Animated movies of 2018 so far...
So, I’ve been watching as many animated movies as I could this year, and while I haven’t seen all of them, but of the ones I have seen, I thought it would be fun to kind of make a best and worst list.
I’ll go in order of worst to best of the ones I’ve seen, give a brief description of what I liked or didn’t like about the film, and then give it a rating.
Starting with:
Peter Rabbit: Full disclosure, I actually walked out of the theatre before the movie was even half-over. The jokes were unfunny and predictable, the characters were horrid, and the CG was really ugly. If there was one thing I regret the most about this year, it’s not asking for a refund from the theatre. 0/10
Sherlock Gnomes: Yeah, don’t act as though this wasn’t gonna be on the lower end of the list. The surprising thing though is that, it wasn’t as bad as I thought. Yeah it was largely unfunny, had forgettable songs, an obvious twist that became a desperate twist, a pretty crap villain and an inter-species romance which is weird on it’s own until you remember that both these characters were in the first movie (Gnomeo and Juliette) which makes it confusing.
Positives though, the movie looks pretty good, especially at the climax, they almost pulled of the classic Sherlock Holmes ending and there were a few things that did make me laugh. Not a good movie, but not an awful one really. 4/10
Batman: Gotham by Gaslight: Yeah, wasn’t a fan of this one. While it is alright, the two things that keep it down for me are the artstyle and the story.
The story is formulaic with other animated Batman movies, Batman is tasked to defeat a foe on his level, he gets mistaken for the foe and has to fight the foe and evade the authorities. Nothing special. The artstyle is ugly, ranging from brown and muddy to pastel and vivid, and neither are really appealing.
Also dissapointed with the lack of any real steampunk elements, but that is more a nitpick than anything else. 6/10.
Early Man: I really like Aardman animations, and Early Man was pretty good. I really enjoyed the humour of the movie, and as it is a comedy movie that is all that needs to be said.
While the story was basic (it’s a sports movie as well, what do you expect), I could get past it fr the sake of the comedy. 8/10
Incredibles 2: Despite the need for a seizure warning, the movie was fun, thrilling, funny and even had some thought provoking ideas. While the movie does give a lot of lip service to Elastagirl, and does have some cringey moments, it was nice seeing Bob try to be a father, it was nice seeing other super heroes and people that were advocating for the supers to return.
Also, GOODBYE LASSETTER! 8/10
Sgt. Stubby: An Unlikely Hero: Sgt Stubby surprised me with not only a beautiful palette, but also good characters and nice moments of character.
I was also impressed by the movie actually making Stubby out to be a useful part of the army, and instead of having a cliched “give them the puppy dog eyes then do something heroic in the climax” character. 9/10
And finally;
Isle of Dogs: Amazingly, my two favourite animated movies this year (so far) star dogs, which is weird considering that I’m actually afraid of dogs.
Isle of Dogs was actually very interesting, such a fascinating watch that, I kinda want to review this movie. But to keep it short, I liked really everything, the animation, the characters, the fact that they spoke their mother tongue, the use of shadows, everything. 9/10
And that is basically it so far, of course I have two others movies on my list right now (Going to try and watch at least one of them tomorrow), but for now, that is enough.
I also should mention the newest animated Scooby Doo movie, Scooby Doo and Batman the Brave and the Bold. Saying that I watched it is akin to saying I am into being dominated, really only true if you really stretch what you mean. (For the record, no I’m not into being dominated, but I like being bitten, so...) I really only watched the first few minutes of this one, I don’t even think it was a full ten minutes before I gave up.
Anyway, that’s all for now.
