Raven - Vivid Shadows 2024
Tumblr media
"The Odo Sedoh dreamed, and in his dreams, he was legion. He was black-winged murder flying over a vast sea. He was the bloodthirsty havoc of beak and talon. He was the stately flock that wheeled over a city stained by injustice. He became the shout of a thousand prayers on a thousand lips. He became a prophecy of revenge. He became the blossoming shadow that engulfed a sun. He was Crow who then became the slaughter"

there is just something about a character who is born and forged into a weapon or a god, and they will fulfill their destiny because that is what is expected of them, but deep down they just want to be seen as human, a person, as someone’s son or daughter. they crave connection, and somewhere to belong, a home for themselves.
(this is about Serapio from Black Sun specifically but it fits so many characters)

If I had a nickle for every one of my favorite characters who, after almost dying to the point where their friends and family are convinced they're dead, they went to live as hermits for several years in a remote area because they didn't know how to reconnect with the people they love...I'd have 2 nickles...which isn't a lot...but it's weird that it happened twice.

Observations on Crows
8 of the chapter epigraphs in Black Sun are said to be "From Observations on Crows, by Saaya, age thirteen," Saaya, of course, being Serapio's mother. I'm working on cataloguing all the epigraphs of the series, so as a sneak peak, I've included below the cut all the Observations on Crows that we see, in order of appearance. Only 2 of the 8 precede non-Serapio POV's (I've noted these below), and the Serapio POV chapters they precede are both past and present.
I find them all immensely interesting to read after having gained the context of Mirrored Heavens. My favourite thing about them is the way that they are ostensibly about crows as animals, they can also be clearly read as being observations of the crow clan, or even people in general, and do seem to reflect the worldview that we learn more about Saaya having, although these quotations show her prior to the Night of Knives, while Balam's memories are all from after that point. I wonder if Saaya always saw herself in the crows, or rather modeled herself after her observations of them following the Night of Knives.
"The crows that flock around the Great House have a sense of cooperation and fair play. I have noticed that they will work together both with their own and even with a creature unlike themselves to achieve an end. But beware, the crow is also a trickster and will take the greater share of the reward, too, if he thinks he is able." (chapter 7)
"It is said that crows can remember the faces of men who hurt them and do not forgive. They will carry a grudge against their tormentor until their deaths and pass on their resentment to their children. It is how they survive." (chapter 8)
"Crows are highly sociable creatures. They form family units with mothers and fathers and even siblings. I have seen the solitary crow, but even they might gather with another to look for food or ward off a predator. I once saw a crow befriend a kitten and protect it with its own life." (chapter 12)
"My uncle allowed me to accompany him to the aviary today. It was a rare treat since only the riders are usually allowed, but his mount Paida has found a mate and would be leaving for their rookery soon. He told me crows mate for life, and I thought that impractical and said so. He laughed and explained that they are sexually promiscuous but loyal to their mates and that the two are different. I asked him if crows fell in love, and he assured me they did not." (chapter 17)
"There is a boy here, a son of one of the matron’s own Shields. I will not call him by name but know that he is mean and bullies the smaller children when no adults are there to see. Tana once told me he even bullied the crows. Today he fell from the cliffs and is dead. Mother told the boy’s parents that it was an accident, but Akel whispered to me that he saw the crows harry the boy off the ledge. I suspect it was no accident and nothing but the crow’s own justice." (chapter 21 - Xiala POV)
"I saw a terrible thing today. A dozen crows, small but fierce, attacked a much larger owl that had entered their territory. It was raiding their nests and had eaten a nestling. The crows attacked it with their beaks and claws, but the owl seemed to only see them as an annoyance. It even plucked one from the sky, breaking its neck before hurling it to the canyon floor below." (chapter 30)
"Today I observed a crow funeral. One fledgling had fallen from the nest and brained itself against the ground. Throughout the day all the crows of Odo came to visit the corpse, talking loudly among themselves and bearing witness to their fallen companion. I asked my uncle about it, and he said that the crows are only warning the others about a fatal danger so that they do not repeat and perish as well. But he did not hear the crows weep, as I did. He did not behold their terrible sorrow." (chapter 42 - Okoa POV)

Serapio. Serapio!! To be nothing but a vessel for a god, to never have a childhood or a life or any sense of individuality, to only have one goal in mind, and yet, his own personality carves it’s way through, and he still manages to being loving and gentle, but cruel and violent when necessary. I’m not finished with the first book yet, but the way he confidently makes his way to his destiny, without knowing what will happen to him, but having full faith the whole way??? He’s so interesting and well written and fuck I love this character.

Note
tell me about ur most pathetic wet piece of shit fave please!!
Oh perfect, it's time for me to spread book propoganda:
Imagine, if you will, a 6 foot something, imposing man, he has long black hair and crows answer his call. Peeking our from under his clothes you can see a pattern etched into his skin. He is the vessel of a god.
He is a mommas boy, he has no social skills (the crows that flock to him are his only friends and he loves them sososo much), he covers his scarred eyes with a cloth specifically because he doesn't want his injury to creep people out, he's so afraid and so kind and so gentle. He wants nothing more than for the girl he likes to tell him stories and teach him about the stars.
His name is Serapio I love him so much why does Rebecca Roanhorse's Between Earth and Sky series not have any fucking fandom oh god I'm suffering waiting for the last book 😭
