Your AirPods Will Die Soon by Tristar To
Last week, Apple released its AirPods 2 online in a subtle fashion. Like its predecessor, Airpods 2 did not receive too much press. I personally did not see any advertisements for it and many of my peers did not even know Airpods 2 released already. As we’ve discussed, Airpods gained its popularity through social media, where users would post reviews and videos about how much they love their new wireless headphones. I’ve heard many great things about these headphones, but have wondered about a certain thing: battery life.
I currently don’t use AirPods, but I have been an iPhone user since the iPhone 4. I didn’t own every generation of the iPhone, since I wanted to use the current phone that I had for as long as I can. I would remember that when I first get a new iPhone, the battery would have no problem lasting the entire day. But after a year, I would need to charge it after every hour. Then, in 2017 and 2018, Apple went under fire for releasing a software update that slows down old phones to counteract aging lithium-ion battery problems. It seemed like Apple was forcing people to upgrade their own phones, which isn’t too surprising. Ultimately, there isn’t a huge incentive for any company to make products that last for years.
This may be the same case for the AirPods. According to some Apple bloggers, “AirPods are starting to show their age for early adopters.” Earlier this month, Apple Insider tested a pair of AirPods purchased in 2016 against a pair from 2018, and found that the older pair died after two hours and 16 minutes. This is less than half the stated battery life for a new pair. Others, such as Desmond Hughes, report the AirPods lasting only half an hour. He frequently listens to one while charging the other — not very optimal conditions for expensive headphones. Even though everyone wishes that Apple would increase the battery life on the AirPods, Apple did not say whether the devices would have longer lives in their AirPods 2 release.
Despite the notorious depreciation on Apple technology, the lithium-ion batteries that power AirPods are everywhere. One industry report forecast that sales would grow to $109.72 billion by 2026 from $36.2 billion in 2018. Lithium batteries charge faster, last longer, and pack more power into a small space than other types of batteries do. However, they die faster too, often after just a few years, because every time you charge them, they degrade a little. They can also catch fire or explode if they become damaged, so technology companies make them difficult, if not impossible, for consumers to replace themselves.
Kyle Wiens, the founder of iFixit, an open-source DIY repair guide, believes companies should be designing devices that allow the batteries to be swapped out. Even though this means finding different battery technologies, other companies such as Samsung design their wireless headphones in a way that you can unscrew them to repair them. According to technology-research firms, lithium-ion batteries will continue to dominate technology for at least another 10 years. Advances in battery technology are notoriously slow, especially as devices, and the batteries inside them, become smaller. This means the world will continue to generate a lot of waste. Of the 3.4 million tons of electronic waste generated in America in 2012 — an 80% increase from 2000 — just 29% was recycled.
Can we blame companies? At the end of the day, they’re a business. They design for performance and sales, not life span. They make money when they sell more units, and they’re not financially responsible for disposing of products when consumers are finished using them. Plus, extending product life wasn’t consistent with growth on the financial side.
Apple officials declined to speak on the record for these issues. But in 2017, the company announced that it was working toward a closed-loop supply chain, in which 100% of its materials will be recycled or renewed. Indeed, Apple also encourages consumers to trade in their devices to be recycled, for a small credit. For example, someone trading in an iPhone 6s could get $100 off the $999 price of the new iPhone XS. Overall, even though Apple didn’t specify whether the battery would last more than two years in their AirPods 2 release, most people won’t really care. Convenience is a huge factor, and the sleek design and connectivity makes it a must have for a many consumers. Many people will probably lose them before the batteries run out anyways.

Shot on iPhone
It has been quite a while since my last ‘proper’ post on this site. Over two years, in fact. That post, Dancing in Kensington, was itself published a year after the pictures within it were taken, and depressingly represented one of my most recently edited set of photographs (the only exception being my images from RTX London in 2017, which were rushed out to capitalise on interest in the wake of the event itself, showing that when I set my mind to it I can actually shoot, edit and post relatively quickly).
That lack of editing has led to a decent-sized backlog of images, even though over time the use of my DSLR has waned (an inevitable consequence, perhaps, of getting out of the habit of editing and posting – as much as I enjoy actually firing the shutter, the real reward is in the results). Although I’m still working full-time from home during the coronavirus pandemic, thanks to my newfound lack of commute I have a decent amount of additional free time which I’m using to go through that backlog, but it is going to take some time. I’ve basically gone all the way back to July 2017, where my earliest batch of unedited photos seems to be, and I’m working my way forwards from there. For the first time, I’m working on multiple posts concurrently. Instead of edit, write, publish, edit, write, publish, I’m editing multiple assortments of pictures, working through all of them chronologically, pausing only to export logical batches and upload them, then when the mood strikes I’m writing whichever of those posts takes my fancy. Whilst this is not going quite as expediently as I had originally hoped when lockdown started, my plan is still to get back into a regular posting schedule – but don’t be surprised for them to come out in a bit of a sporadic order.
It would be entirely wrong, however, to suggest that my decrease in use of my DSLR and the increased neglect of this site in some way represents a wane in my love for photography. If you follow me on Instagram you’d have seen I have still been shooting and posting images relatively regularly, only with my phone – so it makes perfect sense to me that this site should come back to life with a post representing the main kind of inspiring photography I’ve been doing over the last few ‘wilderness’ years.
Modern-day smartphones are amazing devices, and the cameras on them are often positioned as key selling points. And rightly so – my phone is always on me, I can quickly and easily snap and edit pictures using a variety of apps (including lightweight portable versions of Photoshop and Lightroom) and post them directly online without any faffing around with SD cards or ‘real’ computers, or even needing to return home. It certainly helps that smartphone cameras these days can produce incredible results, and the faux depth-of-field technology often produces results that are indistinguishable from the real thing – unless you look really close. Even on the occasions I’ve been out with my DSLR, I’ve often gone straight to my phone to take photographs because it so much more convenient – especially the the sorts of stylistic image that would require a change of kit, which can achieve similar results with an app.
Since the dawn of the smartphone era I’ve been using an iPhone. These days I tend to upgrade every year, and the cameras are a huge part of the reason for that. Currently I’m shooting with an iPhone 11 Pro, although the images in this post will have been shot with a variety of devices. Although the cameras in the phones has varied over the years, they are fixed cameras, so the focal length and aperture information doesn’t really change from image to image. As such, I’m doing the EXIF data under each image a little differently for this post: I’m listing the phone I used and which lens (as each phone has multiple), the shutter speed and ISO setting (since these vary a lot), what mode if any the camera was using, and what software I used to edit the image. If there’s no mode or software listed, it means I was using the stock modes and photo editor – or I forgot what I used and couldn’t figure it out from the image data. I will go into the modes in more depth later in this post.
I want to stress, every photo was both shot and edited entirely on an iPhone, either in the stock camera and photo editor or using third party software. Most of these images have been through a desktop computer and Lightroom only to be resized and watermarked and then uploaded, and quite frankly that’s only because I hadn’t bothered to do enough research into it before I started – I’ve since figured it out and now have an Apple Shortcut that will resize and watermark my images, so the last images at the end of this post have not even been through a ‘real’ computer. In keeping with that spirit I’ve even used an iPhone app – Metapho – to look up the EXIF information for each image, and all of this post was written on an iPad.
The images in this post all generally come from one of three devices: the iPhone X, the iPhone XS, and the iPhone 11 Pro.
iPhone X
Most of the images in this post start from only a couple of years ago, with the release of the iPhone X. This was the first iPhone that came in what I’d consider a reasonably pocketable size with a dual camera system on the back (previously this had been limited to the larger size ‘Plus’ phones, which are too large to be practical for me). The dual camera system features a wide angle lens (roughly equivalent to a 28mm lens on a 35mm camera) and a telephoto lens (equivalent to a 52mm), and brought several advantages: first, the wider angle of the two has optical image stabilisation, aiding sharper shots in lower light (considering how often I’m photographing scenes inside, especially cats being cats). It also enabled Portrait Mode, which as I’ll go to more detail in a moment, enabled a faux depth-of-field effect which adds a certain something to images to enable them to stand out.
iPhone XS
At some point in late 2018 (admittedly probably pretty close to when it came out), I upgraded my iPhone X for an iPhone XS, primarily for the camera upgrade it offered. As is often the way, just when I start to notice and hate something about my phone, Apple come along and highlight how the new one doesn’t do that any more, and such was the case here, with the camera specifically touting improvements in harsh lighting conditions just when I’d had a few images suffer from blown out highlights. The fundamentals of the camera were largely unchanged, still with a dual camera system featuring wide angle and telephoto lenses.
iPhone 11 Pro
The iPhone 11 Pro added a third camera to the mix, bringing an ultra wide angle with an equivalent focal length of 13mm. Not only has this brought the ability to take wider angle shots generally, it also adds the ability to use portrait mode with the standard wide angle lens. On top of this there were general improvements to the other cameras, such as wider apertures and improved HDR and image processing thanks to the phone’s improved processor (which makes a difference on a phone that does a lot of image processing) and the addition of Night Mode (not that there’s any night shots in this post, sadly).
Let’s kick things off with an image of one of my colleagues, on a snowy day in London when we had the misfortune of needing to move between buildings.
iPhone X telephoto lens, 1/160sec, ISO 16, using Portrait Mode
And of course, inevitably to test it out I would use a camera to take a photo of my cat.
iPhone X telephoto lens, 1/160sec, ISO 160, using Portrait Mode
This shot is an example of one shot using Portrait Mode, so the blurred background in this image is computationally generated. It shoots the actual image with the telephoto camera, and uses the stereoscopic effect of comparing the images from the two lenses to figure out what is the foreground, and how to realistically blur the background artificially.
I find one of the main tells when comparing photographs taken with a ‘real’ camera to one taken with a smartphone is the depth of field in the image. As a result of sheer physics, due to the thinness of your modern smartphone, you do not get the usual bokeh effect you’d see with a traditional camera. As a result, smartphone images have often looked ‘flat’ in comparison. The Portrait Mode effect – because it doesn’t just uniformly blur the background but aims to create a true bokeh effect by blurring more distant objects more than those closer to the foreground – solves this problem and helps create images that are closer to images taken with a ‘proper’ camera.
It isn’t perfect, of course, but as you can see with the image of Freddie above, who as a walking ball of fluff presents about as much of a challenge as the system is likely to face (as well as people with loose stands of hair of course), it works pretty well.
The added bonus of this system is that, as by and large it is software-based, it can be improved over time by system updates.
This next image is one which I took with my phone whilst shooting a set with my DSLR. That set will be along in the future, so you’ll be able to compare a shot taken with a phone to what I was achieving with full-size camera. This is a chocolate skull made to celebrate the day of the dead.
iPhone X telephoto lens, 1/70sec, ISO 640, using Portrait Mode
Of course, one of the main uses of my phone is to grab those shots when a cat is being cute, and getting up to fetch my big camera would only disturb them.
iPhone X telephoto lens, 1/25sec, ISO 125, using Portrait Mode
The front camera on the iPhone X, despite technically being a single camera, is also capable of portrait mode effects, because the camera array is basically a miniaturised Xbox Kinect capable of sensing depth using an infrared dot projector and IR camera.
Also built into the iPhone operating system is a number of portrait effects, which don’t really work in standard images, but works great for images featuring people. These can boost facial features, or in the more striking modes, remove backgrounds all together in order to create the illusion of being in a studio. I love playing about with it, but as you’d expect, I’m the main person I get to practise on. The shot below was taken outside on a picnic table, but the only clue to that is the reflection in my sunglasses.
iPhone X front camera, 1/120sec, ISO 32, using Portrait Mode
Portrait Mode doesn’t just work on people and pets – it also does surprisingly well on abstract objects, such as the back of my car covered in drizzle.

There are various methods and practises I use to edit photographs on my phone, which have varied over the years as software has been updated, released or even discontinued. For the earliest of the images in this post, I would most often take the images straight from the camera and put them into the mobile version of Lightroom, in order to add some sharpening, some vignette, and perhaps some particular filters, such as in this image.
iPhone XS telephoto lens, 1/25sec, ISO 640, using Portrait Mode
I would also use the same technique when looking to make images monochrome.
iPhone XS telephoto lens, 1/25sec, ISO 640, using Portrait Mode
I’ve obviously shared a few images of my own cats. After we moved at the start of last year we discovered a local cat apparently liked to spend time in our garden, made worse by the fact that our own cats were locked inside during their months-long ‘this is where you live now’ orientation lock-in, so all they could do was stare at him from the back doors.
iPhone XS telephoto lens, 1/120sec, ISO 100, using Portrait Mode
As is always the way, moving house was chaos. We moved the cats first, a day before the movers came to pack up all of our stuff in our old flat, in the hope of minimising the stress. They still had to put up with an hour drive in the car, which they hate at the best of times, but managed to avoid the movers for the most part. After the move was over, and the house was still full of boxes, the cats remained in hiding for the mst part. These shots I took of Freddie were among the first times they seemed to be truly settling in at their new home.

It may have been brought up before, but Freddie is absolutely my cat.

In recent years, my wife has taken up crocheting. One of her early projects was a little bunny for me to take to work, seen here in an image that helps show that portrait mode also works really nicely on objects as well as people (as long as you’re using a multi-camera iPhone – the single-camera iPhone XR still offered a portrait mode with the rear camera, but this was based on machine learning trained to look for people so didn’t work on objects or pets).
iPhone XS telephoto lens, 1/90sec, ISO 125, using Portrait Mode
It turns out, the iPhone XS is actually pretty good at all sorts of objects. This image is from a walk we took on Ditchling Down, another case of me grabbing a couple of iPhone shots whilst mainly shooting with my DSLR (so you’ll see the rest of this set further down the line).
iPhone XS telephoto lens, 1/1250sec, ISO 16, using Portrait Mode
I haven’t talked a huge amount about our house move on here, not least because this site is not intended as a blog on the minutiae of my life, but also of course because of the lack of posts I’ve been publishing due to 2019 being unreasonably harsh to me. I would no doubt have talked about it a little more if there were regular photo-based updates to be had. Luckily this post contains a little cross-section of my life over the last few years so you’ll get to hear about some of it, if you’re interested in that sort of thing. If you’re mainly in it for the photography then I presume you’re not reading this paragraph in the first place. One of the great benefits of our new home is we have our own garden, something which only Cookie has previously had. This has proven to be invaluable as Cookie can’t jump so good any more. We have a lovely set of french doors to get into our garden, so we can all walk outside easily (I’ll get to the view from the garden at some point later).
Such quick easy access to the outside – in our old flat we had access to a lawn, but it involved all of us climbing out of a window – means it’s been easier to get quick shots of the cats in the garden, like this shot of Freddie enjoying his first spring in the Sussex countryside.
iPhone XS telephoto lens, 1/120sec, ISO 25, using Portrait Mode
Another big difference with our new house compared to our old flat is the light. Our flat was often a dimly lit place, with the living room particularly dark of a day, even though it had a big window. By comparison, our new home is brilliantly bright and airy. Whilst this brings many benefits, of course the main one that matters is the ability to take better photos inside.
iPhone XS telephoto lens, 1/55sec, ISO 400, using Portrait Mode
It also helps that the default camera app obfuscates the ISO you’re shooting at, and takes over a lot of the post-processing you’d have to do with a photo shot at high ISO, such as noise reduction (although as you can see, 400 ISO is not bad at all for shooting inside). More recent software updates have also brought a feature called Deep Fusion, which is just the sort of computational photography that smartphones excel at compared to more ‘standard’ cameras. If the camera detects low light (but not so dark so as to require Night Mode), it will shoot and combine multiple exposures to extract as much detail as possible. Unfortunately this is something that only turns on automatically, and is not compatible with Portrait Mode, so you won’t see it used all that often.
Having our own garden space as also meant getting actual garden furniture to enjoy it, even though truth be told our cats probably use them more than we do.
iPhone XS telephoto lens, 1/120sec, ISO 16, using Portrait Mode
And there’s a water butt for cats to rest their butts (and also to collect rainwater).
iPhone XS telephoto lens, 1/120sec, ISO 50, using Portrait Mode
When there’s no cats being cute I’ll often use myself as a subject, especially when the light in the living room is just so. One downside of doing all my editing on a 5.7″ screen is it can be hard to judge details – on this image, for instance, on larger screens it appears to have been oversharpened.
iPhone XS telephoto lens, 1/120sec, ISO 64, using Portrait Mode
Fortunately, the cats are often cute. Here, Freddie was politely asking to go into the garden, by looking forlorn, like something out of a cat charity advert.
iPhone XS telephoto lens, 1/120sec, ISO 125, using Portrait Mode
And when he is outside, he does love the breeze in his most majestic fur.
iPhone XS telephoto lens, 1/120sec, ISO 25, using Portrait Mode
With my trust in the current capabilities of the iPhone, I have started using it where I would otherwise use my DSLR, such as at family barbecues, where – much like with photographing cats – sometimes you don’t want to risk disturbing your subject to grab your big camera.
iPhone XS telephoto lens, 1/120sec, ISO 16, using Portrait Mode
Last year – back in the carefree times when people who had never met before could stand within two metres of each other outside – we attended a car boot sale where I got a decent haul of 7″ singles that used to belong to a DJ. You can see that Portrait Mode can make even the most mundane shots look they were taken with dedicated equipment.
iPhone XS telephoto lens, 1/120sec, ISO 50, using Portrait Mode
Whilst the bulk of the images in this post so far have been taken with portrait mode to create the illusion of being shot with a real camera, you can still get great results when shooting normally, especially when there is detail to be found in the things you’re photographing. This incinerator chimney is in the grounds of the hospital near us (a hospital which can prove to be very useful in the event you, say, unexpectedly develop appendicitis, and don’t have anyone else who can drive so you need to walk there); we didn’t intend to get so close but we were wondering around amongst the trees in the grounds and suddenly it was there.
iPhone XS wide lens, 1/1900sec, ISO 25
There are also a few apps I use to shoot on my phone. For the most part I use the stock camera app, more often than not for the images in this post in Portrait Mode. I also have a few apps for fuller manual control of the camera, most commonly at the moment Halide, although I don’t tend to use these that often.
I also use Spectre, from the same people who make Halide, to shoot long exposures. It uses AI to help take 3-9 second exposures, correcting for an amount of camera shake (since you’re using a small handheld slab of glass, not a camera on a tripod). The results are often fantastic, making it one of the times where I’ll use the app for a long exposure rather than go through the faff of breaking out a tripod and potentially an ND filter to get a similar shot with my DSLR.
iPhone XS wide lens, 3sec, ISO 25, using Spectre and processed in Lightroom Mobile
Sometimes I use the various filters and styles in Lightroom more than others. In this picture of Freddie – where he sits proudly in front of a toy mouse he has vanquished – I have obviously gone for a more overt style.
iPhone XS telephoto lens, 1/60sec, ISO 400, using Portrait Mode
Similarly, I picked something similarly bold for this shot of Cookie on our garden wall.
iPhone XS telephoto lens, 1/120sec, ISO 20, using Portrait Mode
After we moved my commute changed significantly. One of the big changes – other than the duration – was my walk to the office in London, which now includes a ten minute stroll along the South Bank. This has presented quite a few opportunities to get great shots of the Thames in various states of weather, quite often using Spectre to get lovely long exposures of the water.

But look, ultimately, cats. They are a lot better these days at posing for me, presumably because they also like their new living environment.
iPhone XS telephoto lens, 1/60sec, ISO 160, using Portrait Mode
One thing I’ve also gotten better at is capturing fleeting moments, something that I’ve never been good at relying on smartphone cameras for, such as this big Freddie yawn.

Or Rambow in the living room in a shaft of sunlight.

Last autumn I again upgraded my iPhone, to an iPhone 11 Pro. This device adds a third back camera to the mix, an ultra wide angle with a 35mm equivalent focal length of 13mm, adding amongst other things the ability to use the stereoscopic portrait feature on the normal wide angle lens.
Wide-angle portrait mode works very nicely, even on objects in the low light of post-sunset.
iPhone 11 Pro wide lens, 1/30sec, ISO 1000, using Portrait Mode
Since it’s been quite some time since my last update regarding my hair (which I’m sure you care about even less than my housing situation), so it’s probably a good time to mention that, following shaving my head for charity, I decided I liked it and have kept it short ever since – just a forewarning before you see any pictures of me in this post and remember me with a very full head of hair, and a reassurance that I’m not ill.
More recently, recent updates to the iPhone operating system brought decent editing features, allowing me to adjust sharpness, definition, and vignette in the stock photos app.
With iOS 13, released last autumn, a new portrait style was released, called High Key Mono. This is another AI-driven style that creates the impression of a person being photographed in front of a white background, as if shot in a studio. The results are amazing and I can’t stop playing with it – obviously always practising on myself because I’m the most agreeable model I usually have access to.

I am genuinely in love with the results of this feature.

In the summer I decided to up my haircut by going for a full wet shave. The result was made even more striking when using High Key Mono.
iPhone 11 Pro front camera, 1/120sec, ISO 50, using Portrait Mode
As you may know from seeing any self-portrait posts I’ve made in the past, I tend to get a bit silly with expressions when taking a series of what the kids call selfies.
iPhone 11 Pro front camera, 1/120sec, ISO 50, using Portrait Mode
iPhone 11 Pro front camera, 1/120sec, ISO 64, using Portrait Mode
Around the same time I discovered VSCO, adding another step in my processing for when I want to add filters. This next shot is another of the same images, but I processed it using the Stage Light filter, which sort of does the opposite of High Key Mono by replacing the background with black rather than white, and then put it through VSCO to add another colour filter.
iPhone 11 Pro front camera, 1/75sec, ISO 100, using Portrait Mode
Generally now my workflow is as follows: shoot, do some initial editing in the stock Photos app such as sharpening and adding vignette, then pass it over to VSCO to add a filter and more tweaks to sharpening, clarity and a few choice other settings.
As much as the images above may seem effortless, you still need to give consideration to how your face is lit to get the most out of the effect. For these shots, I stood facing my windows, getting mostly front light. There aren’t too many images shot using side light in this post because frankly the results aren’t quite as realistic looking. Sometimes, however, it works pretty well.
iPhone 11 Pro front camera, 1/105sec, ISO 100, using Portrait Mode & VSCO
iPhone 11 Pro front camera, 1/50sec, ISO 200, using Portrait Mode & VSCO
Unfortunately these effects only work on humans as the AI that powers them is trained on faces. Occasionally it gives an interesting result when shooting pets or object but more often than not it just presents a heavy vignette, which is why there’s no shots of the cats using that effect In this post.
There are a few instances that can really test Portrait Mode. Obviously cats are one of them, as they have fur, ears and other pokey out bits that can be a challenge. The geometric patterns of our living room rug can also sometimes cause issues, as the hard lines can be misinterpreted as physcial edges. Not so in this next image.
iPhone 11 Pro telephoto lens, 1/200sec, ISO 20, using Portrait Mode
In fact sometimes the rug can help show how it is increasing the amount of bokeh the further away from the camera things are, as you can see the lines getting increasingly blurred .
iPhone 11 Pro telephoto lens, 1/35sec, ISO 160, using Portrait Mode
Not everything in this post is a Portrait Mode special, however. The iPhone is also capable of taking really good landscape shots as well. This one is a familiar view from Swanage, taken on a grey winter’s day last year.
iPhone 11 Pro telephoto lens, 1/160sec, ISO 20, using Deep Fusion
The quality of images that I can achieve with my phone – with added bonuses like how portable it is, how quick and easy it is to take a shot, and even the fact that it has a wider angle lens on it than anything else I have – means that I’m increasingly going to my phone first when taking images, and have become far less anxious about leaving my camera bag behind when going out. Back in winter when I went for an exploratory walk around some of the woodland near our house, despite bringing my DSLR with me I would go to my phone to take photos first, and ended up taking more images with my phone than my camera.
The first sight that caught my eye on that walk was when I crossed a bridge over the Brighton Mainline.

And country lanes.

My new commute home from London goes from a different station and in a completely different direction, which has also opened up some new sights. I now travel from Blackfriars Station, which bridges the Thames, giving some interesting views of the city, especially in winter when I travel home at night.

Although if you want to see what the same scene looks like during daylight:
iPhone 11 Pro telephoto lens, 1/120sec, ISO 40, using Deep Fusion
And on occasion, we split the difference, and my journey home is marked by a staggering sunset – sometimes whilst still in central London, sometimes whilst I’m out in the countryside.
iPhone 11 Pro wide lens, 1/220sec, ISO 32
I have also attempted to capture relaxing at home shots, since – much like when photographing cats – snapping a quick shot with the phone can ensure the moment doesn’t pass.
iPhone 11 Pro telephoto lens, 1/17sec, ISO 400, using Portrait Mode & VSCO
On occasion, especially in the winter months, the light coming through the window in the living room can create harsh shadows. On occasion I’ve used this to capture some interestingly-lit self portraits.
Occasionally I’ve been able to push that to the extreme – although this image was taken with Portrait Mode, it was not one of the presets that removes the background, such is the amount of light on my face.
iPhone 11 Pro front camera, 1/2200sec, ISO 25, using Portrait Mode & VSCO
iPhone 11 Pro front camera, 1/320sec, ISO 25, using Portrait Mode & VSCO
As I’ve previously mentioned, or at the very least alluded to, we’ve moved to the countryside. It’s lovely, not least because we’re literally a few steps away from actual countryside (we can even see a national park from our bedroom window). Just a short walk away is a small wood, which we’ve been on several walks in now. Especially on a sunny winter’s day, it looks beautiful.
Iphone 11 Pro wide lens, 1/280sec, ISO 32
The iPhone camera has gotten to the point where I trust it in the sort of shooting environments I’d previous never even bother trying to use it – mainly in low light conditions, for instance at a concert. Here, the amazing Transatlantic Sessions perform at a concert in Brighton.
iPhone 11 Pro telephoto lens, 1/25sec, ISO 500, using Deep Fusion
Concerts are one thing, but those are generally well-lit, the challenge is arguing with the camera to ignore the dark background and only expose for the artists, something you encounter with most cameras. Another matter entirely is photograph people in animated, libation-fuelled discussion in a very poorly lit pub, whilst avoiding using flash to not disturb anyone.
iPhone 11 Pro telephoto lens, 1/13sec, ISO 500, using Portrait Mode & VSCO
iPhone 11 Pro wide lens, 1/25sec, ISO 800, using Portrait Mode & VSCO
The camera even copes with more abstract photographs, such as this shot down a cardboard tube.

But ultimately, a phone is for photographing cats, especially ones that sleep as cute as Freddie.

This shot of a game controller is another example of asking Portrait Mode to cope with an inanimate object.

I also found this rose which the phone coped with pretty well.
iPhone 11 Pro telephoto lens, 1/120sec, ISO 32, using Portrait Mode & VSCO
Or these flowers, whatever they are, that grow in my front garden (I’d love to take some sort of credit for it, but they were there when we moved in, and have not really been tended to by us as any point).
iPhone 11 Pro telephoto lens, 1/120sec, ISO 32, using Portrait Mode & VSCO
Or this crocheted fox, the result of one of my wife’s own creative splurges
, a tiny bit lopsided but still entirely lovable.
iPhone 11 Pro telephoto lens, 1/120sec, ISO 50, using Portrait Mode & VSCO
One of the problems with a post of this nature is that the longer it takes to write, the more likely I am to add more images to the pile. This is especially true when the post includes a lot of photographs of my cats being cute, and I am spending a lot of time at home due to a major worldwide pandemic. Even more so when Zelda is after your attention when rolling in the shade on a painfully hot summer lunchtime.
iPhone 11 Pro telephoto lens, 1/505sec, ISO 20, using Portrait Mode & VSCO
Or if Cookie is enjoying a warm day sitting inside in the shade.

I’ve also thrown in a further High Key Mono self portrait, because I still love the results it gives.
iPhone 11 Pro front camera, 1/122sec, ISO 32, using Portrait Mode
As lockdown has eased over 2020, we’ve been able to expand out our bubble a little to include my mother-in-law, who has recently moved about 20 minutes up the road from us. Which has offered limited opportunity to expand my 2020 photographic offerings to something beyond cats and selfies. Well, only just.
iPhone 11 Pro wide lens, 1/122sec, ISO 80, using Portrait Mode & VSCO
Although we’ve been able to get out a little more as lockdown has eased over the last few weeks, it’s still fair to say for the most part I’ve been using my phone to photograph cats.
iPhone 11 Pro telephoto lens, 1/122sec, ISO 64, using Portrait Mode & VSCO
I’ve gotten a bit better at telling when the cats are about to yawn to get ready to get a shot. Luckily they are cuties when they yawn.
iPhone 11 Pro telephoto lens, 1/122sec, ISO 64, using Portrait Mode & VSCO
iPhone 11 Pro telephoto lens, 1/122sec, ISO 32, using Portrait Mode & VSCO
After we entered lockdown and started working from home full time, the cats were allowed out all of the day as we worked. It soon became clear that this was bringing some decent health benefits for the cats, especially Zelda and Freddie, who were both less stressed as a result – Zelda’s fur has even grown back. This led to us finally giving the cats their own cat flap. They were a bit unsure of it at first, Freddie especially.
iPhone 11 Pro telephoto lens, 1/350sec, ISO 20, using Portrait Mode & VSCO
Now they’ve gotten used to it, it’s led to the cats spending a lot of time out at night, and then sleeping during the day, making for lots of photo opportunities for cute, sleeping kittens.

Including, as you’d expect, in a box – nothing has been delivered during lockdown that Freddie hasn’t slept in the box of.

As much as they’ve gotten used to it, occasionally they still decide they can’t get in.

Although Cookie has the freedom of the garden, she is still often to be found inside giving her usual grumpy looks.

With lockdown easing even further, in August we were able to go have a sort-of holiday in Cornwall with some of my wife’s family. Although I ended up having to work for much of it, it still gave a few opportunities for some non-cat pictures.
iPhone 11 Pro wide lens, 1/123sec, ISO 32, using Portrait Mode & VSCO
This was a larger family holiday than usual, with the added bonus of all the fun and restrictions of life currently. It did give the opportunity for a couple of shots of my niece.

iPhone 11 Pro telephoto lens, 1/122sec, ISO 32, using Portrait Mode & VSCO
Yes, that is my camera in her hands. I trusted her with a few shots, but didn’t let her go running off with it. She’s not quite at the point where she has much interest in photography for any length of time – just a curiosity in what other people are doing. Although obviously if she eventually becomes a world famous photographer or journalist I’ll be offering the above shot for her autobiography as the moment it all started.
As I said, I didn’t get much time to do much tourism as I had to work (the advantage of working from home is that you don’t necessarily have to be at home, as long as you have a strong enough internet connection), I did get a couple of days to visit places. The only place I took photos at was St Nectan’s Glen, where I got a couple of iPhone shots (and a few other DSLR shots, so you may see another post on the same in the future).
iPhone 11 Pro telephoto lens, 3sec, ISO 400, using Spectre & VSCO
iPhone 11 Pro telephoto lens, 1/35sec, ISO 400, using Portrait Mode & VSCO
Before restrictions started to tighten again, I went with my family to one of our favourite spots in the UK, Swanage, to scatter some of my dad’s ashes in a place that meant a lot to him and us, something we’d been intending to do almost six months prior before the world shut down. Not exactly a highly photographed trip as I’m sure you’ll understand but I did get a couple of snaps.
iPhone 11 Pro wide lens, 1/2066sec, ISO 32, edited with VSCO
iPhone 11 Pro telephoto lens, 1/1996sec, ISO 20, edited with VSCO
I took my DSLR on that trip. I didn’t even use it. That said I did use it the other day when I went for a drive and found myself randomly at Beachy Head, so I am not exactly getting rid of it yet.
The iPhone – and of course many other smartphones alongside it – have enabled a new era of what is known as computational photography. Obviously the opinions on this will vary; it takes a lot of the thought out of photography, as the increasingly powerful processing power in a modern smartphone (which these days can rival many laptops and desktops) takes a multitude of decisions in the fraction of a second it takes you to push the shutter, including sometimes multiple exposures in order to judge exposure and detail, joining them together at a pixel level using machine learning. So whilst it takes some of the skill out of the taking of a photograph, it does open up quality photography to many more people, but at the same time it still takes a photographer’s eye to get the best out of the equipment.
Despite using my phone for the majority of the photographs I’ve taken in 2020, I am still breaking out my DSLR for the occasional photos, especially ones that require a telephoto lens. Many of them are random shots however, and so are likely to show up in another Random Gems post at some point in the future. In the meantime my phone is still in my pocket when I need it the most. Although the iPhone 12 Pro has just come out…

Verdict of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Review
Things to Consider Before Buying Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G
There is only one thing you should consider when buying this phone. That is fact that it heats up.
JerryRigEverything tore it apart and found out that the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a multi-layered graphite thermal pad. Causing the phone to heat regardless of use.
youtube
This is where the S20 Ultra beats the Galaxy Note20 ultra. It has a copper heat pipe and vapor chamber that allows the device to cool.
Chipset /iOS
The Note 20 Ultra operates on OS Android 10,One UI 2.5
The Chipset Exynos 990 (7 nm+) Snapdragon 865 Plus has improved the overall performance. It’s its standard hardwarer the latest apps. It’s standard hardware is impressive.
Display
The design of the phone is naughty altruistically.
Samsung phones are famous for being big, and the Note 20 Ultra isn’t any different. The phone has a gorgeous screen of 6.9 inches, the device takes the perfect shape of a slab. This will make you feel as if you are using a notebook, which i guess its the whole idea behind the Note series.
Dynamic AMOLED 2X capacity touchscreen, 16M colors display is great. It sets you to enjoy your scrolling when you turn on the adaptive motion smoothness.
The resolution 1440 x 3088 pixels (~496 ppi density) is great. One thing you should know that you cant have max refresh rate at 120 and still get the maximum resolution on the screen. Though the fresh rates save on the battery life that would otherwise be consumed by the device.
The back of this smartphone has a matte finish, which looks better than a glossy finish, though its slippery than normal phones.
Both the front and the back of the phone have a Gorilla Glass Victus, which strengthens your phone and more resistance to scratch compared to normal glass being used on other phones.
JerryGigEeverything conducted a test on the phone, and he is quite impressed with it. He also found out that the device is covered with both plastic, gorrila glass and aluminum foil.
Cnet also, placed the gorilla glass under intense pressure to test its limits, turns out, it breaks. I guess glass is still glass.
Performance
The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has 12 GB RAM, which is enough for an android phone to perform a bunch of tasks without running out of storage. It also has a 126GB storage space. Allowing you to save up all the important content.
You can expand the storage up to 512GB using a SD card, and expense you will incur extra charges.
The processor of this phone is qualcomm snapdragon 439 Octa Core. They ensured that this flagship device is 5G enabled. This is great for those with ideas of a smart home.
Battery Capacity
The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a 4500mAh High-capacity battery. You can use the screen time for up to 9 hours before you recharge it again. At night, the device is draining about 6-10% of the battery when on stand by.
You can fast charge it at 25 watts, reverse wireless charge at 4.5 watts and wireless charge your battery at 15 watts. This non-removable battery performs great for a big phone as the Note 20 ultra.
Camera
The camera owns the 20 ultra with laser autofocus. They create it in such a manner that you would think it is a Lego, yet it has a domino effect when taking photos or videos.
Everyone is raving about it’s new camera

12MP AI Dual Rear Camera
The ultra-wide 12 MP AI rear camera produces okay but not amazing photos, which is basically what you would get with any android ultra-wide camera.
Front AI Beauty Camera
The selfie has 10 MP with a f/2.2, 26mm, it will make the images you take look soft. Such that even without makeup, you will appear as if you have make up on. What they are trying to achieve with their phones is to make you look good. You are free to love or hate them for that!
Space Zoom camera
Good news, the telephoto has 12 MP and 5x optical lense zoom. What’s more intresting is the fact that you can have a digital zoom up-to 50X zoom.
This feature ashamed iPhone 11 Pro Max’s because they don’t come anywhere close to it. The cheaper version of this phone, Galaxy S 20 has lower zoom count and megapixels.
The Front Camera
Finally, the big camera has a triple 108 MP with an aperture of f/1.8. You will take some incredible master pieces.
The best part is the fact that it has a Samsung pixel sensor behind the lenses. The juice is right here. The company wants to differentiate itself from Google and Apple in the photography world.
Techradar tested it and concluded it is amazing
One thing is for a fact though, you will have a blast taking photos/video. Makes sense why they are selling it for ksh. 120000 in Kenya.
Colors
The phone is available in three color Mystic Bronze, Mystic Black, Mystic White. I especially love the bronze color.
Extras
1. Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra S pen Stylus
Finally, the note lovers get to write on the best note pad invented in the technology world.
The company has improved their note app user experience. It has done things that Apple is still trying to catch up and Microsoft will never get close to. So, you can only imagine how good the note pad is.
Tomsguide said that the S pen feels better than pen and paper
You can highlight your hand writing and then copy it into plain text. You could record a meeting, then later convert it into a text file. Best part is that you can export to docs and power point and share it.
This year 2020, the S pen has been placed on the left side of the phone. making the left-handed feel more special. Whichever hand you use to write, the note pad will transform your horrible handwriting into delightful notes that is easily and understandable.
One last thing, you can now organize all of your notes into folders, taking chaos out of your note pad.

I say it’s the best, with a grain of salt
– AMAZING display, I had so many high end phones, including the IPhone 11 pro max and Google Pixel 4XL & even the note 10, but this screen here bests all of them. The high refresh rate, the beautiful colors, and the better ratio (it’s a little wider than the S20 ultra for example), all this makes for an outstanding screen.
a little that cropping a 108 MP picture didn’t yield the perfect result. The videos are even better. You won’t find a phone with a better main camera on the market.
– The S pen is pretty useful for taking notes! I didn’t feel like I needed it for anything else except, may be, for a selfie, so even though it isn’t the biggest selling point, it’s worth mentioning.
– It looks great! Yup, design wise, that phone looks really good, that it feels bad putting any covers on it. I just ordered a very slim, transparent case & I wouldn’t recommend anything else.
Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Price in Kenya
The Samsung galaxy note 20 ultra price in Kenya is about ksh. 12000. Is this smartphone worth the price of a hybrid cow? At ksh. 120,000, it had better be. This is one of the most expensive flagships released by brands in the year 2020.
But is it worth the premium price? My answer is yes. It is more than just a phone. If you can appreciate all that we have reviewed above, you would agree of the same thing.
Alternatives
Are looking for a less expensive smartphone. Here are three alternative you should look at that are worth your time and still on the same category:
Samsung Galaxy S20 series
Earlier we mentioned that Note 20 Ultra is competing against the Galaxy S20 series. The two devices have a lot of similar specs such as wireless charging, One UI, 120Hz OLED screen and they both have IP68 design on the phone.
The S20 is a great phone so long as you don’t care about the camera improvements made on the Note 20 Ultra and the S Pen. If you want a cutting edge experience, then consider purchasing the Note 20 Ultra.
If money is a factor to consider when buying a new device, i would recommend that you pick the S20. You will have a great device and save up on a few thousand shillings.
Samsung Galaxy Note 10 series
If you love the Note family and want to save money, then picking the Galaxy Note 10 is also a great option. Both the Note 10 and Note 20 Ultra have Snapdragon 865 Plus, OLED 60Hz panels, 10 MP selfie camera and a flexible front camera.
Note 10 is a relatively cheap flagship that comes with an S pen. It comes with a big battery capacity of 3,500mAh. also has a big battery capacity of 3500mAh, fast charging, and it supports wireless charging of 15 watts.
OnePlus 8 Pro
If you want to take a break from Samsung, consider the OnePlus 8 Pro. It has lots of similar features. Such as a 120Hz refresh rate, 30Watts wireless charging, Snapdragon silicon and IP68 rating.
One plus 8 Pro also has a quad main camera with 48 MP, 48 MP Ultra-wide camera, a 5MP color filter and a 8MP 3X telephoto. Pretty much of what we have seen on the Note 20 Ultra.
Verdict of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Review
Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra in Kenya is a great phone. What makes it perfect is the minor improvements made by the company. Better low light photography, all options when shooting video, no fingerprint smudge on the back of the phone and the variable refresh rate saving on the battery.
Could Samsung’s Galaxy Note 20 do better? Yes, for a flagship of 2020 costing this much, they should expand the storage they are offering from 126 GB to 256 GB. But then again, every time you buy a phone there, a trade-offs you have to make.
Would i recommend you buy this phone? The answer is both Yes and No. Buying a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 or 10 would still perform a decent job and they are less expensive.
One reason why people upgrade their devices is cause the latest smartphone is super nice and flashy. But that’s not with Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, the phone is not classy but it is a tech bump. it has better improvements from what there is on the other note smartphones. Making it worth your time and money when you buy this phone.

Canadaland Guide to Canada (Published in America), by Jesse Brown and friendsBrown finds plenty of hilarious awfulness in Canada's past and present, especially in the way that Canadians talk about themselves when they expect Americans might be listening to them. From Justin Trudeau (who talks about refugees abandoned by Trump but takes no action to improve their lot, because he's too busy taking away the citizenship rights of naturalised Canadians with objectionable politics, greenlighting climate-destroying pipelines for the Tar Sands, and making the most of the sweeping surveillance powers he promised he'd abolish after taking office) to Rob Ford to Quebec separatism and the long, deplorable traditions of drunken, racist Canadian leaders who are remembered as wise, even-handed leaders, Brown punctures ever bubble that Canadians have ever blown over the border toward our American cousins.
I laughed aloud at many of these jokes, and they got under my skin, in just the same way that a perfect Samantha Bee rant will. This is a book of weaponised jokes about a country that has spent more than a century burnishing its credentials by blithely asserting its moral and temperamental superiority to its erratic and flamboyant southern neighbour -- and every shot hits its mark. Briggs Land Volume 1: State of Grace, by Brian WoodStories matter: the recurring narrative of radical Islamic terror in America (a statistical outlier) makes it nearly impossible to avoid equating "terrorist" with "jihadi suicide bomber" -- but the real domestic terror threat is white people, the Dominionists, ethno-nationalists, white separatists, white supremacists and sovereign citizens who target (or infiltrate) cops and blow up buildings. That's what makes Brian Wood's first Briggs Land collection so timely: a gripping story of far-right terror that is empathic but never sympathetic.
Briggs Land builds on the empathic -- but not sympathetic -- portrayals of far-right separatists in Wood's seminal graphic novel DMZ. It's timely: the Trump era has been a moment of uneasy glory for white nationalists and their fellow travelers, who, having long craved the spotlight, aren't entirely sure what to do with it.
Briggs Land is also in development as an AMC TV series, further evidence of its zeitgeisty nature. Being a Brian Wood comic, it's also gripping as hell, a nonstop crime novel that involves rogue FBI agents, ruthless skinheads, closet racists and overt ones, doting parents who also happen to be unspeakable monsters. Kindred (Graphic Novel), adapted from the novel by Octavia ButlerKindred is the story of Dana, an African-American writer married to a white man in 1976, who finds herself being violently yanked through time and space to the side of her distant ancestor, Rufus, the son of an enslaver who lives on a plantation in antebellum Delaware. Rufus -- a self-destructive, traumatized and spoiled child -- periodically puts himself in mortal danger, and when he does, Dana is torn from 1976 to save him, and is stranded in the violent, totalitarian south until she experiences mortal terror, whereupon she returns to her present, only moments after she left. Luckily for Dana, mortal terror is a commonplace occurance for black people in Delaware in the 19th century.
Dana's relationship to Rufus, and to Rufus's freeborn, African-American friend Alice -- whom Dana knows to be her ancestress -- is wrenching and claustrophobic, as she is enlisted to help Rufus sexually assault and eventually enslave Alice, revealing the deep violence lurking in Dana's own distant past.
For many years, Dana and her white husband, Kevin, are stranded in history, together and separately, and this affords Butler a chance to add yet more nuance to her tale, weaving in the point of view, privileges and horror of a white ally who, nevertheless, enjoys a measure of safety his black wife cannot claim.
The graphic novel adaptation is extremely faithful to the Butler novel, and does brilliant things with color-palettes, using different tones to demark the present and past, and also the belowstairs and abovestairs places in the lives of the enslaved people. The lines are vigorous and rough, conveying emotion and urgency.[Read More]

THEFT: A History of Music, by James Boyle and Jennifer JenkinsTheft traces millennia of musical history, from Plato's injunction against mixing musical styles to the outrage provoked by the troubadours who appropriated sacred music and turned it into bawdy songs about wanting to have sex with hot teenagers (a trick Ray Charles repeated hundreds of years later!); from the racist outrage over rock and roll's challenge to white supremacy to the fights over sampling and the exploitation of African-American musicians who were ripped off 40 years ago versus the interests of their musical progeny whose sample-based music has been distorted and even outlawed by the same musical corporations that screwed the R&B artists, in the name of defending those artists (!).
Jenkins and Boyle are two of the staunchest defenders of fair use and remixing -- their first comic, Bound by Law, was a kind of Understanding Comics for the legalities of fair use -- and it shows: Theft is as laden with visual, textual and musical references as a Dizzy Gillespie solo, an early Public Enemy wall-of-sound, an illegal Girl Talk mashup.[Read More]

The Free, by Lauren McLaughlinIsaac West is a mixed-race kid who never knew his dad; he and his sister have raised their alcoholic, abusive mother as much as she's raised them. But Isaac has a plan: his little sister Janelle is smart, better than he'll ever be, and he's going to get her out of their mutual hellhole and into a private school -- and to make that happen, he's graduated from petty theft into grand theft auto, under the supervision of his high-school auto-shop teacher, a cut-rate Fagin who trains and oversees a gang of junior car thieves.
It's this teacher who insists that Isaac should plead guilty to beating a man comatose in a car-heist that went wrong, though the kid who actually did the beat-down was the teacher's cousin, a hulking giant of a kid who has already got a conviction under his belt and faces being tried as an adult if he goes down.
For Isaac, it's an easy choice: spend 30 days in juvie, complete his rehab program, and in return, he'll get enough to send Janelle off to private school. All he has to do is survive, and he's been doing that all his life.
From here, McLaughlin has all the elements for a tight, claustrophobic novel that veers between the terror and camaraderie of incarceration; the brutally honest drama therapy group that Isaac must attend if he's to be released; the mounting danger to his sister and all of the repressed feelings and guilt that weigh Isaac down.
While there's some revenge and redemption here, mostly what there is is unblinking reality, a willingness to confront the impossible without denying it. The kids in Isaac's world are in trouble, and that trouble isn't going to get better for most of them, and maybe not for Isaac. Some of those kids are pretty terrible, but even at their worst, they're still kids, and still rounded people with their own virtues and stories.
I don't know when I've read a more empathic novel, and it's been a long time since I read one that was more sorrowful and joyful at the same time. [Read More]

The Hardware Hacker: Adventures in Making and Breaking Hardware, by Andrew "bunnie" HuangThe book draws heavily on Huang's own hardware projects, which have included substantial manufacturing in south China, with many hard-won lessons about how things can go wrong and how to make them go right. This is more than a checklist or memoir: it's nothing less than a masterclass in modern manufacturing, and even if you never plan on manufacturing anything, reading these chapters will explain the material world around you like few other texts.
This dovetails neatly into a meditation on the differences between Western and Chinese approaches to "intellectual property" and the way this has informed the manufacturing processes whose outflows are all around us. In these chapters, Huang proves himself to be a thoughtful and incisive critic of law as well as technology, and the thorny questions he raises show up the normal discussion on these subjects up for a shallow scrape over the surface of something deep and difficult.
Huang uses these broad legal and technical passages as a foundation for the second half of the book, which lay out the detective work that Huang did to realize his various hardware challenges, from stick-on soft circuits to an insanely clever device that circumnavigates the law through tight and unsuspected secret creeks that allow him to enter territory that no engineer has ever seen by legal means.
The book concludes with its most speculative and future-looking chapter: a disquisition on the similarities (and differences) between computational bioscience and hardware hacking, based on his work with his "perlfriend" -- his perl-hacking, bioscientist girlfriend -- on hacking genomes. New York 2140, by Kim Stanley RobinsonIt's 2140 and trillions of dollars' worth of the world's most valuable real estate is now submerged under fifty feet of water, resulting from two great "surges" where runaway polar melting created sudden, punctuated disasters that displaced billions of people, wiped trillions off the world's balance sheets, and turned the great cities of the world into drowned squatter camps.
But it's 2140, and the cities are coming back. The combination of financial speculation, desperate refugees willing to do anything to find shelter, and new technological innovations are spawning "SuperVenice"s where boats replace cars and high-rises connect to each other with fairytale skybridges, and pumped-out subway stations become underwater leisure clubs. No SuperVenice is more super than New York City, where the boats ply midtown Manhattan's skyscrapers and everything from Chelsea down is an intertidal artificial reef where, every now and again, hundreds of squatters die as the buildings topple.
The forces of finance are deeply interested in the intertidal zones. These great cities were once the world's ultimate luxury products and now they're marine salvage, waiting to be dredged up from the tidal basins, dusted off and monetized. Yeah, there's millions of inconvenient poors hanging out in them, but they're a market failure, producing suboptimal rents on some seriously distressed assets that need a little TLC, capital infusion, and ruthless securitization to bring them back.
Robinson is a master of turning stories about zoning disputes and local politics into gripping, un-put-down-able adventure tales (his novel Pacific Edge remains the most uplifting book in my library). New York 2140 is a spectacular exemplar of the tactic: the financial shenanigans form a backdrop for submarine drone-wars, black-ops kidnappings, private security assassinations, non-state actor cyberwar and economic terrorism, buried treasure hunting, and big, muscular technologies from giant dredging barges to aerosolized diamond sprays. Penguin Galaxy Boxed Set, introduced by Neil GaimanLast October, Penguin released its Galaxy boxed set, a $133 set of six hardcover reprints of some of science fiction's most canonical titles: The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K LeGuin; Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A Heinlein; 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C Clarke; Dune by Frank Herbert; The Once and Future King by TH White; and Neuromancer, by William Gibson.
The series is curated and introduced by Neil Gaiman, whose essay on the charm and value of science fiction appears at the start of each of the handsome volumes. It's a fine essay, placing each book in its historical context, and turning a writerly eye to their construction and techniques, as well as some of the memoir that makes Gaiman essays such fine reads (see, for example, his 2016 essay collection The View From the Cheap Seats).
As nice as that essay is, it's eclipsed by the gorgeous design, courtesy of Spanish designer Alex Trochut, whose impressive CV includes a Grammy nomination for Best Recording Package. Trochut does away with fussy book-jackets and prints his titles straight onto the books' boards in stylized, embossed gold leaf type -- with clever type-art for every cover. [Read More]

SHADE THE CHANGING GIRL v.1: Earth Girl Made Easy, by Cecil CastellucciLoma Shade, as her own unique character, was a way of being steeped in the world of Shade the Changing Man, while being its own thing. Some people say that Shade the Changing Girl seems to be a direct sequel of the Milligan run. I say not so. I’ve always approached it as a kind of side-quel. Creator Cecil Castellucci wanted to take care to have nods and echoes to them both, but to be able to stand narratively on its own. It was a way of striking out in a new direction while plucking elements from the Ditko original and the Milligan run.
Our Shade the Changing Girl is a way of changing the changing.
The body of a teenage girl was a great place to start that change. The body of bully was the way to take it to the next level. The idea of a real alien, who moves like a bird in human form was the best way to express it. Add in Marley Zarcone’s wongld. They are blooming and bursting with feelings and big body changes. They are confident and awkward. They are experimenting with identity. They are constantly changing.
When we are teenagers, we are figuring out how to become who we are. To throw down and figure out what it really means to be human and to break free from our parents and to think for our selves. This is why Castellucci loved writing Shade, because as an alien, she mirrors our own growth in this world. She can see the quotidian with eyes that we can’t see the world with. She has to figure out how to transform herself from who she was to who she isn’t. And through her we dive deep into her attempts to discover the meaning of humanity. Loma Shade is changed profoundly by being this mean girl and having to navigate the fall out of living in Megan’s body and in her world. [Read More]

Paper Girls 1, 2 and 3, by Brian K Vaughanhttps://boingboing.net/2016/12/14/brian-k-vaughan-and-cliff-chan.html https://Paper Girls stars an all-girl cast of newspaper delivery kids for a fictional Cleveland newspaper, circa 1988 -- they are instantly and wholeheartedly likable, like the Goonies or the cast of Stranger Things. They convene on November 1, when the mean teenagers of Cleveland are still out an about and making mischief, picking on the likes of them, and they band together in mutual self-defense.
Then things get weird.
The girls are assaulted by a group of costumed teens, who rip off a Radio Shack walkie-talkie that one of them saved for months to buy. The girls chase down these goons, ending up in a partially built house, whose basement holds a spaceship of some kind, or maybe it's a time-machine -- and after a flash and a bang, they emerge to a transformed neighborhood, overcast with a tornado out of which flap huge, monstrous dinosaurs ridden by lance-wielding, argot-speaking warriors who kill and kidnap all they meet.
Before long, the girls are hurled into a mystery tale of Vaughnian complexity, chased through time and space, meeting ambiguous heroes and villains, including several who may be clones of them -- or older versions, or neither. (Don't foreget books Two and Three) [Read More]

Bitch Doctrine: Essays for Dissenting Adults, by Laurie PennyIf you've followed Penny's work, you'll know that the thing that sets her apart from other enraged columnists is her empathy: her ability to understand the self-serving rationalizations, radioactive bullshit, and emotional damage that drives men to threaten her with rape and murder for pointing out that things aren't exactly fair.
But while Penny is perfectly capable of understanding her ideological opponents -- better than they understand themselves, without a doubt -- she doesn't offer them any sympathy. This sympathy -- no less well-informed, no less analytical -- is reserved for people who are getting the shittiest end of the stick: trans people, people of color, poor people, disabled people, other women. Even when she feuds with them, even when she is laid low by anger from her allies, she does the hard work to look past her own hurt feelings, to the missteps that let her to a place of conflict.
Penny is a bridge between two modes of political writing, a hybrid that gets the best of both and offsets their deficits: on the one hand, she's clearly in the Hunter S Thompson gonzo tradition (her adventures running down violent neo-Nazis in Greece are a match for anything HST wrote about Hell's Angels or police detective conventions); on the other hand, she's got the scholarly habit of finding and presenting an issue from every side, even the ones she disagrees with. But while the gonzos reduce their opponents to caricatures, and while scholarly work can dissolve the point of view into a view from nowhere, wishy-washy and free from any kind of thesis or real muscle, Penny is able to forcefully convey her point of view, and back it up by showing that she understands exactly what her opponents are thinking, and why, precisely, they are full of shit. Lizard Music, by Daniel PinkwaterLizard Music is a novel about Victor, a kid who falls asleep while doing a model airplane and wakes up when the local TV station is going off the air, who discovers that the true late-night programming comes from humanoid lizards who live in a secret nearby volcano and worship Walter Cronkite.
Victor travels to the land of the lizards with the Chicken Man, a recurring Pinkwater character: a kind of hobo figure whose pet chicken is wise beyond her years and dander. What happens next will... Well, it will make you weirder.
No author has ever captured the great fun of being weird, growing up as a happy mutant, unfettered by convention, as well as Pinkwater has. When I was a kid, Pinkwater novels like Lizard Music made me intensely proud to be a little off-center and weird -- they taught me to woo the muse of the odd and made me the happy adult I am today. It's one of those books that, in the right hands at the right time, can change your life for the better and forever. [Read More]

Landscape With Invisible Hand, by MT AndersonIn 2002, MT Anderson blew up the YA dystopia world with Feed, his zeitgeisty, prescient novel about "identity crises, consumerism, and star-crossed teenage love in a futuristic society where people connect to the Internet via feeds implanted in their brains" -- in his latest, Landscape with Invisible Hand, Anderson takes us to a world where neoliberal aliens have sold Earth's plutocrats the technologies to make work obsolete and with it, nearly human being on earth.
Now we all have to live with that reality: former superstar luxury car salesmen, bank tellers, teachers, programmers -- everyone except for a tiny elite of financial engineers, really -- have been replaced by technology sold by the vuuv (that's the alien race) to the world's 1 percenters when they inducted the human race into the galactic prosperity sphere.
Landscape is told as a series of acerbic, short vignettes -- latter-day Douglas Coupland riffs -- in the voice of Adam, a teenager living in a rotting suburban home amidst the remains of his rotting suburban life, scrounging for rice and beans and painting, painting, painting, the only escape he has. Each chapterlette opens with Adam describing a painting that sets the scene, part of the blasted, wasted dystopia that 99% of the human race lives in while sneering aliens and financial executives tell them to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, get jobs, and stop looking for handouts. Stories of Your Life and OthersTed Chiang's writing is rare and precise, weaving threads of science fiction into something so haunting and humane I've woken up dreaming about it more than once. Here you can read most of his published work, including the novella that was recently filmed as Arrival and is currently in U.S. theaters. But my favorites are the Borgesian "Tower of Babel," about an engineer breaking through the vault of heaven, and "Division by Zero."

The Power, by Naomi AldermanIn The Power, a day dawns, not so long from now, in which every 15-year-old girl finds herself with the power to deal out electric shocks, emanating from an unsuspected organ called "the skein," which rests along the collarbone. What's more, any woman can do the trick, once a 15 year old shows them how.
Chaos. Glorious chaos.
The world's sex-slaves kill their pimps. The women of Saudi Arabia foment revolution. Women whose husbands beat them strike back. Girls whose fathers rape them find themselves able to defend themselves -- with lethal force, if it comes to that.
Concerned parents ask to have their boys separated from the vicious girls who stalk them through school. Mean girl cliques take on a new, deadly overtone. Law and order teeters.
Against this background, a cast of characters: Roxy, the daughter of a ruthless British gangster; Joc, the daughter of an ambitious midwestern politician; Allie, a much-abused foster kid whose foster father has a surprise in store for him, and Tunde, a Nigerian lad whose workshops of storytelling through digital photography just took on a new significance.
Through these characters, a plot as intricate and fast moving as any thriller, with lots of grace notes and seeming detours that converge with the main storyline, giving it energy and velocity.
And throughout, when you're finished, the realization that there was so much more going on, stuff I can't discuss without spoilers -- a story within the story that is chilling, thrilling, disturbing. [Read More]

Archangel, by William GibsonFrom the start of its run in 2016, Archangel went from strength to strength, packing in so many goddamned O.G. cyberpunk eyeball kicks per page that it felt like some kind of cask-strength distillation of all the visual and action elements that gave the original mirrorshades stuff its dark glitter.
Now that the comic's run is done, the five-issue tale is revealed as a masterful, beautifully plotted war story set in three different wars: WWII as we know it, WWII as it might have been, and a distant all-out nuclear conflagration that may or may not have been an inside job.
This is a time-travel story, but it's one that sets out to break the genre's conventions: it opens with the ruthless son of America's power-grabbed president-for-life traveling back to Berlin at the end of WWII to murder his grandfather and take his place. Take that, grandfather parodox.
Hunting the president's son and his goons is "The Pilot," a USAF ninja in a camouflage suit who must prevent Junior from destroying another world without giving Junior the chance to detonate the belly-bomb all US armed-forces members must have implanted when they enlist. Thankfully, it has a 30 foot range.
Archangel is visually stunning, with all the dark romance of war-torn Berlin as a setting: deviant cabarets, black marketeers' dens, chop-shops, makeshift Soviet command-posts and secret airfields. Then there's the futuristic world of Junior and the president, seen in a cramped bunker in which a rogue scientist is scrambling to support The Pilot from the distant future and a different timeline. Vacationland: True Stories from Painful Beaches, by John HodgmanMy first impression of Vacationland was that I'd found a modern version of Steve Martin's classic Cruel Shoes. Hodgman is so very witty, and as he sets up his memoir -- the story of how he was a weird kid raised by loving but largely unconcerned parents -- he has so many tinder-dry asides and beautifully turned sentences and jokes with long fuses that unexpectedly detonate paragraphs later that I was really getting ready to relive my own childhood.
Right as I was getting comfortably settled into Vacationland, I discovered that Hodgman had smoothly transitioned me into some really profound emotional truth -- it's where he starts talking about his mother's untimely death and how he reacted to her terminal illness -- and then back into that dry, comedic mode, slipping the knife in and pulling it out so smoothly that I hadn't even noticed until the blood started to drip. That kind of maneuver requires both a steady hand a very sharp knife, and Hodgman has both.
This sneaky book pulls that move over and over, using comedy and narrative confidence to make important points about privilege, self-delusion, parenting, death, birth, cities, alienation, love -- the whole gamut.
All without ever losing the comedy, which is funny stuff, and it's not a spoonful of sugar that helps all that serious medicine go down, it's perfectly blended into those serious themes.
This isn't a book like Cruel Shoes: it's the book Cruel Shoes gets to be when it grows up. [Read More]

The Takeaway
Best Places to Sell Phones Online
To start, the best places to sell phones is going to be online. There are a ton of great places to choose from, but if you want to make this quick and simple; we recommend BuybackBoss to start.
1. BuybackBoss
BuybackBoss is our first choice when it comes to selling your old phone online. For starters, they guarantee to give you the highest price for your device. They also have a Trustpilot rating of 9.6 out 10.
If you find somewhere online that offers you a better price, you can simply send them an email (explanation on their website) with a link to the higher offer. Once they see the better offer, they will update your offer to beat their competitors and notify you once it’s ready to go.
They have three simple steps when it comes to selling your old phone.
First you will head over to their site and get a quote in 30 seconds or less. Next, you will ship your used phone for free and even track your shipment as well. Once your item is shipped, you get the choice of getting paid via check or through PayPal.
With a high Trustpilot rating and the guarantee that they will be the best price, it’s obvious why we started with BuybackBoss.
2. Deculttr
Decluttr is a close second choice when it comes to selling your old phone. They have paid out over $300 million to over 6 million people and have Trustpilot rating of 8.9 out of 10.
youtube
Sell on Decluttr Now
How it works:
Very similar to BuybackBoss, but they do have an updated app and offer two more payment options beyond PayPal and check. They can pay via direct deposit or even a donation to a charity.
Decluttr has definitely been one of the pioneers when it comes to selling your old phone, however they don’t guarantee the highest price which is why we put them at #2.
3. Amazon & Amazon Trade-In Program
With Amazon you can sell your phone two different ways. You can use Amazon’s Trade-In program and get an Amazon gift card for your phone, or you can sell your phone directly on the site and get cash from a third party buyer.
If you’re okay with having an Amazon Gift Card for your phone instead of cash, the trade-in program could be the way to go, although you may not get as much money for your phone since Amazon will still need to make a profit by reselling it.
When I checked my old Moto G phone on Amazon’s trade-in site, they were paying “up to” $6.80 for similar trade in models.
However, when I searched “used Moto G phones” on the traditional Amazon shopping site, I found I would pay between $30 and $60 for a used one. Even after listing and selling fees you’ll likely get more money selling your phone to a third party when you use Amazon.
The Good: Large audience and everyone uses an Amazon Gift Card.
The Bad: You may not get as much for your old phone.
4. Gazelle
Gazelle buys old cell phones directly from private party sellers for the purpose of reselling them. It’s easy to sell through Gazelle – no waiting for someone to take your offer or meeting up with them.
You just hit the “sell” button on the site, enter your phone make and model and they’ll give you an offer price. After you accept their offer price, Gazelle will send you a free shipping label and then pay you via an Amazon gift card, via PayPal or they’ll send you a check.
Also, keep in mind Gazelle does not buy all phone models nor do they buy phones tied to all carriers. You’ll have to check their site for specific info on which types of phones they buy.
The Good: Extremely quick, completely free to sell and multiple options for payout.
The Bad: Not all phone models will be bought back from you.
5. eBay
You probably already know at least a little bit about how eBay works. A few notes about selling your used cell phone on eBay:
Be sure to include a buffer for listing and selling fees in as you price your phone
Use other similar sold phones and listings when determining a phone price point
Decide ahead of time whether or not you’ll offer free shipping (it often makes an attractive lure for potential buyers) and then consider that cost as you choose your listing price as well
The Good: Large audience and opportunity to sell back to the retailer for higher profit.
The Bad: Communicating with potential buyers, creating your listing and then shipping your item.
6. Gadget Gobbler
Gadget Gobbler works similarly to sites like Gazelle: you get a quote for your phone, get a free shipping label once you’ve accepted their offer, and get paid from them after you send in your phone and they examine it.
One difference between Gadget Gobbler and Gazelle is that Gadget Gobbler pays via PayPal or a check only – no Amazon gift card option available. But personally, I’d prefer cash anyway. 🙂
Again, remember when you’re selling to companies that plan on reselling your phone for a profit that you’ll probably get less for the phone, although the process is super easy and streamlined compared to trying to sell it to a private party.
The Good: Payout is via a check or PayPal and a very simple selling process.
The Bad: You may not get as much for your phone.
7. Nextworth
Nextworth will also make an offer for your phone and send you a prepaid shipping label. After you accept their offer and ship your phone, they’ll pay you in the form of a PayPal deposit or they’ll mail you a check.
One thing to note about many of the companies that buy back your phone directly is they will analyze your phone once they receive it to be sure it matches the condition you said it was in when you got your offer.
If your phone is in worse condition than you stated, you may get less than originally agreed upon. Nextworth has a cool feature in that they’ll forgive any price differences (i.e. if the phone is worth less than what you were initially offered due to it being in worse condition) up to $10 and pay you as promised anyway.
That’s a feature you won’t find very often with other companies.
The Good: They send prepaid shipping label and payment via PayPal or check.
The Bad: You may get less than what you had originally agreed upon.
8. Wirefly
Wirefly is a cell phone and cell phone service retailer that pays you cash when you send in your used cell phone.
As with most companies, you need to state the condition of your phone and then send it in to be evaluated. Once they determine it’s in the condition you stated it is, they’ll pay you cash via Paypal, or you have a few other options as well.
The Good: Multiple forms of payment including cash.
The Bad: Not as fast as other selling sites.
9. SellBroke
SellBroke will buy your used cell phones (and other electronic items) even if they no longer work. As with most companies, you need to enter the description of your item with them, and they’ll give you a quote.
Once you’ve accepted their offer they’ll send you a prepaid shipping label and you can send in your item for evaluation.
Payment is made via PayPal or by check – whichever you prefer.
The Good: They may also buyback other used electronics from you as well.
The Bad: You may not get as much for your used electronics as you could elsewhere.
10. Gadget Salvation
Gadget Salvation works the same as many other companies: get a quote for your phone, a free shipping label if you agree to the quote, and they’ll pay you after they receive and assess your device.
These guys will pay you via PayPal, Venmo or Chase QuickPay.
The Good: If you find a better price for your phone from a qualifying competitor, Gadget Salvation will pay you that price plus 5% more.
The Bad: You may not get as much as you could private party.
11. MaxBack
MaxBack will quote you for your cell phone and send you a prepaid shipping label like the others. However, they offer one important difference: they’ll guarantee your quote for up to 30 days.
Prices in the world of used electronics change rapidly, so this could be a great incentive to use MaxBack as opposed to a company that won’t give a 30-day guarantee.
Remember though that all quotes are subject to verification of the phone’s condition as stated when the quote was given. MaxBack will pay you via PayPal or they’ll send you a check.
The Good: They will guarantee your quote for up to 30 days and multiple ways to get paid out.
The Bad: The cost of the convenience with MaxBack may eat into your profit.
Best Places to Sell Phones Near You
I’m sharing a variety of different avenues here for selling your old cell phone. Each works a bit differently so be sure to read the fine print so you know what you’re required to give – and how much money you’ll get – when you sell your phone.
Although we believe the best place to sell phones is always going to be online, some of you are still a little old school. If you don’t mind taking a drive to a storefront or kiosk, here are some of the best places you sell your phones near you.
12. EcoATM
EcoATM has kiosks across the country where you can deposit your old cell phone, have evaluated and get cash on the spot.
There are over 2,700 EcoATM kiosks across the country, according to the company’s website. EcoATM also takes steps to help ensure a phone can’t be stolen and deposited into a kiosk.
You need to submit a valid state ID if you’re going to deposit a phone into an EcoATM kiosk, and they will also take steps to prevent misuse of the information on your old phone as well.
This could be a good option if you want cash fast. Also, if you decide you don’t want to accept their price, they’ll give you your phone back.
The Good: The fastest way to get cash for used phone if kiosk near you.
The Bad: You probably won’t be getting top dollar for your used phone.
13. Craigslist
Craigslist (or similar sites) are also popular venues for selling your used cell phone. You can probably get more for your phone if you sell it on Craigslist than you would by selling to a vendor – provided you are selling directly to a private party that wants to keep the phone for themselves.
Some private parties on Craigslist do buy used cell phones for the purpose of reselling them, which could potentially reduce your profit. However if you sell to someone wishing to keep and use the phone, you will likely get more money.
Search other similar listings on Craigslist to give you an idea of how much you should ask for your phone, and have a bottom-line dollar amount you’ll accept before you post your listing so that you’ll be prepared to haggle.
The Good: You will likely get the most money using Craigslist.
The Bad: The hassle factor of meeting up to sell your item is higher.
14. Walmart Trade-In Program
Like Amazon and others, Walmart will also buy your used cell phone, most often for the purpose of refurbishing and re-selling it.
After they make you an offer – and you accept their offer – they’ll send you a free shipping label with which to send the phone in. In return you’ll get a Walmart eGift card.
Could be a good choice if you like to shop at Walmart, but don’t expect to get a large offer for your phone, especially if it’s an older one.
The Good: Walmart does it all for you.
The Bad: Payment is limited to Walmart gift card.
15. BestBuy
With the Best Buy Trade-in Program you can get a Best Buy gift card for your used cell phone if you trade it in.
The main difference I could find between the Best Buy trade-in program and some of the others is that there are a few items Best Buy will only let you trade if you purchased the item at Best Buy and still have the receipt.
This rule seems to apply to local restrictions in some states/cities and not to Best Buy as a whole, according to their website.
The Good: Very fast and easy and great for BestBuy shoppers.
The Bad: Some phones will only be accepted if they were purchased at BestBuy and you have the receipt.
16. Target Trade-In Program
Target’s trade-in program works similarly to Walmart’s. You search your device on their website to get an offer. After you accept the offer you send it to them via a prepaid shipping label.
After they receive and assess your device, you’re sent a Target gift card for the agreed-upon amount – provided the phone is in the shape you said it was. Then you’re off to shop!
Again, this could be a good choice if you shop at Target frequently, but if you want actual cash for your phone you’ll want to choose another option.
The Good: Very fast and easy and great for Target shoppers.
The Bad: You’re limited to a Target gift card instead of a cash.
17. Gamestop
Gamestop also accepts cell phones for trade-in through their trade-in program. One different thing about Gamestop is that they’ll give you an option of either taking store credit or a cash payout.
Keep in mind you will receive more for your phone if you choose store credit than you would if you chose a cash payout.
The Good: Great for Gamestop shoppers and they also offer cash payout.
The Bad: You may not get as much for your phone as if you sold it private party.
18. Facebook Buy and Sell Groups
You could try Facebook to sell your used cell phone. There are buy and sell groups that specifically promote cell phone sales, or you could just try and sell yours on a buy and sell group in your area, which would probably be the easiest route.
The nice thing about Facebook is you won’t pay any listing or sale fees, and you have the potential to reach a larger audience right in your local area.
The Good: Free to list your phone which results in higher profit.
The Bad: There is the hassle factor of selling your phone private party.
Other Options to Sell Used Phone
19. GizMogul
GizMogul promises “free shipping, fast payments, highest payout guaranteed” on their website. It sure wouldn’t hurt to at least get a quote from them for your device with those kinds of promises.
Like most companies they’ll send you a free shipping label, and they pay via PayPal (or they’ll send you a check) once they’ve verified the condition of your phone.
The Good: They promise highest payouts if you sell to them.
The Bad: Nothing that stands out to us.
20. YouRenew
YouRenew will buy your old cell phone and other electronic items as well. Simply search your device, get the offer, accept the offer, ship your item (they’ll give you a free shipping label from UPS), and they’ll pay you once they evaluate your phone.
From what I could tell, YouRenew pays only via check, however. This could leave you having to wait for your money via snail mail time.
The Good: They will also buy back old electronics in addition to your phone.
The Bad: They only payout via check.
21. uSell
uSell has paid out over $46 million to people who’ve sent in their used cell phones to their company. Apparently they’re doing something right.
One cool thing about uSell is that they’ll send you an entire free shipping kit – box included – if you sell your phone to them.
And they’ll pay via check or via PayPal, which means you can get your money faster.
The Good: They have an incredible track record and have been around a while.
The Bad: Nothing that stands out to us.
22. Buy Back World
Buy Back World will also send you a free shipping kit if you choose to sell your used cell phone to them.
They pay in a number of different ways:
Paypal
Direct deposit to your bank account
Prepaid debit card
Gift card for Buy Back World
If you choose to take the gift card for Buy Back World, they’ll add an extra 5% onto your offer price.
The Good: You can get an additional 5% if you take the gift card and they have direct deposit to your checking account.
The Bad: Not as quick as some of the other sites from what we can see.
23. Green Buyback
Green Buyback promises to process your used cell phone payment faster than anyone else in the industry. If you’re looking for money super fast, this could be the way to go.
Their process is the same as most other companies: choose your phone, get your quote, ship it, have it assessed and get your cash.
The Good: Promises to be the fastest process against their competitors.
The Bad: Nothing that stands out to us.
24. ItsWorthMore
ItsWorthMore buys many models of cell phones, and other electronic items as well. After you accept your quote they’ll send you a free shipping label, and they’ll pay you via PayPal or check.
They promise to pay within 72 hours of receiving your phone or other electronic item.
The Good: Promises to be the fastest process against their competitors.
The Bad: You will have to wait up to 72 hours for payment.
Other Places Worth Mentioning
25. Itemcycle.com
Itemcycle only buys used Apple and Mac products, so if you have a used iPhone you want to sell you could potentially check out these guys.
They’ll send you a free prepaid shipping label (sounds like you’ll have to find your own box) and will pay via PayPal or via a check.
The Good: They will payout via PayPal or check.
The Bad: They only buy Apple and Mac products.
26. iPhone Antidote
iPhone Antidote, you can probably guess, only buys used iPhones. Why? Probably because they generally sell for more on the used market.
They’ll send you a prepaid shipping kit like uSell does, with a box included. They pay via a check or via PayPal, and they promise not to lower the offer price for your phone provided you’ve chosen the correct model and condition.
The Good: You can get paid out via PayPal or a check in the mail.
The Bad: They only buy back used iPhones.
27. Your Wireless Carrier
One place to check to sell your used phone is directly with your Wireless carrier. Although not all wireless carriers will buy back your phone, many will. Here is a list of some wireless carriers that may consider buying back your used phone:
AT&T
Verizon
T-Mobile
Check directly with your carrier for more information on selling your used cell phone to them.
The Good: You already know and trust your own carrier.
The Bad: Not all carriers with buyback your old phones.
The Takeaway
Many of us have old cell phones collecting dust in drawers or merely acting as paper weights. However, as you can see there are plenty of options for generating a little extra spending money with very little effort on your part.
The general rule of thumb is this: If you’re looking to get the most money for your old phone, you’re going to want to sell your phone for free on sites like Craigslist or Facebook. There of course is a little more hassle this route, but the more hassle usually results in the bigger payoff.
But, if you’re looking to simply get rid of the phone fast, I would recommend choosing one of the sites listed above that does all the groundwork for you. Not sure which site is going to be the best option? Then I would choose based on how they compensate you or what they compensate you with (cash, Paypal, gift card, store credit, etc.)
Lastly, don’t forget to clear your personal information out of your old phone.
Have you sold your old cell phones to any of these companies? If so, we’d love to hear about your experience.
Simply drop a comment below and tell us about your experience (good or bad) with selling your old phone.

Phone book, whats a phone book? 20 everyday tasks that nobody does anymore
CLOSE
With new and efficient technology, these 6 tasks have fallen out of our daily routines. USA TODAY
Daily necessities are vanishing one by one, thanks to new and efficient technology. Stamps, maps and cookbooks still exist, but we hardly ever need them. Why place a personals ad when you can just “swipe left?”
The standard electronics, gear and ways of yesteryear have vanished as if it was never invented at all. As old formats disappear, that leaves us with the task of what to do with our memories.
Even services that seem new are vanishing in the name of progress; Apple is killing off iTunes, for example. and here’s what it means to your music and movies.
Here are some rituals that are no longer required in many households. If you’re 40 years or older, you’ll probably smile with nostalgia. Share this list on social media. Others will enjoy this trip down memory lane too!
1. Memorize a phone number
Pop quiz: How many phone numbers do you know by heart? Some people don’t even know their spouse’s numbers. How times have changed. Now, you tell your smart assistant to call someone in your contacts, or you touch their name on your phone.
The earliest cellphones required you to transfer your entire directory by hand, from the old unit to the new one; now, with cloud technology, your contacts are automatically downloaded.
What happens if you lose your phone, say, at a Disney theme park? This couple got separated and turned to Facebook for help.
2. Use a phone book to find a company to do work around your house
Generation Z may not even know what “Yellow Pages” refers to. They may not have ever seen a phone book.
Online consumer services like Angie’s List and Yelp have made finding service people easy, plus you can read other users’ ratings. One of the newer ways to find ultra-local services is Nextdoor, which has a special section for “recommendations,” along with crime watches and other local info.
3. Sell your car with a cardboard sign stuck on the windshield
Unless you’re selling your vehicle to someone you know and trust, these transactions can get sticky and even a little dangerous, especially with all the trolls. Craigslist started more than 20 years ago, and it’s still going strong, although it, too, still suffers from trolls and weirdos. If you want to sell your car, here are three sites that may be better than Craigslist.
4. Figure out math in your head
Few of us ever carried calculators with us to the grocery store. In contrast, pretty much everyone with a smartphone uses it to do basic calculations, no matter where or when you need it. In fact, you don’t even have to jab numbers anymore, physical or virtual: Tell Siri to solve a math problem, or command Alexa to do that pesky long division for you, along with countless other handy skills.
5. Call and ask a family member, “Where are you?”
Find My Friends changed the family-safety landscape by geographically connecting iPhone users. This app was a life-saver for parents with kids, adults taking care of aging parents, and countless others. Phone Tracker is a free app for iPhone and Android-powered phones that not only tracks location but also messaging and web activity.

6. Tell time by hands on a clock
Like cursive writing, analog clocks may be teetering on extinction. Few people with smartphones bother with watches anymore, unless they’re fashion statements or fitness trackers. With digital clocks dominating our computers and hardware, those 12-numeral timepieces may become pure novelties.
Even your trusted alarm clock has received a tech makeover. Click or tap for three apps that monitor your sleep cycle, and wake you up when you’ll feel the most rested.
7. Make photo albums
It’s hard to imagine printing an image at a one-hour photo store, taking back your packet of 4×6 snapshots, and then meticulously pasting them into a faux-leather photo album. Given the ease of digital photography, and the innumerable images you could produce on a regular day, you’d fill up entire shelves in no time.
Photo-sharing services like Flickr and Amazon Cloud and have existed for some years, and now some apps will help you organize your photos and keepsakes, some of them from well-known companies like CVS and Walgreens.
8. Have a CD or record collection
Wasn’t it cool back in the day to walk into a shabby-chic apartment and see those shelves of CDs? Wasn’t it a joy to flip through boxes of vinyl records? Napster was the first sign that music could exist as a tiny, virtual MP3 file, and then iPods basically dealt the death blow.
Today, music exists as a digital index on a screen. Purists may love their turntables, but CDs have probably gone the way of the wax cylinder.
9. Make mixtapes
There was something so special about a mixtape. We spent hours finding the right song, then lining up two cassettes to copy a song. So many lovers cemented their relationships using a blank tape and a few dozen favorite albums.
Now, you can drag and drop a digital playlist in seconds.
10. Call a theater to get movie times
Back in the day, you’d dial a theater and listen to its endless-loop recording of movies and times. Sometimes, you’d catch it mid-loop and have to wait for it to start at the beginning to get all the movie.
With Google, type “movie times,” and the search engine will list films based on your location. You can also ask your personal assistant, such as Google Home, what films are playing at the cineplex and what time they’re on, along with tons of other tricks and Easter eggs.
Blockbuster: There’s only one store left in the entire world
Perks: Amazon expands free one-day shipping for Prime members
11. Record your favorite programs on tape
All year, we’d wait for “It’s a Wonderful Life” or “The Wizard of Oz” to pop up on TV. When they did, we’d push a VHS tape into the machine and wait until the proper moment to press “record.”
When TiVo emerged, it streamlined this process by making scheduled recordings even simpler. Now, with streaming services, web archives and easy-to-purchase downloads, the timing of a broadcast barely matters anymore. But as you cut on the cord on traditional cable television, make sure you pick the services that best meet your interests and budget.
12. Watch shows when they are broadcast live
In the same vein, we rarely have to sit in front of the television, eagerly waiting for a “major network event.” Services like Hulu and YouTube convert a huge amount of national television into a digital format, and local news stations log most of their important segments onto their websites.
13. Run to the store for a last-minute gift
Curses! You forgot a Mother’s Day gift! Should you change your whole schedule so you can rush to the store and hurriedly pick something out? If you have Amazon Prime and live in an Amazon hub, there’s no need. You can order same-day delivery and have that gift couriered to your front door.
It’s just one of the many benefits you probably didn’t know Amazon offers. Click here for more than 20 lesser-known perks that come with your Amazon Prime membership.
14. Cut things out of the newspaper
When I was a kid, my dad used to cut out articles from the newspaper and put them in my lunchbox. I miss those days. If Dad were still alive today, he’d do what most of us do: Tap or click a button to share content by text or email. Speaking of sharing information, do you get my newsletters? Dad would like that!
15. Send a handwritten letter
Don’t get me wrong: It’s still wonderful to receive a postcard from faraway places. You might say that email, texting and video conversations have made handwritten letters even more special. But no one is forced to transcribe their thoughts by hand and drop those letters in a mailbox. Heck, nowadays, we use voice dictation to write messages.
16. Looking up the spelling of words in the dictionary
Spellcheck is nearly as old as word processors, and many of us have grown up expecting Microsoft Word to underline our mistakes in red squiggles. But autocorrect takes this concept a step further, guessing what we intended to write and correcting our errors.
This can be handy for clumsy thumbs, but it can be embarrassing when autocorrect guesses wrong.
Rare is the phone booth where you handle a dirty phone and put in a coin to make a call. (Photo: Jefferson Graham)
17. Use a phone booth to make a call
Phone booths are making a comeback in open floorplan offices where there is no privacy. But rare is the phone booth where you handle a dirty phone and put in a coin to make a call. The last holdouts may be an airport or a particular part of town, but even international travelers can usually nab a SIM card the moment they step off the plane. Did you know you can use your cellphone as a walkie-talkie? Here’s how.
18. Carry cash
I remember my dad telling me, “Always carry a ten dollar bill because you never know when you’ll need it.” In a world of debit cards and P2P apps (person-to-person), we rarely have to carry cash anymore. So what happens when your phone is dead, there’s no one around and all you have is a phone booth? Luckily, most public phones in the U.S. are outfitted with credit card strips.
19. Use a travel agent
Travel agents can be essential for elaborate vacations, but for general flights, services like Kayak and CheapFlights have completely transformed how we book our passage. You can compare hundreds of airlines and agencies in seconds for the best deal. If you’d like to save even more, use Google Flights to find the cheapest airfare. Here are five ways Google Flights can really help you save as long as you’re flexible with your travel schedule.
20. Getting your old checks back from the bank every month
Oh, people still write checks, and physical paychecks are still routine methods of payment, but I doubt this antiquated practice will last much longer. Even depositing checks has become digitized, thanks to ATMs that scan the piece of paper and print a facsimile on your receipt.
That said, online banking does open a whole universe of security risks. If you’re not sure whether your phone’s banking app is secure, there are three critical steps you can take.

The 20 best smartphones in the world, Defence Online
source
Henry Nicholls/Reuters
What’s the best smartphone? This list focuses primarily on high-end flagship devices, but the best flagship smartphones don’t have to be the most expensive.
Value plays a huge role in this list, and there’s a mid-range device here that’s well worth considering for more budget-minded buyers.
In fact, the top three phones in this list aren’t the top flagship models everyone expects from Apple or Samsung.
It would be much easier to rank these smartphones based purely on specs and the number of features each offers, but that would mean the most expensive smartphones would always rank in the top three, and they’re not the first phones I’d usually recommend.
One of the biggest factors for me when ranking and recommending a phone is its value in relation to its specs and features. That typically leads me to recommend phones that may have fewer features or a less sleek design than the ultra-premium models that command four-figure price tags.
Indeed, just because a phone has everything and the kitchen sink doesn’t mean you have to buy it – it’s just an option for those who might have a larger budget. The same logic applies to pretty much anything you can buy. Do you pick the most expensive model of everything you buy? If you don’t, the top three will suit you well. If you always go with the top of the line, then you probably already know the phone you want.
But if you haven’t made up your mind, check out our list of the top 20 smartphones you can buy:
20. BlackBerry Key2
source
Avery Hartmans/Defence Online
The BlackBerry Key2 is arguably the most unique smartphone on this list because of its physical keyboard. The trade-off here is you sacrifice some screen space to make way for the keyboard. That might appeal to some BlackBerry enthusiasts, but not so much to regular smartphone users.
Price: $634

19. LG G8
source
Antonio Villas-Boas/Defence Online
Unfortunately for LG, the new LG G8 at its $820 price places it pretty low on this list. It’s comparable to the $750 Galaxy S10e, but without the sleek design and with little to show for the extra $70 you’d spend.
Still, it’s a solid device that checks all the right boxes, but doesn’t excel in any particular thing.
You can find the LG G8 for $700 at Best Buy and B&H Photo, which is what the LG G8 should have been priced at to begin with. I wouldn’t recommend buying it for its full price tag from carriers, however.

18. Moto G7
source
Motorola
Motorola’s Moto G series of smartphones has been our favorite mid-range option ever since they were first released back in 2013, and they’ve only been getting better every generation. Last year’s Moto G6 was a fantastic device that made me forget I was using a $250 phone, and not one that cost more $800.
The new $300 Moto G7 comes with updated specs, design, and even a few rare, out-of-style features that many smartphone users still value.
Price: $300
17. Apple iPhone 7 and 7 Plus
source
Hollis Johnson/Defence Online
The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are now more than 2 years old, but for $450 and $570, respectively, they’re still worthy of your attention.
Apple phones generally offer better apps and a better user experience than their Android counterparts, and the iPhone 7 is no different. The support you get from Apple if something goes wrong is superior to what you get from Android device makers. And unlike on most Android phones, with iPhones you can always get the latest software updates straight from Apple as soon as it releases them.
The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus offer some compelling features, including water-resistance, great cameras that perform well in low light, and powerful processors. The phones also work well with other Apple products, including the company’s wireless headphones, AirPods.
The iPhone 7 Plus’ dual-lens camera system takes pictures with a professional-looking “bokeh” effect, which blurs the background behind your subject. Additionally, the system allows you to zoom in on your subjects; its second camera offers a 2x optical zoom.
Unlike the digital zoom feature found in other cameras, an optical zoom allows you to enlarge an image of your subject without sacrificing picture quality.
iPhone 7 price: $450
iPhone 7 Plus price: $570

16. LG V40
source
Hollis Johnson/Defence Online
The LG V50 was recently announced, but there’s no official release date in the US. If you’re interested in the V40, you might want to wait a little to check out what the V50 has to offer.
The LG V40 was higher up on the list, but since its high price tag hasn’t changed and there are great phones available for significantly less, it’s dropped a few spots.
The LG V40 is a great smartphone with all the usual high-end Android phone features, and it comes with a triple-lens rear camera system that offers users the best versatility in taking photos.
You get a regular wide angle lens, LG’s signature ultra-wide angle lens, and a dedicated optical zoom lens. Meanwhile, phones with dual-lens systems, even LG’s G7, offer you either a zoom lens or an ultra-wide angle lens on top of the regular wide-angle lens that almost all smartphones come with.
The LG V40 is also a top choice for audio enthusiasts that appreciate good sound, as it comes with a higher-quality amplifier inside that makes music sound better through wired headphones.
Price: $950

15. Razer Phone 2
source
Razer
The Razer Phone 2 is marketed as a “gaming” phone, mostly because of its unique display. The Phone can refresh its screen 120 times a second; most phones, by comparison, only refresh their screens 60 times a second. The Phone’s faster refresh rate allows it to offer super smooth gameplay.
The Razer Phone 2’s 120Hz refresh rate doesn’t just make games look good, it affects the entire interface. It works beautifully; everything you do on the phone is ultra smooth in a way never seen before on a smartphone. In fact, Razer may have set the standard for how all phone displays should work – not just those on gaming devices.
But there’s more to the phone than just its screen. It’s also got an eye-catching industrial design that stands out when compared with the sleek and svelte designs of most other Android phones. And Razer added wireless charging, water resistance, and even fancy lighting for its logo on the back for its latest model, too.
The large borders above and below the phone’s screen may look out of step with the borderless designs of other recent phones. But hiding beneath those borders are the loudest and best speakers we’ve heard on any smartphone.
Price: $500
14. iPhone 8
source
Hollis Johnson/Defence Online
The iPhone 8 comes with the now-antiquated iPhone 6-generation design. But it does have a refined glass-and-metal case, a superb camera, and strong performance. With it, Apple supports both wireless and fast charging – features that Android phones have long offered but had been missing from previous iPhones.
Price: $600
Check out the iPhone 8 review »
13. Huawei Mate 20 Pro
source
Antonio Villas-Boas/Defence Online
Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro is the latest in the company’s lineup, and it’s pretty clear why so many people around the world like Huawei smartphones – at least at the high end of the scale.
What we have here is a beautiful device that pleases in many areas, and the US smartphone market is worse off without its wider availability – although you can still buy and use the Mate 20 Pro in the US.
Price: $990
Check out the Huawei Mate 20 Pro review »
12. Samsung Galaxy S9
source
Samsung
The Galaxy S9 is a superb smartphone with almost every feature under the sun. It sports the latest specs, best display, one of the best cameras you can get on a smartphone, a gorgeous design, wireless charging, water resistance, and several other features that make the Galaxy S9 a fool-proof buy.
So why doesn’t it get the top spot on the list? Other smartphones, including its bigger sibling the Galaxy S9 Plus, come with dual-camera systems. On top of that, Samsung’s own version of Android isn’t for everyone.
Price: $500 (Unlocked)
Check out the Galaxy S9 review »
11. iPhone 8 Plus
source
Hollis Johnson/Defence Online
The iPhone 8 Plus is well-worth considering if you want the core of the iPhone experience. It might come with an antiquated design, but it comes with the same chip as the iPhone X, and a great dual-lens camera, where one of the lenses is a dedicated optical zoom lens.
iPhone 8 Plus Price: $700
Check out the iPhone 8 review »
10. iPhone X
source
Hollis Johnson
Apple doesn’t sell the iPhone X anymore, but it’s still widely available at carrier stores for $900.
The iPhone X may run on last year’s A11 chip, but many iPhone X users aren’t noticing much of a difference in performance compared to the iPhone XS with the newer A12 chip. That’s perhaps thanks to iOS 12 and the extra optimization it comes with.
In some respects, it’s actually a better deal than the new iPhone XS, which costs $100 more for few significant upgrades. But if you’re going to pay $900 for a smartphone, those who can afford to might as well spend the extra $100 to get the newer model.
Price: $900 at most carriers
Check out the iPhone X review »
9. Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus
source
Antonio Villas-Boas/Defence Online
The Galaxy S9 Plus is mainly just a bigger version of the regular Galaxy S9, but it has a dual-lens camera system where the secondary lens serves as a 2x optical zoom lens. The Plus model also comes with more RAM than the regular S9, which helps with overall performance speed.
The Galaxy S9 Plus is among my top smartphone picks because it’s a clear example that you don’t need to spend $1,000 – the price of an iPhone XS – to get a top, premium, full-fat smartphone experience. The Galaxy S9 Plus checks off all the boxes and I’d easily recommend it to anyone looking for a new smartphone.
Price: $600

8. iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max
caption

Getty
The $1,000 iPhone XS and $1,100 iPhone XS Max deliver the best of Apple design, performance, and features. They’re technically the best iPhones you can buy, but their position on this list is decided by their high price tags.
If you’re willing and able to spend a minimum of $1,000 on a smartphone, then go for it. Otherwise, I think four figures for a smartphone is too much, especially when it doesn’t come with things like a fast charger, or even a USB-C adapter dongle for your wired headphones.
Both phones have exactly the same features. The main difference is the screen and body size, and that’s up to you whether you prefer smaller or larger phones.
iPhone XS Price: $1,000
iPhone XS Max Price: $1,100
7. Samsung Galaxy Note 9
source
Hollis Johnson/Defence Online
The Galaxy Note 9 is among best Android smartphone that Samsung has released. It has a large 6.4 inch display that looks fantastic with Samsung’s technology. And combined with its high-powered specs, it’s a veritable productivity and multitasking machine. I’ve also recently come to appreciate the S Pen stylus for taking notes at the spur of a thought and for keeping me organized, and it gives me more precision for tasks that I’d usually reserve for a computer.
At $1,000, it’s priced for enthusiasts and power users rather than the casual smartphone user. But if you’re comparing the Galaxy Note 9 to another $1,000 smartphone – the iPhone XS – it’s a better phone.
Price: $800
Check out the Galaxy Note 9 review »
6. Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL
source
Antonio Villas-Boas/Defence Online
The $800 Pixel 3 and $900 Pixel 3 XL have the best smartphone cameras in the business, hands down.
They also run Google’s vision of Android, which is clean, well-designed, and receives Android updates the moment Google releases them. That’s something few Android phones can boast.
The new Pixel 3 phones also come with dual-lens selfie cameras – one of the lenses takes regular selfies, and the other takes ultra-wide angle selfies.
The new Google phones are a little more expensive than I’d like them to be, which wouldn’t actually be a factor had Google’s Nexus devices of yore been so much cheaper.
The only differences between the two phones is the screen size and front design – the Pixel 3 has a more traditional smartphone design, while the Pixel 3 XL has a notched design. The Pixel 3 XL’s notch is unfortunately the worst on this list, but as with every other notch, you get used to it and forget about it pretty quickly. It would be a shame if you ruled out the Pixel 3 XL just because of the notch.
Pixel 3 Price: $800
Pixel 3 XL Price: $900
Check out the Pixel 3 review »
Check out the Pixel 3 XL review »
5. Galaxy S10
The Galaxy S10 is an overhaul in design, performance, and features, all while maintaining the Samsung smartphone formula that makes its phones great.
It’s a fantastic smartphone that comes with more features that those higher up on this list, and I’m especially fond of its ultra-wide camera.
As good as the Galaxy S10 is, it doesn’t pose the best value compared to the Galaxy S10e and other smartphones that come higher on the list.
Galaxy S10 Price: $900
Check out the Samsung Galaxy S10 review »
4. Galaxy S10 Plus
source
Antonio Villas-Boas/Defence Online
The Galaxy S10 Plus is a larger version of the Galaxy S10, and it all comes down to your preference over bigger or smaller phones.
Galaxy S10 Plus Price: $1,000
Check out the Samsung Galaxy S10 review »
3. iPhone XR
The $750 iPhone XR is more appealing than its more expensive counterparts, the $1,000 iPhone XS and $1,100 iPhone XS Max.
In almost every respect, you’re getting the same experience as the iPhone XS series, save for slightly larger bezels, and a lower-resolution LCD display compared to a superior OLED display, and a dual-lens camera. But, in my mind, all that extra stuff from the iPhone XS series isn’t worth an extra $250.
At $750, the iPhone XR is a great value for an iPhone with such a large screen and latest specs. It’s just a shame that there’s no iPhone X-style phone under $700 for those who like smaller displays.
Price: $750
Check out 9 reasons to buy the iPhone XR over the iPhone XS or XS Max »
2. Galaxy S10e
source
Antonio Villas-Boas/Defence Online
The Galaxy S10e poses the best value in the latest Android or Apple smartphones above the $700 mark, period.
It runs on the same processor as the Galaxy S10 that starts at $900, has a brilliant screen, a great camera, an ultrawide camera, a fingerprint sensor that works better than the in-display sensor on the Galaxy S10, and it’s $150 cheaper than the Galaxy S10.
Anyone who wants a small-screen Android phone, or simply one of the best values in smartphones, should put the Galaxy S10e high up at the top of their list.
Price: $750
Check out why you should buy the Galaxy S10e over the regular Galaxy S10 »
1. OnePlus 6T (but you might want to wait a little while)
source
Antonio VIllas-Boas/Defence Online
A new OnePlus device is expected to be announced soon. It might be worth waiting a little while to see what OnePlus comes out with before buying the OnePlus 6T.
The OnePlus 6T doesn’t come with a lot of the features that other phones in this list have, like wireless charging, official water resistance ratings, dedicated zoom or ultra-wide angle lenses, or an ultra-sharp 1440p display. And yet, it earns the top spot on this list.
That’s because it does the things it does so well, like looking good, taking photos, running Android and apps, charging quickly, and lasting a long time on a single battery charge. And it does all those things for a base price tag of $550 compared to the $750+ price tags of smartphones above.
I never missed any of the extra features from other, more expensive top smartphones while using the OnePlus 6T. If I were to buy a new smartphone, this would be the one for its excellent design, performance, and value.
The OnePlus 6T is also the first OnePlus phone to be sold by a US carrier – T-Mobile – and it’s also the first OnePlus phone to be compatible with Verizon’s network.
Price: $550 for 6 GB RAM 128 GB model
Price at T-Mobile: $580 for 8 GB RAM 128 GB model

i really fucking hate doing this but kind of necessary rn. i need money for the bus and light rail for the next week and few days, along with being able to afford some food and necessities. i live with my dad, to which we’ve had our last really big fight and he’s not involved in anything with me anymore. i have to save enough to move out, because he told me my options were to move back in with my very very abusive mother who had her custody revoked or to see if my uncle down in florida with no room would want me. he isn’t buying groceries for the house, and i’m making everything i possibly can stretch. however, i’m starting to run low after having to do this for a couple weeks now. also running low on hygienic products like soap, toothpaste, tampons, etc., basically despite still living here (temporarily) i have nothing of my own. i’m 16 so it’s going to be reaaaally hard trying to find a place with or without roommates even if i do have enough money. if that’s the case, then i have to essentially start over and move into my bf’s already crowded house where i HAVE to regularly buy groceries to pitch in. im starting therapy up again, too, and have other medical appointments coming up that call for some copays (especially with medication). plus trying to enroll in some correspondence classes online through the summer and next year so i can graduate on time. basically i’m fucked until i can find another job. literally even a dollar would be amazing because that’s one less dollar that i have to pay that i don’t have. and if anyone’s interested, pretty much the few things i can (and have been trying to) sell is my old iphone 6, guitar, and an old but still good condition cruiser/skateboard. i also have a lot of clothes i NEED to get rid of that would take way too much time if i put them on depop. so if anyone’s interested in that feel free to PM me because i feel shitty not being able to provide a service or hand made goods in exchange.

even if you can’t donate, reblogging this would help out more than you know, so i can have a place to go, food, necessities, and to have my physical and mental health tended to.

Niagara Falls Was Not What I Assumed It Would Be. – Autumn Aquarius Adventures
“Amazing”, “Breath-taking”, “awe-inspiring”, are just a couple of of the phrases people use to explain the splendor and majesty of Niagara Falls. It is a position high on a lot of people’s “Travel Bucket List,” and fortunately for me, Niagara Falls was higher on my mom’s list, if not, I really don’t imagine I would have seen these iconic waterfalls the same, if at all.
I am guilty of being a person of these persons that forgets the astounding matters to see in their personal “back yard” so to talk, and I thought of Niagara Falls as a location to check out “someday” right after I check out much off fairy tale castles, or ancient miracles overseas. I think that in my head, observing the a lot of photographs, vacation channel specials, and blogs featuring Niagara Falls created me imagine that I’d “seen it” and thus could possibly be underwhelmed if I put in all that income to really see it in human being.
I was utterly and wholly mistaken simply because Niagara Falls in individual is everything but “underwhelming.” Even staying crammed amid the throngs of travellers on the Hornblower did not diminish how unbelievable it was to get soaked by the mists of Horseshoe Falls (the most significant of the a few waterfalls in Niagara). Descending 150 ft down below and viewing the Falls via 130 yr-outdated tunnels was what made Journey Powering the Falls so memorable and enjoyment. Nonetheless, absolutely nothing compares to my preferred: Cave of the Winds where you can get up near and particular with the two waterfalls on the American facet all although donning an correctly stylish outfit consisting of specially made sandals and a brilliant poncho.
But the ideal detail about this vacation to Niagara falls for me was serving as a tour guideline/ photographer/driver for my mother and aunties. Seeking for and booking reasonably priced flights and lodges, looking into the “must-dos,” discovering fantastic sites to eat, capturing fantastic pictures, generating guaranteed absolutely everyone was receiving the most out of their excursion, and navigating by means of border checks and unfamiliar streets even though continue to trying to be a vacationer myself was A Whole lot, and rather demanding at times, but it made for wonderful reminiscences and an unforgettable journey to a great put. I’m so glad we went, and that I was mistaken about my original (and pretty naive) thoughts on seeing this kind of a definitely wonderful force of character.
Check out out a online video of our vacation in this article.
If Niagara Falls is on your record right here are some strategies:
Make it possible for your self time to see both sides.
I considered 5 days would be as well considerably time but there is a good deal to see and do on both the Canadian and American sides as both of those are really diverse. Numerous folks choose the Canadian aspect since you get a total panoramic look at of all three waterfalls. I personally prefer the American facet due to the fact I really feel closer to the Falls, and it’s much more scenic and all-natural. Crossing the borders is somewhat fast and uncomplicated so prolonged as you have your passport helpful.
Perspective from New York side
View from Canadian aspect.
2. Remain in a lodge near to the Falls.
Lots of strolling, plenty of folks, lots to do. It was so nice to have a place so near that I could acquire a fast nap in. I scored excellent offer on motels.com and booked a home overlooking the Falls at the Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview Hotel and Suites for $109 a night. This was 1 of the most inspiring views I have at any time woken up to:
3. Never miss out on Niagara Falls light-weight up at night.
Through the day, there are swarms of folks going to and fro attempting to get that great photograph by the Falls. This photo beneath was taken at all around 11pm on the Canadian facet when the bulk of holidaymakers ended up both sleeping or savoring the close by stores and on line casino. The Falls are just as fascinating by night time with fewer individuals. Also, the shades change! So quite.
4. Make a reservation for supper at the Skylon Tower.
There are tons of very good, decently priced dining places all over the Falls location to opt for from for a swift chunk or hearty food, but do not pass up out on dining at the Skylon Tower. In addition to possibly delicious high-quality eating in their renowned Revolving Dining home or an array of yummy dishes to opt for from at their Summit Suite Buffet, guests are dealt with to an incredible aerial watch of the Niagara waterfalls.
SO Cute! My Coke arrived in a mini Skylon Tower !
5. Consider purchasing The Discovery Go (American facet) and/or Adventure Move (Canadian Facet).
If you are paying out an overall working day on either aspect, purchasing a pass that groups jointly multiple attractions is a great possibility. The selling prices are not too negative considering you get a number of well-known sights as effectively as transportation. It saved us a ton of time, and after all time is dollars!

3. InstaGC
I really like InstaGC as an easy way to earn Google Play credit. I’ve used this before and had no issues redeeming my credit for gift cards.
You will earn credits for all of these activities within the app:
Browsing the web as you normally do by conducting web searches
Take surveys
Online shopping
Watching videos
Referring friends (110 additional points or 1/10 of a $10 gift card)

InstaGC

Gift Card Granny
Pro tip: I will often look to Gift Card Granny for date night ideas. Just recently I was able to find a $50 gift card to P.F. Changs for $30 on. That’s a 40% discount for date night!
5. Get Free Credits for Registering Your Chromecast Device
First off, if you don’t have a Chromecast device I highly recommend buying one! They make it simple and easy to stream your favorite shows and movies onto your TV without having to waste money on cable.
Download and install Google Home on your Android device to see what offers are available when registering your Chromecast device. I’ve seen different deals but they can range anywhere from $6-$25. If you currently log on and see a smaller deal and aren’t in a big rush, wait for a larger credit in the future.
Plus, Google lets you register more than one device. If you have several devices in your family make sure to register each one for more Google Play credits.
Remember, all you need to do is register your device(s), simple as that!
Google Home for Chromecast
6. Register Your Samsung Devices to Receive to Earn Google Play Credits
If you have a Samsung device (or devices) you are also in luck! All you need to do is register your device directly with Samsung. Like the Chromecast device activation, the credit amounts can vary. When I signed up in the past I received a free $25 in Google Play credit.
Plus, Samsung offers Google Play gift cards for free when you purchase a new device like the Pixel or Google Home. Also, be sure to check the registration email regularly as Samsung is constantly offering other great deals.
Register Samsung Devices
7. Juno Wallet
While the first three ways are pretty straightforward there are a ton of apps now to earn Google play credit. Junowallet is more work than some of the other apps below but it also has more ways to earn Google Play credit. These include taking surveys, downloading apps, and watching videos.
But they have another feature that will allow you to earn even more credit by making calls and snapping mystery rewards. If you do receive a mystery reward make sure you act fast as they disappear in 10 seconds!
You are also rewarded for sharing this app with as many friends as possible. They have three different levels so the more friends you bring in the more you are rewarded.
Once you have enough points you can redeem them for Google Play credits. They also let you use the points to enter into Juno Rewards raffles for more deals and other retail gift cards like Amazon.
Juno Wallet
8. Google Opinion Rewards
This is one of the best and easiest ways to earn Google Play credit. There is no need to download other apps or refer friends. The Google Opinion Rewards app should come pre-installed on your Android device but if not, make sure to download it for free from the Android store.
Once you sign up for an account they will alert you of surveys to take and receive credit once completed. While the earnings aren’t much, usually average .25 cents, the questions are simple and don’t take long to answer (usually 3-10 questions, depending on length). Longer surveys can pay up to $1 and don’t take much more of your time.
Redeeming them is the simplest and easiest way as well! The credits are applied instantly to your Google Play account so you don’t need to wait to redeem. Plus, you don’t’ have to worry about transferring gift cards or redeeming codes like some of the other options below.
If you prefer simple and easy to earn Google Play credits I highly recommend this option. Download the app and try to take one survey per day. You won’t need to watch videos, download more apps, or play games that you have no interest in. While some surveys may be small you can easily make $10 – $20 per month in your spare time.

9. Feature Points
Like other apps, Feature Points, rewards you by playing games and trying out other apps for free. They partner with developers to get more exposure to new apps and allow you beta test before they hit the market.
You can identify bugs, play the games, use the apps, and refer friends to receive a different prize. The more friends you refer the more you are rewarded as you receive 50% of the points each one of them earns. They have several redemption options as well but one of them is Google Play gift cards.

10. Gift Box
Gift Box is similar to Boom Gift and allows you earn Google Play gift cards for your prizes. Some of their games are fun and super easy to use including Spin the Wheel.
If you visit the app each day you will earn points and can earn even more by downloading other apps, referring your friends, and watching sponsored videos. Plus, the app is highly rated in the Google Play store so you know that you are working with a trusted app.

11. FreeMyApps
This app is nearly identical to FeaturePoints as you are rewarded for playing games, downloading apps, and testing out other features. You can earn more points if you join their social media contents and refer friends to the program as well.
Another benefit is that they are a trusted app that has already paid out of $27 million in gift cards! Plus, FreeMyApps has a massive selection of gift cards that you can choose from other than Google Play credits. You can select CVS, Amazon, in-game currencies and many others. And if you are feeling generous you can also choose to donate your credit to several charity options as well.

AppNana is another great app to help you get free Google play credits. The app is available for both iPhone and Android users. Each time you download and play apps you receive what are known as “nanas.” Once you reach the “nana” threshold you can redeem them for free Google play credits.
If you log into your account each day you will receive 400 points per day automatically! If you play games like Candy Crush or other Facebook games you will receive even more nanas (points). You can redeem your points in Google Play gift cards, iTunes gift cards, Amazon, and others. Or, if you want to keep them on the app you can redeem on the AppNana store as well.

13. WhaFF Rewards
Whaff Rewards is only available to Android devices and similar to the apps previously mentioned. If you just download the app you automatically get credit unlike other apps. An easy way to earn more credit with WhaFF rewards is to connect it with your Facebook account. Some apps will be more valuable than others with a general price range of .10-.70 cents per app you download.

Unlike the other apps where you download or play games, Gameflip simply sells gift cards for discounted prices, including Google Play. This isn’t really earning Google Play credits but buying them at a discount.

16. Bing Rewards
Bing Rewards is a reward system from Microsoft that will let you earn rewards for using Bing search engine. It’s not nearly as good as Google Chrome in my opinion but it’s an easy way to get Amazon gift cards. With your Amazon gift cards then you can buy a Google Play gift card. Depending on the seller, you might also receive a discount as they rarely sell them for the full amount.
This method isn’t as easy to earn Google Play credits as some of the others but it still works great. Quick disclaimer, you do need to be at least 13 years old to become a member of the Bing Rewards.

17. Gift Wallet
Gift Wallet is a little different from most of the other options but still a great way to earn Google Play credit. This is a rewards app that focuses on helping you redeem offers but sometimes you do need to pay for the discounted gift cards (unlike other apps).
They also reward you for sharing the app on your social media platforms and if you get someone to sign up directly through your link. Once you reach the limit you will receive these discounts directly to your inbox.

18. Use Your Costco Membership
The benefits of being a Costco member never seem to end! If you are not already a member I highly recommend joining as you can get discounts on so many items in store and online. Not to mention the cheap food court!
One of the perks of shopping at Costco is the massive discount you receive on gift cards. I’ve personally restaurant gift cards to eat at my favorite restaurants for instant savings. Normally they are something like $70 for $100 worth of service with no limit to the amount you can buy. One of those gift cards is Google Play!
In the past, Costco ran a huge promotion where they offered $50 for $100 worth of Google Play gift cards. The best part is that they are gift cards, not promotions which means there is no expiration date!
The annual membership to Costco is only $50-$100 depending on which package you select. With this low annual cost it makes the membership nearly pay for itself if you plan on buying these gift cards consistently. These are also great ideas to use for holidays and birthdays gifts!

How to Redeem Your Google Play Codes
Congrats, you now have plenty of ways to earn Google Play credit. If you ever get bored watching more sponsored videos or playing games remember why you are doing it — free credit!
Here’s how to redeem your hard-earned Google Play credit:
Sign into your account (or create one) at play.google.com.
Find the app or game you want to purchase and click on the link.
Once you are on the next page click on the buy button.
The final page will show your different payment options. Choose your Google Play credit or enter your gift card balance to complete your purchase.
As I’ve mentioned, some of the apps will apply the credit directly to your account while others might give you points to redeem for gift cards. Some may even require a third step by gifting you Amazon gift cards which you then need to buy Google Play gift cards.
What if I use an iOS Device?
While the majority of these ways are only for Android devices you can still take advantage of them with an iOS device. You aren’t able to download the Google play store to your device but you can still download specific apps like Google Play books, music, movies & TV.
How to Avoid Google Play Credit Scams
Anytime you are trying to receive a discount or free gift cards know that scammers are always close. Don’t get caught in a Google Play credit scam!
When researching this post I found a ton of different scams and encourage you to be careful about where you are providing your information online.
Often times these Google Play scams are from Google Play credit generators. They will claim to generate you a code (sometimes instantly) to receive free credit on your account.
Usually, they will just send you an email or shady attachment that can steal your information (or install malware which will slow down your device). I advise you to stay away from all Google Play credit Generators for your own safety and they never work.
Get Started Earning Google Play Credit Now!
As you can tell there is no shortage of ways to get free Google Play credit with these sites and apps. Some of these apps might take time on a regular basis but you can use a few of these methods only once and receive a big credit. Although it can require time, you can think of earning free Google Play credit as another way to make money from an app on your phone!
I’d recommend that you start by registering your devices (if you have any), purchase a Costco membership, and then do some of the apps. A ton of these apps and games reward you for the behavior you are already doing, which makes it really easy to earn Google Play credits. I would use all of these before actually spending money on a Google Play card.
While these are great ways to earn credit make sure to be very careful where you enter your information as Google Play scams are everywhere. The fake websites look very real but the codes never work! Stay alert but use these methods to never spend a dime in the Google Play store again.
