Things I Know About Airplanes Part 1:
First things first !
There are just some things you cannot control. So let go of that perfect travel itinerary. Air travel is made possible by so many factors its impossible that on everyday in every way everything goes perfect !
Is air travel safe ? Absolutely. Is airtravel convenient? HELL YAH. Is airtravel fun, cheap or relaxing? Go fish . So remember unless you want to swim , walk , or drive to your destination This airplane business is overall pretty cool.
I would have titled this post “ tips to make you a better traveler” , but that would mean that I deem myself queen supreme of all sky travel ever.
( and there is nothing that grinds my gears like a couple people calling themselves world travelers after their cruise to Cabo on spring break ). So this is just based on what I know as a flight attendant .
the plane will ( and I cannot stress this enough ) NOT , wait for you.
- SORRY !!!!! If you’re late the plane will not wait for you. If you miss your connection the plane will not wait for you. Let go. Stop stressing. I know this is a hard pill to swallow. You got this. Stop yelling at airport or airline staff because no matter what we do ( NO MATTER WHAT WE DO aka WE CANT DO ANYTHING) if we are delayed aka late or if you are late, Your plane is gone. THE PLANE WILL LEAVE AT THE TIME IT SAID IT WOULD. Much like you committed to being there at that time. I don’t make the rules. The rules pay me to be at work on time & here I am.
Why can’t the plane wait for you?
The world doesn’t revolve around you. How many more delays would you have caused if every time you were late for a connection or a flight , if it waited only for you. Just you. Did you ever think about the other 200 people trying to get to their connections. & maybe you haven’t thought of anyone else. BUT TODAY IS THE DAY YOU START. If you really wanna brain storm you can also think about the flight that needs your aircraft after you THOSE PEOPLE TOO . So just think about others. Bad weather ? Can’t go . Broken airplane ? Good thing we have awesome pilots and mechanics that can detect such dangers. No airplane ? Come on! you’re smarter than this. Stop being upset about it. Nothing you can do. Rebook your flight. Sleep in the airport if you have too or buy a hotel if you REALLY have to. Swallow your pride. You can travel across the country in less than 5 hours in a supersonic tin that sometimes has WiFi and movies ( more about that later ). Life is good.
Tip from a flight attendant, my personal fav , I swear by it:
Book the earliest flight you can. Like 5 am early!!!!! You are less likely to be delayed in the morning. There is less air traffic and the airplanes come from the hangers after being serviced overnight. If anything goes wrong you have time for a back up plan. Not being a “morning person “ is a lame excuse for an adult human these days . ok .
I’m honestly not sure if I’m giving airplane advice or just life advice at this point tbh. Moving on !!!!
2. Headphones and other things you forgot to pack.
Ok so. I’m for sure not about to tell you how to pack the perfect carry on because there is no such thing ( don’t let any YouTuber tell you so ) But I can tell you about the common items that people forget to bring with them on airplanes
( based on multiple true stories )
- headphoneS / MULTIPLE PAIRS / meaning the ones for your phone ( Bluetooth or lighting port AND the old regular ones ) if the airplane gods smile upon you the day of your flight , you might have inflight entertainment WOW free movies in your seat back! that’s insane right . ( especially since you’re paying for transportation and not to be entertained ) but if you forget the regular headphones, you can’t watch them ! I always also download other movies to my phone or tablet as well just Incase.
- A blanket or jacket. It’s true ! Breaking news ! not all airplanes supply blankets. Flight attendants get asked all day long multiple times if we have “ any extra blankets , it’s so cold in here “ so. Wear a jacket & closed toed shoes ?. Flight attendants have minimal control over the temperatures. Why did you wear shorts and sandals? YOU KNOW AIRPLANES GET COLD. Just like movie theaters are cold. You never ask someone at the concession stand to warm up your theater. This isn’t a house it’s an airplane. My airplane outfit is always nice jeans, plain tee, socks , vans and a jacket. Always. I will swear by it, I’m always the right temperature.
- Portable charger bank. This ones lame and I hate it. Not all airplanes have charging outlets. And it sucks I know. I work there. Can you imagine walking into work and there being no outlets. Well I feel your pain on this one. All of the airplanes are random. Some airbus models have screens and WiFi and chargers. And some have none. Luck of the draw. If you cannot find the charger in your immediate area. A flight attendant cannot make one for you. Be smart ! bring a portable charger bank. If the airplane is and old Boeing 767 ( super random plane we use for some Europe routes and select domestic ) it has cigarette lighter chargers ( like in old cars ) in some rows **** . Just bring a portable charger and avoid landing in a foreign country without access to information. Save yourself.
- SNACKS why do so many people overlook the importance of the airplane snack. Unless your flight is over 3 hours food will not even be available for purchase. And over 3 hours the food is expensive and mediocre. Complimentary meals are only served on long haul international or routes Jfk - SFO JFK - LAx and JFK - San ( direct ) . So airplane snacks are important. I usually get 2 choices . Something to munch on while watching my movie and one snack that actually is a meal. For example : I bring sunflower seeds and a Pb and j. Or if I’m feeling extra !!! : a quick bacon egg and cheese from the airport Starbucks, large venti ice coffee and Chex mix. You get the idea. It’s an airplane not a kitchen. It’s like a sky bodega. Don’t be unhappy. bring your own stuff. Especially if you’re vegan, or allergic to everything. PLEASE I BEG YOU! DONT BE THE FITNESS GURU WHO NEEDS MORE GRASS FED PROTEIN AT 38000 FEET. ( actually happened to me ) oh also people say that airplane coffee isn’t safe? Because of the water tanks. The Jury is still out on that: I will be your personal lab rat , I drink multiple cups of airplane coffee in one sitting. Make your assumptions and opinions. I will stay warm and caffeinated.
3. Hacks and tricks . Ok so we’re getting to the good stuff. I’m about to tell you the easiest way to be offered a free drink , snack , or in general special treatment on the airplane. Are you ready !? BE SUPER NICE AND PERSONABLE. Ok not exactly rocket science but seriously the SECOND you mumble under your breath, say something rude, get an attitude, look unsettled, or be annoying in the galley. You might as well kiss your chances of getting any special treatment goodbye. ( one person does something , the entire crew knows about it. rude passengers will not be rewarded . Being rude to airline staff never works . I’ve never seen it work) airline staff will most of the time reward good behavior. Wow are we back in pre-k? Or what. Ok now something more tangible . -BRING THE FLIGHT STAFF SMALL GIFTS. Most airplanes have 4 flight attendants on board. International has 12. If you walk on board and say “ hi I’m ______ seated in 23a ( whatever your seat may be ) I brought these for the flight attendants” almost 10/10 times we love it and tell the whole crew to take care of that person specifically. This is important : *You will probably have a flight attendant ask you “ thank you for the gift. do you need anything ? “* and that is your go to time !!!! That’s your time to shine !!!!!! If you want a free drink or snack !!!! Ask now!!!!!!!!!!! This is a real thing and it really works. Small gifts include : individually rapped candies, hand sanitizer, a pack of pens, any kind of snacks at all , a 4 pack of Red Bull/espresso 4 little bags of mnms, donuts or munchkins from Dunkin’ Donuts. Honestly it doesn’t have to be big or expensive! If you show up to your flight on time AND you’re nice to the flight attendants. Just wow . Doing better than 99% of anyone else on airplanes. Go you . If you are a high maintenance flyer this is your go to move to get on the good side of everyone on the crew. Or buy a first class seat ok ? A smile and some donuts go a long way. DO YOU WANT FREE WIFI ? Me too but unfortunately most of the time the WiFi is expensive and not at all free . BUT after take off if you connect to WiFi and the WiFi connection is sourced by the company “gogoinflight” ( you’ll know cause that’s what it’s called in your settings when you connect to WiFi ) I do have a trick. Gogoinflight is a company that sources WiFi for major airlines, if you have T-Mobile ( or if you know someone with a T-Mobile phone number *****) you can enter your phone number and boom free WiFi for an hour. FREE BEER AND WINE - actually free - on international routes ( not Caribbean) don’t be a jerk ! It’s an airplane not a bar. You’re an adult you know you can’t act drunk on airplanes. It’s actually VERY frowned upon and personal CAN call security on you. If you can’t drink 2 glasses of wine on the ground without dancing on the table , you can’t on the airplane. Oh and TRUST me I’ve seen the light while yaking in the airplane bathroom and THAT MY FRIEND!!!! will not be my final destination!!!

Things I Noticed While in Japan
Vending machines everywhere, that don’t just offer shit choices like water and soda. Coffee, flavored waters, “gatorade”, soda, etc. Wish we had these in America.
EVERYTHING’S CLEAN. I saw 3 - count them - 3 pieces of trash in Tokyo. There aren’t even garbage cans around but every city is by FAR cleaner than any city in the world everywhere else I’ve been.
All the playgrounds look like places kids go to die??? Very uninviting. Sorry Japan, your playgrounds aren’t that good
Everyone’s nicer? Everyone is literally so polite and helpful??? Coming back to America was hard because just being in the SFO airport I was bombarded with rude a-holes :/
Public restrooms are clean and have counters to put your purses. I miss that, I want that. (I got off the plane in America and had to pee and the first five stalls had piss and shit in them. Ugh)
Japan’s public restrooms also have cool ways of showing someone is using a stall (some had signs fall out of the doors with a big check mark or an X)
Their stalls also go all the way to the ground. Please America get with this
You’ll have a significant historical monument with regular society buildings. For example, by our Tokyo house we had a big shrine type thing for where the leader of the Shinsengumi was beheaded. Literally 30 feet away was a 24 hour McDonalds. So bizarre
Public transportation is better and cleaner
You don’t need to read of speak Japanese to go to Japan. (My sister and I knew how to speak/understand/read basics) The trains and signs all usually come with English. In Tokyo, the train will say it in Japanese then English for your stops and what to do. Very easy.
Japanese Dennys looks like a fancy restaurant with piano music playing.
If you have your boobs out (hey its a heatwave and super hot) they’ll let you know about it. My friends and I had some issues with this where they stare, laugh, talk with their friends and point at you, try to take pictures, holler, etc. Ngl Japanese guys made me more uncomfortable about a v-neck shirt than any American man has ever made me. 0/10
Cups of water they offer at restaurants? 0/10. Very small and they fill them halfway up. About two gulps of water per tiny cup. It was.... miserable in the heatwave. I would bring water bottles in my backpack to fill up my cup at my table. Sometimes I would order a cola or ginger ale just so I knew they’d give me a bigger cup and I wouldn’t go thirsty through my meal.
I don’t like that there aren’t paper towels in the bathroom but I managed. I just wiped them on my shirt or tried to get them to air dry real fast.
7/11 food is better than grocery store food. We ate there p much every day. Vegetables, noodles, onigiri, liquor, ice cream, etc. Even stews and stuff they heat up for you at the counter. I can’t go into an American 7/11 anymore.
The kids are so cute and polite???
Lot’s of activities that are just like $3 here, $5 here. In America, if you go to a museum, aquarium, zoo, etc it’s $20+ Most of the stuff we did there cost a couple bucks. It was great.
Foods cheaper there???
I saw 1 homeless person the entire time there in Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima. I’ve never been to a huge city and seen virtually no homeless people.
I love Japan, but after 3 weeks of getting stared at, I’m glad to be home and not get anxious over how many people go out of their way to stare at me
Never felt unsafe. I wouldn’t walk down my street in the dark (and I live in a relatively nice neighborhood). I could in Japan. Never felt scared or threatened. It was nice not being afraid for once??
Japan’s clean, polite, and functions immaculately. I want to live there.
#world#personal#i seriously would like to live there for a year or so#i miss it a lot#by far the best country ngl

Best Features of San Francisco Airport Taxi Service
If you are thinking of traveling to San Francisco then you most surely have heard of San Francisco airport, which is commonly known as SFO. SFO is one of the most famous airports in the United States and is a major gateway for flights to Europe, Australia, and Asia. SFO is also regarded as the second busiest airport in the state of California.
After landing at the San Francisco airport, you have to think about a hassle-free ground transportation service that will take away your tiredness for after the long-hour flight. San Francisco airport taxi service is here to serve you in making your journey completely free from stress.
Here are the advantages you need to get from these airport taxies.
No stress during travel
Traveling to an airport for a holiday should be fun; while that same journey, for business, should be enjoyable and calming, but with an atmosphere conducive to work. With a local airport taxi transfer, the professionals know the importance of being on time: with time to spare! To that end, the best airport taxi service providers are constantly monitoring traffic and other road conditions so that all of their reservations are dispatched with enough time to guarantee timeliness.
Several years of experience in the industry
For years the driving teams in most cab firms' airport transfer services have been specializing in trips to and from airports serving your locality, your region, and further afield. Since many companies specialize in airport services, they are nearly always full-service taxi companies with local drivers operating around the clock every day of the year in your town, so that they can take you wherever it is you need to go; locally, or nationally.
Drivers are friendly and professional
In addition to the focus on punctuality, you'll find that all of the drivers in the San Francisco airport taxi service provider teams are exceptionally friendly and courteous. They are committed to providing high-quality service and they require all of their drivers to complete a customer service training session before joining their company teams.
It is a recommendation to book in advance for this service. It will let you provide seamless service to your destination.

Thursday 27 December 2001 - My first post 9/11 international journey and the Staring Elf song
Hi everyone! Grüezi mitenand! Hallo allerseits! Üdv mindenkinek! Ahoj všetci!
US DE CH AT HU SK
Twenty years ago I flew on my first post-9/11 international vacation to Europe. This was about eight months after my last one in April 2001 when it was mostly in Italy and Switzerland. This time I am going to Munich, Zürich, Salzburg, Györ via Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava and Munich. I am flying from San Francisco to Washington DC Dulles, and making a connecting flight onwards to Munich’s MUC Franz Josef Strauß airport near Erding. This would be my second flight in winter to Europe since January 1997 when I flew from SFO to St Louis, St Louis to London Gatwick, overland travel to Frankfurt, flight to JFK and returning to SFO. I flew out of SFO on United, so it would be the present-day Terminal 3 concourse F. I think I used an upgrade to fly from SFO to Washington Dulles.
As for my audiovisual equipment, I had a Samsung 80 mm camera taking 35 mm film, not quite as fancy as my previous Evoca 115 but it did the job fine. Also I had a Canon 8-mm stereo video camera and an Aiwa HS-JS 479. This ironically for the Canon camera would be the last vacation, as it was very hard to find a reliable repair shop, and for some time from February 2002 until March 2004 I would go without video capability but would be fine with the other equipment.
As it was my first time boarding a flight after 9/11, there were more stringent security measures than in April 2001. For example, the security gates at Terminal 3 were moved immediately after the ticket gates. This was meant to increase the so-called “sterile area” so that airport security could screen passengers earlier and send away those who were not planning to fly that day. At the time, there was no restriction on liquids in carry-on baggage as there was after 2006. There was a set of restricted items and it was illegal to take certain agriculture items overseas without a license. This will be revisited on 9th January 2002.
I boarded the flight to Dulles and it was on a 767, so I was allowed to sit in Business Class for that flight alone. I cannot remember what was served for breakfast but it was a very tasty one. I did not watch the inflight movie but listened to music. One channel was spending part of its session playing the entire playlist of the Icelandic band Sigur Rós album "Ágætis byrjun". The song I remember the best was “Starálfur”.
Some time about 3 PM Eastern, I landed at Washington Dulles, Terminal D. Terminals C and D were since at least September 2000 quite a ways from the A and B terminals and the main terminal with ticketing and baggage claim. Transport between the terminals A-B and C-D was by “mobile lounge”. These were similar transport vehicles with a high ground clearance to the ones where you would board at a gate and proceed directly to the airplane. The one difference was the lack of “shark fins”, as those housed the mechanisms that allowed rising and lowering of the level of the mobile lounges, and the interterminal ones did not require such functionaility as they maintained a constant level throughout.
As for myself, I did not go to the Terminal A or B until April 2005, and that is for a later time. I stayed mostly in Terminal C until it was time to board the United flight to Munich. I had a snack in the meantime. I had only a ticket for Economy class, so I was in Economy but with an extra six inches of legroom but hardly any more luxurious than the regular Economy class. I boarded the flight, had my ticket and passport with me, and the flight took off about the normal scheduled time. There was not much snow to worry about. The flight over was smooth, I had my welcome drink and snack, supper and pre-landing breakfast. Breakfast was fairly simple, orange juice, yogurt, a pastry and coffee. Alcohol was free of charge in December 2001 up to November 2004 (as well as I can remember).
The flight was to arrive about 7:30 AM CET, so 6 hours ahead of US East Coast time. At that time of the year, the sun usually did not rise until 8:30 AM CET, at least not in Munich.
Next story - how easy was it to cross into a Schengen nation post 9/11? - the ET423 journey to München Hbf, the last day I ever did business in D-Mark, a historical journey from Munich to Zürich via Geltendorf and Lindau - hint: ABS48 subsequently changed it all. My first SMS text, and possibly my last visit ever to one of those “gentleman’s clubs” (since a few years went out of business anyway).
Hope you will join in tomorrow’s adventure!
Ich hoffe, Ihr nehmt am morgigen Abenteuer teil!
Remélem, csatlakozol a holnapi kalandhoz!
Dúfam, že sa zapojíte do zajtrajšieho dobrodružstva!

Routes: Where can I fly now? More long-hauls return to SFO United refunds
A weekly roundup of airline company and airport route and service news
By Chris McGinnis, SFGATE
Updated. 8: 59 am PDT, Saturday, June 13,2020
IATA has a brand-new interactive online map that tracks COVID-related government travel constraints– see link listed below.

IATA has a brand-new interactive online map that tracks COVID-related federal government travel constraints– see link listed below.
Image: IATA.
A new online map helps travelers learn more about COVID-related arrival restrictions worldwide; more foreign providers are returning to San Francisco and Los Angeles, but one most likely will not return up until next year; United reduces stringent rules limiting refunds when it cancels flights; United and Alaska will require travelers to complete health assessments; tourists to Alaska have a new method to get around the state’s mandatory 14- day self-quarantine; and New York LaGuardia cuts the ribbon on a roomy, shimmering new arrivals/departures hall.
Like lots of, you are most likely questioning where you can and can’t fly these days. To cut through the confusion, the International Air Transportation Association this week launched an interactive world map of COVID-19 guidelines
In path news, more worldwide carriers are coming back to San Francisco International in the weeks ahead. Worth and New York JFK; it is currently flying from Tokyo to Los Angeles, Chicago and Vancouver.
Air France’s latest schedule for July 6 to Sept. 1 reveals the airline company coming back to SFO with three weekly flights (Monday, Thursday, Saturday) to Paris CDG– although it will utilize a 777-300 ER rather of the A380 it formerly operated (Air France has actually permanently grounded all its super-jumbo A380 s).
KLM revealed last week that San Francisco is one of destinations where it plans to restore service from Amsterdam in July, along with Washington D.C., Vancouver and Calgary, although it didn’t offer specific schedules.
Emirates has actually a little revised its schedule for a resumption of San Francisco-Dubai service from what we reported last week.
At Los Angeles International, Virgin Atlantic now prepares to reboot its dormant London Heathrow path on July 21, together with service from LHR to New York JFK and Orlando– although it noted that it is keeping an eye on governmental travel restrictions “extremely carefully,” consisting of the U.K.’s new mandatory 14- day quarantine for showing up foreign nationals. And Turkish Airline Companies, which had closed down all long-haul flights, plans to start flying some of them once again this month, including three weekly Istanbul-LAX flights since June24 (Note: Turkish is providing a 40%discount to health care workers who schedule its website by Aug. 1.) Another airline company that closed down all long-haul routes is Air New Zealand, however don’t anticipate to see them return anytime soon CEO Greg Foran said this week the airline is not likely to resume any considerable long-haul flying up until 2021.
Thinking about flying to Hawaii or Canada? Listen to Chris discuss summer trips on KCBS Radio.
Perhaps it’s due to press from the Transport Department and customers, or maybe it’s due to the fact that the airline is including more flights to its schedule, however United is now making it much easier for consumers to get a full refund when the airline company cancels its flight. At the height of the industry’s pandemic-based flight cancellation tsunami, United was offering to supply refunds to travelers whose flights were cancelled just if it couldn’t get them on another flight leaving within 25 hours– assuming the traveler didn’t accept the rebooked plans. (Rather of money refunds, United used electronic travel coupons.) Then United lowered that rebooking time requirement for refunds to six hours, and now it is down to 2 hours— back where it was prior to this all started. Phew!
United had actually enhanced the rule to 25 hours since it was facing a flood of refund demands at a time when income from new reservations was dropping through the floor. Like other airlines, United was desperate to hold onto as much money as it could, so it had a huge incentive to make cash refunds harder to get.
Don’t miss a shred of essential travel news! Sign up for our FREE bi-weekly e-mail signals
Meanwhile, United today added a brand-new step to passenger check-ins, asking consumers to complete a personal health assessment type Passengers are anticipated to attest to the fact that they haven’t experienced any coronavirus-like signs in the 2 weeks prior to their flight and have actually not been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the past three weeks. They are also asked if they had contact with anyone who evaluated positive in the previous 2 weeks and need to accept United’s other safety procedures like using a mask on board.
Alaska Airlines stated it will add a similar requirement beginning June 30, asking fliers to submit a health arrangement during check-in (it can also be filled out on the airline’s mobile app). Alaska guests will have to confirm that they have not had any COVID symptoms in the previous 72 hours, or come into contact with anyone who did, and accept use a face mask. The health agreement becomes part of the airline company’s ” Next Level Care” program revealed today, which likewise guarantees that Alaska will block out middle seats at least through July 31 and will stop taking reservations when a flight has actually reached 65%of its seating capability. Boarding is now done by row number from back to front, and in smaller groups, Alaska stated.

New York LaGuardia this weekend cuts the ribbon on a huge brand-new Terminal B Arrivals/Departures Hall.
Speaking of Alaska, anybody flying into that state faces an obligatory 14- day self-quarantine.
The new Terminal B Arrivals and Departures Hall– serving United, American, Southwest and Air Canada– covers 850,000 square feet in four stories.
LaGuardia’s brand-new departures level has four check-in islands with 75 individual check-in kiosks and a central oversize bag check-in station, as well as 16 security screening lanes– three times more than the terminal’s predecessor. Last week, United opened a brand-new United Club located post-security near its gates; it’s 30%larger than the previous LGA Club.

256: 72 Hours in San Francisco - Where to Eat, Sleep, and Get About, Then Tailor to What You Love
"San Francisco is one of the great cultural plateaus of the world — one of the really urbane communities in the United States — one of the truly cosmopolitan places and for many, many years, it always has had a warm welcome for human beings from all over the world."—Duke Ellington
In 2002 I began my career in teaching - my first job was teaching 9th grade English in a small town at the bottom of South Lake Tahoe in northern Nevada. And on occasion, maybe two or three, I believe it was two, times I made the four hour drive to San Francisco for long weekends. I found a small boutique hotel near Union Square, walked and drove the hills (becoming more proficient with a clutch than ever before) giving my calves an exquisite workout, enjoyed a delicious brunch at the Empress Hotel with my mentor who showed a bit more of the city to me on a long holiday weekend, as well as drinks at the Top of the Mark, but each of my visits was well before Google Maps and the entire tech sector engulfed Silicon Valley and the city by the Bay, so I wasn't sure really where to go and just visited as far as my feet and my comfort would take me.
Fast forward sixteen years, and I finally had the opportunity to return to San Francisco.
Since before moving to Bend, it has been on my list of places to visit. After all, it is in many ways the West Coast's New York City. Understandably, each city is uniquely its own, but having visited Los Angeles, Seattle and many times Portland, Oregon, San Francisco isn't quite like any other west coast urban destination. In fact, I have to agree with Cecil Beaton,"San Francisco is perhaps the most European of all American cities". Now, New Orleans certainly is a destination unique infused with French and Spanish cuisine and history, but San Francisco involves more ease and community than any other major urban city I have visited, sports the most delectable food options, offers transportation that is varied and easier than any other American city I have traveled, as well as a temperate climate that is never too extreme in any season. Again this is my opinion, but perhaps Twiggy is right, "I’m just mad for San Francisco. It is like London and Paris stacked on top of each other".
But I am getting ahead of myself gushing about San Francisco. I'd like to share with you all that we experienced in a mere 72 hours this past week, offer up some recommendations, and perhaps encourage you to either visit or return to the Paris of the West (an old term used primarily in the late nineteenth early 20th century largely because of the three waves of French immigrants arriving in San Francisco beginning in 1849 with the Gold Rush, in 1852-53 when Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte III offering a national lottery of trips to California to rid the country of his intellectual opponents, and a third wave of many women and children as in San Francisco's early days, the city was comprised of 90% men. In short order, in 1852, six thousand of the city's 36,000 residents were French). No wonder I love this city so much. :)
I've organized today's episode/post into the three fundamental parts for any trip to any country/city to be most successful. Thinking of it as the tripod foundation of traveling with ease: knowing how to get around to wherever you want to go (transportation), knowing you have a comfortable and safe place to sleep at night, and knowing you will be fed to satisfy your appetite. Where to eat, sleep and get about.
Once these three decisions are made, reserved and settled, I am able to loosen up on the itinerary and also relax and look forward to my trip.
Let's begin the 72-hour visit to San Francisco. The good news is you don't have to make your plans too far in advance to still have a wonderful experience. Case in point, for our trip last week, the trip was decided upon in April. Plane tickets and hotel arrangements were made, and then one month prior to the trip, dinner reservations were made as well. The only piece of the three part puzzle was to tend to the on-the-ground transportation, which I had researched, and will talk about more below.
~Fisherman's Wharf - classic fisherman's boats docked.~
When to visit:
"The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." —Mark Twain
Depending upon the weather you hope to experience, as one of our Uber drivers who has lived in the city for decades shared with us, don't come in June, July and August and expect traditional summer temperatures. Nope. While there is the rare extremely warm day as there was a couple of weeks ago, the average high in the summer is low 70s - expect the fog to roll in and out throughout the day and if you're by the bay, the wind will rip through in the afternoon.
If you are looking for the idyllic weather, our driver, after sharing Twain's quote above, suggested coming in September and October. I quickly took note. The rain will abate in April and not truly return until November. Again, taking the advice of the driver, so readers who live in the Bay Area or who have lived in the area, please do confirm or correct.
Also, we traveled during the work week. The opportunity to arrive on a Tuesday and return on a Thursday was perfect for the pace of everyday life. Nothing was too extremely tourist-laden (there was still an abundance), the evenings were very quiet on the street as we had a street-side window, and traffic at the airport and getting about was as would be expected in any work day scenario - rush-hour, etc.
Whenever you visit, bring layers. One day we both were kissed by the sunshine more than we expected, but in the evening we needed a jacket. My mother packed her light-weight cashmere scarf, which was perfect. I saw many people with scarves. What did I forget, of all things? A scarf. I won't forget again. It is a city in which to wear a scarf.
How to Get Around Once You Arrive
BART - from the SFO airport, the Bay Area Rapid Transit is a very affordable and dependable way to reach the city. We took BART into the city with our luggage with great ease. It was helpful that the line basically begins at the airport, so you have a pick of where to sit and can get situated with your luggage before you get into the heart of the city at which time the train became very full (morning rush hour). The cost was $2.50/person versus a $45+ cab or Uber fare.
~waiting for the airport shuttle to take us to the BART airport stop~
Trolley/Cable Car - $2.75/adult; $1.35/senior - There are only three lines that the Trolley/Cable Cars travel, but they are easy to find on a transportation map. We relied primarily on the trolley throughout our trip. You pay in cash or can purchase a pass online. The fare is good for two hours if you buy a single pass. Each of the many cars we rode on were exceptionally clean, and the drivers very helpful.
Bus — We happened to ride a bus one evening as it was serving the same line as the trolley car we had arrived on. The transportation map makes it easy to see where to get on and where they stop, and the pass you use for the trolley/cable cars works the same way.
Uber/Lyft versus Taxis - We chose to use Ubers the entire time we were in the city when a trolley wouldn't get us where we needed to go and it was too far to walk, but we also wanted to make to our destination quickly (across the Bay Bridge, to the Golden Gate Bridge and to the Richmond neighborhood). I prefer to take Uber/Lyft because I know what my fare will be upfront. Taking six Uber rides during our trip, we were in a car in fewer than 10 minutes, the cars were clean, the drivers friendly if we chose to talk with them, and we arrived swiftly at our destination).
Where to Stay
While my list won't be long in this section, what I can share with you is where we did stay during our trip and why I highly recommend it. I know it will not fit everyone's budget nor be what everyone would prefer, but if you are looking for the following, you will be very happy with The Argonaut Hotel on Fisherman's Wharf:
Located in North Beach along the Fisherman's Wharf - ideally located for easy access to common sites: Fisherman's Wharf, Ghirardelli Square, a primary Trolley Line that will take you throughout the city, Ferry Building (via Trolley ride), Lombard street, and Little Italy.
Comfort - the beds are plush, the rooms are large, and you can reserve a room that will look out onto Fisherman's Wharf
Located in a historic building
The only hotel on Fisherman's Wharf
Quiet - granted, we stayed during a weeknight, but I could not tell we were staying in a city. No tall buildings surrounded us, we woke up to seagulls and even seals saying hello along the bay, and the street doesn't have many cars use it as it isn't a through street to anything of importance to locals or even tourists as the parking lots are set off the shore.
Impeccable service - we arrived early - 8:30 am, and while we didn't expect our room to be ready, they found one that was, even gave us a free upgrade and situated us before we went out exploring. If the room hadn't been ready, they would have stored our luggage.
~Fisherman's Wharf seen directly out our hotel room window.~
~wallpaper in the bathroom~
Where to Eat
As one Uber driver who has lived in the city for 22 years told us, San Francisco has always had a strong food culture. Boasting 5000 restaurants, whatever type of cuisine you prefer, you will be able to find it. While he couldn't guarantee it would be delicious fare at every destination, he did note that you can find many wonderful places throughout the city and Bay Area. So let me share with you four places I HIGHLY recommend.
Tartine - If you are looking for French bakery buttery goodness, visit Tartine Bakery (the original bakery that opened about 15 years ago) and/or Tartine Manufactory (sit down for breakfast and lunch). The two locations are about 10 short blocks away from each other.
Pearl 6101 Restaurant - Having been opened for about a year, this Richmond neighborhood located restaurant opens at 8 am for breakfast and lunch (closing 1t 2pm), and opens for dinner at 5pm, running until 10 pm. They have brunch on Sundays.
~the scrambled egg plate and avocado toast~
Boulettes Larder + Bouli Bar - Located in the Ferry Building on the far right corner next to Sur la Table, this two-part restaurant offers scrumptious seasonal and locally sourced meals. Boulettes Larder is the light and bright restaurant space that is open for lunch and breakfast (dinners are only reserved for special group occasions, as I learned later). BouliBar (where we dined) is where they serve lunch and dinner, and the pizza as well as other items on the menu will please your palette immensely. My slow baked King Salmon set atop a bed of millet and vegetables dressed in sparkling vinaigrette was mouth-watering delicious. Paired with a glass of rosé - yum.
~the dining room for Boullettes Larder (open to the public for breakfast and lunch; private group dinners in the evening)~
~Bouli Bar (open for lunch and dinners for the public)~
~Pistachio Cake with strawberry ice cream~
Chez Panisse - Yep, Alice Waters' famed restaurant in Berkley. A dream of a experience, of which I will share in detail on Wednesday of this week, so do stop by. Reservations are taken only one month in advance on the day you wish you dine, but one month prior. Call on that day, when hours of operation begin. Every night a different menu. Every menu is seasonal and sourced locally. You can keep your menu. I had mine signed by the waiter. That is how awesome and, perhaps in admiration I am, of this restaurant. It exceeded my expectations. Stop by Wednesday to find out exactly why.
~the entrance to Chez Panisse in Berkeley~
~the menus - guests can keep them~
~dessert: Savarin cake with fresh summer berries and candied pistachios~
Now it's time to tailor it what you love
Each one of us who visits San Francisco will come to the city for different and special reason. As I shared in last Friday's weekly newsletter with subscribers, my visit was all about the food in preparation for The Simply Luxurious Kitchen's upcoming second season. And the city did not disappoint. However, there were a few other places we took the time to see and experience, and I'd like to share them below in case you too might be curious to check them out.
Beautiful views of The Golden Gate Bridge - visit Baker's Beach
Consignment Clothing, designer options galore at reasonable prices - Goodbyes (two shops) on Sacramento.
To see an infinite amount of flowers - The San Francisco Flower Market
Luxuriate in the splendid scent of sourdough bread - Boudin at the Wharf (Fisherman's Wharf)
The Ferry Building - farmers market Tuesday and Thursday beginning at 10 am (small); Saturday at 10 am (large)
All of the shops inside the building are opened each day (this is also where Bouletttes Larder + BouliBar is located
Frog's Hollow Bakery is scrumptious as well and located next to Boulettes Larder
So many delicious food-inspired businesses inside.
Ghirardelli's Square — Of course, you will find the Ghirardelli's Chocolate shops inside this square, but there are also many other shops, boutiques and restaurants. The view of the bay is lovely, and the park in front, as it is situated next to The Argonaut, was some place I enjoyed just sitting and relaxing after a long day of exploring.
~Ghirardelli's Square in the background, park in the foreground~
With the 72 hour trip nearing an end, we decided to hop in an Uber to take us to the airport as we didn't want to lug our luggage onto BART amongst the crowds, although, it wouldn't have been impossible to do, we were just tired. In a swift 30 minute time period, leaving from our hotel, we were at the airport ready to return to Bend.
While I knew we had soaked up every minute of our trip seeing and exploring and eating, we also were able to take a nap each day which for me was absolutely necessary. But even with the naps, I slept deeply and quite more at length this past weekend than I have in awhile. What a pleasure this trip was, and I am thankful it is only a 90 minute flight away. Needless to say, with even more recommendations from readers, and places I look forward to visiting again, I look forward to returning.
"Leaving San Francisco is like saying goodbye to an old sweetheart. You want to linger as long as possible." —Walter Kronkite
Be sure to stop by the blog later in the week for a detailed post on Chez Panisse.

Three-letter code every hostie dreads
Many a hostie will tell you with a glint in their eye theyve seen it all in the skies. Theres a great horror story from a New Years Eve flight on an unnamed airline. Twin Americans boarded with cannabis gummies in their system and promptly took turns to green out, becoming very paranoid and unwell. The flight attendant said as soon as one of them was manageable, the second brother lost his mind too. From rogue body fluids to gruesome cargo items to privileged passengers these anonymous stories show why the coveted job of flight attendant isnt always the most glamorous. So strap in and prepare for a bumpy ride as cabin crew take to the internet to share their war stories, courtesy of the New Zealand Herald. SOME OF YALL ARE RATHER ENTITLED Reddit user and hostie Zlinerlabs relates a story of sky-high entitlement. Every so often we get the odd straggler who boards last who finds a vacant seat in first or business thinking that we wont know that they are from coach, they said. Spoiler: This doesnt work.
media_cameraThere is so, so much more to the job than simply this. Picture: iStock User Notweirdthrowaway had this to say. Not an attendant but was on a flight with really bad turbulence. It went on for about 10 minutes then the old lady next to me reaches up and presses her button. Attendant walks over to see if the woman is okay, the woman begins to yell at the attendant for the rough flight and that shes been flying her whole life and clearly the pilot has no idea what hes doing. The stewardess just walked away. Another person on the social media platform had a blood-boiler to tell. I remember flying into SFO (San Francisco airport) and going through the final walk-through asking everyone to wake up, buckle up, headrests forward, tray tables up and collect trash, they said. Halfway through, the pilot said, Flight attendants, be seated immediately which indicates a lot of upcoming turbulence. So I quickly started to trot through with my trash bag to my jump seat when a man yelled HEY! I was a few rows past him and he had his cup and wet napkin in his hand. I quickly said, I have to sit down and turned back towards the back galley. I then felt something hit me. I looked back and he had thrown his trash at me and was staring at me like the little (expletive) he was. I heard a few people gasp and everyone in the last eight rows or so was tuned in to the drama.
media_cameraFlight attendants put up with a lot of bad behaviour. DONT TRY TO SWAP YOUR WAY INTO AN UPGRADE User ConstableBlimeyChips is an attendant and this is their pet peeve. A type of behaviour Ive unfortunately seen too much of: Couple will book separate seats, the man in a premium economy seat with extra leg room, the woman in a normal economy seat, they explained. The woman will then play the sad sack and ask another passenger to give up their comfy seat so they can sit together. If the other passenger refuses (usually because they paid extra and literally dont fit in a regular seat), some will even complain to the crew. And all this to save a few bucks on the second premium seat. Doc_Choc added: I never understand the logic of this and how it works on anyone. Ive been the random person in a premium seat a few times, and when asked I decline and tell them theyd probably have more luck if the person in the premium seat traded theirs away. They always act like they hadnt thought of that and then move on to someone they hope is an easier mark. I cant imagine how Id react if someone tried to get the staff to move me. User I_got_em_coach reckons you might just have to play dead. Sir were are going to need you to move. Passenger, clearly reading a book, immediately goes completely limp in seat.
media_cameraWed keep those bare feet off the floor too, kid. IF YOU KNEW, YOUD LEAVE YOUR SHOES ON Please do not ever walk into a toilet with bare feet. I promise you, 9 times out of 10, that is not water on the floor, writes Reddit user HausofDarling. The toilets are often absolutely disgusting and get deep cleaned only at the end of a route For us this could be from one side of the world to the other imagine how lovely they are at the end of a 12 hour flight with 200 people using them. Seeyou_never adds: So many incidents occur on the plane that everyday passengers dont see or consider. My last flight an elderly man accidentally sh*t on the floor, stepped in it, and walked on like it was nothing. Pee and poop happens, all over. I feel like I witness an accident regularly; in their seat or in the lav. People get nose bleeds or their wounds open. Obviously, when we land, it is thoroughly cleaned. But in-flight our resources are limited. DONT CHANGE YOUR BABYS DIAPER ON THE TRAY TABLE. This also happens all the time. Its unsanitary and people use the tray table to eat! DEAD ON DEPARTURE As the crew members continued to list the horrors unknown to plane passengers, things took a dark turn. There is more often than not a lot of horrific things in the cargo, HausofDarling wrote. As flying is the quickest way to transport cargo, passengers may be unwittingly sharing their flight with some unusual items. Usually, the only people who know are the flight deck (pilots) and the manager/senior crew member. Dead bodies, organs, blood are obvious ones, but we also carry everything right up to Formula One car parts, exotic animals, marble tables, oversized televisions everything. HUM is the code for human remains and the cargo most aircrew dread, said user Rosiulia who worked in the booking department of a long-haul airline.
media_cameraDont think it doesnt happen. While there is need for speed when transporting these shipments, the same urgency is not always met when the cargo arrives on the ground. When we have these kind of shipments we need to contact the family to make them aware when the plane lands and when to come to pick up the body, explained Rosiulia. And guess what. The body arrived in Shanghai in time, and no one picked it up for days. Legion3382 has the grimmest of news. Im not a flight attendant but I work the ramp, they said. We do send full bodies on planes a lot. Some in caskets some not. Twice in the seven years Ive been doing this has fluid leaked out of the boxes the bodies are in and got all over the luggage. HORRIBLE LITTLE GOBLINS (YES, US) Sadly for hosties, it their living passengers give them the most grief. The items left behind are perhaps the most unpleasant things kept secret from passengers. People are generally disgusting on planes, acknowledged ex-attendant Boopboopster. People frequently do disgusting things on their tray tables (Ive seen people change diapers, clip toenails and wipe boogers to name a few). However, these discoveries pale in comparison to human faeces under a seat. Nodealreddit chipped in, having dated a flight attendant. One common story was about the Delta miracles. Passengers in wheelchairs would board the plane before everyone else, but they had to wait for everyone else to disembark before they could get rolled out. It is apparently common for people to be healed during mid-flight and no longer need assistance when they reach their destination.
media_cameraIts a tough job. Picture: iStock THANK GOODNESS FOR AUTOPILOT? Giftofnarwhals had this genuinely terrifying tale. I used to work with elderly people, and one of my clients was a former pilot that finally quit when he realised in the middle of a flight his dementia had progressed, and he couldnt remember where he was supposed to be flying to. Meaning he had been flying for a commercial airline with dementia for quite some time before that. A FINAL NOTE Lets hand the final word to Seeyou_never. It is NOT the responsibility of a flight attendant to lift your bag, they said. There are multiple injuries caused from flight attendants lifting heavy bags to be friendly, and then theyre out of the job for months to a year (on average). If you pack it, you lift it. If its too heavy for you, its too heavy for us. On your next flight, spare a thought for your crew and try to chill out on your next adventure. And cross your fingers for a mentally sound pilot and no corpse juice. What are the odds, right? San Francisco International Airport purchases six new electric buses
Today Proterra announced that San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has purchased six 40′ Proterra Catalyst E2 electric buses and three 60 kW Proterra plug-in chargers, joining a growing list of airports across North America transitioning to electric buses for airport ground transportation. The new battery-electric bus fleet will reduce Bay Area emissions and support SFO’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2021 while cutting its bus operating costs.
As one of the fastest-growing airports in the U.S., SFO has ambitious plans in place to reduce its carbon footprint. SFO’s Five-Year Strategic Plan sets goals of carbon neutrality across airport-controlled operations by 2021 and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent from a 1990 baseline. Part of that plan includes the creation of a Clean Vehicle Policy to promote the adoption and deployment of low emission vehicles by both airport departments and ground transportation providers. The new battery-electric Proterra Catalyst buses will replace six diesel buses in its current operating fleet and will eliminate more than 23 million pounds of greenhouse gas tailpipe emissions over the 12-year life of the vehicles. SFO expects to purchase additional battery-electric buses to replace its CNG vehicles, for a greener, more modern fleet.
“Earth Day serves as a call to action; an opportunity for us to reaffirm our commitment to the environment,” said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “SFO is an airport industry leader in sustainability, and we have set big goals to achieve zero net energy use, zero waste, and carbon neutrality. By deploying San Francisco’s first public battery-electric buses, we’re on the path to zero emissions in our ground transportation services, leading the way in our quest to be the world’s most sustainable airport.”
The new electric buses will integrate batteries that are designed and manufactured down the street from the airport at Proterra’s Silicon Valley headquarters in Burlingame, California. With 440 kWh of battery capacity on board, the buses will be part of SFO’s fleet that currently provides buses to shuttle passengers between the terminals, long-term parking garages and other airport locations along daily routes.
SFO joins other California airports that are leading the electrification trend across ground transportation fleets, including Sacramento International Airport (SMF) and Silicon Valley’s Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport (SJC). Beyond California, five additional airports across the country have chosen Proterra electric vehicles for their ground transportation needs, including Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), Honolulu International Airport (HNL), John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and LaGuardia Airport (LGA).
“San Francisco International Airport has long been a leader in sustainability and joins other forward-thinking airports around the country in transitioning ground fleets to 100 percent battery-electric buses,” said Proterra CEO Ryan Popple. “We are proud to help one of our local airports offer superior service and meet its sustainability goals while also providing reduced vehicle maintenance costs and lower total cost of ownership.”

A Vinicultural Retreat: Reviewing Las Alcobas in Napa Valley, California
Courtesy of The Points Guy by Zach Griff
On the heels of Marriott’s introduction of (the dreaded) Category 8 award tier, TPG wanted to review some of the most aspirational properties in the Marriott Bonvoy program. Having recently reviewed the Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park and the Scrub Island Resort, Spa and Marina, next up was Las Alcobas — a Luxury Collection Hotel that has been on our radar for a while.
Would the hotel’s rooms, facilities, and service make the property worth 85,000 points or $800+ per night? Well, as I found out, there wasn’t a simple answer to that question.
In This Post
Booking
Because I was traveling on a quiet weekend, room rates at Las Alcobas were a bit lower than normal, hovering around $725 per night. We booked right before the introduction of Category 8, so we only paid 60,000 points per night — worth roughly $480 according to TPG‘s April valuations. To sweeten the already fantastic deal, as a Marriott Ambassador Elite member, I was eligible for a space-available upgrade (up to a suite), free breakfast, and guaranteed 4pm late checkout.
With Las Alcobas having moved into Category 8, it now requires 85,000 points per night for a free night. When Marriott launches peak and off-peak pricing later in 2019, the nightly points rate will jump to 100,000 points in peak season and drop to 70,000 points during off-peak times.
We still don’t know which dates will qualify for peak and off-peak rates, but I’d venture to guess that there will be lots of peak dates, particularly over busy weekends. So if you’re thinking of booking a trip to Napa during a busy time period (holiday season, spring break, summer long weekends), it would be best to book now before rates jump by 15,000 points per night.
If you were considering paying cash for a stay at this property, you could replicate the same perks as top-tier Marriott status by booking through the American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts program, which you can access through The Platinum Card® from American Express. Plus, you’d also receive a $100 spa credit to be used during the stay.
Location
Las Alcobas is located in St. Helena in California’s Napa Valley. The resort is about a 40-minute drive from Sonoma County Airport (STS) and an hour and a half from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) without traffic. Since traffic across the Bay Bridge is an almost 24/7 reality, I’d recommend budgeting closer to 2-2.5 hours for the drive from SFO. Sonoma County has daily commercial flights on Alaska, American, Allegiant, and United from various cities on the West Coast, but SFO is the arrival airport of choice from points outside the West Coast.
There isn’t much public transportation in the area, so taking a ride share or renting a car are the only viable options for getting to the resort. Just make sure to leave the keys to the rental at the hotel while you’re out enjoying a wine tasting.
I arrived into STS airport from LAX and ordered a Lyft for the 40-minute drive to Las Alcobas. I chose Lyft because Uber only offers its pricey Black cars in Sonoma County, which meant that by using Lyft I saved $80 ($45 for Lyft vs. $125 for Uber).
The hotel is located on Main Street in St. Helena, a 15-minute walk from the center of town. You don’t have to go far for the wine, however, as the hotel neighbors the Beringer Winery and actually overlooks a portion of the Beringer vineyards.
Check-in
Upon arriving at the hotel, I was greeted by a friendly bellman who introduced me to a front-desk associate, who was already standing outside waiting to welcome me to the property. The associate asked for my credit card, confirmed my stay details, and escorted me to the room for an in-room check-in. He welcomed me to my upgraded top floor room overlooking the Beringer vineyards and explained many of the room’s features.
After the brief orientation, he opened the mini bar and offered me a half bottle of sparkling wine as the welcome amenity. While I certainly could’ve used some cheese and crackers with the champagne (confession: I’m a lightweight ), overall, my check-in experience started to convince me that this property does deserve its place in Category 8.
Room
The room, and especially the incredible balcony and view, further validated Las Alcobas’ premier Category 8 rating.
The hotel has 68 guest rooms, and about 10 of those are junior and one-bedroom suites. The hotel’s rooms are located in four buildings; two buildings overlooking the vineyards separated by the hotel pool, one building overlooking the Beringer estate.
The fourth building, called the Acacia House, located by the entrance of the hotel, is a renovated rustic barn that houses the hotel’s restaurant and tiny reception area.
I was given a Vineyard View 2 queen guest room in one of the hotel’s two main buildings. For a hotel with 68 rooms, there are lots of rooms categories — 12 total!
The hotel assigns room categories based on which building you are in, as well as what level your room is on. Technically, I received a three-category upgrade from a Superior Guest Room, but the only real difference was that I had a better view on a higher floor.
The room was stunning, and the minimalist decor blended naturally with the outdoorsy feel of the hotel.
The beds were super comfortable and the linens were crisp and fresh.
There were two outlets and USB ports located behind the nightstand for easy charging of all of my devices.
The minibar was located in the corner of the room and featured a complimentary French press, along with bottled water that was restocked daily.
Near the entrance hallway was the closet and bathroom. The closet was large enough to fit all my hanging clothes, plus the two oversize plush bathrobes that were already hanging there.
The bathroom was split into two separate rooms, one with a toilet and sink and the other with a shower/tub combo and sink.
Since I was traveling with a friend, this set up proved to be ideal. He could shower, while I used the sink.
The toilet was a Japanese Toto electronic toilet that welcomed me to the bathroom by automatically opening the toilet seat — and then it automatically closed when I left.
The highlight of the room was the outdoor deck with fire pit overlooking the incredible view of the vineyards. The balcony proved to be the best place to relax and enjoy some wine.
The sofa and chairs were extremely inviting and comfortable, and the fire pit was heavenly on cool evenings. Fortunately, almost 95% of the rooms feature a fire pit, so you don’t need to rely on an upgrade to get one of them.
Food and Beverage
The hotel has one on-site restaurant called the Acacia House. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. On weekdays, breakfast is served from 7-10:30am; on the weekend, breakfast hours are extended to 2pm to accommodate late risers (read: hungover lightweights).
The restaurant decor matched that of the hotel and was quite fitting for a California farm-to-table restaurant.
Breakfast is served a la carte, and my Marriott Ambassador Elite membership granted my friend and me two continental breakfasts listed at $39 per person. In practice, we were able to apply the credit to any dish we ordered.
On the first morning, I ordered the omelette ($19), which was quite tasty. I then decided to order toast ($5) and breakfast potatoes ($9).
The following morning, I ordered the cured smoked salmon ($18), followed, once again, by the toast and potatoes … my favorite hangover remedy. I also ate dinner one evening at the Acacia House. The restaurant was crowded with non-hotel guests, but I didn’t have to wait too long for a table.
To start, I ordered an endive and apples salad ($15) and finished with the whole roasted acorn squash ($24). While the salad tasted fresh and light, the squash was completely overcooked and under seasoned.
My friend enjoyed his hamachi crudo ($21) and English pea soup ($13).
Outside the restaurant is a bar area with indoor and outdoor seating. While I didn’t spend time at the bar during my stay, I observed that many guests enjoyed a drink or two (or three) in the afternoons.
Overall, the food was above average, but it didn’t feel up to the promises of a Category 8 property. My recommendation is to use your breakfast credit at the hotel restaurant and go elsewhere for your other meals. After all, this is Napa and The French Laundry is only a 15-minute drive away.
Amenities
Las Alcobas definitely has enough five-star amenities to warrant its Category 8 rating. Even though the hotel was almost completely full during our stay (I overheard someone say that it was running at 95% occupancy), I never felt that it was too crowded.
While the grounds aren’t all that expansive, the hotel does have a few different areas for activities that helped spread out the crowds.
The main sitting/relaxing area was the hotel’s long rectangular pool located between two of the main buildings.
There were many yellow lounge chairs set up by the pool, which was heated to 84 degrees, but I forgot my bathing suit, so I stuck to relaxing beside the pool.
Next to the pool were a few outdoor couches and chairs set up around a large fire pit overlooking the vineyards.
Sitting out here was very relaxing, and my dermatologist father would definitely appreciate that the hotel offers free sunscreen at the pool. Surprisingly, there wasn’t any water available near the pool or outdoor couches, so come hydrated.
Back near the center of the resort was the hotel’s spa called Atrio. With 60-minute massages starting at $180 before tax and tip, I passed on a spa treatment.
I did check out the other spa facilities, which include a locker room, steam room, and relaxation area. It definitely would have been nice if the hotel also added a sauna or jacuzzi to the spa area (especially considering the low nighttime temperatures).
The relaxation room was nice, though the highlight was definitely the complimentary mixed nuts and dried fruits, hot beverages, and flavored waters.
The gym was located on the ground floor of one of the guest room buildings. It overlooks the Beringer estate and featured plenty of modern equipment that further helped me sweat out both my hangover and those potatoes I ate to combat that hangover.
In addition to the cardio and weight area, there was a yoga studio where the hotel offers complimentary yoga and TRX classes every morning.
The hotel set up some mountain bikes for rental outside of the gym, but I wasn’t sure where exactly they expected guests to ride, since the main road near the hotel was a two-lane highway.
Wi-Fi across the property was fast, free, and much needed. Cell phone reception (on Verizon and T-Mobile) was quite spotty across the property and the surrounding area, so my girlfriend back home appreciated my Wi-Fi connection almost as much as I did. Download speeds were around 50 mbps and upload speeds at 10 mbps.
Service
Although the service was promising when I checked in, it actually proved to be the most disappointing aspect of this stay.
We asked the hotel about local transportation options other than Uber/Lyft and were excited to hear that a house car was available to hotel guests. They informed us that we’d just need to call down a few minutes before to request the car. When we called to request the car, we were told that it had been pre-booked for the entire evening. Why advertise a service that isn’t actually available for use? And, if we needed to make reservations for the car, why not tell us?
Furthermore, I needed to wash clothes that I had used earlier in my trip. I brought my laundry bag to the reception area on Saturday morning and was told that the hotel outsources their laundry service and it had been already been picked up for the day. What five-star hotel doesn’t offer expedited and readily available laundry service?
Finally, the most egregious service failure occurred the morning we checked out. I called down to the front desk and asked to reconfirm our 4pm guaranteed late checkout thanks to my Ambassador Elite membership. The front-desk manager profusely apologized, but told me that Las Alcobas is considered a resort and therefore does not guarantee 4pm late checkout to elite members. I took out my phone, browsed Marriott’s resort listings, and noticed that Las Alcobas was not listed as a resort, and I’d therefore be guaranteed a 4pm late checkout. Armed with the new information, I called back down to the front desk manager, who told me that Marriott’s website was wrong, but he offered a 4pm checkout as a one-time courtesy. Then, at 3pm, a full hour before our checkout, housekeeping knocked and opened our door(!) asking us why we haven’t yet checked out. #Bonvoyed
Overall Impression
Does this property deserve its Category 8 placement? It’s not an easy answer.
Las Alcobas is certainly a gorgeous property in California’s Napa Valley. The hotel features a stunning design and blends perfectly into the nearby vineyards. The rooms, especially the balcony and firepits, could be featured on the cover of luxe travel magazines. However, what lay hidden beneath the glamorous façade were some serious service failures and miscommunications. If some of the service elements could be improved, then I’d definitely consider Las Alcobas worthy of inclusion among the 62 Category 8 hotels in Marriott’s Bonvoy program.
