4 winter sun hotspots for end of year escapes
If 2020 has left you feeling low in Vitamin D (and sea), we’ve sought out the sunniest spots to beat the winter blues and wanderlust woes – from the tropical temperatures of Cambodia and the Caribbean, to the balmy shores of Mexico and the Maldives, it’s not too late to plan your end of year escape. These winter sun destinations will be worth the wait…
Cambodia
During the winter months, the sweltering heat and humidity is significantly softened by cooler temperatures and dry spells, making November-April the perfect time to visit Cambodia – which is currently open to international visitors, dependent on successful visa application, proof of a medical certificate and health insurance. Hidden jungle ruins, pristine beaches accessible by traditional long-tail boats, and a colourful Khmer culture of tangy cuisine and ornate temples await.
Koh Russey Villas & Resort, Bamboo Island…little more than a mile wide, nature is all around on this private island retreat. The hotel’s rooms, suites and villas – some with their own freshwater pools – blend with the backdrop of palm trees and bamboo groves, home to colourful local birds.
The Caribbean
Nowhere does white sandy beaches and impossibly blue waters quite like the Caribbean – and with many of the islands now open to international travellers, it’s still possible to get your dose of vitamin sea this winter. With varying entry requirements for visitors travelling from designated high to low-risk countries (this also differs from state to state if you’re U.S. based), be sure to read up on each island’s tourism board guidelines before booking.
Coral Reef Club, Barbados…Surround yourself with flowering shrubs, swaying palms, colourful bougainvillea, crotons and frangipani at this tropical hideaway on the secluded West Coast. All the rooms have a patio or balcony overlooking the gardens, pool or beach while the Plantation Suites and Luxury Cottage Suites have their own private plunge pool.
The Liming Bequia, Saint Vincent & The Grenadines…Living up to its name as ‘the art of doing nothing’ to Caribbean locals, this private villa resort slows every stay to the relaxed rhythm of Bequia island life, which is refreshingly off the beaten track compared to the larger Caribbean islands.
Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa, St Barthélemy…This exclusive escape is set right beside a peaceful lagoon, where the décor and furnishings are designed to reflect the natural beauty of St Bart’s. Dedicate your days to total relaxation beside the infinity pool or in the individual wooden cabins of the hotel spa, or explore the the bright coral reef that encircles the entire island.
Mexico
Golden, palm-lined beaches meet centuries-old Mayan ruins, colourfully painted buildings, bohemian bars and spiced cuisine – Mexico will take any traveller on a journey of the senses. Home to some of the world’s most beautiful coastline, dotted with pretty palapas and coral reefs, days are best spent swinging in a hammock, or enjoying the sugar-white sands of the East Coast to the jungle-fringed eco-paradises on the West Coast. Head inland for vibrant cities, a medley of handicraft boutiques and markets, and beautifully preserved ancient landmarks which are drawing a more creative crowd.
El Pez, Tulum…With thatched-roof beach houses lining the shore, from a distance this laid-back luxury resort looks like a traditional Mayan village. Best enjoyed barefoot, go for a stroll along the peaceful cove and keep an eye out for newly hatched sea turtles – which sometimes hatch as late as November.
Villas del Mar, San José del Cabo…These elegant casitas take up prime position on Palmilla Beach, with an exclusive beach club to complete the picture of privacy. Room service comes in the form of in-villa meals personally prepared by the resort’s chefs, while the Villas del Mar catamaran is made for languid days of luxury at sea.
Hotel Amparo, San Miguel de Allende…Step inside a historic home which has been refreshed with bold prints and patterns, abstract art and bright Oaxacan textiles. Just down the cobblestone streets from a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hotel Amparo makes the perfect boutique base to explore the city’s thriving arts and crafts scene – it’s easy to see why the hotel was recently recognised by Travel + Leisure as the best city hotel in Mexico, and the second best hotel in the world.
The Maldives
With its far-flung hideaways and private island resorts scattered across the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is proving to be one of the safest destinations to open its borders to international travellers, thanks to its dispersed geography and exclusive transfer services. The privacy of over-water villas and beachfront bungalows guarantees minimal guest interaction, while many dining experiences and activities can be enjoyed in open-air spaces, mask-free (unless you’re snorkelling, of course).
Huvafen Fushi Maldives, North Malé Atoll…Submerge into serenity in the first and only under-the-sea spa on ‘Dream Island’, with treatment rooms overlooking the reef. Also home to the Maldives’ first underground wine cellar, an evening at Vinum takes wine tasting to a whole new level. And this is before you have even dipped your toe in the water-lovers world of Huvafen lagoon.
Baros Maldives, Malé…Elegant, secluded villas with palm thatched roofs are either over-water or facing the beach at this castaway atoll, sheltered by large banana leaves and palms. Diving or snorkelling in the coral reef just off the island is a must with its variety of colourful fish, turtles, rays and an abundance of healthy coral.
Milaidhoo Island Maldives, Baa Atoll…As an adult only resort, Milaidhoo Island is known for its romantic atmosphere and absolute privacy is ensured with all manner of options for in-villa dining, beach dinners and even a night sleeping under the stars – an experience that was recently Highly Commended in the SLH Awards 2020 for Most Intense Bespoke Experience.
Velassaru Maldives, Malé…If you’re looking for a true Maldivian experience, choose one of the water villas at this far-flung island fantasy with a full sea-facing wall that opens out onto an over-water terrace and the lagoon beyond.

The Riviera Maya, Mexico
This sunny Caribbean coastline in Mexico is one of the top vacation spots of the entire country. With its idealistic, white sand beaches, stunning coral reef, vibrant nightlife and laid back beach towns, this is the perfect place to escape to. Whether you’re looking for the relaxing island vibes of Tulum, the expat comforts of Puerto Aventuras, the cosmopolitan nightlife of Playa del Carmen, or the secluded beaches of Xpu-Há, the Riviera Maya has you covered.
Akumal
Called ‘Place of The Turtles’ for a reason, Akumal attracts hundreds of feeding and nesting sea turtles each year. Just meters from the palm tree lined beaches, you will encounter a wonderful underwater world full of rays, tropical fish, coral, and of course, graceful green sea turtles. After a morning of swimming, you must check out the town’s ride and joy, La Buena Vida, for some refreshing cocktails and a delicious meal.
Cozumel
You can reach this beautiful island directly from Playa del Carmen. The ferry takes only 20 minutes, and costs $163 pesos. Cozumel is a wonderful mix of bustling island life, virgin beaches and untouched Mexican jungle. You can spend an afternoon shopping and eating in the town centre, hire a scooter and ride around the entire island, jump into the turquoise waters for a snorkel adventure, or sit back and relax on one of the many beautiful beaches.
Tulum Ruins
Any trip to the Riviera Maya isn’t complete without a visit to the Mayan Ruins in Tulum. Entrance is only $80, and the views are spectacular. Take a step back in time, and learn about the rich history of the Mayan natives. The amazing pyramids, houses, temples and intricate passageways will give you a true glimpse into how life in Mexico used to be.
Avenue
The most famous street in all of the Riviera Maya is 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen. This strip is absolutely littered with bustling shops, restaurants and bars. You can find absolutely anything along this famous street, from designer handbags in the new shopping malls, to delicate, handmade souvenirs in the small local stores. 5th Avenue is an eclectic mix of old and new, modern and traditional, high end and handmade, and has a truly infectious energy.
Cenotes
The Riviera Maya has many natural wonders, some that you can’t see anywhere else in the world. Being on the Yucatan peninsula, this beautiful area is home to many Cenotes. Cenotes are magical bodies of freshwater, scattered throughout the jungle. They are full of unusual fish, stunning rock formations, and are one of the best places to cool off during a hot Mexican afternoon.
Weather
The Riviera Maya experiences hot, tropical weather all year round. There are usually high levels of humidity, and temperatures can reach a sweltering 32°C in the height of summer. The coolest time to visit the Riviera Maya is during the winter months, November through to February. During this time, the temperature during the day is a comfortable 24°C, and at night drops to a refreshing 14°C. There is a very distinct wet season in the Riviera Maya, which runs from late July to September, with a few showers throughout October. During this period you can experience intense tropical storms and heavy rainfall.
Transportation
Getting around the Riviera Maya couldn’t be easier, or cheaper! Most of the actual towns in the Riviera Maya are small enough to walk or bike around, and all of them have countless rental companies for this. However, if you are visiting one of the larger towns, like Playa del Carmen, Akumal or Tulum, you may want to opt for the local bus or taxi services.
Taxis are relatively cheap, and can cost anywhere from $25 pesos for a short trip, to $150 pesos to get from one side of a large town to the other. Buses in the larger towns are frequent, safe and extremely cheap, but not all that comfortable. For $6 pesos a ride, be prepared to get hot, sticky and a little crowded.

Most Romantic Places in the World to Propose
There’s a lot that goes into planning the perfect proposal. Choosing a ring she’ll love is just the first step, but then comes the challenge of picking the best place to get down on one knee. There are dozens of locations around the world that make a beautiful backdrop for a romantic proposal, whether you fancy an exotic island getaway, an overseas excursion, or even an outdoors adventure. With a little time and some careful coordinating, it’s possible to pull off the proposal she’s always dreamed of. For a little inspiration, check out our list of the most romantic places in the world to propose.
1. Paris, France
Paris is believed to be one of the most romantic cities in the world, so it’s no wonder it’s a popular destination for proposals. The city offers plenty of sights, so you have some options when choosing the ideal spot to pop the question. An evening proposal before the Eiffel Tower is sure to leave her starry-eyed, while a rooftop rendezvous will take her breath away with panoramic views of Paris.
2. Central Park—New York City, New York
How many of your favorite romantic films are set in New York City? Few places in the world offer so many sights, so it’s no surprise that it’s become a hot spot for memorable marriage proposals. One of the most popular proposal locations is Central Park, with its lush landscape, and picturesque scenery. The park offers several secluded spots to surprise your loved one, including the serene Shakespeare Garden and the famous Bow Bridge.
3. Cliffs of Moher—Ireland
If it’s a breathtaking view you seek, nothing quite compares to the Cliffs of Moher in southeast Ireland. These astonishing coastal cliffs stretch nearly five miles long, covered in a blanket of rich green grass. And, if you’re visiting in spring or summer, you can expect to see beautiful wild flowers blooming along the cliff side. To avoid having to share your special moment with company, we recommend planning an early morning proposal.
4. Venice—Italy
With its winding canals, hidden bridges, and cobble stoned streets, Venice has long been considered a place of love. Enjoy a relaxing gondola ride with your sweetheart, indulge in a romantic dinner for two, and propose with a picture-perfect backdrop of the Rialto Bridge or the Piazza San Marco. You’re both sure to remember the moment for years to come.
5. Tower Bridge—London, UK
The Tower Bridge of London is one of the city’s many historic landmarks, famous for its sweeping views of the metropolis. The bridge’s high level walkways were closed for decades, but eventually reopened to the public in 1982. These walkways feature glass floors through which visitors can enjoy views of the River Thames. The space can be reserved for private events, meaning you and your loved one can share an intimate proposal, just the two of you, or strictly with family and friends.
6. Lake Louise—Canada
Do you and your darling share a thirst for adventure? Lake Louise offers a stunning setting for an unforgettable marriage proposal, with magnificent snow-capped mountains and crystal clear, turquoise water. There are several great spots to get a close up of the lake and surrounding forest, making it the ideal place to capture some extraordinary photos. While you’re visiting, explore one of Lake Louise’s many hiking trails, dine on some killer cuisine, and enjoy a range of outdoor activities.
7. Disney World—Orlando, Florida
Just like the fairy-tales we grew up with, every young girl dreams of finding her prince charming. Why not fulfill her childhood fantasy with a passionate proposal at the most magical place on earth? Disney World is one of the hottest spots to get engaged, and with so much to see and do, it’s easy to see why. Can’t decide where in the park to pop the question? Cinderella’s castle is an ever popular choice, though it’s far from your only option. You can surprise her while riding her favorite attraction, during the park’s spectacular fireworks show, or at one of the resort’s several romantic restaurants.
8. Santorini—Greece
Of all the Greek islands, Santorini is considered to be the most romantic, with its sparkling blue seas, and swoon worthy sunsets. A beautiful city set on the cliff side, Santorini boasts panoramic views of the Aegean Sea, world class wine tasting, and plenty of ancient architecture to appeal to your inner historian. Celebrate your love with an oceanfront proposal, followed by a toast of her favorite wine, and an evening stroll through the stone streets of one of Santorini’s quaint villages.
9. Mayan Ruins—Tulum, Mexico
If your bride-to-be enjoys exploring centuries-old civilizations, there’s no better place to propose than the ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum, Mexico. Perfectly positioned near the seaside and surrounded by dense jungle, Tulum is the best balance of adventure and tranquility. After she says “yes”, the two of you can take advantage of all that Tulum has to offer. Take a peek around the wondrous Mayan temple overlooking the sparkling waters of the Caribbean Sea, enjoy an exciting ATV tour, or learn how to prepare some tasty, authentic cuisine with a private cooking class.
10. Neuschwanstein Castle—Bavaria, Germany
Neuschwanstein Castle looks like something straight from the pages of a fairytale, with its magnificent towers, beautiful balconies, and splendid statues. In fact, this architectural wonder is believed to have inspired Disney’s famed Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. Located along Germany’s “Romantic Road,” Neuschwanstein Castle offers guests guided tours of the palace, as well as a number of nearby hiking trails to take in the view from every angle. To get the best snapshot of the castle in the background, plan to pop the question at Marienbrücke bridge, just a short walk away.
11. Northern Lights—Iceland
For a truly memorable occasion that she’ll never forget, nothing beats a proposal beneath the Northern Lights in Iceland. While this does require a bit of planning, it will be a once in a lifetime experience for the both of you. The best time for viewing is between April and September, given the weather is clear, so the longer you visit, the more chance you’ll have of catching a glimpse of this fleeting phenomenon. If you plan things just right, your sweetheart is sure to be taken by surprise!
12. Sydney Opera House—Sydney, Australia
Sydney Opera House is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the entire world, which explains why it’s a go-to destination for proposals. Sydney offers the best of laid-back beach life balanced by the excitement of a bustling city. Plus, there are a few great options for the ideal proposal spot. For a truly unique experience, consider proposing bay side on a boat. You’ll be able to enjoy prime views of the Opera House, while taking in the beauty of the bay.
