Alex Seton (b1977) Australian
Someone died trying to have a life like mine (2013) Wombeyan marble, nylon webbing, dimensions variable
collection: Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide
designboom.com sydney based artist alex seton presents a monumental sculptural installation at the 2014 adelaide biennial ‘dark heart’, one which marries 21st-century ethics and ancient craftsmanship. he has carved 28 life jackets from white marble, composing ‘somebody died trying to have a life like mine’. the work stands in memorial of those that washed ashore the cocos islands in may of 2013, seeking safety from the perils of sea, persecution and rescue from torture of death. empty of the asylum seeker bodies that once inhabited them, ‘these jackets represent the lives of 28 unknown people who were simply looking for the chance to lead the lives that we enjoy everyday’, seton says. ‘the work asks, what is this darkness in our national character that means we do not readily extend good faith and protection to those who claim asylum?‘ seton’s work does not shy away from the tragedy of this event, nor does it force any particular experience on the viewer; rather it reminds us of the individual stories of those who undertook the fatal trip. the marble life vests, solemn and silent, are a testimonial to seton’s empathy for those trapped within a failing social system.
artsreview.com.au Alex Seton’s moving sculpture Someone died trying to have a life like mine has been acquired into the Gallery’s collection. Seton’s solemn marble re-enactment of an incident whereby the lifejackets of 28 asylum seekers were discovered washed-up on Cocos Island has been one of the most talked about works of art in this year’s Adelaide Biennial.
sullivanstrumpf.com Seton’s studio practice has investigated the relationship between the individual and society, with a particular interest in the power structures that determine our attitudes and behaviour and affect our choices. This can take the form of explicit political commentary, whether on Australia’s treatment of asylum seekers (in Refoulement, 2014, Someone Else’s Problem, 2015, and The Island, 2017), or on government surveillance and displays of overt power (Elegy on Resistance, 2012 and Panoply, 2007). But Seton often also examines our expectations about cultural forms and traditions such as memorialisation, to question how we determine what has value and deserves to be recollected and valorised. This enquiry has critiqued the form and processes of art and materiality itself (Roughing Out, 2013, Cargo, 2018 and Once There, 2019), but also includes reflections on the reliability of personal memory and its role in the construction of the self and identity (Meet me Under the Dome, 2020, A History of Forgetting, 2022 and Permanent Good Stream, Some Rocks, 2022).

Tom Babin of Shifter explores Calgary’s old sprawl neighborhoods and compares them to new, denser suburbs built in the far-south suburb of Seton, which is supposed to be where the southern terminal of the new Green Line LRT will be.
But is it still the same old car-dependent design we had 60 years ago?

god world war 529 on twitter. i think the thing that makes it weird is this:
1) going into her comment section. talk shit on them on twitter. even with the team admins, but don't @ the players. faith never talked shit and is in fact friends with the uconn players.
2) the big reason i find it distasteful is it feels like punching down. top 10 and one of the biggest dynasty teams with one of the biggest fanbases shitting on an unranked team is where it feels gross to me. it wasn't a close game and there''s no real history of rivalry with seton hall. they've only beat uconn once in their entire program history.
