Thank You, Perkins&Will BOS

Many thanks to Perkins&Will Boston, Ryan Bateman, Ana Soterio, and Sergio Riccardi for hosting us this week at the firm! I am grateful to represent the BAC as a student and to experience a week at the firm in various sectors. I had a great time with my group members and mentors. I appreciate how much programming there was for us during our time, and how friendly everyone in the office was. People came up to us to say hi and introduce themselves throughout the week, and they made time to get to know us. It was such an unforgettable experience, for which I must also thank Beth Lundell Garver and Maria Sardiñas from the BAC Practice Department.

"L'incanto di Orfeo" a Palazzo Medici Riccardi

Un evento che si configura come una esposizione di rara bellezza e profondità, che attraversa epoche e linguaggi artistici diversi per esplorare uno dei temi più evocativi e multiformi della mitologia classica, il mito di Orfeo ed Euridice.

La mostra, curata da Sergio Risaliti e Valentina Zucchi, rappresenta una testimonianza del modo in cui questo antico racconto continua a influenzare e ispirare l'arte dall'antichità ai giorni nostri.

Il mito di Orfeo, con la sua discesa negli inferi per tentare di riportare alla vita la sua amata Euridice, tocca temi universali quali l'amore, la perdita, la morte, e il potere della musica e dell'arte di trasmettere emozioni e messaggi profondi.

La scelta di opere che comprende dipinti, sculture, disegni, manoscritti, installazioni e film, offre ai visitatori un'occasione unica di avvicinarsi alla storia di Orfeo ed Euridice da molteplici prospettive, apprezzandone le diverse interpretazioni e rielaborazioni attraverso i secoli.

Il rilievo marmoreo neoattico mostra il momento drammatico del definitivo distacco tra Orfeo ed Euridice, un'immagine che ha toccato profondamente anche il poeta Rainer Maria Rilke,

il quale nei suoi ‘Sonetti a Orfeo’ esplora il dolore della perdita e la trasformazione del lutto in ispirazione artistica.

Oltre a Rilke, artisti del calibro di Tiziano, Parmigianino, Bruegel il Vecchio, e molti altri, hanno trovato nell'episodio di Orfeo una fonte inesauribile di ispirazione, interpretando e rinnovando il mito in chiave personale.

Attraverso questa mostra, il Museo Novecento di Firenze e MUS.E offrono al pubblico non solo l'opportunità di ammirare capolavori dell'arte legati al mito di Orfeo, ma anche di riflettere sul significato e sull'attualità di questi temi.

"L'incanto di Orfeo" diventa quindi uno spazio dove l'arte antica e contemporanea si fondono per rivelare quanto il mito continui a essere una fonte viva di ispirazione, capace di parlare al cuore e alla mente di ogni visitatore.

Questa mostra rappresenta una celebrazione della capacità dell'arte di attraversare i secoli, mantenendo vivo un dialogo con i grandi temi della condizione umana, tra cui l'amore che sfida la morte, la forza dell'arte come mezzo di espressione emotiva e spirituale, e la ricerca incessante dell'uomo per dare significato all'esistenza.

La Mostra nel palazzo Medici Riccardi di Firenze, con circa 60 opere d’arte esposte dedicate a una delle più importanti e immortali figure del mito classico, sarà visibile a partire dal 20 marzo e fino all'8 settembre 2024.

Medici: Masters of Florence

La serie Medici: Masters of Florence, dirigida por Sergio Mimica-Gezzan en 2016, nos habla de la influyente familia de Banqueros Medici, y el ascenso de los mismo, cuando tras la muerte de la cabeza de la familia, Giovanni De Medici, por envenenamiento, su hijo Cossimo De Medici pasa a ocupar su lugar. 

En los tres capítulos que se nos indicó analizar, podemos apreciar que a pesar de que Cossimo se vio obligado a renunciar a su afiliación por el arte y el deseo de convertirse en un artista, llegando incluso a conocer al famoso Donatello, este logro cumplir con su papel como mecenas de la época, de la mano de los abundantes recursos con los que contaba la familia, y contactos que también eran cercanos a estos. Su amor por la belleza aun no moría, por lo que se dispuso a terminar la cúpula de la Catedral de Florencia, y es donde podemos ver la aparición del conocido Flippo Brunelleschi en la serie para que le ayudase con el proyecto.

La serie nos muestra como el contexto sociopolítico, religioso, las guerras en italia y las disputas que tenían los Medici con otras familias nobles de Florencia como los Pazzi, fueron acontecimientos históricos necesarios para la toma de decisiones que, al final, ayudaron a terminar la cúpula de Santa María del Fiore. 

La serie en sí nos enseña como era el estilo de vida de la alta sociedad renacentista, desde el drama, el romance y las tradiciones, pero también dándonos un recorrido por otras famosas edificaciones como el Panteón de Agripa, el Palacio Medici Riccardi, entre otros, pero manteniendo a la Catedral como centro de disputas y conflictos por el capricho de Cossimo por continuarla en medio de la crisis financiera, el hambre, y la peste que azotó florencia. 

La arquitectura es un elemento central en la historia, y es el telón de fondo donde se desarrollan las intrigas, el poder y la riqueza que marcaron la vida de la Florencia del siglo XV. La serie y los Medici fueron una forma asertiva para mostrarnos cómo se relacionaba la belleza con el entorno, y del trabajo que suponía levantar un espacio como los que se mencionan si no se contaba con el apoyo de personajes como ellos.

Multifaceted Mentors

At Perkins & Will, Sydney, Jack, and I were lucky enough to have three mentors. Ana Soterio, Sergio Riccardi, and Ryan Bateman are all BAC graduates representing different architectural experiences. We got to spend time with them individually and in a group, learning about their roles in the office.

Sergio, for example, works in healthcare architecture but maintains Perkins & Will's fabrication spaces and innovative technology. Ana began working in healthcare architecture in Brazil and has continued doing so since moving to the U.S. Ryan explained how he initially was working in the sports design department and transitioned to K-12, which he is now most passionate about.

As designers at the firm, they have a special set of skills that represents the application of their academic-based skills with real-world experience. They were open to answering every question we had about the BAC, Perkins & Will, and the profession of architecture in general. They were able to give us honest and constructive feedback during our resume/portfolio review session and made sure we felt confident about how to move forward after leaving.

As mentees, we approach them with questions, problems, and curiosity. They as mentors can respond to us with advanced knowledge, refined advice, and openness to receive our questions.

Workplace Acclimation

Perkins & Will's Boston office's culture reinforces its individuals' interconnectedness.

Our first hour was the "Monday morning meeting," which included a project debrief by Rania and 3 heartfelt goodbyes to employees going through life/career transitions. The huddle was warm and welcoming, and Jack, Sydney, and I were enthusiastically introduced.

Corrie gave us an office tour, and then we jumped in on a run-through of an interview pitch for a higher ed project. It was our first-hand take on seeing the professionals revise how they deliver concepts and emphasize the client's vision–in real-time.

I appreciate the nature of support one can give another with the open desk layouts and transparent buffers between main and breakout spaces. I was surprised by the strong web of BAC alums at Perkins & Will, but it made our day uniquely social and candid.

Kind Mentors

We had the privilege of collaborating with two outstanding mentors during our practice connex - Sergio Riccardi and Ryan Bateman. Although each mentor had a unique approach, both were incredibly resourceful, caring, and insightful throughout our collaboration. They took the initiative to give us a tour of the Perkins + Will office, familiarize us with its culture and resources, and generously shared their knowledge and experience. This valuable input will undoubtedly benefit us during my time at the BAC and throughout our design journey.

I want to thank Sergio and Ryan for their dedication and patience they invested in us during our externship. Their personalized approach to our discussions enhanced the overall experience, making it more comfortable and meaningful. Witnessing the care and commitment they exhibit in their ongoing projects serves as a true inspiration. I am confident that not only will I gain valuable experience at Perkins + Will through this externship.

We were fortunate enough to work with two exceptional mentors during our practice connex - Sergio Riccardi and Ryan Bateman. Both mentors had different approaches but were equally resourceful, caring, and insightful during our time together. They took the time to show us around the Perkins + Will office, familiarize us with its culture and resources, and share their knowledge and experience, which will undoubtedly prove useful in our time at the BAC and our design journey.

I appreciate the dedication and patience they invested in us during our time together. Their personal approach to our conversations made the experience more comfortable and meaningful. The care and commitment they demonstrate in their current projects are truly inspiring. I am confident that I will not only leave the externship with a great experience at Perkins + Will but also with lasting connections with our mentors.
