Someone stands at the end of the alleyway, blocking his escape, so he turns back around, stumbles over his own feet into one of the buildings. Breath catches in his chest, terror holding him tight as he stares ahead, at Rem, held in his father’s grip.

“You leave a messy trail, Nakoa.” Michael’s voice is quiet, calm, and Nakoa hears footsteps behind him, encroaching on his space, unsurprised when he feels the cold metal of a gun press against his neck. “Nice to see you again.”

“Let him—” Nakoa says, but the gun presses against his neck, harder, cuts him off, and he swallows. Waits.

“Rude to interrupt your father.” Michael, after a beat, does release Rem—only to send him reeling against the brick with a fist to his stomach. “Tell me, Nakoa. Did you think I would let you leave?”

Nakoa says nothing, eyes trained on Rem. Michael sighs, and, as Rem is bent over, coughing, knees him in the stomach. This time, Rem goes down. “Answer me.”

Yes; Nakoa figured, it’s been long enough since he heard about the secrets, since he’s been involved in any of Michael’s work; he should have been safe. He should have been fucking safe. And if it weren’t for Michael knowing someone fucking everywhere, a network of I-know-a-guy, Nakoa would have been.

He should have convinced Rem to fly out of the country. Maybe remote Russia isn’t so bad.

“No,” he lies, because Michael shouldn’t want to waste resources, not time or money, on Nakoa. He steps forward, ignoring Rem behind him, coughing.

Michael’s taller than he is, though not by much; Nakoa slouches. Rem still towers over him.

Rem could take him, if he was smart about it.

“I thought I was clear,” Michael says. “You are to stay with me. This is what we do, Nakoa. I can’t have my only son disappear, after all, can I? Even if he is a miserable excuse for one.”

Rem stumbles to his feet, croaks out a, “Hey, asshole—” before Michael turns, gun still in hand, and Nakoa can’t turn away fast enough, waiting for the sound of a gunshot that doesn’t come.

Instead, Michael winds up and slams the butt of the pistol into Rem’s head, turning back before Rem has even hit the ground. Blood surfaces from A gas on Rem’s forehead immediately, runs down his face, and… 

Nakoa watches Rem, tunnel visioned. Is he okay. Is he okay there’s a lot of blood already and his chest is rising and falling but is it too much? Not enough—

“Can someone take that one back to the car,” Michael asks, “handcuff him and put him in the trunk?”

It’s not a request. But Nakoa still says, “He needs help. You—”

“Shut up.”

“He could be—”

“Easier if he is,” Michael says. “I’d rather not have to cut off his attempts at a Disney rescue. You are mine, you know. No other man you throw yourself will change that fact.” Michael pulls Nakoa’s chin up, forces him to look Michael in the eye. “It’s best for you at home. You keep poor company.”

Nakoa keeps poor company. That’s almost laughable. “Pot calling the kettle,” Nakoa says. “I promise I won’t say shit, okay? For fuck’s sake, Rem doesn’t even know.”

He wonders maybe if Michael knows that, or if he doesn’t care. If his sole concern is of Nakoa giving out pieces of Michael’s secrets, or if it’s…

Nakoa swallows. Waits. 

Michael stares at him, expression blank, before he says, “You know, Nakoa. You haven’t proven yourself very trustworthy. You ran away from home. What am I meant to think?” He steps forward. “No. I think it’s best for you to stay with me.” He glances back towards Rem, still unconscious on the ground. “Your… friend, too.”

If Michael knows, he doesn’t day anything. Instead, he snaps his fingers, and the gun at Nakoa’s throat disappears. He tries to leave, get away, grab for Rem and shake him awake, but his before he can, his wrists are bound by zip ties.

Michael retreats down the alleyway, lighting a cigarette, and Nakoa opens his mouth—unsure what he’s going to say—but doesn’t get to call after him. Instead, there’s a burst of pain at the back of his skull, and the world goes dark.

And cannabis just kept getting legal-er and legal-er all year, including in Vermont, Michigan, Missouri, Utah, and the entire nation of Canada (see more below). Election Night also ushered in new, pro-legalization governors in so-far not legalized Illinois, Connecticut, Maine, Minnesota, and New Mexico, and also saw the defeat of staunch cannabis opponent Pete Sessions, who’s been blocking cannabis legislation for years.

And then you scroll a little further down and discover that the new Farm Bill is going to legalize hemp farming in the United States for the first time in eighty years (huzzah!). It’s honestly hard to know what to think these days. Perhaps my new year’s resolution for 2019 will be more rolling, less scrolling! But until then, here are the buzzes and bummers 2018 had to offer.

Buzz: Vermont Legalizes Adult-Use Cannabis

Less than two weeks into 2018, Vermont lawmakers gave final approval to a bill legalizing adult-use cannabis, and the governor subsequently signed it into law, making it the first state to end prohibition through the legislature rather than a direct vote of citizens.

Bummer: Big Tobacco Makes Moves in Cannabis

It’s no longer a question of if Big Tobacco and the booze barons will enter the cannabis market, but rather how aggressively they’ll move in and how much market share they’ll manage to gobble up.

Neither corporate giant lifted a finger to help legalize cannabis or bring justice to the millions of people who’ve been incarcerated or had their lives disrupted as a result of prohibition.

In August, Constellation Brands (brewers of Corona beer) spent $4 billion to massively up their stake in Canopy Growth, which in 2014 became the first publicly traded cannabis company in North America, and now lists on both the New York Stock Exchange and the Toronto Stock Exchange.

And then in December, Altria (formerly Phillip Morris) made a $1.8 billion investment in Cronos, a Canadian cannabis company, which includes an option to take a controlling stake in the future. As first reported by Leafly, Altria has “over the past five years quietly patented dozens of devices that could be used to consume marijuana, a review of public documents at the US Patent and Trademark Office shows.”

Important to note: Neither corporate giant lifted a finger to help legalize cannabis or bring justice to the millions of people around the world who’ve been incarcerated or had their lives disrupted as a result of prohibition. And Altria in particular comes to the table with a long track record of corporate malfeasance, which is why they changed their name in the first place.

Buzz: Bong Wick Fighting Crime

On September 6, four men burst into the Recreational Cannabis Farmers Market in Shannonville, Canada, spraying a can of bear mace and screaming “get down.” The plan was allegedly to rob the place blind, but as they say in the action movies, these punks picked the wrong dispensary.

Despite being outnumbered and taken by surprise, John Wick—the store’s clerk—reached down below the register, pulled out a borosilicate glass bong, and prepared to defend his turf. As captured in the store’s surveillance video, the four cowardly criminals were clearly no match for a good guy with a bong.

Bummer: The Cost of Legal CBD

What would you call someone who spends $32,500 a year on cannabis that doesn’t get you high? GW Pharmaceuticals will soon call them customers, because that’s how much patients are estimated to shell out for Epidiolex, a cannabis-derived treatment for seizure disorders that was approved in June by the FDA, rescheduled by the DEA in September (though only Epidiolex was rescheduled, not CBD itself) and is currently moving rapidlythrough phase III clinical trials.

There’s nothing to justify the sky-high price (about $90 per day) beyond the cost of research and development to win FDA approval.

Marinol (synthetic THC) has been available by prescription since 1986, and other synthetic cannabinoid drugs are in the works, but Epidiolex is the first plant-derived pharmaceutical to reach the US market. It was fast tracked through the approval process in response to parents of severely epileptic children pushing for a way to legally use CBD, after seeing it work wonders for children profiled in a 2013 CNN documentary called Weed, hosted by Dr. Sanjay Gupta.

Bringing pharmaceutical CBD to market will make it available to patients in every state (with a doctor’s prescription), allow it to be covered by health insurance, and guarantee a product that’s produced to high standards.

But there’s nothing to justify the sky-high price (about $90 per day) beyond the cost of research and development to win FDA approval and Big Pharma’s insatiable thirst for profits. No wonder GW has been working behind the scenes to lobby for a de-facto monopoly on legal CBD.

Bethany Sherman, formerly the owner of OG Analytics, a cannabis testing lab in Oregon, filed a defamation lawsuit in October against online anti-fascist activists after they exposed her alleged ties to local white nationalists.

She claims that when Antifa activists publicized her posts to social media and message boards, they took them “out of context.” Then she hired an attorney to defend her who is a self-described white nationalist.

Allegations against Sherman included that she baked swastika-shaped cookies for a celebration of Adolf Hitler’s birthday (which is also, coincidentally, 4/20). In late November, Blunt + Moore, the first dispensary to get permitted as part of Oakland, California’s far reaching cannabis equity program, held their grand opening in a small, sleek retail space just across the highway from Oracle Arena, home of the Golden State Warriors.

The shop’s proprietor, Alphonso T Blunt, Jr., is a 31-year-old, fourth generation Oakland resident who started selling cannabis when he was just 16. He qualified for the equity program based on a previous felony conviction, and having lived in a neighborhood disproportionately targeted for cannabis arrests.

Blunt told Leafly’s David Downs he could never have made it into the legal industry without the program’s assistance in getting licensed and attracting investors.

“Had you asked me even a year ago, I thought it wouldn’t happen. I can’t even put into words how it feels.”

But reviews of the equity program have been mixed, with critics arguing it so far has a disappointing track record for actually bringing equity-approved businesses online.

 I have always wanted to come to the turquoise-coloured lakes. Who wouldn’t want to experience those lakes? To be honest, I had no idea about the Rockies. It does make sense owning to the fact that it is a big country. The remarkable feature would be the Rockies. So, some geography lesson here.

 Back then, a long long time ago. There were no rocks or mountains or the Rocky Mountains in Canada. Something happens to the mother Earth causing a tectonic subduction. Simple understanding, there were two regions of land slipped onto each other, one side is the upper side and one side settled at the bottom. And dang, the upper side produced the magnificent rocky mountains and they tend to get very tall. The reason why I said they are magnificent because when you are traveling across all land in Canada, all you can see are prairies, nothingness lands maybe some lakes in Ontario and that’s that. But, once you came across the Alberta, Banff, Jasper and their vicinity, suddenly you could see tall, real tall mountains made of rocks. They are so tall that even in the summer when the temperature gets to 30°C or above, the summits are still covered in the snow. And we called that glaciers.

 I never thought I would arrive here. The journey is so long from Ottawa, taking days by train and costing a lot of money by plane. This year, I got the opportunity to realize my dream. It seems hard at first but when you are at it, you only thought why did you not doing this earlier. One thing I discovered about life, you did not know how it is until you feel it yourself. Maybe that’s why we shouldn’t judge people but we all know that we do it all the times. Okay now back to the travel journey.

 As normal as it could be, we arrived late at Edmonton station. We canceled the Airbnb we booked earlier thinking we could save some money by staying at the train station the rest of our arrival night. But, as I got 25 off for my Airbnb, we used that to stay at the new place and only paid 5CAD for a night. By doing that, we got enough rest, slept on a comfy bed and most importantly we got to take a shower. The host was also a really nice lady because she allowed a flexible check-in and check-out times.

 At noon, we check-out and took the bus to the Hertz place. I did not know why, I might be biased but it almost seems like every time we need to walk, carrying our heavy bag packs, that day must be a real hot summer day. But, we managed it all the time. Or at least I did. And we took the car, stopped by McDonald's to get Fillet-O-Fish and damn, a SPRITE, never thought of getting a Sprite from McD. We headed to Cochrane. It took about 3 hours before we took a quick detour to buy fried chicken. You see, there was not many of eatery selling good fried chicken. So, when we know one, we would kill for it.

 We arrived in Cochrane at about 6, we rested in the house, probably the biggest, beautiful, high-end furnished Airbnb we ever had to. The kitchen was filled with KitchenAid, Lacostina, and JohnsonJohnson. This is my dream house, I told Ed. And as always, he took my word as serious as he pretends to act seriously. You got what I mean? That evening, after we had wash-ups and filled our stomach. We went to the Lake Vermilion with the view of Mount Vermont. Very confusing these two. We planned to see the sunset but the memory card on Ed’s camera did not work out. He got very pissed plus the mosquitos there made us leave earlier. We went to the Banff town and drove back to Cochrane.

 I thought it was nice that we drove all the way up the day before to only figure out the memory card did not work. What if we found about the faulty memory card when we were in Moraine Lake, it would be a shame to our descendants. Their great grandparents went to Moraine Lake and took the pictures using iPhone SE when they got a Sony Alpha NEX-5R in their car. Like what. I would not let that happen.

 So, the next day, we cooked. Nope, I cooked and we packed our lunch. I took a long time to cook because I was not used to the kitchen. And apparently, Ed got mad at me for that. The morning did not start well so the rest of the day follows suit. We pretended like nothing was wrong but we are the two young human who has big egos to protect. We were bickering here and there over the small things. The great thing about Ed which did not work with other person is that we never hide our frustration towards each other. And we always work out in the end. Fast to argue, fast to heal.

 So, enough with the emotional experiences. We went hiking at first stop at the Johnston Canyon and the almost 2 hours hike brought us to the place I wanted to go. The so-called cave has a very scenic view except there were too many people there. Apparently, the two things that made it a scenic view is the small waterfall and the sort of small but tall rock in front of it. I almost cried when I see the view. It is beyond beautiful. Imagine a turquoise waterfall with brownish hill across it. And you can take pictures with the background of these two. Again, Ed blamed/mad at me for wearing jeans when he got the chance to ask me to change at home. To his defense, he thought I would take a long time to change a pair of pants. Did he think I am a millipede that has 1000 pair of legs?

 Okay, I will stop babbling about Ed. He sometimes does not make sense. Okay, after that we drove an additional one hour to the Emerald Lake. It is in Yoho National Park so I am officially have been to the three legendary National Parks in Alberta but Yoho is in BC but whatever. Yeayyy. The view was very nice with a turquoise color lake and green mountains as the background. But we were chasing times so we only spent a while here. Ed got mad at me again for not taking his picture perfectly before the battery ran out. I could not comprehend why he did not charge his camera’s battery the night before when he knew he will be using the camera all day long. 

 We drove down and on the way to the Moraine Lake, we stopped at the Natural Bridge and took some photos of it. It was plain when we saw it before our eyes but exquisite when we saw it again in the photo library. Hard to appreciate things before our eyes ain’t it. Next, The Moraine Lake. This lake is kind of personal to me. I was really wanted to come here because mum and I talked about this lake before I flew to Canada. She said I should see it because she really wanted to see it. And, when I see the Valley of the Ten Peaks, the thing I could only do is praying so I could bring my mum here one fine day. I imagine her smiling, seeing the view beside me. I personally think the lake is my lake, for her stunning view and for the trust my mum put in me.

 Next, we went to Lake Louise. It is the most famous of all lakes. The lake is turquoise in colour with some mountain views at the background. It was beautiful but it is just that. I wish I could spend more time in those lakes but we don’t have much time. I would not let Ed drove till late night because he needed to drive again tomorrow morning and it’s going to be a long drive. If only I could drive, I don’t know how many times that phrase has been whispering in my mind all this time. But I don't want to kill someone due to my driving incompetence.

 Banff National Park visit is a lifetime experience. No matter how advanced our camera, it could never do justice to the views we see along the way. The Rocky Mountains, the glaciers, the stunning colour lakes and everything between them. I wish I could come here again one day. Perhaps, with my mum. The next day, Ed alone drove up to Edmonton and I met the lovebird, Fatin and Amirul. They both Ed’s CPU mate

 The four of us took a little stroll around Edmonton town. We went to the West Edmonton Mall, the biggest mall in Canada yet is still smaller than Sunway Pyramid according to Amirul. The reason why it is so big because it has a water park, a theme-park and seal show in it. So, above all things in Edmonton, it is good to make new friends and I am looking forward to meeting these two in the future. We took the train back to Toronto and it has been three days on the train and we are still not arriving in Toronto. Would never ride this train again in the future. But, might only be The Canadian. I still want to go to Niagara Falls.
