants more. “I thought I would make breakfast.”
“You don’t have to; Eddie and I usually make something when I’m in town.” She stares at Grace for a moment before continuing. “You don’t ever have to live the way you did before Grace and we’re going to help you away from them whether you stay here or not.”
“Why? Why are you and Eddie so ready and willing to help someone you just met yesterday? I don’t mean to sound ungrateful but w-why? She turns to face the sink as her breathing picks up slightly and she focuses on her breathing. “I just don’t understand, and I want to.” She says slowly.Â
“And that’s a valid thing, it does seem strange from your point of view; to go from what you did to overly helpful people? Your brain must be screaming at you to run and run far, right? You don’t have to believe this but we’re doing it because we can, and we want to. No strings attached for you Grace; you can walk away at any time.” Nancy makes her steps loud so that Grace can hear her coming.Â
“No strings? Just help?” She’s crying again and she hates it.Â
“No strings sweet girl.” Grace sighs softly and nods. “Now why don’t you and I cook together?”
Grace smiles. “I’d like that.”
They make a big breakfast to feed everyone in the house and Grace makes herself two scrambled eggs and a bowl of fruit. She asks Nancy questions and learns that El Paso is her family’s second home, and she stays here when Taz is away for business. Eddie seems surprised when he sees Grace is still there that morning and Sherilyn seems happy as well.Â
“Good morning.” She gives them a small wave. “I helped Ms. Nancy make breakfast; I hope that’s okay.”
“Sà absolutely, whatever makes you comfortable, but you don’t have to ever.” Nancy nods while he talks.
“I told her that Eddie.” She smiles at Grace, and it warms her like the sunlight.Â
She feels a soft tug on her shirt, and she looks to see Sherilyn. “Hey good morning! Here’s Ghost back; thanks for letting me borrow him last night.” She grins at the younger girl.Â
“You should keep him; he seems to like you a lot.”
“A-are you sure? Won’t you miss him?”
“You’ll be here so so will he.” She shrugs and walks off to join the sleepy Tyler and Shaul as if it’s the easiest solution in the world.
Grace can feel Eddie and Nancy’s eyes on her, but she can’t stop petting her new friend and protector.
