niche manga recommendation!
title: saint? no, just a passing monster tamer! the completely unparalleled saint travels with fluffies (lit. seijo-sama? Iie, toorisugari no mamonotsukai desu! zettai muteki no seijo wa mofumofu to tabi wo suru)
featuring:
overpowered mc who is an utter goof!
mc is high spec top honors student at a fancy magic academy with all the fancy titles, but it turns out she's just been buffing herself this whole time in preparation to have a fluffy pet
a fluffy cat that's actually a powerful demon!
this is different than the s-rank behomoth / mii-chan the cat god / that other fantasy manga about a demon lord being a feline pet--it's centered mostly around the mc!
super funny + great expressions for mc's fluffy companion

Mangadex went down so I read alot 7/7
Lets CONTINUE reviewing a bunch of isekai and related stuff I binged because mangadex went down. The scale will be a single thumbs up to a single thumbs down in terms of how much I would consider recommending it in general. Lot more to come, brace yourself future me who is reading this.
Joou Heika no Isekai Strategy
Chapters 1-18
Its about a girl being slowly mindbroken into being evil ft spiders. Eh. Its no Overlord. THUMB IN BOTTOM CORNER.
Candy & Cigarettes
Chapters 1-20
THUMBS UP. Mangaka really gets it. They are a super saiyan god super saiyan tier lolicon and it shows. This manga WILL turn you into a lolicon. Now about the manga, Miharu is cold blooded. Love all the dumb simple “I HEART KILL” tier shirts she wears. Characters arcs for both the MCs are on point. Story always progressing towards its big goal in good feeling ways. Art is top tier. Very funni americans. What more could you want from a loli assassin x old man cleaner manga?
Tensei Goblin dakedo Shitsumon aru?
Chapters 1-28
Somethings not connecting with this one for me. [Insert isekai startup here] but this time its a goblin who can live as old as a human instead of dying in like 3 days like a normal goblin. Magic is skill exclusive and skills get passed on when someone dies. So obviously a demon lord gives the MC a skill. No interesting skills really outside the time related one. Plot kinda lame because its city building but the goals of the story in building the city aren’t stated(beyond become demon lord) and nothing too interesting happens. Tensura and Death Attribute Magician do everything this attempts but way better. THUMBS DOWN.
Naze Boku no Sekai wo Daremo Oboeteinai no ka?
Chapters 1-30
Feels like Guilty Crown. Not Code Geass, Guilty Crown specifically. Huge and important difference. Especially with the way the main character’s powers are handled. They are sort of ethereal and the MC is incredibly weak without this god weapon. Good art for boss battles, art is usually photo-realistic backgrounds but drawn characters. Nice world building to really build the dread of saving the world. Nice mystery behind everything as well but ultimately THUMB IN UPPER CORNER. Strong feeling of dumb fun throughout.
Seirei Gensouki
Chapters 1-35
Way too long for me to not feel neither the pulse of the theme nor the pulse of the overarching plot. Everything feels like its been building up and just setting up something world altering potentially. No idea what it is at all. Like to see worlds with multiple isekaiers in them tho. And also there are satisfyingly wrapped up emotional arcs. Just didn’t connect with me personally enough. THUMB IN THE MIDDLE.
Seijo-sama? Iie, Toorisugari no Mamonotsukai desu!: Zettai Muteki no Seijo wa Mofumofu to Tabi wo Suru
Chapters 1-6
[Insert isekai startup here] but this time its an OP girl who just wants to fluff this fluffy animal because she couldn’t in her first life. Pretty wholesome. Really enjoy the stuff down with said pet and how early it’s backstory is gone into to set up for latter. THUMBS UP.
Boushoku-Hi no Ken
Chapters 1-15
Girls kinda badass. Like seein em go. Especially the main devil girl, Beelzebub. Tons of ass shots. Nice. Tons of scary evil shots. Nice. THUMB UP.
A Skeleton Who Was The Brave
Chapters 1-11
Read some of the doujins by the artist. Nice dr2 one. This manga is totally different though, being a somber story about a hero turned undead that has to go on one more adventure through the world he fought to protect. But he is a total goofball so chiaroscuro ensues. THUMBS UP.
Ore wa Mada, Honki wo Dashiteinai
Chapters 1-5
About a powerful and intelligent noble who wants to bum around but his sister knows how great he is and forces him to show off his power. THUMB UP. Funny enough to make me read more.
Sekai de Tadahitori no Mamono Tsukai ~Tenshoku Shitara Maou ni Machigawa Remashita~
Chapters 1-27
Very similar to Tensura. Really like how this MC is kinda forced into their situation and tries to make the best country they can BUT are constantly being manipulated politcally despite his overwhelming physical power. Fun read. THUMBS UP.
Live Dungeon!
Chapters 1-40
Just about doing raids in dungeons. Nothing more, nothing less. If you loved that 1/3rd of Log Horizon, then you might like this. THUMBS UP.
Tenseishichatta yo (Iya, Gomen)
Chapters 1-35
Worst part about it is probably its art. Everything else too mediocre to mention or really recall. THUMB IN THE MIDDLE.
Jitsu wa Ore, Saikyou deshita?
Chapters 1-33
Kinda funny and kinda dumb. MC has OP barrier magic because [insert isekai startup here] but he wants to laze around. Of course he can’t once he pretends to be the demon lord, pretends to be a vigilante, and then befriends the actual demon lord. Feels good in a slice of life ish way while also having plot. THUMBS UP.
Maou-sama no Machizukuri!: Saikyou no Dungeon wa Kindai Toshi
Chapters 1-29
Lets build this town, demon lords! Actually quite a lot of likable characters in this one. All of the MC’s entourage go through some form of character development too which is commendable. THUMBS UP. Best girl has to be Demon Lord of Wind, Stolas.
Senken no Majutsushi to Yobareta Kenshi
Chapters 1-24
THUMB IN UPPER CORNER. Feels like a reincarnation manga because the world is setback in development and MC is OP in comparison. Also twins are discriminated against in this world because twin demons hurt the goddess in a fight long ago. MC hates the goddess in the vastly religious world. Pretty unique for what it is. Also MC fights with swordmancy which is pretty based.
Shitsugyou Kenja no Nariagari: Kirawareta Sainou wa Sekai Saikyou deshita
Chapters 1-43
Starts off with the [hyper compotent person kicked out of complete idiot hero party] setup, but this aint really about that. It is REALLY about an OP shota learning how to work for a --cute demon lord-- company that isn’t awful like all the human ones. What can I say? Necromancer shota x bastet, the demon lord of lust? THUMBS UP.
#Joou Heika no Isekai Strategy#Candy & Cigarettes#Tensei Goblin dakedo Shitsumon aru?#Naze Boku no Sekai wo Daremo Oboeteinai no ka?#Seirei Gensouki#Seijo-sama? Saint? No! I’m Just a Passing Beast Tamer!: The Invincible Saint and the Quest for Fluff, Vol. 2
By Inumajin and Falmaro. Released in Japan as “Seijo-sama? Iie, Toorisugari no Mamono Tsukai desu! – Zettai Muteki no Seijo wa Mofumofu to Tabi wo suru” by Kadokawa Books. Released in North America by J-Novel Club. Translated by Meteora.
As with the last volume, the main thing you notice about this book is that it’s a comedy. That said,, things are actually pretty dark when Kanata’s not on the scene. The church is evil and is taking the money for themselves. The church is also brainwashing local ogres into having their minions attack small villages. Bitter blacksmiths are tricking their rival’s daughter into paying fake debt. And yet… when Kanata IS on the page, everyone turns into the broadest comedy. The hypercompetent adventurer Melissa turns into the ultimate whiny office lady. The evil Saint causing all this is far more annoyed that Kanata doesn’t even bother to see her as an enemy. And the massive wolf-spirit imprisoned by the Church finds that he can get far more laughs if he’s a cute puffball. The key to Kanata saving the world is not her ludicrous power to do anything, or her vague kindness that mostly revolves around fluff. It’s that she’s funny.
We pick up where we left off, with Kanata and her demon lord turned pussycat companion Zaggy trying to track down more fluff for Kanata to pet. They run into a small dog puffball, who Kanata nicknames Fen-Fen, who is of course the aforementioned Wolf Spirit. He’s spent decades waiting for the Saint that he’s supposed to dedicate himself to, only to be locked up by Marianne, the girl who actually does have the Saint title but has none of the Saint morality. She’s actually being led by the goddess we saw last time, who has one piece of advice for her: if you see Kanata, run away. Sadly, Marianne does not take this advice, and now has to deal with a girl who will get more fluff By Any Means Necessary, even if it means doing endless amounts of tiny, cheap good deeds.
The joke about Kanata, of course, is that she *is* the Saint, but accidentally. She’s not particularly saving lives, helping find lost pets, or taking down the evil church that’s controlling everything because it’s the right thing to do. Indeed, you could argue that she doesn’t notice what she’s doing at all. She does it because it will get her fluff. Hell, the evil Saint, Marianne, is seemingly killed by her patron goddess, only for Kanata to resurrect her… because her hair is a 10 points on the fluffy scale. No other reason. We do occasionally see flashes of her actually comprehending what’s going on… in the side story she clearly sees the cheating going on and decides to help by having Zaggy cheat on the other side… But for the most part, she’s not good or bad. She’s fluff. And since no one in this world knows what that means, it becomes an all-purpose thing to strive for, be it strength, good deeds, whatever. Fluff is what you want it to be.
Of course, Kanata wants it to be fluff she can snuggle. She may have to wait a bit, the third volume is not out in Japan yet. Till then, this is silly but… no, it’s just silly.

Saint? No! I’m Just a Passing Beast Tamer!: The Invincible Saint and the Quest for Fluff, Vol. 1
I had this on my list of new J-Novel Club releases to try out, but I didn’t really have too many high hopes. The author had written a very similar series, Woof Woof Story: I Told You to Turn Me Into a Pampered Pooch, Not Fenrir!, but that one really didn’t grab me at all. So I started to read this book, and I began to laugh. And then I kept reading, and I started laughing a lot. This is a funny book. It has a ridiculous lead character (no, she’s literally described by her brother as ridiculous), her own ridiculous goals in life (and a backstory that might seem familiar to Leadale fans), and a lot of good ridiculous dialogue, though the reader will need to be willing to go along with the standard “I did a ridiculous thing.” “YOU DID A RIDICULOUS THING?!?!?!” style comedy. Basically, this book is hella fun. And, of course, hella fluffy.
Yoshino Kanata spent her entire life in Japan in a hospital bed on life support. She regarded herself as happy because she had the internet, but those in charge of the afterlife think she had SUPER bad karma. As a result, they’re reincarnating her with all the good karma they possibly can. She’s reborn as Kanata Aldezia. Her father is the finest swordsman in the land. Her mother a great sage. She herself has won every award imaginable. And now, it’s time for the ceremony that determines the calling she will have going forward, because isekai worlds only run on RPG logic. Everyone thinks she will be a Saint. She has a different calling in mind. See, in Japan she never got to pet a cuddly animal. And here, she’s so terrifyingly powerful that animals fear her. Therefore, she’s going to be a Beast Tamer and got fluffy animals all around her! One slight problem – Beast Tamer is the biggest loser profession of them all.
So yes, Kanata is a trip, one of those heroines who does not have one ounce of common sense in her head but makes up for it with more power and determination than God. Indeed, as the final scene of the book shows, this is literally true. All she wants to do is leave the city and find fluffy monsters to pet. So far, she mostly has Zagg’iel, aka Zaggy. The former King of Demons, he’s under a curse that has essentially made him into a tubby little cat creature. The interaction between these two is both funny and heartwarming, as she loves him and roots for him even when he’s weak and has no powers. Of course, she never quite manages to leave the city. She beats up on bird creatures, tames dragons, cleans the sewers, restarts magical furnaces, and finally faces off against the new demon king and his army of mind-controlled minions Through all of this, her mindset is set on one thing: Is this fluff? Can I pet it? If not… she’s unimpressed.
So yes, this is better than Woof Woof Story and also deeply silly. I’ll be reading more. recommended for those who love OP ditzes and snuggling small creatures.

Manga the Week of 2/9/22
SEAN: February still exists, despite all our best efforts. What manga is there next week?
ASH: It still does, doesn’t it?
SEAN: We start off with Airship, which has early digital editions for The Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter 6 and The Strange Adventure of a Broke Mercenary 4.
Ghost Ship debuts 2.5 Dimensional Seduction (2.5 Jigen no Yuuwaku), which runs in Shonen Jump +. The manga club president is only into fictional girls. But wait… what if real-life girls cosplay AS fictional girls? This comes with a recommendation from the creator of One Piece, well known for his realistic body designs on women.
ASH: With the right creator that could be a cute premise.
SEAN: Ghost Ship also has Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time 7 and SUPER HXEROS 5.
Two light novel debuts for J-Novel Club. Fantasy Inbound (Isekai, Shuurai) is an MF Bunko J title, and this time around, the fantasy world is crossing over to Japan… to invade it! With the world in chaos and destroyed, can one man stand a chance to save it?
The other title is Saint? No! I’m Just a Passing Beast Tamer! (Seijo-sama? Iie, Toorisugari no Mamono Tsukai desu!), a Kadokawa Books series about a girl who SHOULD be the Saint who will help to guide the Church… but will that get her cute animals to snuggle? Will it get her fluff? No. Ergo, she must change jobs!
ASH: I can follow that logic.
SEAN: Other light novels are The Greatest Magicmaster’s Retirement Plan 12, A Late-Start Tamer’s Laid-Back Life 2, and The Tales of Marielle Clarac 8.
On the manga side, they have Der Werwolf: The Annals of Veight -Origins- 5 and My Instant Death Ability Is So Overpowered, No One in This Other World Stands a Chance Against Me! —AΩ— 3.
ASH: It took me a moment to fully parse how many titles you just listed there.
SEAN: Kodansha has some print books. Cells At Work: Baby! 3, The Hero Life of a (Self-Proclaimed) “Mediocre” Demon! 2, I’m Standing on a Million Lives 11, Lovesick Ellie 2, Perfect World 10, Shaman King Omnibus 7, Toppu GP 7, and The Witch and the Beast 8.
ASH: Seems like the first print volume of Lovesick Ellie was just released not too long ago; I need to pick that up!
ANNA: It is really good! I didn’t realize the second volume was coming out so fast.
SEAN: Two digital debuts. Falling Drowning (Ochite Oborete) is a Dessert series about a high school love triangle. (Sorry, sometimes they just sound like that.)
MICHELLE: I will probably be checking this out.
ANNA: It sounds like my kind of thing, but I’m terrible at reading digital manga.
SEAN: Fungus and Iron (Kin to Tetsu) is a sci-fi shonen series that comes from Bessatsu Shonen Magazine. A young man risks it all for love… but the risks involve mushrooms!
ASH: Okay, I’m curious.
SEAN: Also digital: Are You Lost? 9, Giant Killing 29, I Was Reincarnated with OP Invincibility, so I’ll Beat ’em Up My Way as an Action-Adventurer 2, In the Clear Moonlit Dusk 3, It’s That Reincarnated-as-a-Virus Story 2, Police in a Pod 9, The Springtime of My Life Began with You 5 (the final volume), and Tokyo Revengers 24.
MICHELLE: I really must catch up on Giant Killing.
SEAN: Seven Seas has Seaside Stranger 2 and Skip and Loafer 3.
SuBLime debuts Change World, a Dear+ title that is a sequel to Sayonara Game.
They’ve also got the special limited edition of Yarichin Bitch Club 4.
Tokyopop debuts Alice in Bishonen-Land (Shinkyou Alice to bishounen to bishounen to bishounen to bishounen to bishounen ~Otome Game Royale~), a shoujo series that seems to combine idols with trapped in a game survival stuff. Our heroine is a manager?
Viz debuts Deadpool: Samurai, a series which runs in Shonen Jump + but stars everyone’s favorite Marvel headcase. Will Deadpool meet the stars of Shonen Jump? I wouldn’t put it past him…
ASH: That could be fun.
ANNA: Truly, there is no way to escape Deadpool.
SEAN: Viz also has Call of the Night 6, Fullmetal Alchemist: Fullmetal Edition 16, the light novel Fullmetal Alchemist: The Abducted Alchemist, Hayate the Combat Butler 39, How Do We Relationship? 5, and Komi Can’t Communicate 17.
Yen On has three ‘delayed from January’ books: Baccano! 18, The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt (Hey, How About Treason?) 8, and High School DxD 6.
And Yen Press gives us Combatants Will Be Dispatched! 6, Days on Fes 4, and In Another World with My Smartphone 4.
Can you make February go away with your MIND? Or with manga?
