Mexico and California Forge Stronger Ties in Pursuit of Common Goals

  Delegation of California State Senators Meets with Mexican Officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Mexico and California are taking significant strides in their partnership to address critical issues such as climate change, migration, security, and electromobility. In a notable meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Velasco Álvarez, the head of the Unit for North America, warmly welcomed a delegation of California state senators, led by Senator María Elena Durazo. The discussions focused on strengthening the deep ties between Mexico and California while respecting the sovereignty of each nation.  

A Model Relationship - Mexico and California

Velasco Álvarez emphasized the exceptional nature of Mexico's relationship with California, considering it one of the most prominent among the different states of the US. He expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the Mexican government for the respect shown by Californian authorities to the entire Mexican community residing in the state. Simultaneously, he reaffirmed Mexico's unwavering respect for the sovereignty of the United States.  

Comprehensive Immigration Reform - A Shared Objective

While maintaining respect for each other's sovereignty, both delegations concurred on the significance of comprehensive immigration reform. They recognized the millions of undocumented Mexicans residing in the US, who significantly contribute to American society and economy. The importance of providing security and protection to these immigrants became a focal point of the discussion.  

Addressing Climate Change and Shared Challenges

The meeting also addressed the pressing issue of climate change, particularly focusing on border water management. Both sides acknowledged the urgency of combating drought in the Colorado River basin and undertaking the cleanup of the Tijuana River. The close collaboration in tackling these environmental challenges underscored the commitment to a sustainable future.   Seizing Opportunities for Mutual Benefit Velasco Álvarez stressed the significance of embracing nearshoring opportunities to foster tangible and positive results, particularly in the CaliBaja region. By promoting bilateral cooperation, the aim is to boost commercial potential and foster innovation to address the shared border's needs.  

Embracing Mexican Culture and Communities

The California state senators expressed their keen interest in understanding and learning about Mexican culture and its various communities, especially the indigenous population. This deeper understanding aims to strengthen efforts in collaborating with the significant number of Mexican men and women residing in California.  

Renewable Energy and Security Concerns

The discussions extended to issues of renewable energy and security, where both delegations exchanged their viewpoints. The California senators wholeheartedly endorsed their state's commitment to furthering mutual cooperation.

Senator María Elena Durazo led a distinguished delegation from California, including Senator Benjamin Allen, representing District 26, Senator Steven Glazer, representing District 7, and Senator John Laird, representing District 17. The delegation also included Shannon Shellenberg, the director for International Affairs of the Senate, Victoria Ewing, the Spanish language and translation consultant for the Senate Rules Committee, and Donna Kaylor, the Director of Public Affairs for Pfizer, Inc. In this fruitful meeting, Mexico and California strengthened their resolve to work together on crucial issues that impact both nations.
