Location Services
Grayson x Lyra
words: 734 words
warnings: n/a
A/N: my first ever one-shot/fic. sorry if it's a little short.
Dunkin Donuts was not an ideal meeting location for Grayson Hawthorne. He couldnât even recall the last time that heâd had a donut, much less one from a chain restaurant. However, long distance made him desperate and he would do anything short of murder to see his girlfriend while he was in her college town. So there he was, sitting in a Dunkin Donuts in jeans and a crew neckâalso out of character for himâwaiting for Lyra Kane to get out of class.
Relationships were weird for Grayson, and Lyra knew that. Theyâd talked about it an abundance of times. Especially when it came to the dreaded long-distance conversation. Obviously, there wasnât much that Lyra could do about it. She was, first-and-foremost, a college student. That has always been true. It just never felt real until The Game was over and she actually had to go back.Â
Winning the game was a big deal for her, as she was able to save her familyâs home and pay off her tuition debt. However, they didnât see eachother often. Over the summers she was working internships and he was working the foundation. She never came to Texas, because when she was free to go anywhere, she went home to her family. Not his family.
She graduated at the end of the semester and the thought of What happens after? was constantly running through Graysonâs head. What happens when sheâs truly free to go anywhere? What happens when she has a choice between going somewhere else and coming closer to himâcoming closer to home?Â
His stream of consciousness was interrupted when she walked in. She was radiant. Her tan skin practically glowed and she was dressed casually. She was smiling. After everything that had happened, it was amazing for Grayson to see her smile. He thought about how many times sheâd said the same about him.
âHey, Hawthorne,â Lyra said grinning as she set her backpack down in the chair across from him.
They went to the counter to order their drinks. As they talked about life, school, and the mundane parts of life, Lyra looked as if she was about to explode.
âDo you have something you want to tell me?â Grayson asked expectantly, once they were safely seated at the table with their drinks. He was silently wishing it was news that would, hopefully, segue naturally into a conversation about, for lack of a better term, living situations.
âDo you remember that internship I was working at last summer?â Lyra asked through a grin.
He did remember. Her local internship. Not in Texas.
âI do remember. The data analysis one, right?â
âYes! Well, guess what?â
âWhat?â
âThey offered me a permanent position. At a satellite branch. In Texas!â
Graysonâs mind blanked, the sentence âIn Texas!â the only thing in his head. He hadnât expected his wish to work.
âGrayson! Donât you know what this means?â
âHmm?â
âI can get an apartment with the salary theyâre paying me so I can be cloââ
âDo you want to move into my penthouse?â
Lyraâs eyes widened, and Grayson looked down as he realized that she hadnât even said whether she was in Austin, or Dallas, or San Antonio, or Houston. Or maybe, since it was a satellite branch, they were looking for smaller cities: San Marcos, Corpus Christi, Waco, New Braunfels. She might even be going to Nacogdoches. He sounded inconsiderate interrupting her when she couldâve been giving important context that saved him from embarrassment. Grayson wished that spoken word had an unsend button.
âIâd love to, Grayson.â
Grayson looked up at her, and in that moment he had never loved her more. Moments of their future flashed through his head. The two of them waking up together, making dinner, watching movies, and even seeing each other off to work. Her voice brought him back to the present.
âMy job is in the city and your penthouse is actually really close to the office. Itâd be nice to not have to commute. Even nicer if it means I get to be with you while I do it.â
âOkay,â he said softly. âIâll come up here to help pack your apartment and then move you down to Texas when your lease is up.â
She held her drink up in the air to mimic a champagne glass. âTo new beginnings?â
He smiled and picked up his cup.
âTo new beginnings.â

The Proper Posture of a Faggot: A Guide to Absolute Submission
By Sir Cedric Wycliffe Hawthorne
A true Alpha Master demands absolute perfection in discipline, posture, and conduct from those who exist solely to serve, obey, and please. A faggot, by its very nature, must embody total submission in both body and mind. The way it kneels, bows, or presents itself is a direct reflection of its understanding of its place in the hierarchy. Anything less than perfection is a failure of discipline.
1. The Foundation of Proper Posture: Total Submission
A faggot must always remember: it is nothing, it owns nothing, it exists for one purposeâservice. This must be evident in its very stance, whether standing, kneeling, or lying at its Masterâs feet.
â
Back Straight, Head Down â A faggot should never stand taller than its Master. Whether in a standing or kneeling position, its posture must be erect yet humbleâback straight to signal readiness, head down to acknowledge inferiority.
â
Hands Behind the Back or Resting on Thighs â A faggotâs hands should always be ready to serve. In a neutral stance, they are either clasped behind the back (in standing position) or resting open-palmed on the thighs (when kneeling). Fidgeting or improper hand placement signifies a lack of discipline.
â
Eyes Lowered, Never Meeting Its Masterâs Gaze Unless Instructed â A faggot does not have the privilege of eye contact unless explicitly granted. Its gaze should be fixed on the floor, the Masterâs feet, or its own hands in submission. Any direct eye contact without permission is an act of defiance.
2. The Three Essential Positions of a Faggot
A faggot must master three primary postures of submission:
đš The Kneeling Position (Standard) â The most common position, used when awaiting orders, being spoken to, or presenting itself.
âď¸ Knees spread apart, toes pointed back.
âď¸ Back straight, head down, hands resting on thighs.
âď¸ Silent and motionless, waiting for commands.
đš The Bowing Position (Prostrate) â A full display of submission, used when greeting a Master, expressing gratitude, or seeking mercy.
âď¸ Forehead pressed to the floor, arms extended forward or folded at the sides.
âď¸ Absolute stillness. No shifting, no movement until commanded.
âď¸ Breath controlled, slow, and steady, showing calm obedience.
đš The Presenting Position (All Fours or Spread) â When offering itself or awaiting inspection.
âď¸ Arms and legs positioned exactly as orderedâspread wide or tightly controlled.
âď¸ Spine kept straight to display physical discipline.
âď¸ Absolute focus on stillness, allowing Master to inspect, test, or correct posture.
3. The Psychological Aspect: Posture Reflects Mental State
A faggotâs body is an instrument of service, and the way it holds itself reveals its level of training, discipline, and obedience. Slouching, shifting, or trembling in position is unacceptable.
â
Every movement must be deliberate, controlled, and elegant. A well-trained faggot does not shuffle, twitch, or hesitateâit moves only when commanded, in precise, fluid motions that demonstrate its submission.
â
A faggotâs breath must be measured and silent. Hyperventilation, heavy breathing, or uncontrolled sighs are signs of weakness. The proper way to breathe in submission is deep, controlled, and slow, maintaining absolute composure and control.
â
Stillness is a virtue. A well-trained faggot knows that true submission is silence, stillness, and readiness. When kneeling, bowing, or waiting, it does not fidget, adjust, or moveâit remains perfectly motionless until ordered otherwise.
4. The Ultimate Test: Holding the Position Indefinitely
A faggot must be capable of holding its position for as long as necessary without complaint, fatigue, or distraction. Pain is irrelevant. Time does not matter. A well-trained faggot understands that discomfort is simply a test of its endurance.
âď¸ A faggot does not shift or adjust itself without permission.
âď¸ It does not whimper, complain, or express discomfort.
âď¸ It accepts correction with gratitude, seeking only to improve.
Final Words: The Perfection of Form is the Perfection of Obedience
The way a faggot holds itself is a direct reflection of its mental state, its level of training, and its understanding of its role. There is no room for imperfection. A properly trained faggot is a living display of submission, elegance, and controlâan object molded into perfection by its Masterâs will.
A faggotâs only thought should be: âHow can I serve better? How can I be more perfect for my Master?â If it maintains this mindset, it will instinctively hold itself with discipline, grace, and unwavering submission, proving itself worthy of its position.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~AVERY'S POV:
Enidburgh, 8 p.m.
I was used to Jameson Hawthorne dissapearing for hours and not returning home on time. That's what he's been doing ever since we started traveling together. But i have never been this worried, he would never even try to make me this worried for him. And yet here i was calling him for the 15th time, and he still wasn't answering.i have left him 20 massages, asking where he was, what was he doing, when would he be home...he didn't answer any of them.
Now, i wouldn't say i am a paranoid person. In fact, i'm a complete opposite, but Jameson Hawthorne would bring even a devil out of a person. We haven't even talked about what happened in Prague, he doesn't want to tell me, and i don't want to force him.
But this is different. I tried to remember everything that happened before he left.
...he didn't even kiss me before he left. He always does that, always kisses me on the lips. But this time he forgot...
And now he's gone for 8 hours. I don't want to panic, but all i can do is panic.
I even called officer Dezz, who, thanks to Jameson for ending up in jail quite a few times, i know great. He said he wasn't aware of anything.
I put my phone down on the table. Sit on the couch, and put my face in my hands.
Then suddenly i heard a knock on the door.
Jameson, i thought and rushed to the door to open
"Jame-" i stopped after i saw Oren's face.
"Avery, he still hasn't returned?" He asked. In the most emotionless way possible.
I shook my head as a sign og no.
"I could call his brothers or search-"
"No need for that, yet, Oren" i inturrupted him
Oren was quiet for a second.
"It's Jameson, he's probably out there messing with someone or betting his whole fortune on something" he said.
"I know, i know he loves taking risks...and that's what i'm afriad of" i said. "I just hope he is careful"
Oren left, gave me some privacy.
"What could he possibly be doing right now in Edinburgh?" I mumble to myself.
It was getting, i decided to go to bed, but i felt..incomplete, like i was lacking something..or someone, Jameson beside me.
Where are you mystery boy?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
JAMESON'S POV:
Edinburgh, 4 a.m.
Blood.
Shit.
There is blood everywhere, on my hands, on my, recently, broken nose, on my suit.
I've escaped papparazzis. escaping security guard to get into my apartment shouldn't be that hard either. I could easly just walked down and entered the hotel...but my apparence now, would cause a lot of questions? And answering questions, is the last thing i'm in the mood for.
I pulled out my, freshly broken, phone and dialed the main security service. Some phone near by was ringing.
Go on answer you wanker.
He turns back and enters the security office.
And this my chance.
I take my card out, and rush to the hotel door.
Everything hurts, jesus.
That damn neckless, i really hope it's worth it.
I really shouldn't have messed with the last guy.
I hold on to the door handle, and then all of a sudden i remember something, rather someone. Avery.
How could i forgot about her? The whole day...
I pull out my phone and check the contacts.
17 missed calls and 27 massages.
I felt a sudden guilt, and i was mad. Mad at myself for forgetting about her. I am such a fucking idiot. She must've been so worried, and i was there competing with those jerks.
I enter the room, light were turned off.
Avery must be sleeping.
i go into the kitchen and drink a glass of water.
And then i felt someone behind me, the lights switched on, i turned around and Avery was standing there. I could never exacly describe her face the moment she saw me.
Fear, worry, anger and joy.
All of the emotions at the same time.
I didn't say a single word, neither did she.
She just came closer to me and then suddenly her arms were around my neck, and my hand were on her back.
I kissed her forhead and she looked me in the eye.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
AVERY'S POV:
Edinburgh, 4:25 a.m.
His face was bruised, mostly his left eye, his nose was broken, his lips were swollen, and his kunckles were injured.
I was so mad at him. I was so realived that he was here, in front of me, that he didn't left me like my mom.
I looked at his hands. This needed to be treated immediatly.
"Heiress, i-"
"Shut up" i cut him off and rush him to the bathroom.
I found first aid, and first i tried cleaning the injury with water.
Fifteen minutes passed. His hands were bandaged. Now i needed to take care of his eye.
In the span of this 15 minutes, he hasn't said anything, he didn't even made a sound. He was wierdly silent for his own self.
I put ice on his eye, and i tired so hard to get rid of the worried face, but i couldn't.
"It's not that serious, it's just a cut" Jameson said.
I felt rush of anger growing inside me. I put the ice cube down.
"It's not that serious?" I said mockingly
"You come back home, bruised, injured, hurt, after almost a whole day, without answering my calls and returning my massages, and you're saying it's not that serious?" I say, with a hard strict tone.
"Heiress, i never meant to worry you, that's the last thing i want to do." He says, looking worried.
"You know what Jameson, you might be careless and negligent, but some people are not. I am not. I care about the people i love deeply, i always look out for them, and when they dissapear without contacting me the whole day, i do think is serious." I say, as much as i try to control myself, i can't.
"Are you impling that i don't care about the people i love?" He asked me. His green eyes staring into mine, oh, it was cruelty..to make me feel this type of way for him when i was mad at him.
"Coming from the way you behaved today, yeah, you do not care" i say.
Suddenly i feel everything stopping.
He looke..hurt.
For a few moments he is silent, looking up and down.
Then, he pulls out a neckless from his pocket.
It can't be...
Sun shaped emerald neckless.
"Do you remember this?" He asks me.
"That's...my mothers neckless.." i couldn't finish the sentence, i was confused and shocked.
"She gave this to you, on your 15th birthday, your last birthday with her, but you lost it, and you couldn't find it"
I didn't say anything, i just waited for him to continue.
"I read your diary, or your leather book..whatever you call it. But you must forgive me it was for a good reason...i..your birthday is coming up, actually it's next week, and i thought Jameson this girl is special, she deserves more than..hidden picnics..or races..or hot air ballons..you really do Avery, and i read the book beacuse you'd never tell me what you wanted, even if i said tahiti. I read all about this neckless and how special it was for you.."
For a moment he stopped and then continued
"I decided to get it for you, heiress, i looked for it, and just so you know it's not just some random neckless, it is one of the rarest, and it may have been stolen from you sometime you didn't realised..."
He stopped and asked me
"Why do you this i wanted to come here so badly in the first place? Because the neckless was here, kept in a museum, illegaly, and u tried so hard to get it back, sure i went through some..painful stuff and some assholes to get it, but i did it, and i would've done it billion times for you Avery. "
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
AVERY'S POV:
Edinburgh, 4:53
Guilt. Guilt. Guilt. Guilt.
My heart was pounding.
My eyes were watering.
He did this, all for me.
I hurt him.
I told him he was careless and negligent.
I told him he didn't care about others.
"...i wanted this to be your birthday surprise..but it oka-" he stopped talking and looked at me.
I was crying, hot tears were steaming down my cheeks.
Guilt. Guilt. Guilt.
He rushed to me and put my face in his hands.
"Hey, hey, hey..heiress look at me, it's me, your mystery boy, and everything is alright" he tried to calm me down.
He hugged me and whispered shhh, shhh, shhh
We were like this for a while.
I pulled away and he washed tears out of my face.
"I'm sorry" i whispered.
He kissed my forhead.
"I should be the one to say sorry for making you worry." He said.
"Jameson?"
"Yes heiress?"
"Can you help me clasp the neckless?"
He gave me his usual devilish grin that was worth to die for.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"What's this mom?" Asked a 15 years old girl..who has just turend 15.
"This is a special neckless, for a special girl, like you, Ave"
The girl smiled and laughed.
"Mom can you help me clasp it?"
"Of course i can my little girl.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jameson clasped the neckless, it was just as beautiful as the day i first wore it.
He came and hugged me from behined.
"You are the most beautiful human i've ever seen" he whispered in my ear.
I turned my head to him, he turned his to mine.
"I love you, Jameson Winchester Hawthorne"
"I love you too, Avery Kylie Grambs".
â˘ââ˘ââ˘ââ˘ââ˘ââ˘ââ˘ââ˘ââ˘ââ˘ââ˘ââ˘ââ˘ââ˘â

This Is The Road To Ruin Chapter 2
Harry Potter | 2022 | 3,862 | Ao3 | Prev | Masterlist | Next
  4/11/87
 I had a nightmare last night. It was another one about the stone room and the people in masks. I wish I knew what it meant. I wish I understood how my Sight works.
 I think the dream has to do with why Iâm here, in the muggle world, instead of home, but I still donât understand it. If I hadnât met Tansy, I think I would have assumed that my memories of home were imaginary - they fit into fiction ever so well. But Tansy is real, and she has magic, which means my childhood was too.
 I just wish I understood it. I wish I remembered what caused the change. Hopefully I will one day.
Hopefully it wasnât as bad as the nightmares make it seem.
â
 Clemencia is off at a placement, officially, but she came to Aletrisâ today Freaking Out. Itâs⌠a lot.
 Tansy, Hawthorne, Hana, and Clem all have magic. Iâve mentioned this before, because weâve had to grow around it. I remember growing up around magic, so I knew that we werenât⌠as isolated as it seems, I guess, but I didnât expect this to be our way in. Back.
Clemencia got accepted to a Magical Secondary School. Itâs called Hogwarts - they wonât tell us where it is, but the teacher who came to deliver her letter took her on a tour of what sounds like a magical mall. Sheâs going to take us there tomorrow; she chose to accept the acceptance/invite.
 Iâm going to talk to Mrs. Calmiris tonight. Apparently, school starts at eleven, and I remember her asking me about letters around my eleventh birthday. The next year I got Hawthorne. Sheâs always been very calm about our magic; if sheâs like me, or like Clem, I want to know. I know sheâs not like Tansy, though.
 Speaking of Tansy-
***
Justin hadnât meant to go school shopping during the apparent pre-school rush. Heâd been hoping to beat it, actually, but his summer had taken a sort of nosedive when he got his letter. Not intentionally! It had just been⌠derailed. Theyâd had everything scheduled already, from ordering his textbooks to his uniform fitting. All under the impression that Justin would be attending Eton, come fall.
 Which was not going to happen.
 Instead, a week before his birthday, theyâd had a guest over who informed him heâd have to spend the next seven years at a Magic School unless he wanted to become a human bomb.
 Which, obviously, he didnât.
 The professor has offered to escort them while shopping, but Justin had been having a slight breakdown at the time, so his mother had gotten directions and gently shooed the professor out. Which lead to now, three months later, exploring the Wizarding World by way of Diagon Alley, in London.Â
 Justin was sure it was going to be super cool, as soon as he could stop hating it for tearing apart his life. If heâd had more warning the change might not have been so jarring.
 He had hoped that coming to Diagon Alley would show him something cool, something to make it seem less horrid, but theyâd entered through a dingy tavern that gave his parents headaches, had to get help entering the alley and were given condescending looks when they asked, and the they were greeted with less of an alley and more of a mosh pit. A magical mosh pit. Lovely.
  Justin knew he was being unfair, but he didnât particularly care. He had to go to a school where heâd have none of his friends, because of something he had no control over. He was allowed to be bitter.
 Professor McGonagall had also failed to inform them that theyâd be using an entirely different currency; luckily Dad had noticed while they were in the tavern and before they were actually trying to buy something.
 That would be embarrassing. So very embarrassing.
 Of course, then they had to hope that the bank, once they found it, offered exchange services. Thankfully, the bank was huge, visible when they entered the Alley (through a brick wall that vanished when it was tapped, which was actually pretty cool, Justin had always wanted a secret room in his closet) and bright white, so it was easy to find. Getting to the bank was another matter, as the alley was crowded, with an air of anticipation, as though they were all waiting for something big to happen. It, alongside the constant thrum of noise, put Justin on edge.
 They tried, rather unsuccessfully, to make their way through the masses, until they noticed the crowd shying away from a pair of young adults - who were also heading towards the bank. Justin grabbed his momâs hand and followed them.
 The man called out once they had a direct line of sight, and got an enthusiastic wave back from someone much closer to the bank. The couple seemed to be hunting for friends or children in one of the few places that wasnât packed beyond belief.
 It wasnât until they reached the open space that he realized there were two yards of white marble steps, on which the rest of the coupleâs group seemed to be waiting. And they were the only ones - everyone else seemed to go up and down the steps as fast as they could, or stay off them altogether, as though unwilling to infringe upon bank territory.
 The Finch-Fletchleys watched as their unknowing guides met up with a group of younger teenagers and one he couldnât tell if was an adult or a child. The shortest oneâs features changed as he watched, and Justin felt a giddy bit of awe bubble in his chest before his parents herded him the rest of the way into the bank.
  Shapeshifting!
 The only superpower Justin had wished more for as a child was invisibility. If he could learn to do that, this whole charade would be worth it.
 The creatures that ran the bank were a little scary, less so inside than the guards outside were, but his dad treated them just like he would the bankers at home, and the conversion was quick and painless, minus the part where they had to calculate everything in seventeens and twenty-nines, instead of tens and hundreds.
 Still, it was easy to move on, until they realized they had no clue where to go for anything. Maybe they shouldâve tried to reschedule with Professor McGonagall, or at least asked for a map.
 So this wasnât their best planned trip. It was fine. His mother had immigrated (illegally, not that it was common knowledge) and had to learn Britain and London from the ground up; thus they could too. At least it didnât look like heâd have to learn a whole new language.
 âPerhaps the bookshop?â Justinâs dad offered hesitantly. Flourish and Blotts sounded like a stationery store, but the display was full of books, so thatâs where they went.
 Thankfully, the bookshop seemed to be more organized and less busy. It also smelled like books, which was a welcome change from the sunlight-and-burnt-sparkplugs of the rest of the alley.
 They split up, giving Dad the list to find the required books while Mum and Justin went on the hunt for anything that looked acclimation-y. Cookbooks, history, Mum even grabbed two fiction novels, and they continued on in that manner for a little while. Justin grabbed all three of the etiquette books he found and promptly plopped down to skim them.
 He didnât want to accidentally insult someoneâs family line, or ask them to marry him, or call them names. He refused to be engaged before he was sixteen, at the earliest.
 âMuggleborn?â
 Justin jumped, looking up. There was a translucent person looking over his shoulder. âUm. Yes?â
 âWell, Iâm glad to see you willing to learn. Have you tried Modesty and Magic, by Harold Sheppner yet?â
 Justin shook his head mutely. The⌠ghost? Astral projection? nodded. âYou should, if you get a chance. It was my grandsonâs final project for his History of Magic mastery, and while a lot of thatâs gone out of style, knowing it can earn you points with some of them prissy purebloods.â
 âYes, sir,â Justin said slowly, pretending he knew what half those words meant. He took note of the title, though, because it did sound useful. âWould I find that here?â
 âYeah, sonny,â the man grinned. âItâs got a gold spine, in the S section. Want me to show you?â
 âYes please.â Justin stood up, closing his current book around a finger. âWhatâs your name?â
 âGeronimo Harvester,â he said with sly grin. âHalfblood, if you were wondering.â
 Justin was not, but heâd take note of it anyway.
 Harvester turned out to be a great guide; Justinâs earlier guess was right, he was a ghost, and heâd been haunting Flourish and Blotts for around seventy years. He helped customers find their books when they werenât being rowdy, but he was a bit of an open secret in the shop.
 âNecromancy is one of those magics people ainât that fond of,â Harvester explained, pulling out a book on The Legality Of Tabooed Magics Throughout The 19th and 20th Centuries. âNot that Iâm too much necromanced, but we ghosts ainât supposed to be able to touch stuff. Canât say I remember the whole reason, but people who die steeped in Dark Magicks tend to have a stronger presence if we stick around. âs why they donât use the Death Penalty in the Magical World.â
 That was⌠slightly horrifying but good to know.
***
 Leonie had read through nearly an entire cookbook when she realized sheâd lost Justin. He hadnât wandered too far, and since the crowds outside had stayed outside, he was easy to find. Once she found him and they finalized their haul, they set out to find Caleb
 He was at the checkout desk, conveniently finishing at the same time. She leaned forward to kiss her husband and hand him their plethora of extra books.
 He hummed into it. âAll done?â
 âYeah,â she confirmed. âI do love these baskets.â They had to be enchanted somehow, with how many books she and Justin found, but once the books were inside it didnât seem like they weighed much more than a single textbook, which, while a lot, wasnât nearly as much as twenty should weigh. Her shoulders heartily appreciated the lack of strain.
 Caleb hummed in agreement, brushing noses, before turning to Justin. âFind anything cool?â
 âI found a book on something called blood magic, and the first three chapters look like an overview of various legal, illegal, and once-legal magics and why theyâre considered such. Itâs partnered with a book detailing the topic for the past two hundred years. It sounds interesting!â
 He sounded happy. Leonie smiled proudly at him, some of the guilt from this summer dissipating. She hadnât helped him accept his fate as a wizard, griping about how many things had to change, and how sheâd have to lie to her cousins, and every other thing she could, until their older son came and asked what theyâd done to convince Justin he was cursed and shouldâve drowned that time at Lake Windermere.
 It was a horrifying conversation.
 Sheâd been very careful to be as positive as she could be since, even though many of the obvious enchantments sent her head spinning and the people were rude and it had become very obvious humans were not the only human-adjacent species out there.
 That last one was not as much of a surprise, but she would admit sheâd mostly blocked out those memories as a childâs overactive imagination and underdeveloped brain.
 After the bookshop they went to clothes, which was⌠a thing. Leonieâs fashion sense consisted of âis the texture okayâ and âdoes my daughter laugh at meâ, so she was definitely no use there, but it looked halfway similar to their own with flowing regenmantels (robes, probably, but why fix what isnât broke) thrown over the top, or occasionally worn alone, as she would a dress.
 They also seemed to do a lot with embroidery and ârunic enchantmentsâ on the clothes themselves, something that she found thrilling. It made them shiny!
 Justin laughed at her, but it was fond and he was finally smiling, so she had no regrets.
 Of course, then they managed to get dragged down a branch off, first by stepping in as it was another of those places that most of the crowd avoided, and then further when Justin saw a shop called The Cloak and Decoy and practically dashed to it, expecting⌠well she wasnât sure, but he must have thought that it sounded very cool.
 Leonie felt her heart slow and then speed up again as they ventured deeper into the branch off. It felt distinctly similar to when they had to visit gang controlled areas. Still, they werenât attacked on their way in, just eyed like prey.
 They probably seemed like it, so obviously unsure. Except Justin, because he was eleven and finally enjoying magic and didnât have the experience Caleb and Leonie had to smell danger.
 That was why Leonie didnât pull him back, as much as she wanted to.Â
***
 Justin pushed open the door to the cloak shop and nearly stepped right back out. Unlike the one they found earlier, where they purchased only what was on the list because they werenât sure what else would be useful, this shopâs lighting was pale white, giving off a heady, psychedelic feeling of being in-between worlds.
 More odd and unsettling, though, was the sudden chill, the smell of frozen metal sharper than that of fresh snowfall.
  Despite that, Justin persevered.
 His parents followed him in, and he split off to look around. Despite the lighting being dim enough to give him a headache, it illuminated the cloaks rather well. And boy was he glad they hadnât gotten anything extra earlier. These cloaks were beautiful.
 Some of them were made out of materials he couldnât recognize, thick furs and silvery leather and some fabrics that looked like they were cut out of a star. Dual layers, single layers, reversible, one even could adjust the length, operating as a cloak, a caplet, or a scarf.
 This was so cool! How many times had Justin wished he didnât have to lug around a coat during winter events?
 âMom, come look at this!â
 She did. They were discussing it (and the concerning note that said it could be enchanted with a command word if someone needed to be âeliminatedâ) when the door opened again, a familiar gaggle making their way inside.
 âOh, itâs you!â
âAs close to in the flesh as I can be,â one of the young women said brightly. Somehow, her presence seemed to make the roomâs temperature fluctuate uncomfortably.
 Justin wondered if the theory behind keeping Cloak and Decoy so cold was that people would want to buy cloaks, even in the summer heat. If so, it was clever.
 "Yes well," the man behind the counter said, turning to duck into the back room. "I know your cloaks haven't worn out already, why the menagerie?"
 "But Gordan, we're not animals," said one of the teenagers, the one with blue tips, moving forward to drape herself dramatically over the counter. "We're flowers."
 "Of course," he called back indulgently. He was humoring them. "Why bring the greenhouse, then?"
 The older half of the group laughed.
 "Do you remember last year?â The blond young man asked, darkly amused.
 The proprietor reemerged, a mannequin and cloak floating behind him. âI suppose we donât want a repeat, no.â With a flick of his wrist, and likely the wand held loosely in his hand, the mannequin landed in the middle of an aisle and the cloak settled prettily on top of it.
 âAlright, Florine, have at it, I think Iâve figured out the enchantments,â said Gordan.
 Florine, (Justin assumed the name went to the one with the most rapport - ad who responded) hummed doubtfully, looking at the seemingly expensive fabric. âYou do know itâs going to be destroyed if youâre wrong, right?â
  Gordan shrugged. âAnd if Iâm right, it proves Iâm using the right materials.â
 âAlmost,â hummed the other woman, with dark skin, darker eyes, and a ponytail. âItâll only last one use.â
 Florineâs head snapped around so fast Justin thought heâd seen her neck vanish. âOh really?â The slow, creeping smile that accompanied the words was the most unsettling thing theyâd seen yet. Frankly, Justin didnât hate it.
 Magic came with monsters. The question was what kind of monsters they were.
 Florine stepped forward, leaning as though she was going to do a flip, and then there was no woman, only an oppressive cloud of smoke. It started from her feet and pulled the rest of her body into nothingness, and whipped out at the cloak so fast mum shrieked beside him. Thankfully, it seemed to be largely drowned out in the cheers of the other kids.
 A moment later, the smoke meandered back their way and turned back into a girl.
 The mannequin had been reduced to dust, but there were fabric scraps left.
 "Holy crap, it survived," muttered one of the younger girls.
 "That's impressive," said the boy, moving to inspect it.
 Justin stepped closer to the ruins, accidentally falling in line with the shapeshifter.
 "Won't stand up against a second go," said Florine from behind them. "But, congratulations, Gordan."
 There was a sigh. "You still obliterated the mannequin. That doesn't say good things about the wearerâs chances of survival."
 "You can figure out the design once you have a working ward,â said the smoke girl, unconcerned.
 âThat was awesome,â Justin said, crouching to look closer at the rubble. It felt like leaning into a commercial freezer, so cold it burned. He didnât touch. âDo they teach that at Hogwarts?â
 âNo,â said the boy beside him. âFlorineâs self taught.â
 âYou can do that?â If he could be self taught, maybe he could still go to secondary school with his friends.
 âItâs not advised,â said Blue Tips, dipping her fingers into the remains of the mannequin. She slid them lightly through the dust before yanking them back with a muttered swear. She pulled them up and made a face. âOuch. If youâre eligible, everyone wants you at an actual school.â She wiped her fingers off on her pants and then stuck them in her mouth.
 âOh.â Justinâs heart sank. âWhy?â
 âSomething about proper growth of a magical core. Florineâs exempt because hers is pretty damaged.â
 âOh.â Justin paused. He wondered what that meant, what a magical core even was, and if it was rude to call what must be a chronic illness or disability cool. âIâm sorry.â
 âThank you,â said the shapeshifter, standing from his crouch but still leaning down. âAnyway. Iâm Harry, nice to meet you.â
 âJustin,â he returned, taking the chimera handshake-hand-up. âYou too.â
 âJustin, weâre ready to go, honey!â
 He glanced at his mum, who had apparently decided to buy the size-changing cloak. Awesome. âComing!â He turned to Harry. âSee you around?â
 âFirst year starts on September first,â Harry returned with a grin and a peace sign.
 Justinâs smile widened. Maybe Hogwarts wouldnât be so bad.
***
 Caleb listened with a soft sense of foreboding as the man behind the counter of the Cloak and Decoy explained how the murder aspect of the cloak theyâd just bought their son worked. He chose the code phrase option, and had it âkeyedâ so it only activated if Justin himself said it. The last thing he wanted or needed was for Justin to accidentally strangle himself with magical tech they didnât think through.
 Caleb had considered asking Mr. Gordan to leave it off. But they didnât know what awaited their son in his new world, theyâd just seen a girl turn into some sort of shadow monster, and Caleb did not doubt in the slightest that Wizardsâ very wands were more dangerous than a loaded gun in the hands of someone with a grudge. He didnât think a switchblade would work in this instance, thus Justin got the assassin cloak.
 Heâd tell Justin about it when they got home. And inform him to never say âLoki would stab Merlin with excalibur for the fun of it.â
 He asked about the legality and how traceable it would be if the cloak did kill someone, and finally saw a glimmer of acceptance in those muddy eyes. Theyâd definitely walked into the magical version of the black market. Or mafia. Lovely.
 When theyâd finally ushered themselves out, Justin carrying the folded cloak while Caleb took the books and Leonie held the clothing bags, it was nearly noon.
 âWhat next?â Caleb asked.
 âDrop these in the car?â Justin offered. It was a good idea, they wouldnât be able to carry much more and anyway, lugging around this much shopping was already tiring. Caleb wondered how the wizarding folk stood it - did they levitate everything? Heâd certainly seen plenty of floating objects in the main alley.
 Leonie stopped at the edge, looking at the crowd that seemed to refuse to so much as brush the side alley they were in. She was still carrying their clothes purchases, in a little themed bag that didnât seem nearly big enough. Caleb hoped it wasnât this busy everyday - how many wixen could there be in Britain anyway?
 âAw,â said a voice that sent chills down Calebâs back. Heâd thought theyâd done well enough at acting as though they belonged to keep anyone unsavory away. He shifted closer to Justin. âIf you donât want to brave the crowd of big bad wizards you could come join us for a game.â
 âIâm afraid we donât have time, as much as we appreciate the invitation,â murmured his wonderful wife, turning as well.
 The old woman with galaxies behind her eye pouted. âIâm sure you could make time.â her other eye was scabbed shut, gray skin stretching over the socket in a hollow way.
 âEcho, donât be an ungracious host.â
 Caleb didnât jump at the extra voice, but it was a close thing. The smoke woman from the Cloak and Decoy walked up, unhurried, but the old woman backed away slightly. âWhatâs ungracious about inviting them to experience the magical world?â
 Smoke didnât say anything, just tilted her head slightly. Apparently, that was enough of a threat. âEchoâ backed away with a side comment about how theyâre welcome at any time, should they change their minds.
 âSorry about that,â the shadow witch said, turning a much kinder smile on them. âAre you okay?â
 Justin nodded, slipping between him and Leonie. âYeah, thanks. Iâm Justin Finch-Fletchley.â
 âFlorine Dupont,â she said, shaking the offered hand.
 Justin pulled his back a little fast, just enough for Caleb to worry. Still, he and Leonie introduced themselves as well. Caleb quickly learned why Justinâs handshake was too fast - her skin felt like frozen chicken on bare skin. The intrusive thought that flesh was technically raw meat was entirely unwelcome. Still, he smiled at her. âCaleb Finch-Fletchley, itâs nice to meet you.â

Neighborhood has exactly the right mix of small properties to open things in, medium properties to adaptively reuse for a decade then turn over, and big auto-service or for-construction-crews-to-pick-up-going-to-the-job retail (tile, carpet, plumbing fixtures, countertops, landscaping) that can turn over big intact plots for 4-over-1s, this area is really gonna be the future, won't stall out like the closer Eastside like Belmont and Hawthorne where you've got to go narrow plot-by-plot cause there's like one store in the middle with 4 apartments on the 2nd floor whose owner juuuust doesn't find selling out worth it vs. that rent
