Simon Baker reveals his coast connection ahead Breathe premiere on the Gold Coast

STARS, they’re just like us. Simon Baker, the guy they call Smiley, the Mentalist, calls my house on a Saturday morning from his mobile, no PR, no minders … but also no time.

“I’m so sorry,” he says. “Something’s just come up. If you’re not busy in a couple of hours, can I call you then for our interview?”

Of course, I concur. I have been stood up by far lesser than Mr Baker. When we talk again, he admits the reason he had to run was actually because he had to surf … with his son.

“I could see that look in his eye, the conditions were good and he wanted to get out.

“The alternative was he’d pick up a device and start playing games,” says the 48-year-old father of three. “I had to intervene and get him away from technology.”

We’re used to seeing Simon on screen — from E Street in the early 90s to his first American film, the acclaimed LA Confidential, to starring roles in The Guardian and The Mentalist — all trademark golden curls and crinkly eyes.

But as much as he’s every bit the leading man, there’s something so familiar about him. Deep inside there’s still that Aussie boy next door.

In fact, there’s every chance that if you grew up on the Gold Coast, he was the boy next door.

Born and bred in Northern New South Wales, he attended Ballina High and still owns a property in nearby Nashua.

In fact, he and wife actor Rebecca Rigg donated to the Rise Above the Flood appeal just last year to help their neighbours hit by the natural disaster.

But in between Ballina and Hollywood, Simon did a solid stint in Surfers Paradise.

“When I left home I did a year in Sydney, but then I came up to the Goldie,” he says.

“A bunch of mates and I moved in to this old fibro shack on Garfield Terrace. It was just after the bend in the road. It had a huge pine tree in the back and then just beach.

“It was the last house left in that stretch. We were evicted because they sold the land to build another high-rise. I’ll have to drive past it one day. They were some fun times. We all worked in hospitality and just surfed. I worked at the Hyatt Sanctuary Cove at that big beach pool.”

Yep, for those of us of a certain age, Simon Baker was our pool boy. In fact, he may well take that trip down memory lane this weekend. He’s on the Coast not just to attend the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, but to launch a project that’s not just dear to his heart but his surfer’s soul.

Breath is Baker’s feature film directorial debut, adapted from the 2008 novel by celebrated Australian author Tim Winton, and will have its Queensland premiere at the Gold Coast Film Festival this Thursday.

The classic coming of age tale follows Pikelet and Loonie, two teenage boys growing up in a small coastal town in Western Australia in the 1970s.

Their love of surfing and adventure sees their paths cross with older, local surfer Bill “Sando” Sanderson, played by Baker, who describes the character as “a mentor, but pathetic in his own way”.

Having grown up surfing in Ballina, and with teenage sons of his own, Harry, 16, and Claude, 19, plus 24-year-old daughter Stella, Baker says he felt instantly connected to the characters and themes in Winton’s novel before adapting the storyline for screen.

“To me it’s all about identity. It’s about the boys, Pikelet and Loonie, trying to figure out who they are in this coming-of-age time of their lives,” he says.

“It’s about Sando and his sort of stunted identity. As much as he’s this mentor to them, he’s not a Yoda character. He’s more pathetic than wise. He’s stuck in the past and never learned to take responsibility. But it’s also about the identity of Australia.

“Our identity is tied to the sea, to the coastline, but our identity is also constantly shifting. We drift with the tide between our UK heritage, our ties with America and our indigenous history.”

Baker says the film helped shift his own definition of identity, from actor to director and filmmaker. Sando may be a father-figure of sorts to the boys, but the film was Baker’s own lovechild.

“We got the book option about eight years ago and the past three or four years have been really intense,” he says.

“It doesn’t matter who you are, getting a film made is a long, hard process. It’s a labour of love.

“I’d like to direct again though. I feel at home directing. I feel like I can contribute more when I’m in that role. It’s not easy but it’s immensely satisfying.”

The fact that the subject matter dealt with one of Baker’s other great loves, surfing, is obvious when watching the film. The poetry of motion writes a love letter to a time and place that, while changed, is not entirely gone. The boys who grew up in the ’70s and ’80s, like Pikelet, Loonie and Baker himself, are the fathers of today, guiding their own children through ever-choppy conditions.

“That era of the 70s is still so familiar to us — I loved putting up the pictures from Copperart in the houses. Who didn’t have that in their home?” he says.

“I think I was a boy who was somewhere between those two adolescent characters, the sort of dreamy individual that is Pikelet and the wild, lost boy that is Loonie. But ultimately, I’m more Pikelet. Otherwise I never would have got this movie made.

“But the thing we all have in common is this love for surfing. I can’t really say what it is to me. It’s all different sorts of things and it changes every time I go to the water. These days it’s a great way to commune with nature and to catch up with old friends.

“It’s a break and a relief to be somewhere that no one can contact you, your phone doesn’t ring. Physically, it’s still exhilarating and meditative.”

For Baker, it’s an exercise that is still uniquely Australian. With his children having grown up both here and in the US, he says the surfing community in their Sydney suburb is an extended family of sorts.

“When we walked through the park on the way back from surfing today, I said to my son, ‘Do you see all the different groups hanging out? Do you see the different generations passing through?’ He thought it was so cool to see those little groms coming of age and hanging out with friends at the next level. It’s a rite of passage in some ways.

“Bec and I have always had such close ties to our country, to Australia, no matter where we have been living, and the kids feel that.

“There is something to say for being here and having a different perspective — or just having perspective — on what’s happening in the world.”

Baker’s not the only international star who still calls Australia home, with northern NSW neighbour Chris Hemsworth regularly spotted on our own shores — including at the Commonwealth Games.

“Is he there?” Baker asks. “I really don’t keep up.

“I’m not just saying that, I’m tragic in knowing who’s where and doing what. I am interested in the Games though. I’m really looking forward to seeing the closing ceremony. In fact, the kids are all quiet right now. I might just turn on the TV and watch a bit of the action. Maybe have a little nap.”

We continue to believe all sorts of discriminations on that basis. For example, that a person born in Lahore should have fundamentally different rights than a person born in London. In 200 years, people will look back at this way of thinking and say that we were just as primitive, backward and barbaric as we think people were who engaged in Apartheid or in slavery.

Don’t get me started. Immigration, visa and border regulations are completely outdated considering how we’re actually living.

They’re not just outdated, they haven’t even been around for a long time. People have migrated since forever. Human beings never evolved in Brooklyn and yet, here we are. We all evolved at some point, way back when, in Africa. Nobody is native. Even the people we talk of as Native Americans. They are in a sense, part of the early wave of migration. No one can really say that they can claim a territory which trumps all other consideration. Also, if you think forward, there are a couple of other things we have to think about, like climate change.

And climate change and displacement obviously are incredibly closely tied together.

Yes. Most of the population lives within 100 kilometers of the sea. Billions are going to move when the sea levels rise. What do we do in Bangladesh, where 200 million people will be facing this? Or in Indonesia, where 300 hundred million people will face this? We already have seen what happens in New Orleans in this case. Migration will be forced upon us. If we don't want it to happen, then our only option is a police state. We will have to have a society where everything is about surveillance, control of borders, policemen, and enforcers. Border agents will be at the highest level of society and citizenship will be relative. How American are you? How Pakistani are you? How Muslim you? How white are you? All of these things will be a relative concept. Once we begin to walk down that path, we wind up in a place where everyone is living in a prison.  

That sentiment is very much present in the book, in the form of secret doors. Those are a fascinating and surreal metaphor for the border concept.

It's absolutely true. The secret doors subvert the whole border idea. In the novel, Saeed and Nadia live in an unnamed city. Terrible things befall this city. Militants take it over and life gets horrific. Saeed and Nadia flee by means of these doors that start to open up all over the world. When you pass through one of these doors, you get to a faraway place. You could leave Lahore and be in London. You could leave New York and be in Sydney. Billions of people start to move this way. In this world, the doors are the ultimate hole in the dike of national borders, but they're also the emotional reality of our technologically connected world.

Aha! I thought planes were secret doors, but it sounds like so is my iPhone?

You and I could be having this conversation in a video chat. We would both be looking at a rectangle that looks like a small window, seeing someone on the other side. You can be on the internet on your phone and you'll be standing in Brooklyn, but your consciousness will be in Antarctica, or Israel, or the surface of Mars. I was in North Carolina this morning, I stepped through a door and now I'm in Brooklyn — with much less of a security procedure than I thought, by the way. I was prepared to have some kind of intimate conversation with a security officer. I was kind of terrified actually. But, with luck, we move in this way. The doors for me are emotionally real, even if the physics of them are not real.

Talk about the emotions of leaving. If you’ve ever left a family member behind to move to a new place, that aircraft really becomes this time machine that transports you to a new world, a new reality, and a new identity. Even if you just go from LA to New York.

Each place we go, we're different in. Human beings reflect. We're not these marble statues that are fixed. We each have multiple identities and multiple facets to identities, and they get activated and expressed in different ways. I'm a different person on the dance floor than I am in the courtroom. And I'm a different person playing with my kids than I am right now speaking with you. So yes, when we move through these doors or travel from place to place, something new emerges in each of us.

Saeed and Nadia leave an unnamed place behind, but we know where they are going: Greece, San Francisco, London. Why did you leave the country of origin unnamed and why did you name the destinations?

Partly because we think so often that it's about immigration. It's about the place that you come to. That seems to be the privileged way of thinking about this concept. People from "there" are coming to “my place”. 

That's a very good point, it's always about the other person arriving, never much about leaving. But the act of leaving is really important.

If you think about the immigrant experience, there are two different stories: the story of departure and the story of arrival. Most of the time, when we think about this experience, we focus on that interstitial moment between the two stories: you, on a small rubber boat, in the middle of the Mediterranean, overloaded and about to go under. And while it's very dramatic and horrific, it's a tiny portion of the overall experience. The doors allow us to not overemphasize that dramatic part of the journey and instead to focus on the shared human experience of preparing to leave and arriving in a new place.

What was heartbreaking, is that we no longer know what happens to the ones left behind. Saeed and Nadia have to fight for their own survival. There's not much that we hear about the family they left behind.

Think about what it must take for a child, who loves their parents, to leave them. Especially if they don’t know if they will survive. And yet people do. There's a horrific choice that is made. What must it take for parents to say to their kids, “Go, don't worry about me.” When my kid goes to school in the morning, part of me wants to weep, and grab his hands and say, “Stay, no, no, don't go.” I suppose because, in each departure, there's an echo of that eventual departure when they're going to go away for a lot longer. As a parent, you often feel that. It takes a lot.

Let's talk about "otherness" in current times. Do you believe that right now we're feeling the presence of "otherness" more than ever before?

On the one hand, we are coming together more than ever before. People are seeing each other on television, on computer screens, and in their day-to-day lives. We're all mashed together in the digital world and increasingly in the physical world. The "other" is everywhere. At the same, there's a terror, because we are coded to be frightened of difference. There are these two different things that occur, the repulsion and the attraction. The fear and the desire. We seem to be terrified of each other, but also recognize “the other” in ourselves. "Otherness" is really about our own identity becoming fluid and us becoming terrified of it. You see it in Pakistan, Syria, and Iraq. What is ISIS really terrified of? Above all, they're not that terrified of America and Britain. They're terrified of these hybridized Muslim kids, who seem to be getting westernized — that's what's scary to ISIS. That’s why they provoke a fight with America or Britain. It’s an attempt to stop this hybridization and to end this process of emotional, cultural and spiritual miscegenation.

With this in mind, how can we keep an optimistic view of the future?

I think storytelling is part of it. This novel, which people might think is a terrifying vision of the future or a dystopia, is fundamentally an optimistic story. Not like, “Hey things are going to be great”, but that people will find a way. They will find a way to be happy. They will find a way to express themselves. They will find a way to create meaningful cultural, emotional, spiritual, sexual lives. Saeed and Nadia do. One of the reasons we have fiction is that human beings and society need to imagine what could be, what isn't, and what hasn't been. We are in these traps because of where we have been. To get out of these traps we will need imagination. And that's what fiction is for.

Any parting thoughts?

Yes. If you see a woman approaching, holding her phone in a horizontal fashion, either run or be prepared to talk about books.

Security Screening Intensifies in Australia Airports After Plot Disrupted

Security remained heightened in airports around Australia with more intense screening of luggage after law enforcement officials thwarted what a police chief described on Monday as a “credible attempt to attack an aircraft.”

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Border Protection Minister Peter Dutton declined to comment on newspaper reports that Islamist extremists planned to kill the occupants of a plane with poison gas and that a homemade bomb was to be disguised as a kitchen mincer.

“Police will allege they had the intent and were developing the capability,” Turnbull told Australian Broadcasting Corp.

Turnbull announced on Sunday that “a terrorist plot to bring down an airplane” had been disrupted, but revealed few details.

Four men arrested in raids in Sydney late Saturday — two Lebanese-Australian fathers and their sons — had yet to be charged.

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Andrew Colvin said a court ruled Monday that the four could be detained without charge for seven days from their arrest under counterterrorism laws.

“We believe we have disrupted a legitimate and credible attempt to attack an aircraft,” Colvin told reporters without elaborating.

Colvin has repeatedly described the threat as a “device,” without mentioning whether it was explosive.

“The plot that we are investigating we believe was an attempt to put a device onto an aircraft, but beyond that the speculation is just that — speculation,” he said, adding that police had “many working theories.”

Colvin and the government will not comment on media reports that the suspects were not previously known to Australian security officials and that their arrests followed a tip from a foreign intelligence agency.

“Australians can be assured that we have very fine intelligence services and we moved extremely quickly on this one and, as you can see, with the right outcomes,” Turnbull said.

The Australian newspaper cited multiple anonymous sources saying that the plotters were constructing a “non-traditional” explosive device that could have emitted a toxic, sulfur-based gas to kill or immobilize everyone on the aircraft.

Sydney’s The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported that the plotters planned to make a bomb from wood shavings and explosive material inside a piece of kitchen equipment such as a mincing machine.

Police raided five homes Saturday and removed a domestic grinder and a mincer used to make sausage, the newspaper said.

The plot involved smuggling the device onto a flight from Sydney to the Middle East, possibly Dubai, as carry-on luggage, the newspaper said.

Fairfax Media reported that the bomb was found in a home in the inner-city suburb of Surry Hills, a few doors from the local mosque.

Turnbull declined to say whether the group was guided by someone overseas.

“It’ll be alleged that that this was an Islamist extremist, terrorist motivation,” the prime minister said.

Dutton, the border protection minister, urged travelers to arrive at Australian airports two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights to allow time for more screening. Luggage should be kept to a minimum and those accompanying travelers should not enter secured parts of terminals.

He declined to detail the threat that the security staff were searching for.

“There’ll be lots of speculation around what the intent was … but I don’t want to add to that,” Dutton told Nine Network television. “Our focus now really is making sure that people who are planning a terrorist attack are thwarted.”

Security has been increased at Sydney Airport since Thursday because of the plot and has since been increased in all major Australian international and domestic terminals.

Turnbull would not speculate on how long airport security would remain elevated. “They will be required for as long as the threat is assessed as requiring them,” he said.

Australia’s terrorist threat level remained unchanged at “probable.”

Australia is a staunch ally of the United States and partner in military campaigns in the Middle East. The Islamic State group has highlighted Australia as a Western target.

The plot was the 13th disrupted by police since Australia’s terrorist threat level was elevated in 2014. Five plots have been executed.
