Duck Butter

2017 review for the Tumblr.com page “Open Mic Night” By Dalton Wade “Duck Butter” is an American Hard-Punk band originating in Oak Ridge/Knoxville, Tennessee that was formed in the year prior by their drummer Owen Bradly Mull with the colorful stage name, “Alexander Cactushead”.  At the time, Mull was working with the soon to be guitarist and vocalist for “Duck Butter” Connor Liam Donell or “Louie Stinkfist” on an original project before bringing in a shining new comer, who Mull had also worked with, bassist/vocalist Seanpatrick Griffin McCaffrey aka “Griff Knivez” and forming Duck Butter in mid to late 2016. Not much is known of this new band besides what was given by their Social Media bio as the self-proclaimed “Weirdest band in Tennessee” and a few eye-opening chats with some of Duck Butters’ fans; one such chat had a very positive message for those who were interested in Hard-Punk music, “It doesn’t matter where you come from or how you live your life Punk Music is open to any who care to listen.” My critique of Duck Butter is as most know quite optimistic and unexpected. I usually don’t listen to anything other than calming music like Indie camp songs but with the exception of Duck Butter I am not only excited to hear them in person, I’m also eager for them to drop merchandise simply for me to get on the ground floor. The band was inspired by a number of famous bands all the way from “The Germs” to “The Beatles”, from “Nirvana” to “Bad Religion” and I think that’s what makes this band an immediate wonder. For a band to be as care free and smooth as “The Beatles” to being as grungy and coarse as bands like “Bad Religion” is just plain astounding. While I have not personally listened to their music live I have had their music described colorfully by one of my friends who attended one of Duck Butters late night performances. He (my friend) described Duck Butter as having a unique and indecisive sound, one that could be considered unorganized and cluttered but raw and powerful, “Just as punk should be.” The music is wild and reckless and makes me, a mild mannered person, want to shatter something and yell, that’s how good this music is, that’s what people want to hear. Since Duck Butter is rather new and unknown it should be given the underground stamp of approval. Having the image of a Garage Band would work wonders for Duck Butter because what attracts a crowd more than loud music and the words, “I know a guy,” or “They’re so in the know about unheard of music.” In terms of how the band members feel about the band itself I’ve talked with bassist/vocalist “Griff Knivez” with hopes of getting some answers. When asked about his hopes for the band he had much to say; without hesitation, he described Duck Butter as his legacy and that it will succeed because of its’ message to the people, Griff has hopes that the band may act as a unified voice for an angry populous during the political chaos in the world. A message I can get behind. Griff also claimed that he and his fellow band mates have something big planned and it’s going to be as fun as it will be chaotic and I am ready for it.
