Question for us Sambucky fans. In an alternative version of endgame, the other half gets snapped. Sam and Bucky end up in Vormir. (Instead of Clint and Nat)
How does it go?
Does Sam or Bucky die? Sam has a lot more to lose, but he knows losing bucky means losing steve, and captain America, Sam can't let Bucky fall again. Sam wouldn't.
Bucky has fought one war after another for 90 years. In his mind, Bucky is thinking he wants his peace. Maybe he'll find peace at the bottom of this canyon, that he didn't find in the alps. He refuses to let another innocent die because of him. He won't let Sam do it. He needs to make his amends, and heck, the world needs Sam more than him.
Who makes the sacrifice or would they both do it?

In the Haret Hreik neighborhood of Dayihe, Beirut, a banner is raised to honor Aaron Bushnell, who self-immolated in front of the zionist embassy in Washington in solidarity with Palestine and in rejection of his country's position supporting the genocide war waged against Gaza.
"Aaron Bushnell, from the people of loyalty and sincerity, to your pure soul. Your devotion and loyalty to the Palestinian people will remain a trust in our necks for eternity."
In March, signs honoring Bushnell were raised in Areeha, Palestine and Sana'a, Yemen.

thinking about a whumpee being made to lead their captors back to their team. whumpee's lying, of course; why the hell would they lead the enemy straight to their friends when they have an opportunity to throw them off the trail?
so they lead the enemy away. arms bound, maybe even on a chain or rope so they can't try to run for it, followed like a bloodhound. every step they take brings the enemy further from their friends, but it also brings them further from their friends. viscerally aware that the chances of rescue go down the further they go, and having no plans for what happens when the enemy catches on. just hoping they can find a moment to escape before then.

Self sacrifice in an "i can take it; you can't" way X self sacrifice in an "you can take it; and i know i can't, but it'd rather this than letting you through it" way X self sacrifice in an "neither of us can take it. it doesn't matter, 'cause its gonna be me" way

i suppose that one of my most unpopular opinions is that christianity - in it’s most liberating & progressive forms - does require a lifelong commitment to self-sacrifice. you are called, like Christ, to burn yourself in order to keep others warm.
i’m not a fan of the modern idea of “cheap grace,” which scoffs at things like undeserved forgiveness. you are called to forgive the worst people you know, even if it takes a lifetime.
while grace is abundant, free, and gentle - we find the example of Christ condescending himself to live among the least of these,” suffering and dying - and calling his followers to do the same.
christ’s mercy never waned for those followers who walked away, but many did walk away once the calling became difficult.
while a lot of the language of “discipline” and “discipleship” gets misapplied by conservative christians to tie heavy burdens onto others, i think it’s a mistake as a progressive/leftist believers to ignore the fact that following Christ can certainly require intense levels of personal discomfort and difficult work.
yet, we don’t suffer alone.

Emotional conflict with defiant whumpees
Content: slapping, minor whumpee, punishment, beating, whipping
Those short little glares at whumper that dart all over the room afterward, measuring their chances and not liking the odds
Defiant kid not sure what would be most insulting so they're a little tentative about it, watching whumper's reaction closely
Making a biting remark and getting slapped for it. Feeling the ache and sting in their cheek, they hold back the second half of that comment.
A whumpee that was pretty stoic until whumpee 2 came along. All of a sudden whumpee 1 is very effectively insulting whumper every time they walk into the room, drawing all the abuse onto themselves.
Whumpee that cares about whumper, so instead of yelling or making biting remarks, they try to tell whumper to stop and stand their ground, only to get beaten down again.
When whumpee is only defiant around other people, no matter how much punishment they get, but when whumper drags them off somewhere private, they struggle to keep up their bravado.
Whumpee may be routinely beaten, but they are whipped for mouthing off. They save it for when they're royally pissed off.
Whumpee is encouraged to be defiant, but still punished for taking it too far. They're also punished even more harshly for being boring. They're constantly agonizing over how far to take it.

Thinking about characters who give more than was asked for, or needed. Thinking about characters who believe they deserve to suffer. Thinking about characters who experience pain as penance, who think their suffering can redeem them. Thinking about characters who give and give until they have nothing left because they know they cannot be redeemed. Thinking about characters who cannot bear the weight of being loved, and must balance that weight against acts of overwhelming ‘goodness.’ Thinking about characters who set themselves on fire in the first days of spring, and think they are doing the world a favor by keeping others warm.
Thinking about self-sacrifice as a form of self-destruction.

whumpee looks back at them and a tear rolls down their cheek, "I'm the only one who can."
