Legacy Spoilers - Platinum
So now that the two major events have already been spoiled, now to list the stuff that my favorite Dex Holder will do.
Also, in the end, Platinum remained my favorite Dex Holder to the very last. Just counting the years since I started writing with Pokemon Special stuff (2009-2020), other than the brief moment when Platinum’s name hadn’t been revealed yet, she has been my favorite Dex Holder for the entire time.
Like before, discretion, spoilers and semantics and yadda yadda. And much to no one’s surprise, this one is LONG since it turns out that Platinum is participating in vast majority of the plot events, if not all of them.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Platinum warns Y about her Dragon Pokemon evolving too quickly. Y gets severely discouraged, thinking that her favorite senior doesn’t have much faith in her abilities.
- Worried that Y would rush even more to prove herself, Platinum spends a lot more time training with her, in order to help her get better control of her Dragon Pokemon.
- Blue is infected with a mysterious disease and suddenly collapses during a girls-only trip with Platinum, White, and Y. Platinum takes her to the hospital and quickly realizes that the situation is very unusual and severe.
- Platinum thinks it’s her fault as she sees just how depressed Red is upon seeing Blue dying, as she’s the one who helped them get together.
- Platinum is absolutely devastated when Blue dies. As Red falls into deep depression, she is unable to comfort him whatsoever as she blames herself for his misery. As a result, she is unable to do anything to prevent him from disappearing shortly after Blue’s death.
- Platinum notices that Moon is distancing herself from her, and becomes more depressed. Diamond, Pearl, White, and Y try to cheer her up but they are not particularly successful.
- Silver finds out that Team Rocket was responsible for Blue’s disease and death, and wages a solo war against the organization. Crystal tasks Gold and Platinum with finding Red for the upcoming fights.
- Platinum finds Red in a bar in Viridian City, and is quite shocked to see just how much he had changed in the past month, and how aggressive he had become, since he was even glaring at her constantly. She is crestfallen as she knows that this is her fault and tries her best to keep her distance from him.
- Y’s Mega Garchomp goes berserk during a fight against a small Team Rocket force. Y attempts to calm it down, but the Mega Garchomp winds up accidentally stabbing her through the chest with its scythe-claw. Platinum was unable to intervene as she was busy fighting her own opponents. Y manages to survive barely due to the quick response from White and Moon. Y falls into a coma and Platinum falls into shock, realizing that she had failed to protect her junior and had failed to prevent this foreseen rampage.
- Platinum starts to lose composure as her guilt, pain, and fears are starting to take toll.
- Platinum demands Moon to tell her the truth about what had been happening. Moon reluctantly tells her everything, Platinum is shocked as she realizes that her beloved “sister” and junior had been going through such pain in another region while she herself had been enjoying her time with friends while completely unaware, and is quite hurt to realize that said junior had been deceiving her for months now.
- Platinum ends up greatly hurting Moon out of her anger and pain, demanding if this was how Moon was repaying her for all that she had done for her.
- That night, White sees Moon running away but fails to catch up to her. Instead, she talks to Diamond and together, talk to Platinum. Platinum deeply regrets her words and hastily runs off to find Moon.
- Platinum fails to find Moon and goes to enlist Sabrina’s help in finding her. Sabrina reports that an unusual energy signature belonging to Moon had surged in a Team Rocket facility.
- Black and White are dispatched to scout ahead. But they soon drop out of contact, and Platinum goes to investigate the facility herself. Platinum finds Black unconscious near the “entrance”, and wakes him up.
- Platinum and Black wander through the seemingly haunted and twisted facility to find White and Moon.
- Platinum stumbles upon Moon’s thought-impressions, and is able to hear Moon’s thoughts as she descended into madness. Moon’s final thought-impression was her endlessly repeating the phrase “I must protect her”. Platinum realizes that Moon had already been killed and faints. Black tries to console her once she wakes up, but fails.
- Platinum and Black eventually find White hung in a large chamber filled with dead bodies of the Team Rocket members of the facility in similar states. The markings on White’s wrist show that she had been tied up before she was hung, indicating that this wasn’t suicide but rather, murder. Platinum deeply regrets allowing Black and White to scout ahead, and falls into depression.
- Black swears revenge and charges off but Platinum doesn’t follow him and stays next to White’s corpse.
- Platinum is almost swallowed by madness as she surrenders to the darkness but is interrupted as Moon’s ghost appears.
- Moon’s ghost tries to attack her, but manages to recognize her. Platinum approaches Moon’s ghost as she kneels, and weeps as she embraces her. The sadness and sincerity break through Moon’s madness and the two are able to reconcile.
- The reconciliation comforts Platinum just enough to give her the strength to push forward. She carries White’s body on her back and leaves to find Black.
- Platinum finds Black mindlessly walking around, as his blinding rage had subsided and is now swallowed by depression. She manages to comfort him enough to pull him out of depression.
- Platinum finds the command center of the facility and begins to poke around to see what Team Rocket was up to. Platinum finds details about the K3 project and that Team Rocket was attempting something in Sinnoh.
- Black searches through the security camera archives and finds the footage of Moon being killed. Platinum sees the footage as well but having already reconciled with Moon, she manages to overcome her tears and remembers the location to retrieve the corpse.
- Platinum returns with Moon’s corpse and sees the security footage of White being hung. She notices that the one murdering White is Black, who had been possessed by the overflowing curse upon coming in contact with the twisted Mega Banette.
- Black had somehow managed to overcome the revelation, so the two proceed to leave the facility.
- After one last encounter with Moon’s ghost, Platinum leaves for Sinnoh to have Moon’s corpse buried and given a fitting funeral in the Berlitz Mansion graveyard.
- Diamond and Pearl accompany Platinum to Sinnoh for the funeral and to investigate Team Rocket activity. After the funeral, Diamond and Pearl take time to cheer up and comfort Platinum.
- Cynthia alerts Platinum that massive unstable energy had been emanating from Mt. Coronet. Platinum, Diamond, and Pearl join the Sinnoh Gym Leaders in investigating the energy, and discover a forced fusion of Dialga and Palkia.
- With the help of Giratina, Platinum, Diamond, and Pearl are eventually able to assist the Sinnoh Gym Leaders in separating Dialga and Palkia. Platinum recognizes the scientists responsible for the fusion are indeed from Team Rocket. The three Sinnoh Dex Holders return to Kanto.
- Once Platinum returns from Sinnoh, she joins the other Dex Holders in assaulting the main research facility where the K3 project has been developed.
- Inside the facility, Red and Platinum reach the research and development section of the facility, deep underground. They find a storage room filled with weird biological matter in jars and pods. Platinum watches a strange ball of brown hair in a large jar, and the object slowly turns around in the fluid, revealing an open pair of blue eyes and pale skin. Platinum notices that the object is a badly deformed human head and the eyes begin to blink.
- Red finds Blue inside a large pod and breaks it open to save her. Platinum rushes to assist but then realizes the Blue inside the pod is feral and doesn’t actually have a mind. The feral clone lashes out at Platinum but Red breaks the clone before it can do any damage.
- Several more failed clones escape their holding cells and swarm Red and Platinum, forcing them to fight their way out.
- Red and Platinum realize that all they are seeing in this chamber are failed clones of Blue, ranging from near complete bodies to horribly deformed masses. Red believes that these clones are the result of this K3 project, and vows to destroy everything related to it.
- Red and Platinum fight through the facility to get to the central lab. They interrogate some of the researchers and find out that there is a completed clone of Blue, and that she is the K3 project.
- Platinum tries to convince Red to spare the completed clone.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Good Ending
- Platinum successfully convinces Red to spare the completed clone. Red leaves Platinum to finish up in the central lab while he rushes off to find and save Blue.
- Platinum assists the other Dex Holders in destroying the data and the remnants of the K3 project, and then destroys the facility after everyone escapes.
- All the remaining Dex Holders head to Unova to stop the remnants of the rogue Team Rocket elements from awakening Kyurem and forcing a fusion with Reshiram and Zekrom. They are too late, however, as Kyurem had successfully fused with its two counterparts to become the original Dragon once more.
- Blue and Platinum analyze the forced fusion’s energy waves to spot weaknesses. With their analysis, the Dex Holders are eventually able to destabilize the fusion and force the three to separate once more.
- Afterwards, Platinum assists Red in installing Blue’s mainframe in his house so that Blue would have no issues maintaining her artificial intelligence.
- Red thanks Platinum for her invaluable assistance, and apologizes for being cold to her before. The two reconcile and are happy.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Bad Ending
- Platinum fails to convince Red to spare the completed clone. She attempts to stop him from recklessly destroying everything, hoping to snap him out of his anger.
- Platinum battles Red to the best of her abilities, but she is eventually defeated. She still tries to stop his reckless thirst for vengeance, and he ends up attacking her directly as he vents his rage and frustrations on her, blaming her for everything.
- Red leaves her broken and bleeding in the central lab. Platinum tries to stand up to chase after Red, but she doesn’t have the strength to do so.
- Platinum is left abandoned as the facility is destroyed, and the building collapses. She survives the event, but is now buried deep underground in rubble.
- Platinum apologizes to Red and Blue for causing them so much pain by helping them get together, and for failing to stop Red from doing something that he would regret forever. She apologizes to White and Moon for causing their deaths and being unable to save them whatsoever. She apologizes to Y for leaving her all alone now, and for not being able to prevent the rampaging Dragon Pokemon.
- Lastly, Platinum apologizes to Diamond for not being able to spend her life with him, and leaving him to live with her death.
- The door to the lab breaks open as the feral failed clones of Blue have all escaped captivity when the building collapsed and destroyed their cells and pods. Platinum closes her eyes as she would rather not see the horrible deformations of her beloved senior as they tear her apart. Platinum is quickly killed in the hands of the feral swarm.

We have a new citizen in Mount Phoenix:
Raphael Lyon Terrell, who is known by no other name; a 25 year old son of Dagda He is a freelance artist and front-end clerk at Sombra Muerte.
FC NAME/GROUP: Jung Jaewon/ONE (Soloist) CHARACTER NAME: Raphael Lyon Terrell AGE/DATE OF BIRTH: 29th April 1994 (25 years old) PLACE OF BIRTH: Lyon, France OCCUPATION: front-end clerk at Sombra Muerte, freelance artist (painting mainly) HEIGHT: 176cm WEIGHT: n/a DEFINING FEATURES: Raphael has quite the collection of minimalist tattoos to express his love for art. He has two moons intersected on his nape, two triangles on his right wrist, a small wave on the inside of his left middle finger, a flower behind his right ear, two suns on his left ankle. He has other larger tattoos on his arms that he added quite recently. Besides these, he has multiple ear piercings, and a tongue piercing.
PERSONALITY: Indecipherable. Raphael’s personality can be all over the place, and quite hard to predict. He suffers of a—now—mild version of NPD, so he can be self-assured, egoistic and self-absorbed. He does not understand emotions well, and is used to get whatever he wants and needs. Raphael would probably observe a person before approaching them, trying to understand their body language. Despite this, he is very charming. He knows how to talk to people, he is witty and knowledgeable, probably the best conversation partner. But, he loves chaos. He cannot be close to people for too long, because he has a tendency to destroy them, or influence them. Because of this he never got the chance to explore love, or friendship beyond necessity. He would not know how to handle such emotions, and would probably not even recognise them. His world is dictated by his synaesthesia, he associates people with colours, hues and shades or an entire range of colours. As an artist, this helps him when painting. He regards this as a superpower, but there is nothing supernatural about it whatsoever. This mental association helps him describe the world in colours, making it seem more beautiful than it actually is. HISTORY: tw: mature language, violence, murder, mention of suicide
The coldness of winter covered the land with a heavy snow, and the poor woman barely found a roof to hide under. Sounds familiar? The name of a saint, the story of saint, a poor mother, and a cold winter. Wrong. Raphael Lyon Terrell is no saint. The issue at hand, his birth was miraculous, some might say god-blessed. The only ‘blessing’ was the penis that penetrated the poor woman. She loved the sex, but hated the aftermath. She was a Korean emigrant, better said criminal. She fled to France in order to escape a faith worse than death: prison. She was a devious woman, she liked giving her body for a penny. She adored inappropriate advances. No wonder a God had his way with her, who can blame him? But the seed left behind was merely a parasite in her eyes. She tried getting rid of it, but somehow she could not. She did not want to give him her name, so she never did. Her disassociation from the infant started at his conception. She gave birth in hospital, and willingly disappeared before she could see the baby. Naturally, he was sent to the orphanage. He did not have a name or identity for an entire year. They called him ‘Gaston’, because he was in every sense of the word a stranger. Luckily, a family took a liking in him. There was something about his eyes that they could not deny. So they took him, the brave family Terrell, and named him Raphael. Lyon, the lion, represents his strength. But he still believes it was a rather mundane association with the city he was born in.
Needless to say, he had a great life. The family was absurdly wealthy and well-connected. So wealthy that they considered an education in France to be inferior, and sent Raphael to—ironically—England where he studied at a private school. He lived in Newcastle upon Tyne for a large part of his life, so long in fact that he has lost the sweet sound of the English-French accent, replacing it with a strong British one. His French was still impeccable, according to his adoptive parents. Until he turned fourteen, his life has been perfectly peaceful. Painted in a sky blue, whirled around a cyan ribbon. He was an excellent student, predicted to have a bright future. He was talented in Arts, but Science came as a close second. But of course, the seed of evil still lived inside of him. Though as obvious as it was that Raphael was adopted—given his peculiar black eyes, black hair, and pale skin—he never asked about his real parents. He did not want to hear anything about them, nor connect in any way. On top of that, it was not like his adoptive parents knew them in any way, shape or form. But this changed.
Taking a life is an interesting experience, quite life-changing. Watching someone take their last breath, struggling to hang on just a little longer. Raphael remembers his first with glee and sometimes melancholy. It was this side of him that did not let him connect to people properly, despite having moments of euphoria. When he lost his innocence, he discovered his real power. Chaos. He was attracted to chaos, he would bathe in it, taking it in his veins, overdose. The colour of chaos was magnificent, a Prussian blue with hues of the once lost cyan, sometimes descending into navy. The first person he killed showed him how it feels like to have power. It was an accident, even if Raphael does not want to admit it. A bloke tried to grab him, and he tripped. Face met the ground, it broke like porcelain. And he died instantly. Raphael was never convicted, but his parents had to move him all the way to Dublin, where he started his third life.
Shortly after his first kill, Raphael was visited by an unexpected guest. It was not a physical meeting, but it surely felt like it. In his sleep, Dagda visited him for the first time. He presented himself as being his biological father, a being people do not call human—he is shit at explaining, Raphael thought. Nevertheless, Dagda expressed his disappointment. As a vessel to both life and death, powers such as Raphael’s should be used wisely, moreover they should be used only when necessary. And some other bullshit Raphael blocked out of his mind. He was not allowed to kill again. Psychological torment however was not part of the deal, so Raphael found his loophole. It was only later that he discovered just how easily it is to keep lives in a limbo.
The torment was euphoric, borderline orgasmic. The power, the thirst. The blues.
Destroying innocent souls was far more enjoyable. He watched them suffer, struggle to stay alive and eventually end their lives because of the pain. He calls it a win. Dublin was a blast. As Raphael grew up, he started enjoying the night life. His school records were off the charts, the boy had the looks and the brains. Not to mention the ladies and the men. He put himself through shit situations, and came out victorious. He touched a sword by accident, and saw how the life of the person who touched it next drained from them, hanging in the air like energy ready to be grabbed. Raphael, enthusiastic about this incredible discovery, cut the persons arm, watching how life came back to them, as though it has never left in the first place. The more he discovered about his power, the thirstier he became. He was bound to make a mistake. And so he did.
His father was most displeased to see his son spiral into madness. Raphael was diagnosed with NPD, or narcissistic personality disorder, at the fragile age of sixteen. In other words, he had all the makings of a serial killer, and was predisposed to end up like Narcissus. Therefore, Dagda had to set a trap for Raphael and let him get caught once. At seventeen, he was convicted to one year in prison for alleged drug possession, and some other shit he cannot remember. The torment he had to endure in prison was the solution. His adoptive parents were disappointed, and almost disowned him. But when Raphael turned eighteen and was freed, his entire personality changed. Or so they thought. He behaved like the old Raphael, a studious and elect student. He graduated Arts, and because of his love for the distorted beauty of art, he continued to pursue it. However, old habits die hard. The torment he inflicted on other people continued, but he no longer allowed them to die forever, like he would before. He kept his torture moderate, hidden, but still pleasurable.
When he turned twenty-four, his father thought it would be best for Raphael to live in a place where he can meet others with special abilities like his. Other people, who could potentially help him evolve, or at least entertain him. People, who can show him new colours, emotions and a more fulfilled life.
PANTHEON: Celtic CHILD OF: Dagda POWERS: Raphael can use any weapon as a taker and bringer of life, from smaller weapons like knives and darts, to larger ones like swords. He has a connection to the realm of spirits through magic, and can sometimes feel the energy of the weapons he chooses. He can sense if the weapon was used to take a life, or save a life. Occasionally, he would hear voices – though it is uncertain if it is due to his connection or mental state. Raphael is strong physically, and finds himself very hardly exhausted. Still, he is not invincible and given the right opponent he could lose or even die in battle. Given that his father is a patron of justice and fairness, there are certain protections he has casted upon his own son. However, his magic is not strong enough to subdue Raphael’s powers, and given the right person and circumstances Raphael can still do whatever he pleases.
STRENGTHS: the weapons he touches become his (they would not obey any other master, on the contrary, they would often turn against anyone else who tries to use them); he can sense energy from beyond through his weapons (more so if they have been used in violent deaths); he is knowledgeable in a lot of things including practical things, and is a quick learner; he knows how to talk to people, because he is a great observant and can guess (more often than not correctly) what it is that they desire to hear
WEAKNESSES: he is not allowed (and physically cannot) harm innocent people due to some magic Dagda uses on him; he is not immortal and given his particular taste for danger he could end his life accidentally pretty quickly; unlike his father he cannot do magic (although if taught, he could probably do some magic – though not to the extent Hecate’s children would for example); he is mentally fragile and disturbed (could potentially go insane)

Major Essay 1
Rheanne Harkness
Professor Timothy Greenup
English 112

All Sides of the Characterization Spectrum: Evolution Verses Devolution
In the event that the average college student has taken even the most basic literature course, he or she should at least be somewhat familiar with and be able to tell the difference between three-dimensional characters, two-dimensional characters, and stock characters across a variety of different narratives - graphic novels being no exception. Three-dimensional characters (or “round characters”) may be traditionally thought of as the most important asset that a work of fiction has other than an engaging plot, atmosphere, or tone. After all, they by default, end up being portrayed as the most like real people, and as such, have the best chance of connecting with the reader on a deeper, more personal level, and audience identification can often be an essential part of what makes a story truly impactful to those who read it. No matter how much water this way of looking at round characters happens to hold though, that doesn’t mean readers of a particular work should entirely dismiss the roles stock and/or two-dimensional (or “flat characters”) play in strengthening its content as a whole - even if those roles are seemingly limited to serving as stepping stones that guide a potential round character as he or she goes through change. This begs the question: If both the flat and stock characters in a simple, straightforward comic like “Batman: Year One” only exist to help round characters in their development, are these same types of characters tailored to that same purpose in the more complex and formally depicted graphic novel that is “From Hell”?
To begin answering this question, there must be some semblance of comparison between the two pieces’ main characters and how interactions with other less imposing characters affect their motivations in the long run. In “Batman: Year One”, almost, if not every other character that Jim Gordon has ties to (particularly the few female characters) can be considered as more of a catalyst for change in his character than anything else. Take Gordon’s wife, Barbara for instance, throughout the comic, the reader never gets to learn much about her apart from the fact that she’s the supportive, pregnant housewife of his. Because Barbara is kept at arm’s length from so much of her husband’s troubles within the force until the very end of the comic and we only hear brief mention of the couple’s marital problems from Gordon’s perspective, Barbara represents nothing more than a stereotype, and thusly cannot be described as anything more than a stock character. But both her and Gordon’s unborn child are important nonetheless since Gordon’s desire to protect them is established as the driving force of his character from page one onwards. Sargent Essen is a representation of the “Femme Fatale” stereotype that’s seen so often in Film Noir; and again, the only bit of backstory we get from her is told to the reader from Gordon’s perspective in a single panel. She gives Gordon internal conflict to work through that works in tandem with the external conflicts he’s already facing. Three-dimensional characters are expected to have moments of weakness in their convictions. So, by having Essen as the vehicle through which Gordon deals with that weakness by having him torn between two places, (his obligation to his family and his newfound feelings for her) it makes the reader want to keep following him on his “Hero’s Journey” as well as call into question just how far he’s willing to go in order to do what’s right, as he himself isn’t so sure anymore - much like an actual human being might feel in the same situation.
If Lieutenant Gordon is the most prominent three-dimensional character from Frank Miller’s “Batman: Year One”, the most prominent round character from Alan Moore’s “From Hell” would be Doctor William Gull. Gull by contrast, doesn’t let other characters define who he is as one could argue for Gordon, (unless of course, the historical figures that Gull reveres so much - like William Blake and Nicholas Hawksmoor, are taken into account). It is seemingly established just how deep-seated Gull’s lack of empathy towards his fellow man really is from the first moment we see him purely out of plot convenience without any residual reason for it that wouldn’t have to be inferred by the readers on their own. To this effect, the essence of Gull’s character could simply be chopped up to his profession, in that many doctors do experience a loss of empathy while experimenting on human bodies for medical benefit; on top of which, he’d taken to dissecting animals (as is elaborately showcased in several disjointed panels with a mouse on the grounds of Beaumont Rectory) out of mere curiosity long before becoming a doctor in his adult life (Campbell Ch 2 p 6).
This aspect of Gull’s identity is significant and does give the audience some insight as to why he might and would eventually take on the “Jack the Ripper” persona. However, I don’t think that just being an emotionally detached doctor is enough to account for every facet of Gull’s character as much it sets the groundwork for those facets overall. Considering Gull’s long-dead heroes to be actual characters doesn’t feel terribly practical. So, it’s probably safe to assume that Gull has been shaped as a person by what he’s been exposed to more than who he’s been exposed to. The only time Gull lets others influence his actions at all is when they come into conflict with what he believes or stands for - like the whole reason he is committing these murders in Whitechapel to begin with. Gull is a firm proponent of the notion that men are superior to women, so the closer he gets to disposing of all these filthy prostitutes and by extension, fulfilling what he feels to be his divine purpose in life and throughout history, the more savage and less methodical the killings themselves become. It’s only when Gull briefly travels to the future a second time (in a purely non-character-driven plot point) and is so disillusioned by what he finds that he begins to lose heart with what he’s done. Up until then, though, Gull knew exactly who he was and what he wanted. Any other character who observed him (round, flat, or stock) could only do just that, observe and offer nothing (even unconsciously) that could sway him of his convictions whatsoever.
Conversely, what puts a major rift between “Batman: Year One” and “From Hell” in terms of how the protagonists can be thought of as round would be that Gull does not evolve as a character so much as he has devolved by the time his role in the story finally reaches its end. Nowhere does this erosion become more apparent than directly after Gull travels to what would have been the present day at the time this novel was written. More specifically, at the point where Gull takes the heart of the women who may or may not have been Mary Kelly out of the fireplace hearth and watches it burn on the tip of his surgical knife, a look of wistful melancholia has dawned his face, as if to say that only for a moment, even he realizes how empty and fruitless his endeavors toward any sort of divinity through murder truly were on principal. Although, of course, Gull would never dare admit it to anyone - least of all himself (Campbell Ch 10 p 29). This single panel image is made all the more telling when one pairs it with what Gull declares to Netley across a middle row of panels a few pages later as most of his face is eerily covered in shadow, but with an air of resignation about it: “I‘m finished. I have been climbing...all my life, toward a single peak. Now I have reached it. I have stood and felt the wind. I have seen all the world beneath me. Now there is only descent. Only the valley. Would that I had died there...in that light above the cloud line.” (Moore and Campbell Ch 10 p 33).
The icing on the cake and its effectiveness at cementing just how far Gull has fallen afterwards is really dependent upon whether or not one believes that he truly did come close to ascending to Godhood just before death in an insane asylum at the apex of chapter twelve. Being that Alan Moore leaves the answer widely open to interpretation, I personally would pose the argument that his apparent journey through time and space was merely a series of fragmented illusions that play out similarly to the concept of a person’s life flashing before their eyes as they’re about to die. Only in Gull’s case, his life wasn’t flashing before his eyes, but rather his abstract ambitions and ideas of what moving on to a higher plane of existence might be like were. If there is indeed a grain of truth in Gull’s last words to Netley the night he killed “Mary Kelly”, then the image of a poor old man mumbling incoherently within the walls of an asylum and never moving past his unhealthy obsession with achieving historical/spiritual greatness fits much more consistently with someone who both literally and figuratively has nowhere left to go but down.
Ultimately, I feel that the secondary characters in “From Hell” did not aid in developing Doctor Gull as a character in the way that they did for Jim Gordon in “Batman: Year One”. This is because, unlike Gordon, Gull never really forged any deeply personal relationships with others that were impactful enough to dictate his actions. His life experiences as a self-righteous doctor as well as a time traveler deprived him of the ability to genuinely empathize with the people around him. Thus, those experiences were consequently the only thing left to propel him through his journey and eventual derailment that awaits Gull at the end of the story. Every action of Gordon’s by contrast was performed for the sake of the people he cared about. Regardless of how uninteresting these flat and stock characters may have been to the audience, it’s no wonder that their existence as Gordon’s driving motivation made for such a relatable protagonist who we want to see rise above the challenges his environment has set for him by the time his story concludes. As far as Gull is concerned, he isn’t meant to be a relatable protagonist as much as the complete opposite. So, if the flat and stock characters aid him at all, it’s to mirror the audience members’ impressions of him (which are mostly rooted in fear, intimidation, curiosity, respect, and annoyance). I suppose in this way, if some characters need not be three-dimensional to be effective, one could also say that they need not be at the forefront of the round character’s main concerns for he or she to go through intended changes set in place by the author of the story either - still being just as effective, but in a different way!
