The Narrator's perspective only gets more horrifying the longer you think about it. Like, imagine being an Echo of yourself—one of many, all made to serve a very particular purpose and knowingly living on borrowed time, if 'living' is even the right word for your current state of pseudo-existence.

You've inherited the mission of a dead man—it's literally the only thing left that you can do before fading, so you sure as hell better believe in it; the alternative would be unbearable. Only you keep failing. With every loop that you don't remember, your lack of agency in this situation becomes starker—you can influence small things, sure, but it becomes increasingly clear that you have no real power, no matter how personally invested you are in the events unfolding in front of you. You are, after all, only an Echo. You've forfeited the right to meaningfully engage with the world.

Worse—every loop you're made aware of is another time you've failed, with unimaginable consequences, though you had no control over these previous iterations of yourself and can't even learn from their mistakes. Everyone around you is operating on a shared perception of reality that you are not part of, will never be part of. After a few repetitions, you are, ironically, the least informed person in the room. All you have left to go on is an evidently outdated script. At the same time, everyone else is experiencing a contiguous version of you, comprised of parts that are, in some sense, also you, while at the same time existing at a complete remove from your current perception of self. Whatever you don't know you did—that's you now. You are, after all, only an Echo. You've forfeited the right to define your own identity, never mind know what it is.

Even worse—this has trapped you within a stagnant hell of your own creation. Nothing you say or do really matters in terms of your own self (the rest of the world is a separate issue entirely). Anything you've come to believe—say, for totally hypothetical example, that you were wrong actually and your envisioned paradise is really a hell beyond any you had the capacity to envision—has about as much permanence as a drawing in the sand. 'You' will continue, exactly as you were, no matter how much you might like to change your behavior. Every possible future has already been set in stone. You are, after all, only an Echo. You've forfeited the right to say anything you haven't already said.

For some reason, no part of any of this has made you feel more comfortable and at peace with the general concept of finality.

The really, truly absolute worst part, though?

There is no one for you to blame but yourself. And that's exactly what turns your story into such a tragedy.

Only Friends: Can Ray be Redeemed? Is Sand the Solution?

I know Ray has upset a lot of people in Episode 8. I do find it really fascinating how quickly the tide has turned on him, especially when you compare his actions to those of our villains of the first arc: Boston and Top. Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I still choose to believe that Ray does care. He's hugely misguided but not heartless.

Let me firstly preface that none of what I'm about to say excuses Ray's behaviour but is an attempt to unpack why I still hold hope.

A child lost with no anchor

Ray is emotionally immature (which as cliché as it sounds, is a direct product of his upbringing - or lack thereof). He largely operates on basic needs, as a child would: 'I want. I need'. It's all based on serving the self. He seems wildly incapable of thinking very far beyond that. Like a child, he can barely take care of himself, let alone anyone else. He's pretty helpless on his own in a lot of respects. Most people grow out of this. Through knocks and hardship, we learn the world doesn't revolve around us and how to equip ourselves with healthy and appropriate means to navigate through life. Ray however, still seems to be stuck in his infantile box.

I often joke that Ray is a bit feral, but there is some truth to that. Ray's been left to his own devices for the majority of his life. So it's no surprise he's developed this 'me against the world' attitude which is volatile and defensive, but ultimately keeps him caged in said box.

These traits are abundantly apparent in his relationship with Mew. Ray is the vehicle for Mew's self-destruction, but all he sees is the exhilaration of having a 'partner in crime', someone to be in 'cahoots with'. Like a pair of naughty school kids getting into mischief, rather than an adult partnership. Ray is all about immediate gratification over long term fulfilment because (as children do), they don't possess the wisdom and experience to think ahead. Ray seems unable to grasp repercussions or consequences in his decision making. It's always act first, think second.

To put it simply, Ray hasn't been taught boundaries and how to respect them. He just gets criticised for crossing them which doesn’t help him learn. No one has had the patience to teach him why and how. To guide, to steer, to direct, to mentor. To educate rather than scold. Prevention rather than cure. As a result, everyone around Ray serves to clean up his messes rather than equip him with the ability to not create them in the first place. He falls into patterns of behaviour that no one has seriously attempted to break which has only amplified with adulthood. The longer those habits prevail, the harder they are to change.

Does Ray harbour ill-will or bad intent?

Is Ray the worst? In my opinion, no. (Not yet anyway - I might eat my words later, who knows). I've said this somewhere before but intent makes all the difference when judging someone's actions. Choosing to actively cause harm whilst being fully conscious of the impact versus triggering damage to occur as a symptom of your behaviour is vastly different. This is where Ray and Boston differ. Boston acts without remorse, he purposely and calculatingly makes choices that will cause the maximum degree of suffering. Whereas Ray's a loose cannon. He leaves a trail of destruction where he goes, due to a lack of control and means to channel how he feels in a constructive manner. Boston's victims are targets, whereas Ray's victims are collateral.

I don't think Ray means to purposely hurt or harm the people he cares about. Because in doing so, he'll push them away - which is precisely what he doesn't want. (Though saying that, Ray doesn't seem to give as much of a damn if it's people he isn't invested in, such as Top). Ray's world consists of what Ray needs. It's not that he doesn't care about a single person besides himself, he's just so wrapped up in his own needs to even gauge the bigger picture.

When others do point out to Ray that he's hurt them, he does tend to look guilty and taken aback, as if he's thinking, 'But I didn't know. No one told me. I had no idea my actions would cause you to be upset'. Painful levels of ignorance. But I also see a huge amount of internalised frustration. 'But why? Why didn't anyone explain this to me? How was I to know?'

Ray is capable of showing remorse, of displaying guilt. He's not cold-blooded. Anyone who can demonstrate compassion is capable of redemption. Ray is seen to be genuinely appreciative and grateful when people are good to him. He's fiercely protective over people he cares about. Ray was also willing to jump in when Sand gets a call from his mum being in trouble.

One thing I do have to stress is the difference in Ray's demeanour when he's severely drunk/high versus when he's sober. His addiction tends to amplify his most primal desires, his most 'childlike' traits. The uglier sides of Ray presented in their worst light, set to maximum. The raging tantrums, the absurd and unpredictable demands, an explosive and dangerous impulsiveness. People often refer to addiction as a form of sickness, which is worth noting when the person under scrutiny is effectively not well.

Learning by Example

Now let's talk about the huge importance of Sand in this equation.

Let me be clear - it's not Sand's responsibility to teach Ray how to grow up or behave more like a functioning adult. It's neither his duty to be a stand-in parent or caretaker. The unfortunate truth is that Ray doesn't have anyone in his life who plays that role. Who is the voice of reason. To keep him on the straight and narrow. In order to actually incite change, Ray needs to be receptive to whoever is trying to help him. We've seen he doesn't respond particularly well to the majority of people in his life. He's defensive with his father, his friends, deflective and pandering with Mew. The only person he's seen to show any signs of actually listening to and registering is Sand.

Whilst it's not fair on Sand, he might be the only person who has any real chance of encouraging healthy and positive growth in Ray. Because Sand loves Ray, he genuinely wants to see improvement for Ray's own good. I don't think it's a coincidence that we tend to see Ray's more endearing side when he's with Sand. His childlike qualities take on a sweeter, more harmless, playful tone.

He needs someone with an almost parental level of unconditional love to not give up on him, where others have thrown in the towel. Ray's character is essentially a personified cry for help. His mother was unable to cope. His father seems chronically exasperated and far too busy to actually be present. His friends have always seen him as bothersome and too much of a handful.

I personally don't want to write Ray off as a lost cause. Ironically, Sand may be the saviour he didn't ask for, but the one he really needs. Someone who can save him from himself.

I don’t know if there’s a clear analog to the 8th that isn’t the Hightowers but I already said them.

but the ninth, the rapidly aging and fallen from grace death cult who guard a sacred structure because they are told if it ever falls the world is going to end but have lost any understanding of its actual purpose to time and ritualizing the act of guarding it? that’s the nights watch.

Ideas for a potential (and ideal for my tastes) Kirby Party game!!

This'll be long, obviously, so I'm leaving everything under the cut.

At its core, the game is a literal copy-and-paste of classic Mario Party. Everyone moves around the board, gathering more of a select item than their competitors to win, with minigames sprinkled throughout. No differences there. The difference comes from what the objects are, in this case.

On the topic of stars:

Here, stars are replaced with food items, given out by Kawasaki who replaces Toad. Whenever Kawasaki is moved, through any means, he prepares a new, unique food item.

When you get to Kawasaki, you can spend 20 point-stars (the Kirby equivalent of coins) for whatever he offers. Or you could spend 25 point-stars to get a different food selected at random.

Why does this matter? Because you can eat these food items for special bonuses, offering a nice helping of strategy to the established norm. Eating them means you lose a point, however, so it should be used very carefully to be effective.

Outside of those, at least one food is offered that has no stat effects and is just your bog standard.

On the topic of items:

Originally, I had planned for most of the items to come straight from Mario Party 2, but after looking more closely into the item system of Parties 5-7 (mainly 6 because it serves as another big influence on the project), I fell in love with the nuance and strategy that could be employed.

With that in mind, I was thinking about revamping the item system and number of items to better fall in line with this style. However, I'll still share the old item lineup, just for personal reference:

Wheelies act as mushrooms, letting you roll two dice blocks, while Rex Wheelies let you roll three.

Warp Stars act as, well, Warp Blocks, letting you swap places with a random player.

The Dimension Mirror allows you to move backward along a board when used. (And this will be more costly, so as not to be absolutely broken like the Reverse Mushroom was.)

The Vat-luck moves Kawasaki to a different space.

The Noddy Network calls Nightmare upon a player of your choosing.

The Enticing Cheese calls Daroach, while the Stinky Cheese prevents Daroach from stealing from you.

The Dinner Bell warps you straight to Kawasaki.

The Invisibility Stone lets you walk through alternate pathways.

The Nebula Chest steals a random item.

The Dueler's Sword... is self-explanatory.

On the topic of boards:

I conceptualized 12 main boards for the game. At the moment, they are:

Augmented Area (Technology-themed.)

Foody Feilds (Grassland, Food-centric theming.)

Corruption Cavern (Mining cave theme.)

Dusky Drawings (Spooky Mansion + Art theme)

Basalt Boulevard (Fire/Lava theme)

Headstrong Honky-tonk (A casino in Merry Magoland.)

Nightmare's Nexus (Space Theme)

I may end up removing some of these, adding more, or changing a few of these ideas around.

Each playable character will have a unique outfit for every board except for two. No one will have a unique outfit on Basalt Boulevard, and everyone will have a unique outfit on Nightmare's Nexus.

The character that does not have a unique outfit on the given board plays an integral role at the end if they lose, triggering a boss fight that acts as a final minigame (sort of similar to the boss minigames in Mario Party 9).

And that's everything I had! I hope you guys like my ideas!

National Vote Out Incumbents

OVER THE LAST ONE HUNDRED YEARS WE HAVE MADE THE JOURNEY FROM A NATION OF FIERCE INDEPENDENCE TO A NATION OF COMPLETE DEPENDENCE FROM THE VERY INSTITUTION THAT WE CREATED TO SERVE US.

We have done this by listening to slick and polished politicians, who were created with intent and purpose by the legal profession. These politicians have slowly increased their influence in our lives to the point that now fifty eight percent of all elected officials are lawyers. They have led the expansion of the federal footprint with little or no regard to the enumerated powers of the constitution in regards to the clear and finite limitations of federal bureaucracy.

They have done this with cunning, deceit and more importantly they have succeeded because of the apathy and ignorance of ill informed voters. Our Founding Fathers in many ways and many times warned US that our liberty, freedom and self control and determination of our lives were going to be under constant attack by those whom we may chose to elect unless we kept a tight rein on their activities. They well knew that it is the nature of some to seek authority under the guise of being your “servant” in order to gain power and control for themselves while at the same time stealing your God given liberties and freedoms.

They well knew that if the duty or right to educate the people was extended to a governmental body that over time the very minds of the people could be moved from one of strict and fierce independence to one of complete and total dependence. The easiest way to achieve this is through the public education of children. This is why they did not make education a duty of the federal government. If governmental control of public schools were to made it was wholly the right of each sovereign state to do so. They preferred that it be the duty of the parents of their own children. It the duty of parents to instill the character of a free and independent thinking and actions of their children. It is the duty of parents to teach moral living, to instill the virtues of hard work and honesty. It is further their duty to teach the principles of government our nation was founded on. It is the duty of parents to teach their children the duty and necessity of being actively involved in all arenas and aspects of government in order to maintain and preserve the very principles that granted them the freedom to control their destinies.

I have had people argue with me and say this is not so. To them I always ask them how much do they know about the history of all civilized governments in general and then how much do they know about the history of our own Congress, Executive Branch and US Supreme Court. How much do they know about the internal rules that each body operates under. How much do they know about the specific powers, authority and duty each body is constitutionally given. Over ninety eight percent cannot answer them correctly. They have relied on what little they have been taught in school and the bias that comes with that teaching. This as it was in the advancement of communism in Russia and indeed China how full and total control of a nation of people was accomplished. Too many have their heads in the sand. Too many have responded that it couldn’t happen in the good ole USA. Such is the folly of fools.

Too many say it is the device and actions of the Democrats. Well it is the action of a two party system working together and when needed playing the good cop, bad cop role. The history of government as I have personally followed and examined starts with President John F Kennedy to Barack Hussein Obama. President Kennedy was a man appalled by the actions and abuses of the federal government and the way that people of deep pockets where so easily able to buy the favor of congress and many presidents. He was determined to expose it and change the course of our nation and sadly he was assassinated before he had the chance. President Reagan was able to slow the progress to a degree, but he was unable to usher in a reversal of the trend. The Bush’s, Clinton and Obama did their duty in the progression of greater governmental control at the federal level. Enter in Barack Obama and his enormous ego. He determined that it was his duty to complete the transition of our nation from a representative republic to one of a centralized socialistic control of ALL halls of government.

The common thread to this control has come from the third “co-equal” branch of government, the Supreme Court. They in concert with the unhealthy number of lawyers elected and appointed to offices of government have co-opted an unequal power and control over this nation. They have over time systematically forced by unconstitutional judicial fiat the very essence of our founding. How did we as a nation go from adding “Under God” in our pledge of allegiance in 1956 to removing God and His Holy Word a short six years later. The Supreme Court did not have the authority to do that under the Constitution. The Tenth Amendment is the constitutional remedy to declare a law from Congress and a sitting president null and void.

Too few know and even fewer understand that the sovereign states created the federal government as a tool to equally serve them in matters of common interest. Let’s put it this way. Let’s look at it as a family unit. The parents, (the states), gave birth, (created ) to three children named Executive Branch, Legislative Branch and Judicial Branch. As is natural for siblings they have arguments and disagreements from time to time with each other. Is it not the duty of the parents to step in and mediate these arguments and to sometimes step in and resolve them? How is it that we allowed the sibling Judicial Branch to become the arbiter of disagreements that are clearly and rightfully the duty of the parents (creators). There is nowhere in the constitution that allows a federal interference with the exception of a state choosing on its own to further restrict the rights and duties of the federal government as clearly found in the enumerated powers in OUR Constitution. This means that federal judges have no legal authority to interfere with states rights and laws passed into law in their in their respective jurisdictions. Their laws can only be found unconstitutional by the means afforded in their own Sovereign State Constitutions.

We see them constantly attack and assault the first two Amendments in the Bill of Rights. If we ever as a nation completely surrender one, the other or both our liberty will have been self forfeited.

Until law abiding patriotic Americans stand up and step out requiring ALL halls of government to function and serve the people within their limited scope of power and authority all freedom is at risk and our nation will succumb to the same failures of all great nations before US. The sad thing is we had and still can have an unique form of government that truly can function as designed. By the people, we with God’s divine providence. For the people, meaning governance that serves to protect the liberty of each citizen to make as much or as little as they are satisfied with in life. From the people, meaning that we fully exercise our duty as a citizen in protecting the life, liberty and pursuit of happiness in a legal and moral manner from being infringed by the body of our government.. ~MLB~

These are familiar to me. I understand these mental pathways. I told them that life isn't about making the world a better place or being a better person, but rather about using your time and living your life well.

I told them to go do the things they want to do, provided that those things serve them, and to be content and know it is enough.

But I came here with the rest of my thoughts.

Because you set the metric.

what does it look like to be doing Enough? Are you solving climate change? Are you feeding the hungry? Are you managing to cycle your laundry?

What does it mean for you as a person if you take the time to set this metric, and the Real Honest answer is that you Aren't doing enough? What then? Do you feel Bad about it? Does that mean part of your brain get to revel in being right? Is it just a lousy invitation to self-punishment? You know there's no motivation down that Rabbit-hole, right?

And contrary-wise, what if the answer is Yes? What if you Are, in fact operating at capacity, within the bounds of your circumstances and abilities?
