Meet the Spot-billed Toucanet (Selenidera maculirostris)! This species inhabits forests throughout Central and South America, including parts of Argentina and Brazil. It’s often seen in pairs or small groups foraging for fruit. In addition to the signature spots on its bill, it has dark spots around its pupils; this gives the illusion of horizontal pupils. April 18, 2015 - Spot-billed Toucanet (Selenidera maculirostris)
Requested by: taylorrbranham
Found in southeastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina, these small toucans spend much of their time foraging in pairs for fruit, as well as some insects and small vertebrates. They were previously considered the same species as the Gould’s Toucanet and differ mostly in the patterns on their beaks. Males and females look similar, but the female has a chestnut brown head and rufous chest. They nest in tree hollows high above the ground, lined with some wood chips or regurgitated seeds. Both parents incubate the eggs and feed the chicks.

Reddish-brown plumage on the head is a telltale sign of a female. Males have black plumage instead. 🦜 Photo: Jairmoreirafotografia, CC-BY-SA-4.0, Wikimedia Commons https://www.instagram.com/p/CHrgBIIg8OR/?igshid=1qr40o72p76x0

Spot-billed Toucanet
The Spot-billed Toucanet, Selenidera maculirostris, is a member of the Ramphastidae Family occurring in the Atlantic Forest in Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay.
Selenidera maculirostris feeds mainly on fruits and makes regional migrations following the fruiting season of species such as Palm-heart (Euterpe edulis).
In the photo you can see a couple, the one with black cap is the male.
